There is a manhunt for a New York state senator accused of murder. Cemeteries in Colorado are being mysteriously stripped of their sacred treasures. Television reporter JC Snow trails both criminal investigations to a Colorado ski resort. This is book two in the Murder on Skis series.
Phil Bayly is an American author. CARPE SKI 'em, released in November of 2025, is his seventh novel in the Murder on Skis Mystery series. Bayly has been named a finalist for three American Fiction Awards and was awarded a silver medal at the CIPA Colorado Book Awards.
CARPE SKI 'em begins with a woman's fatal plummet from a chair lift at a ski resort in Colorado. Her husband's disappearance is poorly timed. But there are plenty of colorful characters in ski country who could attract suspicion.
Bayly's other MOS mysteries:
A SMALL MOUNTAIN MURDER (2024) begins with the disappearance of a ski industry executive while visiting a small ski hill in Wisconsin. The investigation crosses paths with a crusading newspaper journalist and someone who thinks the stakes are worth killing for.
THE MAN WHO HAD 9 LIVES (2023) is Bayly's fifth novel in the Murder on Skis Mystery series and has been named a finalist for two American Fiction Awards. The story begins with an avalanche and tumbles toward murder and mystery at a Colorado Ski Resort.
WITCH WINDOW (2022) takes off as two bicycle riders, on a hot summer day, find the body of a man dressed to go skiing. The investigation travels from New York to Vermont.
BACK DIRT (2021) was also named a finalist for the American Fiction Awards. The tale unfolds in the adirondacks of Upstate New York. A murder suspect from Colorado has surfaced there. And an archaeological dig for old bones at the Battle Ax Ski Resort finds fresh blood.
LOVING LUCY (2020) was shortlisted for the Murder and Mayhem Award. The story takes JC Snow from Albany, New York to the Snow Hat Ski Resort in Colorado. JC follows the manhunt for a New York state senator accused of murder, and a petty thief who may be more than police bargained for.
MURDER on SKIS (2019) tells the tale of Victims caught in the claws of the Grizzly Mountain Ski Resort in Montana. The discovery of a frozen body buried beneath a ski run leads to the re-examination of other deaths previously ruled 'accidental.' JC Snow and police explore whether there is a cold blooded killer in the red hot resort community.
A veteran of television and radio news in New York, Colorado, Wyoming and Pennsylvania, Bayly was born and raised in Evanston, Illinois. He now resides in Saratoga County, New York.
In his second book “Loving Lucy”, Phil continues the adventures of JC Snow, a salty reporter for a TV station in Denver. Phil doesn’t just repeat the essence of “Murder on Skis” but further develops JC Snow in a purposeful trail of murder and intrigue. In “Murder on Skis”, JC was more of the “accidental crime solver” with his long distance girlfriend. In “Loving Lucy”, JC becomes more of a mystery problem solver and one of the people who can put together the pieces of a coast to coast crime. Don’t want to give too much away, but JC has connections in Albany and lives in Denver. He understands the nuances of each city and how to “play the game” to piece together the events in both locales. A senator in NY who kills his wife and is on the run and a sophisticated Colorado criminal who has a link to resolution. "GOOD TO THE LAST DROP"
Phil excels in character development. Some readers will want to “get to the point” but Phil wants the reader to thoroughly know the characters as he develops them along with the plot line. The reader will recognize why the details of character development were important. Phil weaves the the real details of JC’s Denver environment along with the fictious ski area.. If you are familiar with Denver, you will walk with JC around the places he frequents around 16th street in Denver. The ski area is an amalgamation of ski places in Colorado including frequent visits to Nederland whose motto is ”Life is Better up Here” Mirroring “Murder on Skis” the reader is not totally sure of the killer in Colorado and how it links to the senator in NY until the end. Do not read ahead as you will miss the details which are the glue that holds the story together. My only disappointment was the story ended! I have a feeling that JC Snow is not done with his adventures yet!
This is the second mystery featuring TV reporter JC Snow. JC is entangled in a big investigation that is from him new home in Denver and old residence of New York. There is plenty of suspense and mystery, with loads of character development and interaction. It's an engaging experience or a read and a real page turner.
