The battle is won, Voldemort is dead, but the war is far from over. In the new Death Eater regime, Draco Malfoy does what he must to survive and keep his mother safe. Now a highly trained assassin, Draco has learned to think of his targets as inhuman beings, but when he is tasked with killing someone from his past, he can no longer hide from the horrors of the world around him.
Had to skim my way through a lot of this. Originally gave it 3 ⭐️ but after two weeks I feel like I could barely remember what happened, so my rating went down. The parts I remember were cute or contributed to an interesting premise but I remember not liking how things resolved with what happened to Pansy.
All the air rushed from his lungs and his blood pounded in his ears as he read the name of his next kill:
*Hermione Jean Granger*
He had heard many screams in his life, but few haunted him the way Granger’s had.
Narcissa stood, her eyes swimming with tears. “If I weren’t here and you didn’t have to worry about me, would you still do this?”
Draco didn’t reply, but he didn’t need to. They both knew the answer.
No. He wouldn’t do it. He wouldn’t even consider it.
His mother made a thoughtful little noise before bending to kiss the top of his head. She turned and left the room.
A gust of wind swept through the passage, freeing sections of frizzy hair from its plait and whipping them around her face. She squinted against the gust and brought one hand up to brush the strands out of her eyes, still on high alert. One small strand had become stuck to her lips, and he watched as she pulled it free. Her dark pink lips parted slightly as the hair dragged through her lipstick. His grip on his wand loosened slightly and in that brief moment of hesitation, Granger disapparated with a crack.
*Fuck.*
She was gone.
He had failed.
*Fuck.*
*Draco Malfoy*
*Surrendering*
Luna was still babbling away. He nodded every now and then to humor her, but he wasn’t sure how he was expected to actually carry on a conversation with the witch. Most of what she said was utter nonsense.
Cho pressed on, ignoring Potter’s warnings. “Did they ever make you torture someone?”
“Cho,” chastised Charlie.
“Did you ever *see* anyone get tortured?” Cho asked.
Silence befell the table save for a sharp intake of air to his left. He glanced toward the sound. Granger was red faced, eyes cast down, her right hand subtly tugging at the left sleeve of her jumper.
“Ah, but you *are* damaged though, aren’t you?”
It was like she’d been hit with a silencing spell. Her mouth hung open for a moment before snapping shut. As if subconsciously, her right hand came up to cover her left forearm protectively.
Draco realized his mistake at once and immediately regretted his words. He refused to backpedal now though. He’d wounded her, isn’t that what he had wanted?
“You *know* I am,” she breathed venomously. The words hung between them, the silence pressing on his ears as harshly as her shouts had a moment ago.
Something akin to guilt twisted inside of him. Before he could reply, she marched past him and disappeared up the stairs.
He opened his mouth, his words filling the empty room. “Aren’t we all?”
“I was excellent,” Draco growled darkly. “I didn’t like it, but I was very good… It’s probably the *only* thing I’m good at.” He’d added the last bit under his breath, but judging by the pitying look in her eye, she’d heard him clearly. Why had he said that? Was there something about being in the Order that forced one to reveal sappy personal truths? He cursed himself for showing her any vulnerability.
“I’m sure that’s not true,” Granger murmured with a frown.
It was perhaps the nicest thing she’d said to him, and Draco felt something stir within him. Gratitude, perhaps?
*Trust* . She trusted him. Trusted him like he was a good person, like he was a decent man.
Like he wasn’t a *killer.*
“It’s not my job to protect them. It’s my job to protect *you* ,” he reminded her.
His Healers encouraged him to use a cane when he walked, claiming that it would help him keep his balance and allow him to walk further, thereby building up his strength again more quickly. He had tried once, pressing his useless hand precariously against the cane handle and hobbling carefully across his room to the loo. But once he caught sight of himself in the full mirror he vowed to never pick it up again. Leaning on the wooden cane, with his sallow eyes, waxy skin, and hair grown out from lack of care over the past month, he had never looked more like his father.
Draco grimaced and pulled his bedroom door shut. “She’s my *healer* , Pansy,” he growled warningly.
“And that’s all?” Pansy prompted, arching a brow quizzically.
Draco’s heart thudded in his chest.
*What’s one less Mudblood in the world?*
“That’s all,” he insisted, turning away from her and walking carefully down the stairs.
“And I never got to *decide* who lived and who died. Dolohov gave me a name, and I did as I was told. I had no choice in the matter.”
“You chose with me,” she breathed.
The air rushed from Draco’s lungs. “Yes, I suppose I did,” he said, his lips twitching up slightly.
“It was your eyes,” he answered. “Among other things.” His eyes flickered to her lips briefly. “You just seemed so... *alive.* ”
Granger wiped away a tear and smiled at him as if he’d just said the most wonderful thing in the world. “You see?” she sighed. “There’s a heart in you after all.”
She leaned in, and her lips landed on his cheek, just above the corner of his mouth. And as she pulled back, he knew she was right, for he could feel his heart nearly bursting in his chest.
