Book Title: Funding Your Start-up: And Other Nightmares
Author: Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra
Format: Kindle

My Thoughts
In recent years the word 'start-up' has been making rounds. Start-up businesses have been receiving increased attention in many parts of the world. In our country, India, the number of start-ups has snowballed, and more support has become available for them. The Indian start-up system and model has been successful in most of the cases since 2010.

If we talk about the genesis of start-up culture in India, we shall initially look at the roots of this initiative. Start-ups have played and continue to play significant roles in the growth, development and industrialization of many economics all over the world. India has declared 2010-20 as the Decade of Innovation. The Government has stressed the need to vocalize a policy to synergies science, technology & innovation and has also established the National Innovation Council(NIC).

Here, in the book, the authors Dhruv Nath who is a professor at the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, is also an active angel investor and a director with Lead Angels. He has invested in over ten start-ups and has mentored several others. Also, if we talk about the other author Sushanto Mitra, he has been associated with the early-stage start-up ecosystem in India for more than fifteen years, with prior experience in consulting and financial services. He founded Lead Angels with a team of three, all from IIT Bombay. Today Mitra has taken the network to more than 130 members and a full-time group of twelve people. The company is now a full-stack financial services provider for start-ups, covering advisory and professional services.

When a youngster thinks of setting up a start-up company, all certain time, he or she expects a support system. The authors Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra provide such support system that which the young entrepreneurs rely upon. In this book of that has 21 chapters divided into categories explain in detail the whole world of a start-up business in India. The focus is mostly on how to get funds, what innovative approaches that a company must take to taste success, not accept the defeat easily if the initial days run through a rough road etc. kind of wisdom words.

A practical illustration of companies is mentioned in the book. The age-old traditions of having an ample office space in a giant building, or the lines of business that is not considered on the front-line ( sanitary pads, recycled materials etc.) are scraped off very diligently in the chapters. Though not in a direct manner, anyone having such taboos or doubts can easily shrug off these rules and hence start their business. A business will also taste failures. When such situations arise, the most important concern is about the funds. In the book, both the authors have also pragmatically explained the steps to cope up and hence march towards the brighter side.

This book contains a list of handpicked real-life stories that teach a lot. I find this a highly superior way of delivering a message or imparting wisdom. I recommend the book very strongly.

Who can read
The book is an excellent read for anyone who wants to start or already in the start-up. The authors have illustrated and presented the readers with a realistic model of running a successful business. Other than the examples explained, many other things can be learnt from the book. The importance of cash flow, the secrets for tremendous success and many other things are presented in an understandable language.

How good is the Authors' writing style
The authors Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra in this book have addressed some of the essential and crucial concerns. In the elementary and simple language, both the authors have done an excellent job in explaining the real stories of both successful and unsuccessful start-up companies.

An example from a particular industry, its genesis, its story, aftermath results and such are very well explained. The book can be considered as a ready reference or a hand-book of how not to run a start-up. As the authors say, stories of failures are more great lessons than the successful one, here in this book, such content is found.

How entertaining is the book
A book's success also depends not only on the content that it has but the narrative and the tone of the content. If the content, especially in the non-fiction books is sombre and complex, the readers will be bored and exhausted. But, if the tone in which the book is written is dynamic, humorous and realistic, the readers will relate it on a personal level and identify themselves in the book. Yes, this is possible even in the non-fiction genre books that have contents which are useful for the readers.

This book, as the title suggests, is all about the world of Start-Up companies, the do's and don'ts, the pros and cons, the successes and failures. The cases, stories and many such things explained in the book not only educate the readers and entrepreneurs but also entertain.

Final Verdict
Hands-on book for making a plan to set a start-up!

