Lost magic. Fading hope. A dying race.

Trapped in our world, the fae are dying from drugs, contaminants, and hopelessness. Kicked out of the dark fae court for tainting his body and magic, Riasg only wants one to die a bit faster. It’s already the end of his world, after all.

But while scoring his last hit, he discovers something that shouldn’t exist. Not anymore. And he can’t ignore it as much as he wants to. But to save what might just be the last hope for his kind, he might first have to save himself. And that is a lot to ask…

Especially when the Dark Queen’s Huntress tracks him down. Riasg knows the Queen of the Dark Fae will do anything to possess the last hope for their kind that he hides, but how can he resist her Huntress when she offers him the one thing he craves more than even hope?

Has he found a companion he can trust at the end of the world, or is this just another of the Dark Queen’s tricks?

Autumn Birt has created a wonderfully dark and modern fairytale for adults. It takes you on a vivid journey with a Fae-drug-addict, Riasg, as he tries to save an ancient Fae from his own Dark Queen.
I love to see fantasy mixing with reality, and Autumn has brought old-world creatures into our modern society with a very real sting. The idea that everything humans have done to the world is destroying the magic that once was is an enticing and frightening idea. Listening to the plight of these characters makes me feel worse about the damage we are doing to the earth, and yes, I know fairies aren’t real, but you can’t help but empathize with these creatures.
The only complaint I have is because this is a novella, it’s short, and I was left with this want for so much more. Luckily, I understand there is more to come.
I would highly recommend this read for fantasy and fairy-tale fans! Can’t wait for the sequel!

The Light in the Darkness begins a fae post-apocalyptic series called the Cailite Ré. Life if difficult for a species who has lost its magic and where most of the planet has become a toxic wasteland, especially when humankind doesn't even realize you exist.

Discover why magic is lost and what a species on the brink of losing all hope will do to survive in this dark fantasy tale!

Was a bit hard to read the names and some places and events given its a journey into a different world painted by Autumn Brit. But once you get into the story, you find yourself at the edge of your seat. Amazing and captivating story that leaves you wanting more.

Its a journey Riasg must take to protect the future of magic born from the past!

A great start to a series. Riasg is a fae living in a poisonous world and just wants to end things until he stumbles upon a very sick old fae named Sgleo. With assistance from Bramble, he hides Sgleo until he has recovered somewhat and in doing so finds something worth living for.

Dark Fae Outcast is a wonderful taste of the Tainted Fae trilogy by Autumn M. Birt. I believe this is a prequel to the trilogy, in which we get a vague sense of the intrigues of the opposing fae courts, other fantastical species, and even a hierarchy of sorts within the fae in general over milennia.

When Riasg, a hopeless and miserable dark fae who is tainted by the drug known as ola, is evicted from his own kingdom and essentially left to die, he happens upon something more powerful and ancient than anything else he's ever encountered. This secret may be his key to returning to his dark queen, Efflyn, or perhaps it may lead to an even more complicated and intriguing adventure.

I am curious to see where this series goes and what choices Riasg and his gang of misfits end up making! This novella gave me a found family sort of feel, or at least the beginnings of it. I really enjoyed it!

Another wonderful book by Autumn Birt. This time however we stay right where we are on planet Earth and learn about a secret race known as Fae. Even if you THINK you know all there is to know about this race, you can add some new things to that vast knowledge.
We finally learn what has happened to magic in our world as we follow a lovable cast of characters that will make you fully believe as every good fantasy book should. I enjoyed this book so much that I've been prodding people to go read it when it finally is released. TODAY IS THAT DAY!
Autumn Birt is a fantastic writer and I have always enjoyed her books. This one has me really interested in the journey these characters are taking and I am eagerly waiting for the next book! It is these types of things that make me more than happy to be a advanced reader for her books.

I really like this take on the fae in the modern world. I hadn't really expected that plastics would be a worse poison than iron but it does make sense given that you can't avoid them.

The characters introduced in this novella quickly becom people who you care about and want to succeed even if you want to shake a little sense into one or two occasionally. I look forward to continuing the tale started here.

The Fae are dying because of human activity, but one bent on a slow suicide through drugs, suddenly finds something to live and fight for. I enjoyed this because it had a different slant on the magical realm and its people than other books that I have read.

I really liked this novella. It showed how current culture might affect the Fae. Something else I enjoyed was that the author included more beings than just elf like or human like creatures in her definition of Fae. If the taste the author gives with this novella carries through the rest of the series, it will be well worth reading.

If you’re looking for an original modern day fairy-tale look no further than “The Light in the Darkness (Cailite Re, Book 1)”, by Autumn M. Birt. If you’ve read Autumn’s other epic fantasy books you will be aware of just how talented and skilled she is in telling a story. While her other books are creations of another world and places in time with incredible characters, this one is set in the here-and-now in places that are familiar to us all with equally wonderful characters. This installment starts off in Europe and the majority of the story takes place there. Towards the end of the book we have the fae characters traversing the skies via modern aircraft to the United State. The one thing that I found most astounding was how Autumn was able to bring these mythological old world characters (the fae) into the modern world with such ease, and I must say most convincingly as well. She makes sense of the unimaginable, she convinces the reader that this is all very natural and the way things are. This is the beginning of something very special and I’m so anxious to see if the magic can be saved and where it will take us next. Come from the Darkness into the Light and see all that is possible~!

