Tired of inadvertently killing people with her special ability Unluck, Fuuko Izumo sets out to end it all. But when she meets Andy, a man who longs for death but can’t die, she finds a reason to live—and he finds someone capable of giving him the death he’s been longing for.

All Fuuko wants is a passionate romance like the one in her favorite shojo manga. Unfortunately, her Unluck ability makes that impossible. But just as Fuuko hits rock bottom, Andy sweeps her off her feet—literally! Now she’s become Andy’s unwilling test subject as he works to find a way to trigger a stroke of Unluck big enough to kill him for good. However, when the pair discovers a secret organization is hunting them, it puts Andy’s burial plans on hold.

I've been on a personal manga odyssey, dipping in and out of the humongous manga range on offer, trying to find what I like and don't like.

And I've been pretty lucky so far, finding titles that are more or less nuts and/or fun, with some lovely artwork.

And then I hit this book. This one is not for me. The writing, the characters, the art, everything about Undead Unluck is certainly over the top and crazy, but it also as if it's actively screaming in your face. Non-stop.

It's not badly made, just agressively not for me.

A series that caught my eye with its colourful cover and unique concept, it never managed to live up to any kind of hype that I'd built up in my head. There are fun moments, and some of the more restrained gags land, but it could have been so much more entertaining had certain elements been left out. Gropey to the point where you can't overlook it, it's a fun premise that suffers from the somewhat unimaginative and overly sexual execution.

Reminded me of Fairy Tail, but on crack lol. This is a fun series. The magic system is really cool. Basically there are people who can negate certain rules of the world. For example, the main character Andy negates his own death, so whatever happens to his body he just comes back to life. Other abilities are also cool and I can't wait to see more. It is also quite humorous. Because Andy uses his body as a shield and as a weapon, most of the time he gets blown to pieces or some such and then regenerates but has to run around completely naked. I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because there were times when I was questioning Andy's behavior towards Fuuko, our female protagonist. I hope that aspect goes away, we'll see. Thank you to Edelweiss. + for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This review is a placeholder for volumes 1-6 of this series because I literally DEVOURED this series in less than a week. (And I would have read more if they’d had more published as of April 2022.)

Absolutely ridiculous concept? Yes

Crack!fic mixed with tropes? Yes

Is it now one of my favorites of all time? Yes

A note on the issue of sexualization mentioned in the other reviews: The weird sexualization/objectification element mentioned elsewheredid not bother me as much as others—cough cough, fan favorites like Black Bird and Soul Eater are SO MUCH WORSE—and the first volume is the only one that even has the gray areas in the first place, so in my opinion it’s not worth tanking the series over, but obviously a valid opinion for others. And at the very least, an FYI for new readers.

That is all. Very much looking forward to a (hopefully) very long series!

This first volume feels unsure if it wants to be a totally insane super hero romp, a sex farce, or a romantic love story. And while the tones clash fairly often, the set up (a man who can't die meets up with a woman whose touch and affection creates bad luck and causes others to die) and the quest (he wants her help so he can finally die) are strange enough that it makes the ride mostly worthwhile. Not as good as other over the top manga I've read this year, and the art is a little too exaggerated for my taste, but it was fun. We'll see where it goes.

Ughhhh this is good. A little disappointed in the reviews, yes yes your entitled to your own opinion BUT…ɪ ʟɪᴋᴇᴅ ɪᴛ sᴏ ᴡʜʏ ᴄᴀɴ’ᴛ ᴇᴠᴇʀʏᴏɴᴇ ᴇʟsᴇ ʟɪᴋᴇ ɪᴛ? (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃ oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The character design caught my eye and I just had to try it, it reminded me of my hero academy with a little more adult in it. That being said it’s not as lewd as you’re lead to believe it is in the beginning. The dude does end up get clothes doesn’t show his **** later on so honestly not bad lol and quite honestly the characters are all pretty likable.

primo volume molto interessante e promettente!

Maybe this is just not my kind of humor anymore.

I think in the past I may have been able to overlook the raunchier side because of a good story but this was just lacking in any kind of substance. The characters felt flat, the premise is vaguely interesting if you like the idea of having powers. It feels like a more adult My Hero Academia, trying to fit into the niche? I just feel like that kind of action is a little overdone for me at the moment. I am only keeping on with series like My Hero and One Punch because of the characters.

Characters really mean a lot to me when sticking to a series and I just find Andy and Fuuko forgettable. I will most likely not continue on with this series.

How funny you find this book depends on two very specific things: the amount of humor you gain from watching a naked undead guy use parts of his body as bullets and how entertaining you find him keeping a girl alive so that he can make her fall for him, have sex with her, and then use her "unluck" ability to die. Also a high tolerance for blood, sliced-up bodies, and references to suicide is recommended.

