There’s a dramatic principle in storytelling called “Chekhov’s gun”.
The idea is that, if there’s a gun on the table or the wall–there usually is in Russian art–at some point the gun will be fired. A principle where only relevant elements of the story are included, everything else removed. “One must never place a loaded rifle on the stage if it isn’t going to go off,” Chekhov wrote in a letter. “It’s wrong to make promises you don’t mean to keep.”
Like any other principle in art, it’s up to the individual artist to choose whether they follow it or not. Sometimes some of the most wonderful details can be throwaways, but too many and a story can get bogged down.
I wonder how Chekhov would feel about his principle getting applied to “three-dicked demon”.
MADK 2 shows us a story that's more than what it seems.
Makoto is no longer a sweet looking highschooler, he has been working in Datenshou's brothel for 3 years and one day J requests his assistance for a new job. Makoto is both excited and terrified to see J again after so long. However, things go south for Makoto when the job entails reliving and destroying the last vestiges of his humanity for it triggers in him a deep hatred towards J that puts him in the brink of insanity. Situation that makes J nothing short of delighted since he is eager to be surpassed by Makoto.
This can only be achieved if Makoto finds out about J past and discovers his name. Which it's what this volume is about. In this journey, Makoto puts to use all the tricks he's learnt in the past 3 years and gets to meet characters from J's past that will either help him or hinder his mission to retrieve information about J's name and origin.
Unlike the first volume, there are only one implied sexual situation between Makoto and another demon, and a semi-graphic non-con one not involving Makoto, thus making this volume less erotic but way more gory, violent, with bits of dark humor. Also more focused on the world building of the demon's world. It's very interesting to see Makoto's progression to become a stronger demon, the shift in his actions and his expressions when showing malice is a terrifying sight (). The extent of his sadistic proclivities is yet to be seen.
The art falters here and there but there's many beautiful scenes. Also the new characters have a great design as always, .
Ps. Ryo went in depth in his Twitter about the history of various demon clans and their different notion of romance which explains Makoto's conflicted feelings and his dynamic with J. Which makes this story the most interesting yaoi manga out there.
*Original Review 10/17/2021* Got a lil confused at some parts but this is such an interesting story. I wonder how many more volumes it’s going to be. I can’t seem to find anything else online.
I cannot get over how beautiful and flowy the art style is. Absolutely gorgeous. I do kind of wish the story would go just a tad bit darker. It did seem like it was going there towards the end so that’s exciting. I feel like the humor interlaced is supposed to show the way demons interact and Mako’s deceitfulness though so that’s why the story isn’t as serious as it could be.
Anyway such a good series! Can’t wait to read more.
*Reread 4/28/2025* I honestly didn't really remember this volume at all and I think that has everything to do with me getting confused in some bits. I don't even know what confused me because I understood everything that was happening. There are some portions where things get chaotic and the art is a little hard to follow, but generally everything was easy to understand. I can also understand how this ended up only being 3 volumes, because you can feel it getting closer to the conclusion in this volume. Also past me?? "I wish it went darker" are you okay?? Like what else did I want??
Anyway, third book here I come. I'm excited to read the conclusion.
"you're a demon, aren't you? the hell do you mean it hurts?"
3.5 stars- Well, this is still very dark and it’s getting increasingly toxic. Makoto is no longer bothered by how his actions harm others and it’s interesting to see him losing his humanity.
CWs: gore/body horror, rape, cannibalism, torture, toxic relationship, vomit, murder, death of a parent
The character design is the one thing that I'm excited for here. I'm struggling with the story because I cannot begin to understand what the fuck is Makoto's deal, and it feels like he doesn't either. So I don't think I'll be trying to power through the last one, I chose my peace
Sometimes I think maybe I got to add trigger warnings to my reviews, not to warn y'all about triggers, but to show you just how fucked up my taste in books is
no mamen que hermoso que precioso que belleza. además que si le pones atención es una narrativa que te recompensa mucho diciéndote exactamente a donde va y juega contigo, ah que belleza leer esto.
