Escape from . . . Hurricane Katrina

Rate this book
"A satisfying read." -- School Library Journal

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive storms in American history. In this fictional tale, daring twins Jo Jo and Sophie battle the raging floodwaters in a fight for their lives.

For twins Jo Jo and Sophie Dupre, Hurricane Katrina isn't the most important thing on their minds-not compared their mother's cancer treatments, Sophie's swim meet, and Jo Jo's upcoming coding competition. But when the storm intensifies and there's only one seat their aunt's car, Mom has to be the one to evacuate. The twins and their father are stuck at home in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans.

The winds rise-and with them, the waves. The levees break and floodwater rages through the city. During the chaos, Jo Jo and Sophie are swept away. Together, they must find their way to the Superdome, where their father should be waiting-but can they escape the wrath of one of the deadliest storms in history?

What a powerful story of courage, determination, resilience and family. I loved the presence and dignity the author gave the twin heroes, Sophie and Jo Jo, who had to weather the storm outside and the storm of having a mom battling cancer. Love shone in every part of their journey. Well done, Judy! Can't wait to read more books by you.

In ESCAPE FROM HURRICANE KATRINA, the terror and suspense and of surviving this historic storm is animated in the lives of Sophie, a talented swimmer, and Jojo, who loves coding. As the storm approaches, their mother leaves so that she can still receive treatments for cancer and the twins stay behind with their father. As the storm intensifies, they are separated from him, left on their own to navigate flood waters in a tiny raft to find their way to safety at the Superdome. During their ordeal they save lives and befriend a stranded little genius before reuniting with their father.

A valuable feature of ESCAPE FROM HURRICANE KATRINA is the rich background information that it provides. Chapter notes explain how tropical storms develop into hurricanes, why New Orleans flooded in spite of measures designed to prevent it, and why some people evacuated the city before the storm while others were left behind.

ESCAPE FROM HURRICANE KATRINA is an entertaining read and an excellent reference for understanding what happened when this historic storm hit New Orleans and how it affected the lives of ordinary people.

I was swept away with this story and the love, courage, and compassionate family who put others ahead of their own safety, even as they were trying to save themselves from the hurricane.

We all remember how terrible Hurricane Katrina was, but this story made me feel invested in a family who had other issues too, like a mom dealing with cancer and the sacrifices they made to get her to safety first. The twin tweens then had to deal with being separated from their dad, who stopped to help some neighbors. Thankfully, one of the twins, Sophie, was on a swim team, and was able to save a baby who was swept from it's mother's arms. They then used their other talents to reconnect with their Dad in the Astrodome in New Orleans.

We need more stories of everyday heroes of color. I look forward to reading more from this debut author.

Young readers will enjoy this fast-paced story of survival where twins use their talents/hobbies/skill sets to help each other and others survive the aftermath of a Category 5 hurricane and the subsequent failure of the levees. Despite separation from their mother, who is undergoing cancer treatments and evacuates without them, and their father who attempts to help their neighbors survive, the twins forge on through raging waters, the overcrowded and underprepared Superdome, hunger and dehydration, to ultimately triumph. What a fantastic story about the strength of family bonds and the kindness of neighbors helping neighbors!

EpicFest 2023 author. Escape From Hurricane Katrina really puts you in the middle of it and got tense! There's also "Reality Checks" (real facts) about the disaster at the end of every chapter and a timeline at the end of the book.

Using their swimming and coding skills, the two siblings not only find a way to save themselves, but others, too.
