In Ray Bradbury's thrilling "The Veldt," the futuristic nursery setting crackles with suspense as David McClean encounters two children in the midst of a picnic. The tranquility of the glade is shattered as lions engage in a fierce display, and a sense of impending danger hangs in the air. The vivid description of the vultures descending from the blazing sky adds a pulse-quickening element to the narrative. Against this backdrop, Wendy's seemingly casual offer of a cup of tea injects a surreal excitement, intensifying the story's exploration of the dark consequences of unbridled technological innovation.

Kids just want to have fun

“The Veldt”; is a separate publication of this story which was collected earlier in “THE ILLUSTRATED MAN.” Please do not read this story if there are cats present.

Now that virtual reality is perfected Parents can have the room be the nanny. The kids have many environments to choose from; their favorite seems to be the veldt where the virtual lions seem to be munching on something DEAD.

Unfortunately, there may be an unhealthy side effect. The parents check out the room, see the lions, and hear SCREAMS and munching; they decide the kids need to lay off the room for a while.

The Kids act strangely when deprived of the room and the unhealthy side effect may affect the parents.

I was surprised to see that, although this story was published in 1950, the main plot involved a smart house, which interested me because technology was not as advanced back then as it is today. This story was interesting to read; the creative details about the virtual reality nursery also made me feel like I was able to see the veldt with the lions. The story's ending also surprised me, even though there was foreshadowing; I was shocked to see the lengths the children went to so their nursery would not get shut down.

Read this short story for a film/stage production design class for an upcoming assignment. Quite like my decision to pick this short story based solely on what the teacher briefly said - has some effectively unnerving moments, and for something released originally in the 50s there's some shockingly timely elements when it comes to technology and parenting.

Our 'Book Club for Writers' (Rainforest Writing Retreat) read this story and analysed it to see why it is such a successful short story. Ray Bradbury was certainly the master of short stories and this book serves as an excellent example of his work.

In the beginning I was very confused and really did not understand the point of the story. Still a little confusing but I did get a better understanding that the short story "The Veldt" is about a family iwht little responsibility because technology has done everything for them.

I enjoyed reading this story! "The Veldt" is a story about a family with a special room that can make any place come to life. The kids start spending too much time in the room, and it becomes dangerous. It shows how technology can take over our lives and cause problems if we're not careful.