From the back cover: They were supposed to be immortal, but then the gates closed.

Trapped in our world, their kind are dying from drugs, contaminants, and hopelessness. Kicked out of the dark fae court for tainting his body and magic, Riasg only wants one thing: to die a bit faster. It’s already the end of his world, after all.

But while scoring his last hit, he discovers something that shouldn’t exist. Not anymore. And he can’t ignore it as much as he wants to. But to save what might just be the last hope for his kind, he might first have to save himself. And that is a lot to ask.

I received a free copy of this book from the author to prepare me for the release of the next books of the Tainted Fae series. I knew I enjoyed her books because I read the Born of Water series several years ago. I am reminded of why I enjoyed that series as much as I did. This book was amazing, pulling me into the dying world of the fae, touching upon the issue of our poisoned world destroying magic.

Told entirely from the POV of Raisg, the drug-addled fae outcast and hero, the reader can feel the struggles he endures. Early on, the narrator describes “Raisg felt as if he were part of the fixed things that people swirled by and that he watched the human world with a tree’s eyes.” Since he sees himself as part of a dying world, he wants nothing more than to die and end his misery. The drug to which he is addicted, ola, is a double-edged sword, like most drugs. The temporary feeling of elation is quickly replaced by endless despair. He struggles with the desire to no longer desire this drug that controls him.

Not too surprisingly, the cure seems to be worse than the disease, but Raisg has suffered enough to realize he cannot continue down the same path. “Raisg tried to stand, but his legs felt like they’d been reconfigured with extra joints.” The cure “tasted like ambrosia mixed with rancid garbage.” The descriptions of the high associated with ola as well as the descriptions of the cure are vivid and relatable. “If ola brought the feeling of magic and belonging, Gavin’s cure made him (Raisg) feel like his insides were being sucked out through his belly button while he was powerless.”

Sgleo, the ancient fae, is described using words that make him sound like a human tree. “...his thin arm appeared like a denuded branch drifting in the wind.” “His face looked like a mask made from an ancient oak.” He has “twiggy fingers” and “A mouth like a cut in a tree chewed as if Sgleo were a goat working on a mouthful of leather.” Meanwhile, another character, a brownie called Bramble, is described very cleverly, like a plant or a weed, taking on whatever horticultural form is required to camouflage himself. He’s small enough to fit in a pocket, just slightly larger than Raisg’s hand, covered with spines, has beetle-like eyes, and sharp thorn-like teeth.I chuckled when “Bramble ran with the grace of a drunk tumbleweed through the ferns.”

Raisg’s quest is to transport Sgleo from Scotland to Boston. Though very powerful magically, Sgleo is unable to protect himself because he is so easily poisoned by everything in his environment (toxic fumes, pesticides, metals, and so forth—all the things that are inherent to modern-day life). Raisg needs to overcome his addiction, then outsmart Efflyn (the fae queen who seeks Sgleo). Although there are sure to be additional obstacles, the only goal in this installment is to make the trip to Boston. Once they reach the relative safety of Wind River, this episode ends and we’ll need to wait for the next book. I am so looking forward to it.

The Light in the Darkness is a dark urban fantasy that draws you in and keeps you reading. This is Cailite Re and the Fae are losing their magic and face the very end of their existence. Dark Fae Riasg is banished from his world but in his despair he begins to learn that with help from other magical beings and a little trust there may just be a tiny glimmer of hope. Full of wonderful characters this book keeps you turning the pages and leaves you needing to know what happens next. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, I couldn't put it down.

Riasg has been exiled from the dark fae kingdom because of his drug abuse which is weakening his powers of magic.

In the land of humans, he meets Sgleo - a light fae from long ago who was ironbound and unable to return to the light fae realm. Riasg must help Sgleo in order to save himself.

Light and Dark combine.

Dark Fae Outcast by Autumn Birt is a Quick read! I love fae books! Little difficult in some names pronunciation, but I just did best I could! It was a great story and took me on a journey. The ending left open a great segway to the series coming! I am sure the series is going to be a fae-vorite!!!

An exceptionally good tale
“Dark Fae Outcast” is a slow-burn tale of redemption and acceptance. This is an unusually deep paranormal tale that you will think about long after finishing the story. This is an exceptional read that must be experienced. I highly recommend this tale.

I really enjoyed this book.

Riasg starts out as what easily could be considered a throwaway, actively trying to kill himself. But through a quirk of fate finds himself trying to save an old man and ending up saving himself.

The pacing is fast. This was probably about a two and a half hour read for me but it seemed much faster. There's a small cast of characters, but they are interesting and with this being the first book in a series, I suspect there's more to learn. This is a first book / novella, so don't expect things to be wrapped up at the end.

I was intrigued by the title so I wanted to give the book a go.
It kept mentioning ola but never really explained what it was, where it came from, the effects etc. I would have liked more information about it.
Its a short read so did not take long. I enjoyed it, I loved the idea of plastics and food affecting fae. This was a great concept and worked well.
I really liked the relationships and characters, I especially liked Bramble.
I would happily continue this series.