Navigating the post-COVID-19 funding landscape for start-ups can be daunting, but this book offers a beacon of hope. It immerses readers in the journeys of early-stage start-ups, detailing how they successfully raised funds and, crucially, why others failed. These stories provide invaluable lessons from both successes and setbacks. The authors’ interviews with industry giants like Deep Kalra of MakeMyTrip, Yashish Dahiya of PolicyBazaar, Dinesh Agarwal of IndiaMART, and Sairee Chahal of SHEROES are particularly enlightening. The book culminates in a ‘PERSISTENT’ framework that distills these insights into actionable steps, making it an indispensable resource for any start-up aiming to become investment-ready.

This book makes complicated financial ideas understandable to both new and experienced business owners by making them clear and entertaining. The main focus is on how to raise money, what creative steps a business must take to achieve success, how to not take defeat lightly if the first few years are difficult, etc. You can still follow along if you’re fresh to the startup environment since the writers explain everything in plain English. This book has valuable information for all types of entrepreneurs, from seasoned pros to those just beginning out.

The book’s true value lies in its ability to simplify complex financial concepts so that even novice and expert business owners may grasp them. The book is jam-packed with true tales of enterprises that raised capital and failed miserably. For me, this was the most beneficial section as mistakes can teach you just as much as achievements can. This book is an excellent resource for prospective business owners as it provides a road map for navigating the modern business environment.

Can just an idea change my life? No, not in the startup world. Even the best intentions may not lead to fruition. Why? Lack of solid entry barriers or lesser scalability or people unwilling to pay money for a product. This book provides the checklist that needs to be ticked before angel investors would want to part with their beloved money.
Some of my preconceived notions about the people holding crores of money before they turn angel investors or the startups being always profitable have changed. A person having as low as 5 lakhs can choose to be an angel investor. Also, even though the ultimate goal of the startup is to generate unit economics positive in earnings, losses may be inevitable initially before the significant chunk of the market is captured.
Ultimately, the question of whether funding is even the requisite for a startup is touched upon. The answer is no. Funding can lead to growth. Therefore potential growth should be judged irrespective of whether or not it is achieved through funding.
Uncertainty, money, huge successes are exciting. Only brave and unconventional could choose risky directions. As a 24-year-old still holding dreams of the probable future utopian world and having read enough startup stories, I now want to think about the very idea aligning with the checklist, of course, that should change my life.

I found this book really useful. I learned something from each chapter. It is more than just a guide, it is a brutally honest companion for every founder venturing into the uncertain world of startups. With real stories from both successful and failed ventures, it clearly explains what it really takes to raise funds. The Persistent Framework is a practical toolkit, not just for impressing investors, but also for checking if your startup is really ready.

Most importantly, this book emphasizes how you are raising funds, not just why you are raising funds. It emphasizes that choosing the right investor is as important as getting funding. It is not about the hype, it is about building something that is sustainable.

From pitch decks to term sheets, from silent failures to surprising wins, this book gives lessons that you will remember.

When we read about problems faced by entrepreneurs, we come across a common issue - funding. If you have already established yourself and have earned a few badges like brand, image, competence, and so on, it is quite easy to find better financial advisors. But what about newbies? In fact, raising funds is a critical issue for fresh startups as they are new entrants and in the introduction phase of PLC.

So this book can serve as a good guidebook for those who are looking for financial advice on where to raise funds, how to approach, when to invest, how much to invest, etc.

There is a good amount of managerial knowledge given in this book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Venture capital, angel investors, meetings with successful entrepreneurs like Deep Kalra (Founder and executive chairman of MakemyTrip), and many more are the extra added flavor in this book.

The idea of a no-money wedding gift is definitely an interesting part to read. I really enjoyed this read and did not find any flaws in it. Good one.

I don't usually read business books, but Funding Your Startup really caught my attention. As someone who's not familiar with the startup world, I found it to be super helpful and educating. The authors share real-life stories of startups that succeeded and failed, which made the book relatable and easy to understand. What I loved most was the interviews with successful founders like Deep Kalra from MakeMyTrip and Yashish Dahiya from PolicyBazaar. Their experiences and advice were really valuable, and the framework they created is a great tool for anyone looking to get funding for their startup. I was impressed by how practical and actionable the book was. The authors didn't just talk theory, they shared real-world examples and tips that you can apply to your own business. I learned a lot from this book, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to start or grow a business.