This series truly is a delight. I can't believe I hadn't reread the second volume since I first picked it up in 2022. I think the main reason for that is that this series remains so incredibly vivid in my mind that it didn't feel necessary to return to it more frequently. I've truly held it as one of my favorite BL series for years, and it continues to be.
I'm glad I finally decided to do a reread, however, since it gives me a good opportunity to remind myself of why I adore it. The biggest reason is the absolutely toxic dynamic between Makoto and J.
The majority of this volume is spent with Makoto fiercely pursuing learning more about J's past all in an attempt to find a way to be able to defeat him...but the entire thing is based on his complex feelings for J. He both hates him and loves him and can't help but think about him all the time. This pursuit is so genuinely what drives him that literally three years have gone by since the story began, and it's still all he thinks about. I love it!
I must say that upon reread I genuinely hate J so much more than I did the first time around. He's such a despicable creature. The way he views and treats Makoto genuinely sickens me. We see his cruelty come to play in both subtle and obnoxious ways. In this volume in particular it comes out in the shape of having Makoto see his father again in order to collect his soul. It's all part of his twisted mindfuckery of Makoto because, naturally, Makoto was going to be affected by seeing his father again AND also realizing that in the human realm 30 years have passed since he died. What a fucking gift J gave him...to learn that all he knew in the human world will soon be gone and his father truly hated him until his very last breath. It's just more fodder for my J hate. Everything he does just seems so...disrespectful and rooted in wanting to humiliate those around him. I hate it.
None of this is to say that Makoto is some perfect angel, he genuinely isn't, but I still find myself inevitably rooting for him. J however? I can't stand at all. I wish nothing but the worst for him...even though in many ways it seems he wishes for the same for himself. Makoto is slowly turning into a cruel creature himself, razor-focused on his own ends with little regard to how it affects others, but I will continue to love him because I'm always going to be a sucker for a victim who turns villainous.
Finally, I absolutely loved what Kieran added to the story in this volume. His dynamic with J as his older brother was immaculate. It was clear how much it truly ate away at Kieran the fact that his younger brother was so much more easily beloved and desired, and he was always seen as lesser than. The way Makoto used him was truly artful, even if it made me sad considering how in many ways Kieran had a more gentle spirit than the other demons in hell...
All in all, this series truly is stunning. I adore everything about it.
original 2022 review: I really enjoyed this second volume in this series! Much less disturbing than the first one 😂
All in all, the main reason this didn’t get 5🌟is because the pacing was a bit too fast for me. Too much stuff happened in just one volume.
Regardless, this volume still made me swoon for the characters. I just love seeing Mako become darker and spiral more deeply into his desire for revenge. I don’t care if ultimately he destroys J or falls into deep maddening love with him. It will be a delightful time either way. On the other hand, Datensho wasn’t having a good time in this volume, but he’s so pretty. I’m obsessed with him. He’s weak for J, and I don’t blame him. I’m also weak for J. He’s terrible and aloof and beautiful and intriguing all at once. He can do it all. Who wouldn’t be easily entranced by him?
Anyway. I shall now join the ranks of those suffering as they wait for a third volume…
Makoto has been in hell for three years now and after the events of volume 1, I thought he was going to return to J's mansion, but, apparently, he decided to stay at Datensho's brothel. During that time he became a much sought after prostitute and, surprisingly, didn't see J at all. When he finally does see him again J has him do something so upsetting that Makoto decides that he now hates him and wants to destroy him.
Thus begins his search for information about J's past and ways in which he can destroy him. Along the way he meets J's brother and discovers who his mentor was. I can't say much more without giving away too much but the story definitely shows just how much Makoto has lost touch with his humanity. He is cold, calculating, and completely consumed by his desire to devour J. The way he treats those who helps him is appalling... and probably not surprising for a demon.
