_____________PRAISE FOR EVA HUDSON"I was immediately struck by the plotting savvy and grip-factor of Eva Hudson's writing – she is a natural storyteller" - Sophie Hannah
"Ingrid is a fascinating character" - James Oswald
Eva Hudson was born and raised in south London. Before taking up writing seriously at the age of 43, Eva worked as a local government officer, singer, dotcom entrepreneur, portrait artist, web designer, project manager and content editor.
In 2011 her first novel, The Loyal Servant, won the inaugural Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize from Cambridge University. The book was also shortlisted for UK TV's People's Novelist Competition.
In 2013, Eva received a terminal cancer diagnosis and this spurred her on to write the book she always wanted to read, a female Jack Reacher adventure. She created Ingrid Skyberg, an FBI agent working out the US embassy in London who's tenacious, resilient and determined, qualities Eva herself had in abundance as she went through treatment. Before she died in 2015, Eva had published four Skyberg books. She also left an unfinished manuscript and notes for future adventures with her partner and editor Jo Monroe who continues to write the series.

This was the fourth book I have read in this series. The central character, Ingrid Skyberg, is someone I enjoy reading about. She is an FBI agent working in London, and the previous books were very good mysteries. I feel in this one we have quite a departure from previous books in the series, as Ingrid is in Sweden and not on FBI business, in fact if they found out what Ingrid was doing not only would she be sacked but she would be doing jail time. For me this just lost the central tenet that the books are about. Don't get me wrong this was still a good book and I enjoyed reading it, but just not as much as with previous books in the series. This book was very contemporary dealing with the crisis in Syria and the potential for terrorism this is leading to, perhaps for this reason it wasn't escapist enough, which is a central reason a lot of people read for. In this book because Ingrid was going rogue, there was a lack of characterisation and interaction with some characters we met in previous books. As a result of this I only gave the book 3.5 stars, but I would still encourage you to read because as I say it was an enjoyable read. I will be conitinuing this series as I do enjoy the character. If you have not read the others in the series this holds up very well as a standalone.
I was given a free copy if the book for a fair and honest review.
This time Ingrid goes to Sweden on an undercover mission to repay a debt owed to her friend Nick. What began as a somewhat normal operation turns into a crazy ride for Ingrid. A case of mistaken identity and terrorists are making her mission a treacherous affair.
Ingrid Skyberg must repay a debt and the consequences of what she must do almost cost her her life. After getting her instructions and getting herself to Sweden, there are events and situations that plunge her into real danger. Not only danger from her captors, but also from freezing. The descriptions of the conditions she finds herself in seem too much to bear, but she survives.
Ingrid's commitment to completing the mission keep her going in spite of her suffering. Her compassion for others also keeps her from thinking only about herself and her own survival. She makes some silly mistakes, but her inner voice keeps telling her it won't make any difference. She will find a way to cope and come out ahead. That voice seems to be prophetic as she gets one lucky break after another. This unbelievability of her tremendous good fortune is the main reason I didn't give the book 5 stars. It is a gripping novel and each new situation makes the story a compelling one to read.
One interesting characteristic of the story is the periodic diversion to testimony for a committee who is reviewing after the fact the events that are unfolding in real time for Ingrid. It gives a hint as to what will be coming next and makes getting back to Ingrid's story more urgent, but also allays some fear that things might not turn out as the reader hopes. This is an interesting way of supporting the story and I found it a nice distraction from the tense moments of the main narrative. I'm sure Ingrid Skyberg fans will enjoy this book.
This was a page turner! Written from two perspectives, it drew the reader in and didn't let go. Ingrid Skyberg was in Sweden on a secret mission for the US government. Using the name of a distant cousin as a cover, Skyberg was pulled into a kidnapping and taken into the frozen Swedish woods without any explanation. Why was she chosen and how would she escape without jeopardizing her true mission? I read this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down!
Fast paced, exciting book. Ingrid has to pay back another agency for cleaning up her mess in an earlier book. She is on this mission in Sweden and it turns into a mess. Things keep happening to her…. Love the series, it is one of my favorites. Thanks for all of the great stories and hours of good reading, Eva and Jo!!
Excellent the plot keep on moving along quite nicely. Enjoyable plot and realistic. Action pack as well as the character Frustrations relating to the other characters in the book. Well worth the time to read
FBI, CIA or some other three letter agency, agent is tapped to smuggle secret components out of Sweden. No ID, no back up, no help. After being kidnapped, she is finally able to complete her mission but not without casualties.
Another great thriller in the Ingrid Skyberg series
After reading the trilogy, 1,2 and 3, I ordered 4,5, 6 & 7, dammit I read in the wrong order. Now going to book four....this was brilliant, totally gripped, like a spy movie. Very descriptive too
The previous books have had more action involved. I found this quite slow going at times and skimmed through pages where she was alone with her thoughts.
Below Zero is an intelligent, complex, well crafted thriller, that uses time lines seamlessly.
The sixth entry in the Ingrid Skyberg series is a little different from the others. First of all, Ingrid is on her own, no supporting characters and she has definitely matured making her and the story more complex and interesting.
A must read for thriller aficionados, especially since this is a stand alone. No need to have read the previous five books in this series, but once you've read Below Zero, you'll want to read the others.
I'm not going to write much. Bravo on finishing Eva Hudson's book. This book is about a very dangerous undercover assignment that FBI Agent Ingrid Skyberg is forced into as a repayment to someone for having covered up for her in a previous assignment that involved people having been killed. This book is so intense with action in Sweden. Hang on to your seat, it's fast paced you will have a hard time realizing it all takes place in just a few days. Enjoying reading this book.
I love Ingrid as a character but this story just felt a bit too far-fetched. It was all about Ingrid out on her own, but I think I actually prefer it when she's back in London with the usual cast of supporting characters (I want to know what happened with Ralph after the brief mention in this story). Nevertheless I'm glad Jo has taken on the challenge of continuing Eva's work and I look forward to more about Ingrid in the future.
Another great Ingrid Skyberg book by Eva Hudson. A very fast paced book which is relieved by the interspersed police investigation and interviews. Seeing it all happen first hand from Ingrid's point if view and then the later hashing of the inquiry into the investigation and action from the police point of view makes the book not only interesting but also more credible. A definite must read! I wish the book had been longer.
Here we have Ingrid in a fight for her life, with no outside support. She appears to make it just barely through one calamity after another by the skin of her teeth! The interspersed narrative of witness interviews seems to make the current situation more like a flashback. That aside, there is plenty of action to keep the reader occupied.
Another Skyberg story, but with a twist. Whilst I felt the overall story line was a little far fetched it was still an excellent read. Well worth a read as either a stand-alone novel or as part of the series.
