The tv show is better. I wanted to read rhus thing so bad and yeah I loved some situations and characters that don't appear in the show but..is kinda dissappointing and also seems to be writted by some edgy teenager

This graphic novel series began publication in 2006. It is the basis for the Amazon Video series also titled The Boys.

The story takes place on a version of Earth that is very like our own, except for the presence of superpowered metahumans - hundreds, if not thousands of them. Although they are ostensibly superheroes, many of the metahumans are anything but heroic. That's where The Boys come in.

The Boys are a small CIA strike team charged with monitoring metahuman activity and taking action against those who step out of line. Ennis is the same author who wrote The Preacher graphic novel, the basis for the AMC series of the same name. This series is heavy on sex, nudity, and violence so I wouldn't recommend it for young readers.

I gave The Boys Omnibus Volume 1 4 stars on Goodreads. The premise is good and the story is interesting, the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the over the top adult nature of the material.

honestly... this is some absolutely dated, and edge lord level cringe writing... I didn't expect this. I am equally aghast at the idea of a large white male using the N-word when speaking to another white male, so casually, that I'm left in simple "wtf did I just read?" level bewilderment... and at the same time... edge lord. Very thankful the tv adaptation has better sense. watch the show, leave the comics to their dust collecting.

3 stars, because 2.5 isn't an option, and it's not a terrible story, just terribly edgy with great artwork.

jumped into this expecting the worse of the worse--- considering people claim this is awful compared to its counterparts, i didnt think it would be anything worth spending my time on. i do admit, the show and the way they wrote and fleshed out all the plots and characters is 100% better than this 1st omnibus. seriously, everything in the show is inherently better. however, i do think some of the criticism the comics receive isn't deserved. after reading this first part, i genuinely believe it really wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. of course, there's 5 other parts i need to finish, so this opinion is subject to change.

edgy for the sake of being edgy?

it's Garth Ennis, everything this guy writes is some form of edgy. i'm not sure why this is a huge talking point when it comes to this series. i wholeheartedly believe that the edge, the gore, and the isms are necessary for telling this specific story, especially considering what ennis was trying to critique in the first place. do i believe the comics are edgy for the sake of being edgy? no. however, the use of EDGE and the degree of which its used is completely overdone. some scenes weren't needed to be fleshed out the way the were, and didn't drive or further advance the plot. the amount of bestiality, depiction of starlights rape (and subsequent reaction), etc, were not needed in order to showcase the terrible nature of supes, and the harm they cause to society. it feels like its being spoonfed to me, yelling at me; "hey! look how horrible and depraved the supes can be." --- and its like, yes, i CAN see and i CAN imply things without having to outright read it. this is obviously a product of bad writing, which is why alot of people make the argument about the boys being edgy for the sake of edge. but that brings me to my 2nd point, the time period of which this comic run was written. now, this is not an excuse for what is depicted or said in the comics, however, i do think it serves relevancy. the amount of blatant homophobia and racism apparent in the comics ARE a product of the early 2000s. i feel like alot of people don't understand that THAT was the humor of the time, and that was what was considered dark satirical funny use of jokes. obviously, reading this 20, nearly 30 years down the line, the average person would consider this weird; not funny at all. which is why in the show, we see a different version of satirical dark humor. the use of edge and gore, racism and homophobia is still seen, however its application and the way its written into the show is what makes it so much better in terms of it being filmed and created in the 2020s. if the show were created in the 2000s, right along side the comics, the humor and displaying of edge would be VASTLY different. therefore, comparing what was funny then to what is funny now shouldnt be relevant when it comes to the conversation of edge.

in terms of writing, the show does it 100% better. compound V being a top secret government drug that produces superpowers as a side effect, versus a random street drug that temporarily gives you super strength and higher endurance is better in terms of writing. the whole aspect of regular humans defeating overpowered supes is better, and serves as a greater satisfaction everytime the boys actually get a win at something. this aspect is defeated when you turn yourself into the very thing you hate. if you hate supes, why shoot yourself up with the drug thats guaranteed to turn yourself into one? this very question is beautifully executed in the show, but is waved off in the comics. i could go on and on about how the show is better, but than we'd be here forever.

all in all, while the comics do happen to be mediocre, with hypocritical plots and questionable humor, i dont think it should be subject to the amount of hate it gets. after all, without the comics, we wouldnt have the show. of course, i still have the rest of the series to finish, so we'll see if my opinion changes by then.

The Boys comics are delightfully gritty and gory. Almost all the characters are just awful in the best ways possible. Like all things, they’re definitely not perfect and some character decisions just don’t make sense, but it still makes for a good story. Recommend reading if you’ve enjoyed the tv series.

I love the show The Boys on Amazon so decided to give the comic a try. It's great. The plot differs from the show in many ways, but at lot of similarities, too. If you're a fan of the show, you'll like this too.