Listen this gave me everything I needed.

i loved loved loved this fic! i’ve read A LOT of dramione stories and this one for me ranks top 5. it was put together well with the perfect amount of angst, ~spice~, plot & action!
edit review: i just finished this for the second time and i still love just as much!!
edit review (third time reading): i’m sad to say that this time around i didn’t love it as much as before😭 i’m still keeping my 5 star rating on here but probably knocking it down to 4.5 in my brain.
Telling me the story instead of showing me and Excessive Villain Speeches. This book did both plus a bunch of other stuff that didn’t make contextual sense.
•Way too fast paced with big time jumps •None of the characters felt authentic •Relationship moved too quickly with D & H •Plot twists were very obvious •Glaring plot holes •Not enough pining
DNF. Interesting premise where Draco was an assassin that switches sides. However, the writing felt very shallow, and most of the dialogue made them seem very one-dimensional.
Needed a dramione fix and this one was only 150k words. It’s a wartime fic with assassin Draco who defects and joins the Order. Hermione is a healer. Minimal Ron bashing. Very minimal secondary character development. Plot is decent and a couple good twists. It’s a mid-tier fic for me.
Just when you think the second wizard war is over, the Death Eaters go "You know what? We are not finished being awful so we decided to elect a new leader and carry on because we are bored".
Not sure how I felt launching straight into Draco murdering someone right off the bat, why is it always Malfoy Manor that is the headquarters of the bad guys? For once it would be nice if the house was used differently (someone please write that fan fic!).
Draco's face when he learns Hermione will be his mentor after defecting to the Order was gold. By the way Hermione: he tried to assassinate you two days before so no hard feelings if you can't trust his word.
This had a good mix of battle scenes, family relationships and intrigue without needing to resort to filler chapters. The relationship between Draco and Hermione was not rushed, the miscommunication trope was frustrating though.
Kingsley was given his well- earned duelling masterclass opportunity here, watching go head to head with Dolohov was done well. The quiet ones are the ones to watch, after all :)
I wonder what happened to Draco's stuffed toy dragon?
This was a confortable read .it was cozy and calm even though it was in the war zone and death it felt comfy and filed friendships either warmth ✨ 😌.
Love the characters and thier vibe with each other and how they grow to love Draco .how he grew to feel home with them ♥. I liked the pace of the book it was over a year but it felt so smooth .i didn't feel bored maybe at the end but not at all in the most of the book
I loved thier relationship how they come from rivals to forced partners to kind of friends to lovers. I loved how they realy took thier time to fall in love with each other 🥰.she realy saw him and accepted him and understood him at all times with his damaged soul and broken heart 💔 they were literally two fouls in love and they didn't even know it .the way they seek comfort from each other was so cute and sweet .he loved her and wanted nothing more than to protect her and have a redemption in hopes to have a future with her ❤. Theo and pensy were unexpected. The way each one has his own character depth made me choked cause I didn't see that coming and I kind of suspected pensy just like him . End23/09/2024
Dragon in the Dark is an assassin/healer matchup. Voldy is dead but Dolovo is a dictator so there's your fresh spin. The real villain is a bit of an obvious twist but it's fun. There's some safe house mischief with polyjuice and then Draco sabotages a fellow side switcher as well. Unfortunately, this Draco is overrun with guilt quite often from his choices and it causes quite a commotion. Hermione is working on a research project to offset some death eater projects. There's a bit of a healer/patient moment which is really sweet. Towards the end there's a moment that frustrates me every time I reread this. Draco has to take care of a situation and Hermione has a hard time with how it was handled. It's probably a realistic reaction but in fiction makes me want to shake her. The end is pretty satisfying and the final battle is well-written. The villain gets a second chance (where I don't believe he deserves it and I scream no every time) to show how Draco's character has grown. I would say the romance is slower-paced Overall, I would say it's a good read just to watch the same people fall in love all over again. I rate all fics 5 stars because free work doesn't deserve harsh criticism.

Lovely Dramione story with lots of elements I like.. this is an action/suspense story with romance weaved in. And there is also an element of whodunnit running through. I loved a very competent Draco, protective of Hermione, who is a healer in this story. Everything about this was great, except Hermione’s out-of-character behavior towards the latter parts of the book. Towards the 3/4th mark, Hermione’s behavior is super frustrating- she knows always that Draco is a reformed assassin but is still upset when she sees him ruthlessly fight to save her life. And she responds in an over-the-top-dramatic manner by ignoring him and breaking off their relationship. Anyway, those chapters left a sour taste and I’m dinging stars because of it. Giving this book 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 stars since Goodreads doesn’t do half stars.
