In this sixth Henry Heckelbeck adventure, Henry might have found a dinosaur!
During a field trip, Henry Heckelbeck discovers a bone that might belong to a dinosaur! His friends don’t think it’s possible, but can Henry the Dinosaur Hunter prove them wrong?
With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, the Henry Heckelbeck chapter books are perfect for beginning readers.
I'm pretty "meh" about this series but the kids enjoy it well enough. My five-year-old has been wanting to look for dinosaur fossils and I thought this would be a fun book for him. I'm not sure about the ending. On the one hand, it is plausible and won't set kids up with an the expectation that they can find dinosaur bones in their hometown ... but I could also tell my son was kind of disappointed as the reader is somewhat misled and sometimes it's nice to read about something awesome that probably won't happen to you just so you can experience it vicariously.
My son loves this series and this is his favorite book so far! I thought that this was a really cute story about how Henry's wish kind of came true. I would recommend this series to young readers.
As a third grade teacher, I’m not sure why I don’t read more children’s chapter books because it’s definitely beneficial for me. While at my fiancé’s house, I happened to pick this book up because his niece was reading it and I was curious. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all that great.
I tend to think that a good children’s chapter book should teach some kind of lesson, highlight positive character traits, or at least just be genuinely fun to read.
The book begins with Henry looking for a shovel because he’s going on a field trip to a dig site, where he hopes to find dinosaur bones. From what I understand (having only read this book and not books 1–5), Henry owns a magical book and medallion that help grant his wishes. The magical book shares with him a spell and a “recipe” that turns his shovel magical so that it guides him to dinosaur bones. At the dig site, Henry’s classmates happily find various objects, while Henry becomes upset and pouty because he hasn’t found anything, especially not dinosaur bones. Eventually, his shovel begins digging on its own, and Henry pretends that he’s the one doing the work because he doesn’t want anyone to find out his shovel is magical, understandably. He ends up uncovering a large bone, supposedly from a T-rex. However, the bones come together into a small dinosaur from a “time period” Henry has never heard of, and it’s then shared that it isn’t a real dinosaur at all! Surprisingly, Henry doesn’t seem very upset by this, which felt unrealistic given how excited he was earlier to find a real dinosaur?
Overall, I wouldn’t describe the story as fun. While parts of it may be realistic, the story is kind of disappointing. Henry also comes across as a bit ungrateful and unwilling to put in effort unless magic is involved. The beginning was good though lol.

The fun continues as Henry's class heads for an archeological dig site in their town. He really wants to find a dinosaur bone so casts a spell to make his wish. Surprisingly, he does find a bone and it is part of a dinosaur. The class all get to excavate and find other pieces of this rather small t-rex. They are all surprised to discover what this dinosaur was when it is exhibited. I appreciate Heidi keeping her word to dress in a dinosaur costume and serve refreshments. Lots of lessons to think about in this volume.