Imagine you’re in the thick of launching your startup, filled with excitement and trepidation. You’ve got a killer idea but no clue how to get the funding you need. Enter "Funding Your Startup: And Other Nightmares" by Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra, a book that feels like a lifeline thrown to a drowning entrepreneur. These authors aren't just talking theory; they’ve been in the trenches and come out the other side with wisdom to share.

This book dives into the wild world of startup funding, especially relevant in our post-COVID era where every dollar feels like it’s hidden in a dragon-guarded cave. Nath and Mitra use real stories of startups to paint a vivid picture of the funding landscape. Some tales are of glorious success, while others are hard-hitting lessons in what not to do. What makes this book stand out is its balanced approach: it's as much about the failures as it is about the triumphs. Plus, the 'PERSISTENT' framework they introduce is pure gold for anyone looking to get their startup investment-ready.

Nath and Mitra have a knack for breaking down complex concepts into digestible bites. Their writing is clear, engaging, and often laced with humor. It’s like getting directions from a friend who knows all the shortcuts, rather than following a complicated GPS. They know how to keep you hooked from start to finish, making the whole process of learning about funding feel almost... fun.

The book doesn’t have characters per se, but it’s rich with the stories of real startups. These stories are so detailed and well-told that you can practically feel the founders' stress and exhilaration. For example, the tale of Cashify, which thrived despite being snubbed by banks, is both inspiring and practical. It shows that with the right strategy, you can make it even without initial investor support.

Structured to guide you step-by-step, this book takes you from the early days of attracting investors to sealing the deal. The pacing is just right – no dragging, no rushing. Each chapter builds logically on the last, so by the end, you’ve got a solid grasp of what it takes to secure funding. It’s a well-organized journey that keeps you engaged and informed.

Resilience and adaptability are at the heart of this book. The 'PERSISTENT' framework is a testament to that mindset, showing that persistence pays off. The authors also stress the importance of honesty and transparency, warning against trying to deceive investors. It’s a refreshing reminder that integrity still has a place in the business world.

This book is a roller-coaster ride of emotions. You’ll feel the frustration of startups struggling to get funding, the relief when they finally succeed, and the inspiration to keep pushing forward. One of the most memorable stories is about how Cashify succeeded by focusing on profitability instead of relying on external funding. It's a testament to the power of perseverance.

The biggest strength of this book is its practicality. Nath and Mitra’s advice is actionable and grounded in real-world experience. The interviews with successful entrepreneurs like Deep Kalra and Yashish Dahiya add another layer of credibility and insight. The 'PERSISTENT' framework is a standout, providing a clear roadmap for startups.

While the book is fantastic, it could use more examples from outside India to appeal to a global audience. Some deeper dives into alternative funding options beyond venture capital would also be beneficial. These are minor quibbles in an otherwise excellent book.

I genuinely enjoyed this book. It’s not just informative; it’s inspirational. As someone interested in startups, I found the blend of practical advice and real-life stories incredibly motivating. The emphasis on mindset and persistence resonated deeply with me. This book isn’t just about getting funding; it’s about building a resilient, adaptable business.

"Funding Your Startup: And Other Nightmares" is a must-read for any entrepreneur. Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra offer a treasure trove of insights and practical tips, all delivered in an engaging, relatable style. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your funding strategy, this book provides the guidance you need to navigate the startup funding maze. It’s a book that I’ll be recommending to every aspiring entrepreneur I meet.

Getting finance can seem like an absolute nightmare in the turbulent world of startups. This book is a ray of hope for business owners trudging through this difficult terrain. This book is more than simply a manual; it's an anthology of true tales that combine triumphs and setbacks to provide priceless lessons.

