I honestly think this was my favorite volume I've read in this series!

So much intensity, yes, but it was different then anything else we've read before now. I will say I did NOT like the beginning though!! UGHHHHH! No, no I didn't because it just picked up where the other volume ended involving the dragons fighting one another, but SINHA!!! That stubbornness was PERFECTION!!!! I'm thankful that all of that definitely did NOT last long because I wouldn't have been able to handle it!!

King Kuelbo was awesome! It was so nice to have a "villain" that was on "equal ground" with Hak! Not in terms of fighting obviously (because #ThunderBeast LOL), but sort of in personalities and their banter with one another. I really enjoyed all their scenes together and especially loved the "ending" with Kuelbo! Despite how I felt about him in the previous volume, he's a good man. I wouldn't mind seeing him on page again at some point!

While Hak went far and above shining on page, Yona definitely did too! I DEEPLY love how these two encourage each other from afar and will say that near the end, it made this volume so very satisfying that I had to read it twice!

And our Xing friends! Man I love their characters! They were great! <3

This was such a wonderful volume! I'm not looking forward to seeing where things go because the battle is over and we know who is waiting for these awesome characters, but I'm thankful everyone is safe. (That hug in the beginning was SO special and got emotional looking at it. I love these characters! <3)

OH MY GOD. That kiss was fucking everything. Beautiful. Amazing. Stunning. I LOVE IT. And Sinha being a stubborn brat. I'm living!! I hope somebody takes out that stupid priest already. He needs to get choked out. I'm glad Yona kicked him in the face a couple of times at least.

“Live. Return home. But how? If only I were as strong as a host of men. No. I can surely still fight. The most powerful man alive granted me strength, and that remains in my hands.”

After the strife of the last couple of chapters it was nice having my soul returned to my body.

If the previous volume focus on Hak and his growth and struggles with the current situation, this volume was its mirror as it focus on Yona and her struggles and growth more. Both complimenting each other perfectly and squeezing my heart fiercely.

Yona's uncompromising nature and courageous soul raged brightly and gave me that little ray of sunshine even in the hardest of times.

While seeing Yona kick butt and take names was incredibly satisfactory the definite highlight was the moments shared with Hak, as it's always the case when those two share any time on screen together.

One of the best things about this series is that while it does take its time to build up a credible, strong, and absolutely romantic relationship between Hak and Yona it has never really dwadled for the sake of drama; and when things need to happen they happen and set my soul ablaze with the love and trust that shines so fiercely between them.

It was so achingly romantic and devastating all at once and I died a little bit inside with how much life it gave me.

“No. I will not be the goddess for a king who treats my friends as hostages. Even if I die.”

Resolutions needed to happen and they were so well develop and so in-brand with each and everyone of the characters that it was nothing short of perfect.

The thematics elements rage supreme even now, in the subtlests of ways, and carry on to form a strong foundation for the characters to continue moving forward. It might not have been directly spoken of, or drawn too much attention to them, but it is undubitable that they permeated the actions of our protagonists.

Ying Kuelbo ended up being a much more enjoyable character than I had expected originally and, surprisingly, I hate him a lot less than other characters closer to home. If nothing else, his motivations were sympathetic and reasonable and the hidden honor in them elevated him in my steem.

“If I don’t fight back, I’ll end up dead, or my friends will become someone’s tools. I must live, and return home.”

The battle between Kohka and the Touri Tribe of Kai rages on, with Hak leading a battalion and the dragons fighting against each other.

When I first started this arc, I wasn’t thrilled about its set up because, in general, I don’t like storylines involving kidnappings, but wow, this all just played out so incredibly. My initial impression of the battle between Kohka and the Touri Tribe was that Kohka was at a disadvantage, so it was incredibly gratifying to watch our heroes turn things around and see Kohka come out on top. I especially enjoyed Hak’s confrontation with Cuerbo, because it was not at all what I was expecting, though would this really be Yona of the Dawn without those comedic moments? But when Hak is fighting seriously he really does live up to his Dark Dragon nickname. As for the dragons, I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed watching Kija and Jaeha fight, but the real winner here was Shin-ah, refusing to hurt Zeno in any way. I didn’t realize just how stubborn Shin-ah is until this point. Seeing Shin-ah use his powers to save Yoon was also fantastic, as he uses them very sparingly. The castle takeover was especially fun, and we’re reminded that you can’t just force the dragons to do what you want, they’ll always have one thing they work towards, and it’s protecting Yona. And as for being in the castle, this really was the most epic of saving-the-princess-from-the-castle type scenarios. I love it when Kusanagi writes high stakes situations, and Hak was the ultimate knight in shining armour this time around. Every time Hak and Yona are apart, or even just the members of the HHB in general, their reunions almost, almost make it worth it.

Now on to the characters. I’m always really pleased when Kusagani adds another female character to the mix because she is so great at writing them. Cuerbo’s wife is a great addition to the cast, and I admire her resolve. Watching her team up with Yona was fantastic, and seeing the two work together was so empowering. Plus, I always love watching Yona’s battle skills in action, and I appreciate that she's not one to just sit around waiting to be rescued. As for Gobi, I really wish his character had been better fleshed out, he’s appeared in two arcs already so I feel like there should have been more backstory to him. I’m still really confused as to how he’s even managed to hire mercenaries given that he no longer has anything, and I still think he’s been the weakest villain of the series so far. And then there’s Hak. While he was absolutely incredible in this arc, this storyline also emphasized what I like least about him. My biggest qualm with Hak’s character is his lack of ambition. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting to live simply, and just wanting the people you love to be happy, but when it comes to Hak I feel like he has potential to do and be so much more. He’s one of the most incredible warriors of the series, yet he has no aspirations in that regard, which is fine, except that I lean more towards feeling like he enjoys fighting than not, so I feel like he’s not reaching his full potential and this arc really showcased what he could be. I’m really interested in seeing what Kusanagi has planned for his future, because I feel like he has potential to be so, so much more.

In regards to the romance, I was very pleasantly surprised to find myself rooting for Cuerbo and Yulan. I think Kusanagi’s great at writing compelling romances, and it almost makes me wish she’d include more of them in the story. And as for our main couple, well, I don’t know what to say except that that moment was a long time coming and I’m so pleased.

This volume was amazing beyond words. Probably my favorite of the entire series so far. The battle scenes were absolutely incredible, it was so intense I found myself just not breathing at times. The panels flow by so well, the action is crystal clear despite being so fast paced. Hak leading the troops was one of my favourite things, he is so military smart and such a great leader. The troops cheering for him as their hero afterwards was so well deserved.

The dragons love for each other (and for Yona) brought me to tears more than once. The way they're all ready to sacrifice themselves without any hesitation. It was just beautiful, how they do not just respect but love each other, Yona, and of course Hak and Yoon.

Yona is definitely my favorite protagonist of all times. She's so unbelievably strong and powerful, she never gives up, no matter how desperate the situation seems. It's no wonder the others trust her so wholeheartedly.

The scene in the castle was so intense I had to reread it a few times. I honestly was scared some characters would die at different points. And that one scene between Hak and Yona ? Will forever be engraved in my mind. Their relationship is definitely one of my favourites, and I just think the way it develops itself is so, so well written.

I'm so excited to see the outcomes of this fight. Hak and Yona being celebrated by the Fire Nation soldiers as heroes won't be taken well by Soowon & co, and I can't wait to see the political outcomes it will have on Kouka.

Ok, this volume was too short, and possibly certain parts of the arc were resolved too easily...

BUT.

There was this one thing that happened that made me forgive all that. 😊

AY!