Interesting concept but the characters didn't really do much for me. It was fast paced and virtually all action which didn't allow for any character growth or world building. I may read the next volume to see if it goes anywhere more than just chop limb off, fight, regenerate, use unluck.

3.75/5 This is a nice easy read after reading Fire Punch and Berserk. I found it to be enjoyable easy read for the most part, especially the second half. Andy and Nico are definitely my favorite characters.

The worldbuilding is unique for the genre and definitely is the shining star of this series. The negator and uma/rule dynamic is incredibly fun to dive into and think about the possible consequences on a global scale. There are some incredibly cool scenes every time a character pops off with their abilities and I appreciate the stylization of their names.

Regarding the characters, half are completely forgettable and the other half are amazing - there’s really no in-between. Maybe this is a consequence of little variation in design?

The reason why this is not a 4 or a 5 is the plot. Most storylines are very simple or predictable which can take the wind out of the pacing which tends to be pretty breakneck. However, I do really like the first Autumn fight, Nico vs Language, and the choice to make Fuuko extremely capable in Loop 101. Loop 100 really suffers from a Fuuko who doesn’t feel like she’s earned her place yet in the reader’s eyes. It’s propped up hard by Andy and his dynamic with the whole group.

Also why did we need to do the stupid anime perv gags at the beginning????

Overall a good read, but not too deep. Just good world building brain candy.

Undead Unluck, Vol. 1 (My Kindle Review)

Izumo Fuuko is a young woman who lost her parents in a tragic plane crash and she’s had this strange belief that she’s unlucky due to others being mysteriously hurt whenever they’re near her. She also believes that it’s also the reason for her tomboyish looks and how she can’t find a boyfriend. But her latest unlucky day will change her life forever when she meets Andy, a half-dead tough guy who negated his death and thus begins a wild adventure with the unlikely duo as there’s up against others who see her unlucky powers as a threat.

Despite having a similar action feel to other manga, “UU” still brings a very thrilling and hilarious story with a unique “odd-couple” take. It certainly goes in many directions after the first chapter’s handful of pages and it doesn’t stop. Fuuko and Andy’s chemistry is definitely topsy-turvy as they couldn’t be more different, except when they’re in combat. For now, it’s swift in story as we also get some details of Andy’s backstory and leaving us wonder if there really could be a spot of romance with the two. A- (91%/Excellent)

I really enjoyed the anime, so I'm picking up the manga. Decided to start it from the beginning to see if the anime missed some details or if the manga explains some things more clearly. The start of the story has its flaws (mainly all the groping, but to be honest, it's all done with good humor, so it doesn't manage to bother me to a large extent), but I know further down the line the whole thing gets really good.

This has the potential to get pretty good, but the first volume was kind of lackluster. The characters are fine and the structure is kind of unique but nothing crazy special. The best thing so far is every now and then the art will pull out some crazy cool thing that I haven’t seen before so it definitely has promise, just finding its footing.

This book is all about Andy the Undead's quest to attain the glorious death with the assistance of "Unluck" Fuuko Izumo.

What a disappointing manga! It took me over three days to finish this crap! I hate these kind of books where women are treated as mere toys! It all felt like some lousy entertainment to me! It's grotesque and repulsive! Don't waste your time on this!

3.75 or so. I do not particularly enjoy the artwork for this one. But for sheer oddness’ sake, this is a rather well-crafted tale so far as I can tell. It definitely has a strange start, where it almost seems like the world of the story is at least fairly grounded in reality, special powers aside. It really hits its pace once characters start interacting with the greater issues of their reality, deleting concepts/laws of nature/natural phenomena left and right, and fighting (literally) god. It’s so strange and well put-together that I can’t help but be sucked in, in spite of my initial misgivings. I encourage you to push past the early stuff, as the author doesn’t really hit their pace ‘til later. If you still don’t like it once things start getting really wild, well, you tried.

The unluckiest girl in the world meets the guy who cannot die and wishes he could. Wacky, humorous, and just plain old strange. Sadly, it's so strange it's unbelievable. The premise sounded hilarious, but it fell flat for me to the point I couldn't finish it.

When I first decided to read Undead Unluck to 'catch up' to its weekly release, I hated it. Going by the average rating for volumes on Goodreads it was one of my lowest rated manga. But somewhere along the line I started to love it, and it really did become an incredible series near to my heart.

Unfortunately, volume 1 is bad. Chapter 1 is absolutely awful, and though there are moments in the volume that show promise I do hate a lot of it. At this point the series is 'grope this young girl so we can fuck and kill ourselves'. Grope her to activate her bad luck powers. Rub your hands across her to activate her bad look powers. Get her to rub her breasts against you to activate her bad luck powers. All the while the only other female character of note is also talking about being in love and how much shallow beauty matters and all that. And the plot is... kill the 'bad guy's' coworkers to join the bad guy?