🥀The practical strategy taken by this book is one of its most appealing features. Nath doesn't sugarcoat the challenges of raising money, particularly in the post-COVID-19 environment when cash is even more in short supply. He carefully dissects the fundraising procedure and provides entrepreneurs with an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide. For both seasoned and inexperienced entrepreneurs, this book is a must-read because each chapter is written with an in-depth knowledge of the startup ecosystem.

🥀The author's thesis derives strength from his utilization of real-world situations. By sharing the experiences of early-stage companies that overcame all obstacles to get capital, he gives readers not just hope but also a concrete road map for success. The accounts of failures—startups that were unable to secure the capital they required and the factors that contributed to their difficulties—are just as significant. These instructive stories highlight the value of learning from the mistakes of others and are a treasure trove of wisdom.

🥀The conversations with several of the most successful entrepreneurs in the corporate world are what really make this book unique. Prominent figures such as Sairee Chahal of SHEROES, Dinesh Agarwal from IndiaMART, Yashish Dahiya from PolicyBazaar, and Deep Kalra from MakeMyTrip give their perspectives and experiences.

🥀Not only are these interviews motivational, but they also include a wealth of useful guidance that may be implemented right away in any entrepreneurial endeavor.
One other noteworthy aspect is the author's inventive 'PERSISTENT' foundation. With a focus on important areas including Product, Earnings, Risk, The ability to scale, Team, Industry, the Network, and Technology, & Social Impact, this framework aims to prepare companies for funding. This framework's constituent parts are all covered in great detail, offering entrepreneurs a thorough plan for luring investors.

🥀The organization of the book is also excellent. It is laid out with ease of navigation in mind, with each chapter elaborating upon the one before it. The writing is interesting and approachable, and difficult ideas are presented in a way that is simple to comprehend. Because of the author's skill in storytelling, the book is both interesting to read and highly educational.

🥀Furthermore, the author's openness in talking about his mistakes is encouraging. This book serves as a helpful reminder that failure is an essential component of the entrepreneurial path in a society that frequently exalts success. Through outlining the mistakes made by specific firms, the author offers a fair analysis that is realistic and uplifting. There's more to this book than just a guide to raising money. It functions as a guide in book form, helping business owners navigate the good and bad times of their initial venture. This book is a goldmine of information and inspiration, regardless of where you are in your business or how to grow it.

🥀The author has created a work of art that will undoubtedly become a staple for new businesses. His perceptive analysis, together with actual experiences and professional interviews, elevate this book to the status of a necessary resource for any entrepreneur. As someone who's always tinkered with business ideas, this book was a goldmine of practical advice. Forget the flashy stories of billion-dollar startups; this book dives into the nitty-gritty of getting your idea off the ground, even with limited resources. Here's what I learned that can be applied to any business, big or small. Firstly, the book emphasizes the importance of understanding your audience. It doesn't matter if you're selling handmade crafts online or opening a local bakery; knowing who your ideal customer is key. It reminded me that sometimes success lies in being scrappy and identifying a niche that bigger players might overlook. Secondly, the book debunks the myth that every startup needs funding. While stories of venture capitalists and Series A rounds can be glamorous, they're not the only path to success. The book highlights the value of bootstrapping, which basically means growing your business with your own resources and profits. This resonated with me because funding can come with strings attached. This book offers tips on making your business profitable from the start, a crucial skill for any entrepreneur, regardless of funding goals.Thirdly, the book highlights the power of perseverance. It features interviews with accomplished founders, but it doesn't shy away from the challenges they faced. Reading about their struggles made me realize that setbacks are inevitable. What matters is the determination to keep going and adapt your approach when needed. Finally, the book showcases the value of learning from both successes and failures. It features stories of startups that failed to raise funding, something rarely discussed. These cautionary tales highlight the importance of having a solid business model and a clear understanding of your market. By learning from the mistakes of others, I can hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls myself. This is a must-read for anyone with an entrepreneurial itch. It provides practical advice, inspirational stories, and a healthy dose of reality. Whether you're launching a tech startup or a local bookstore, the lessons in this book can equip you with the tools and mindset to navigate the exciting, and sometimes messy, world of business ownership.