I am obsessed with any and all Dramione. And this one was no different 🫡 I liked the different take on this one (the others I’ve read have been fairly similar) - it follows the end war, Voldemort is dead and Antonin takes over the Death Eaters, training Draco to be the best assassin there is. After receiving a hit for someone from his past, he decides to defect and join the Order. His journey to being a better person for our certain curly headed greatest witch there is, was so sweet 😍😭😭😭 this Draco would walk through fire for Hermione and I loved it. They’re enemies to friends to lovers was so so good. It was a thiccccc read but honestly I flew through it. There’s all the drama and suspense of a typical Dramione, and the tension and spice was *chefs kiss* I’m obsessed.
I love war time fics. Probably my fav genre of Dramione. This story was so great, l absolutely loved the battle scenes, but I had to drop it a star for Hermione’s third act whatever the fuck that was. Like, be so for real right now girly pop. He saved you single handedly from 6 death eaters, while you acted like those women is horror movies that I’m always screaming at “DO SOMETHING!”. And it gave you the ick and you suddenly saw him differently? No. I cannot handle that. AND THEN you have the audacity to tell him you wanted him to kill **** at the end?? Flip flop flip flop make up your damn mind. This man has had enough emotional trauma without you adding to it.
And THEO?! are you KIDDING ME?! do not approve. Great book though

H is a healer in the order when assigned D to mentor/ supervise after he defected from the death eaters. D is was used as a highly skilled assassin and expert at wards before defecting however is much nicer than in most other ff’s I’ve read. This is a slow burn/ friends to lovers. D and H become begin opening up to each other after D is captured then poisoned by the death eaters. H slowly heals him back to health and I loved how they built trust and friendship before even starting a romantic relationship. The struggle a little when H witnesses D in action, but ultimately their love never wavers. 4 stars bc gets pretty slow after like 60% but still enjoyed!
This story has Assassin!Draco defecting and Healer Hermione in charge of his defection probation in the Order. Slow burn. Lots violence. It made me cry. Cw: Dark Theo but it isn't in the tags. Also watch out for the terrifying bio weapons. 😳
Spoiler: honestly it really hurt me that Theo was evil in this fic especially if you think about that it was him who told George that magical vibrators sounded brilliant while pretending to be Charlie or that he had a lovely companionable day with Draco while pretending to be Dean. It's made me emotional.

I like that while Harry didn't like Draco in the beginning, he and Hermione weren't petty. They understand this is a war, and Draco is valuable, their personal differences aside. They'll use him to win this war, instead of throwing him aside because of petty schoolyard taunts. I believe that's how Harry and Hermione would actually respond. But they still give him a chance at redemption, and give him solid advice. ALSO BADASS DRACO, LITERALLY MAKES ME SMILE SO HARD 😁 I love when Draco fights from the shadows and shows no mercy. It just feels accurate. No posturing, no large fancy back and forth duels, just effective and efficient. Being proficient in warding is also extremely interesting, I loved that part. The ending made me so happy, I thought this was a very solid fic and had no trouble getting through it 💕
Don’t want to be mean the pacing was good and kept me reading but somehow the beginning was so strong and had so much promise and builds a lot of expectations. However they’re mainly flitting from safe house to safe house and raids and things feel rushed like there’s not enough depth to the characters. I know it’s from Draco’s perspective, I felt like I wasn’t getting enough Hermione or at least the Hermione I know. I enjoyed it overall and especially like the ending line
“And when he held her in his arms, he felt like he was finally in the light. ”
I love Draco's Pov and more if a lot of it it's him pining after Hermione and saying things like 'I would murder the whole world if only I could keep her safe'. Yes, we love possesive protective Draco. Great fan. The plot is okay (maybe the plot-twists are a bit predictible) and there's just the right amount of Ron bashing without making it completely annoying. It's a quick, simple but excellent read. Especially if you've been reading a lot of dark Dramione and just want something still in war topic but not too dense.
Loved this Dramione fanfic! I read this right after finishing Manacled. Dragon In the Dark had grittiness to it without being dystopian. A much easier read and faster pace (that was my critique of Manacled.) I loved having the whole book from Draco’s POV. He was a great character with his own voice that was consistent as he evolved from Death Eater to Order member and learned to accept himself. Great story and well written! Note there is a lot of spice starting about half way through.
Dramione It was great. Draco POV, which I normally don't prefer because I don't get a good sense of her feelings, did pretty well. Theo as the main villain was fun. Draco started as a death eater assassin, defected after his mother escaped. Joined the order. Was captured and almost killed. She healed him and helped him through his recovery. They bonded. There was war and fighting and the war ended. I enjoyed this one. 4, I think.
I really enjoyed this fic. Draco is a complex character, and his POV brings us closer to his vulnerability, which doesn't come through as much when the story is narrated by Hermione.
The story's development is also excellent! The romance is great, but the background context is what really captivates me the most.
I felt tense and suspicious at several points, allowing myself to be misled by Draco's opinions, and I shared his anxiety in many situations.
War AU, Draco switches sides after tasked with assassinating Granger. The story felt lacking most of the time, like I didn't feel the killings or dread or any major emotions. It had some interesting plot points but mostly it felt very lackluster and couldn't touch my emotions or feelings in any impact full way.