I'm eager to know what will happen between him and J because I honestly have no idea how things are going to play out. J is hard to read and I don't know how committed Makoto is to really destroying him. I think, in a twisted way, J and Makoto actually love each other but the way demons show affection to one another is completely different from how humans do it so I'm not sure what to think. On top of that, a demon who truly falls in love with someone usually ends up dying and according to the first volume Makoto lives on for centuries after these events so...?
As with the first volume the art style is gorgeous but there were far too many panels that were uninterpretable. I had no idea what I was looking at and in some cases couldn't make out a single thing. This was especially the case when J comes face to face with his brother and with Datensho after Makoto returned to the brothel at the end of the story. 3.5/5 rounded down
Hm, ok, ok, we are well into the plot now but... I'm not intrigued enough to continue on to volume 3 (unless someone dropped it in my lap and I was like, "oh! well, guess I'll read it while it's here in my lap!"). The art 7/10. The plot 6/10. The characters 5/10. All around average, not bad, but not intriguing enough to buy on my own and continue.
Less ero guro nansensu and more *sigh* plot. Three stars plus a star for Makoto dealing with family issues, minus a star for what happens to Datenshou, plus a star for K's unconventional anatomy. It's complicated.
A lot slower read for me, this one, than the former one that was in one sitting. However I think that says just as much about how it was a different kind of story and I wanted to sit with it as it does anything else.
It's been three years in hell since the end of the last graphic novel, but Makoto quickly learns time travels differently in the world he came from. 30 years has passed and he only finds out by coming face to face with his father once again. Orchestrated by J.
This, understandably, doesn't put Makato in the most complimentary mood where J's concerned and he sets off on a quest to find out his history and use it against him. Makato wants to ruin J, but I don't know that he realises just how far or fast he's descending into being a full demon in order to take that path. Many of the characters around him can't say his name before the end of this graphic novel which definitely makes for an interesting dynamic and power play.
Poor Datenshou doesn't do very well in this book by they time Makato returns from his quest and it's almost hard to see how little Makato or anyone cares. But totally in keeping with the genre of the series.
While we don't get as much of J in this collection, we do get some of his brother so J's not wholly absent, and obviously Makoto's whole journey is motivated by J, so his presence is still definitely felt. And what we do get of him is still very much fulfilling.
Content Warning: incest, adult/minor relationship, sexual assault, sexual content, rape, gore, body horror, assault, decapitation
Much like the first one, here are the content warnings that should've been included in the book. But furthermore, this plot is thickening and it's getting more juicy and interesting. I love seeing the world unfold. While some demon names are familiar, we're introduced to new demon-types and creatures, even the powers and abilities that are unique to those types. I like this series so far. K is a fun, new favorite character. I'm looking forward to the next book and dying to know what's up with M’s schemes.
surprisingly, this gets better??? (i meant the plot, not the appalling scenes, which get worse) i love the conflicting feelings of mako towards j, and how he manipulates the demons for his own bidding is just insanely good. his growth to become a demon is such a delight to read. i'm so looking forward to how the story will play out, what j's hidden intentions are (tho i can vaguely predict what they are), and witnessing mako just power play his way up to the demon rankings and destroy (?) j
I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first one, but that is typically the case with second books in Manga. This is the world-building portion of the book (and the world is fairly interesting and well-realized) but I do feel the pacing is moving much faster than the previous book. Still enjoyed the read and all the strangeness that is in this world! And the artwork as always remains fantastic!
It's really thrilling to see how Mako's story will continue and how he's going to uncover everything about J. Still, some aspects are a bit questionable, but I'm reading it for the plot twist because it's truly gripping.
It’s really interesting to see Makoto’s progress as a demon. He became even more powerful than D so quickly, so it’s only a matter or time until he surpasses J or W. The concept of love destroying someone in this is amazing and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
Book 2 and the same feelings as the first one. Some of the panels are so hard to understand what's happening, but the story is definitely progressing so I will finish Book 3.