The word 'start-up' has been making rounds since the early 2000s. Start-up businesses are seen as a beckon of a strong economy. In our country, India, the number of start-ups has paved way for a dynamic economy.

The Indian start-up system and model has been successful in most of the cases because of sincere investments.

The author elaborates when you create a start-up, you obviously need money. The process highlights hiring people, for marketing your product or service, for developing and hosting a website, for operations such as managing inventory and deliveries, for the call centre that will handle calls to and from customers, and for just about anything else that are business necessary things.

The genesis of start-up culture in India has a deep involvement of like minded people.

Risks in a start-up are clearly high. It’s an unproven company, and it may or may not survive. And when an investor buys shares in the company, he cannot sell them in the stock market simply because they are not listed.

Overall start-ups have played and continue to play significant roles in the growth, development and industrialization of many economics all over the world. The book focuses on India which declared 2010-20 as the Decade of Innovation. The Government has stressed the need to create a policy to synergies science, technology & innovation and has also established the National Innovation Council(NIC).

The authors Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra provide support system on which the young entrepreneurs can rely. In this book the 21 chapters are divided into categories to explain in detail the whole world of a start-up business in India. The focus is mostly on how to get funds, what innovative approaches a company must take to get success, not accept the defeat easily if the initial days run through a rough road etc. kind of wisdom words. The book is exciting and recommended to all business oriented people.

Book Review : Funding Your Start-up: And Other Nightmares
---
If you're an aspiring entrepreneur, buried under pitch decks, or an investor looking for a fresh perspective, Funding Your Start-up: And Other Nightmares by Dhruv Nath & Sushanto Mitra is highly recommended. This is not a typical business book; it provides an honest look at the Indian startup world post-COVID.
---
So, what makes this a must-read?
It's full of "been there, done that" stories. Instead of theoretical advice, you get real journeys of founders, including the failures..
The "PERSISTENT" framework is a game-changer. This 10-step checklist is a practical guide that could transform your approach to making a startup investment-ready.
It completely flips the script on what investors are really looking for. Forget the "big idea" hype. The book focuses on unit economics, traction, and the grit needed to succeed.
It celebrates bootstrappers. It challenges the idea that venture capital is the only road to success.
---
Any downsides?
If being critical, the inclusion of a few more global examples to broaden the scope would be beneficial. Also, a deeper dive into alternative funding methods like crowdfunding would be useful.
What stuck with me
"Investors bet on jockeys, not horses." This emphasizes the importance of building a fantastic team.
Learn from what didn't work. The failure stories are just as valuable as the triumphs.
Funding is a tool for growth, not the ultimate prize. The book reminds you to keep your eyes on the real goal.
---
My final thoughts
This book is a 4.5/5 ⭐
Funding Your Start-up: And Other Nightmares provides practical wisdom. It's a must-read for anyone starting a business, angel investors, or even business students who want a dose of reality about emerging markets.
This book is about building a business that can adapt, survive, and thrive.

I read this book recently and found it to be a helpful guide for startup founders looking to raise funding. The book shares real stories of early-stage startups that were successful in raising funds, as well as those that failed. By learning from both successes and failures, it provides valuable insights.

What I really liked is that the authors interviewed accomplished founders like Deep Kalra of MakeMyTrip, Yashish Dahiya of PolicyBazaar, Dinesh Agarwal of IndiaMART and Sairee Chahal of SHEROES. Their experiences are condensed into a useful "PERSISTENT" framework that covers key aspects like problem, earnings model, risks, market size, innovation, scalability, team, entry barriers and niche. This framework helps make a startup investment-ready.

