"The Judge and the Left-Footed Leaders" explores the messages of the Old Testament books of Judges and Ruth. The book of Judges describes a nation strikingly similar to the modern United States. Israel was racked by violence, greed, sexual abuse, political turmoil, and racial tension. On the other hand, the book of Ruth portrays a community bound by kindness and civility. Ruth demonstrates suffering transformed by love and how that quality of living can infiltrate and change a culture. Judges and Ruth were meant to be read together. Judges is a mirror and a warning; Ruth is an inspirational map to recovery. This book examines how they foil one another, and what we can take away from it.
Excellent book that describes the nature and heart of God by explaining the books of Judges and Ruth. The author provides background information, and uses both scholarly and popular references to help readers understand ancient Israel and how it compares to modern times. Using a fresh perspective, the author gives some surprising results. For instance, the angel told Samson’s parents he would have unexpected strength but didn’t say he would have big muscles. What if his extraordinary strength was in a skinny body? Now that would get some attention! The author makes complicated subjects easier to understand and puts things together that I hadn’t known. I did not know Samson was the judge during the times of Ruth. But, my favorite part is how the author compares the dark big picture story of the Israelite nation in Judges with the personal redemptive story of Ruth. I love reading books that help me know and love God better and see how He worked through the Old Testament to lead people toward Jesus. Highly recommend!
