Carolyn Keene

Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

Title: The Paris Connection
Author: Carolyn Keene,
Series: Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys: Super Mystery, #6
Format: mass market paperback
Length: 219 pages
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis: Nancy and Bess are in Paris posing as publicists with Johnny Crockett's World Hunger Rock Tour. But before long, they run into the Hardys and discover that their separate cases are connected!

Favourite character: Frank and Joe
Least favourite character: N/A

Mini-review: This was a pretty good crossover, but not enough NancyxFrank in my opinion. I wish Frank had referenced Callie at the very least, but no such luck. The mystery was good, slightly solvable but good. One minor character I feel like it’s slightly based on David Suchet’s version of Poirot, but it was kind of fun. It was great to have a recurring character in Alan Wales (from Nancy Drew Files books 1 (Secrets Can Kill) and 2 (Deadly Intent)).

Fan-cast:
Nancy Drew - Katherine McNamara
Frank Hardy - Richard Harmon
Joe Hardy - Dylan Playfair
Bess Marvin - Abigail Breslin
Fiona Fox - Ellie Bamber
Dr. Fox - Martin Shaw
Ned Nickerson - Ansel Elgort
Alan Wales - Austin Butler
Johnny Crockett - Riker Lynch
Jules - Pierre Boulanger
Kevin Fuller - Tom Hiddleston
Roger Hart - James Maslow
Ruby Bloom - Taylor Swift
Brent Travis - Martin Freeman
Commissaire François Guillaume - David Suchet ;)

It was a real treat to see Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys team-up in this mystery story. The mystery is decent, but the nostalgia is epic. Fans of the two series will enjoy it.

It’s always très bien when Nancy teams up with Frank and Joe. Bess is along for the adventure, but no George! This mystery has everything you’re looking for: suspicious characters, suspenseful action scenes, and SMUGGLERS. Why hasn’t a streaming service made shows out of these yet?

James I'd like you to know that I am still holding on to this book after so many years. I wish we were given a second chance. Will never let go when that happens.

Lots of twists and turns in this book. Not a lot of yearning from Nancy and Frank, but I take what I can get.

Cleanliness: There is probably more romance in this than parents realize. Message me to request this be bumped to the top of the list so you can clean up your child's copy!

**Like my reviews? Then you should follow me! Because I have hundreds more just like this one. With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

So Follow or Friend me here on GoodReads! You’ll see my updates as I’m reading and know which books I’m liking and what I’m not finishing and why. You’ll also be able to utilize my library for looking up titles to see whether the book you’re thinking about reading next has any objectionable content or not. From swear words, to romance, to bad attitudes (in children’s books), I cover it all!

I really enjoyed this book. :o) I found it to be well written, with a plot that is just complicated enough to keep me guessing. I liked having a lot of different suspects and I must admit I am not a good detective because I never would have guessed who the Conductor really was. Lots of surprises in this book, right to the end, which conveniently leaves the door wide open for future cases for both Nancy Drew and especially the Hardy boys.

I guess the only thing I have to complain about is the romance. I wasn't at all bothered by the fact that Joe seemed to have a thing for Fiona, but Nancy's reactions to Johnny were a bit annoying. I suppose that comes with the territory when one is reading young adult novels out of nostalgia - I might be a bit of a groupie in my own right, but I've outgrown the teeny aspect of these books!

I read Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys throughout my school and college days.
Nancy Drew is an amateur detective who solves crimes with occasional help from her best friends, Bess and George and, her boyfriend Ned. She also has occasional help from her father Carson Drew who runs a private law practice. From finding stolen goods to missing persons and solving mysterious happenings, Nancy is a force of nature.
Until I discovered that Carolyn Keene is a pen name for a whole bunch of ghostwriters, I used to feel confused about the slight differences in each character from books to book over the many series of Nancy Drew mysteries. I like the character of Nancy best in the original books written by Mildred Wirt Benson where Nancy is truly a character to root for – an independent and street smart girl with a penchant for trouble.