Look, I've read this series to completion. I know what's actually going on. But it really doesn't show a whole lot of promise here. The best part is Fuuko's conversation with Gina, the quick world-building about how stars don't actually exist in this world?! The idea of what it means to change and to grow as a person. That's a great conversation and exactly what made me like Undead Unluck as the series went on. But this is one of those series I have to beg people to just... please give it a chance. I promise, it's really good- eventually. Take the first chapter with a grain of salt. Take the first volume with a grain of salt. Give it a bit more time, please.

This book was quite fun. We have two character Andy who cannot die aka undead and Fuuko Izumo aka unlucky who gives other bad luck and they die and now its upto them both and how they meet is the first part of the story and they learn negators are after them and there are 10 of them so if they defeat 2 they will get the seats in "THE UNION". They face Shen and lastly Gina aka Unchange and its so weird and fun and crazy and the things they do to defeat her is just crazy. Plus the grossed out blood and regeneration of Andy is so well done in the art. He is so OP and how he uses his body parts as weapons is like amazing!

I'd been planning on reading Undead Unluck for ages, as part of a desire to follow every series currently running in Weekly Shōnen Jump. It's taken me nearly three years since the manga began to finally start reading it, and it almost feels like I could have waited a little longer for the anime adaptation to come out first....

I have to say, this is not what I expected at all, though, in fairness, I didn't really have a preconception beyond assuming it was going to be a battle series - which it is. The characters we've met so far are "Negators," people who have the ability to negate a specific "rule" in nature. Lead male Andy has "Undead," which prevents him from being able to die, while lead female Fuuko has "Unluck," which grants fatal misfortune to anyone who touches her skin. The idea is not unlike JoJo Stands or One Piece Devil Fruits; it seems you can't choose what your power is, and must bullshit new ways to weaponize it. For example, Andy can regenerate from any damage, so he uses "Parts Bullet," wherein he cuts a part of his body almost all the way off, so an extra will regrow in the same spot, exploding the previous part off toward his foe. Andy spends much of this volume trying to figure out a way for Fuuko to weaponize her Unluck, including triggering an undersea volcano to hit an enemy jet.

Beyond battles, we have that tired trope of main characters trying to join the story's primary superpowered faction, reminiscent of Gon Freecss joining the Hunter Association or Kamado Tanjirou becoming a Demon Slayer. Andy and Fuuko aren't forced into an "exam arc" (or at least not yet?), and instead the manga "twists" the formula by making it so they have to kill two other members of The Union in order to take their places, as there are only ten spots - I guess making The Union an equivalent to the Gotei 13 of Bleach or Hashira of Kimetsu...?

The manga also follows a quasi-ecchi element, whereby Fuuko's most powerful Unluck effects so far have come from kissing people, from which leads Andy - who joins Fuuko because he believes her Unluck could help him finally die - to theorize a stronger effect would come from... taking Fuuko's virginity!? Fuuko says something about how she needs to like someone for the kiss to have full effect (her parents died because she hugged them, for example), which means Andy's mission is to make Fuuko fall in love with him (though it's possible this idea came up because the author realized the series could be easily solved with rape...). Fuuko can generate pretty strong Unluck effects by pressing her bare breasts against Andy's back, though we won't see what happens with that until next volume, I guess. Oh, and Andy is almost always naked, with a black rectangle censoring his penis and balls, so I guess there's some "balance" with fanservice? Regardless, despite the content the manga isn't remotely as sexy as e.g. Yuragi-sō no Yūna-san or Ayakashi Triangle, two more overt ecchi series that ran alongside UU at one time or another.

I feel this manga is creative enough so far to set itself apart from the generic Naruto or Bleach clones that often crop up in Jump these days, so I'm interested to see where it goes. Apparently it hasn't been doing well lately, despite greenlighting of the anime, and there's word that the series may come to a natural end soon regardless, so I guess it won't be too long a read?

I respect that Gina has stirrup thigh-highs, but I wish Tozuka-sensei was better at drawing feet to take better advantage of this clothing. At least her thighs are pretty good....

****

One thing I've been meaning to mention for contemporary Jump manga in general, but keep forgetting: VIZ has long since dropped that stylistic format it used on Jump localizations in the early '00s (and which it seems they keep doing with One Piece...), with the big volume number in the semi-circle, and the "Shonen Jump Manga" or "Shonen Jump Graphic Novel" above "Story & Art By" and the same font used for every author name. We're finally allowed to have volume covers more closely resembling the Japanese originals (though we occasionally get butchered logos *cough*Act-Age*cough*...).