The book explains this PERSISTENT model through multiple startup examples in simple terms that were easy for me to understand. It shows how successful startups tend to follow this model, while failures usually miss out on one or more of the parameters. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I found this framework very handy to evaluate the potential of my own startup idea.

The authors also discuss the impact of events like COVID-19 that make funding scarce. They rightly advise that in such tough times, following the PERSISTENT approach becomes even more crucial to attract investors who become highly selective.

Overall, by combining startup stories, insights from founders, and the PERSISTENT framework, this book equipped me with a good understanding of what it takes to successfully raise funds as a new venture. The simple language made it an easy and engaging read. I would definitely recommend it to aspiring entrepreneurs and startup founders.

Prof. Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra's Funding your startup and other nightmares, is a well-compiled, deeply researched book on the topic of funding for startups. Written in a easy to understand, humorous, and practical manner, the book is a must-have for anyone getting into the startup space in India. Not only do the authors explain in depth, the topic of funding, including the theoretical concept behind the often-used terms within startup funding like term sheets, shareholder agreements, and the many nuances within these legal instruments, but also provide us, the reader and possibly interested entrepreneur a framework to navigate the funding space

The PERSISTENT framework is an acronym for 10 of the critical attributes that investors, angel and VCs alike, look for in any stage of a startup, before the funding is approved. The framework is similar to a strategic business canvas that we use as part of project management in large corporations, however the focus is on identifying the status of "lifesaving" indicators for the startup. The book also contains words of wisdom from the successful entrepreneurs and founders of the Indian startup ecosystem like MakeMyTrip's Deep Kalra, PolicyBazaar's Yashish Dahiya, IndiaMART's Dinesh Agarwal to name a few

In conclusion, this is one of the must-re-reads for any entrepreneur or enthusiast of the Indian startup system - both from a founder and a investor perspective. The dissection of more than 10 startups using the PERSISTENT framework is a remarkable insight provider into what makes or breaks the funding cycle for a startup, similar to oxygen for our sustenance!

After deciding to trudge on the entrepreneurial route , the next issue which most new age founders face is with the funding. For any venture to flourish it is imperative to have financial backing but how to get it is a major question. Though the current Central Government under the able leadership of Modi ji has made it very easy to avail decent funds if someone really needs it , still if someone wants to escalate it further getting the visibility from MNCs is a no match and this book precisely teaches you that.

The author is really adept in building stories around startups and everything related to it. Having read his previous work , I was always looking forward to start with this one . The way he has demystified the myths surrounding funding and simplified the complex financial concepts is a treat to experience. I often use to stay away from such books in the fear that the information might be too overwhelming and daunting for me and might have an ill effect on my psyche but this book instead through its storylike manner felt strangely relieving

The actual interviews with the successful ventures are an icing on the cake which only bolsters one's belief and raise the reliability factor . Also it seems like a fast paced movie in which some of the characters (read startup founders) are finally getting their much awaited funding while some that are unable to , their reasons are also told so that readers can take cue and don't repeat the same blunder. The narrative is quite compelling and dynamic instead of being mundane .

All in all , an excellent book for anyone who is looking forward to start something of his own

Funding Your Startup

This book Is written with the Indian Context giving case studies of Indian Ventures, Some that succeeded and some that (not failed) but did not cross the line. The reasons are explained well by the author using a Framework which he calls PERSISTENT Framework

P-Problem to be solved
E- Earnings Model or Monetization channels and strategy
R- Risks Involved
S- Size of Market
I- Innovation
S- Scalability
T- Team
E-Entry Barrier
N- Niche
T- Traction

These concepts are covered in detail in a Book Named 7 Powers by Author Hamilton Helmer and I would strongly recommend anybody reading this review to read that book before such case studies and make your fundamentals strong. Another Book I recommend in the area of competitive intelligence is "Competitive Strategy" by Michal Porter.

This book does a good job in setting up context for the Indian Geography. Its quick to read, not heavy.

Most of the case studies are typical market place products that try to connect buyers and suppliers and thus volume of transactions becomes your North Star Metric. Thus is you want to understand Market Place Product Based Companies, this is definitely a good read. The Other Ctegories of Product Based Companies if you want to know apart from Market Place Products are SaaS, Freemium(Games), User Generated Content With Ads(Social Media), and Ecommerce(Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto etc)

This book can be read by Potential Wannebe Entrepreneurs, Product Managers in Tech Based Companies.

It's a series of non-fiction reads for me... Since June started I have been receiving books which either are about spiritual growth or mental growth. Out of such book one of them was - 'Funding your startup and other nightmares' by Dhruv Nath and Sushanto Mitra.

You can assume this book will be similar to how businesses run, how funding needs to be done, what care must be taken and so on which I there.. But it also talks about limitations. Each business comes with a certain scope. Many books talk about the glamour of the world/industry but this book shows the reality. In laymen's words, this book is not just about how you can raise 10 million in a day but a practical guide on how it can be achieved and when it should be achieved.

Funding is a vital part of the business. And because of this entrepreneur boom in India at first people think raising funds is just a one time thing. But this book shoes how its not. This book shows how funding must be planned and achieved. It also discusses how a business should be started - correct attitude, intent and perspective.

I loved how beautifully the author has kept things simple and to the point. Things aren't stretched unnecessarily, pace is kept well, the language and terms used are simple and where its not the author D had made sure to explain why it means.

The highlighting factor for me was the way in which not only the successes of various startups were mentioned but also the failures and reasons for the same.

Overall, a hands-on guide if someone wants to understand how to raise funds in depth.

"Funding Your Startup and Other Nightmares" by Dhruv Nath is one of the best non-fiction business genre books I have read. I always read two to three books every year about start-ups, even though I do not want to be a businesswoman I like to read these books for new ideas and to understand the market and the need or necessity of the business.
I was curious to read this book for two reasons to understand the fundamentals of funding and the challenges people face to gain the funding for their start-ups. As I watch Shark Tank for the same reason but I loved reading this book and I came across many new and old known terms with so much clarity.
In the second chapter of the book, the author described the "Basics of Funding" and I understood the statement - "Angles invest their own money, whereas VCs typically invest other people's money." I have heard these terms in Shark Tank India but I did not exactly have a clear picture but now I have. Apart from this, I loved chapter seven and I did not know that weddings could have given someone insight into a new idea about gifting. It is a must-read chapter.
Overall book has shown some of the known business models and their analysis to make the reader understand the whole business model and how the COVID effect came later on.
If you also like to understand the business and funding of start-ups then this book should be your next read.

Dhruv Nath's book "Funding Your Startups and Other Nightmares" is a refreshingly straightforward and useful manual for anyone curious about the unvarnished process of starting a business, with all of its successes and setbacks.

The book provides an unbiased look at what it really takes to get funding by combining real-life success and failure stories from Indian business owners. It demystifies funding sources, from venture capital to bootstrapping, while highlighting the significance of budgeting, financial planning, and legal readiness.

Two straightforward yet effective frameworks are the book's greatest assets. While the TOP-E (Team, Opportunity, Product, Execution) lens provides a quick yet efficient way to understand what investors truly look for, the PERSISTENT framework assists startups in evaluating their funding readiness across critical areas.

This book's approachable writing style, which is never overly technical but is packed with incredibly insightful information, is what makes it so captivating. Even more potent than success stories are the lessons learned from failures, which provide early-stage founders with much-needed reality checks.

This is a must-read if you're interested in starting your own business or are simply enthralled with the chaotic magic of startups. It is strategic, perceptive, and, above all, genuine.

I give this book a solid 4 out of 5 for all the above reasons.
