Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again—a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog! Years later, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
ADVENTURE IN THE LAND OF WANO
Luffy’s just landed in Wano and he’s already lost his crew! An isolated country of samurai with mysterious customs, Wano’s ruled over by Kaido, captain of the Beast Pirates, known as the strongest creature in the world. Naturally, Luffy picks a fight with him—but without his Straw Hat Crew to back him up, will the rubber wonder make it out alive?
Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

4.25/5 Our full crew have now arrived in Wano, a feudal-Japan-inspired island currently ruled over by a tyrannical shogun who is in turn the puppet of Kaido, an “emperor of the sea” (super powerful independent pirate) who can transform into a dragon. Samurai leader Kin’emon and Trafalgar Law have a plan to quietly infiltrate the country to take these two down. Bafflingly, however, this plan did not account for the inability of the Straw Hats (the “monster trio” in particular) to stand by even temporarily when witnessing an injustice, and therefore things start to go off-script basically immediately!
Wano intriguingly blends the Edo-era setting many manga/anime like to play with and with several sci-fi-ish premises. For one thing, much of the country – despite having provinces named after food (Udon=wheat noodles, Kuri=chestnut, Kibi=Millet, Ringo=Apple, Hakumai=White Rice) - is suffering from famine because Kaido’s weapons factories have poisoned the land and the water. Kaido’s army has also been enhanced by artificial devil fruits that give his followers beast powers…though some of them, like the guy whose half-hippo form involves him basically sitting in the hippo’s mouth, are kinda wonky! Also, it turns out that Kin’emon, Momonosuke, and several of the other characters have .
Luffy and Zoro sharing their Robin-Hood-style food heist with Otama
Back in Fishman Island, Luffy said that he didn’t want to be a hero because, if you’re a pirate and you find some meat, you get to just eat it yourself…but if you’re a hero you have to share! But, much as he feels constrained whenever someone else’s freedom is limited, the idea that someone is preventing other people from getting enough food IMMEDIATELY gets him angry. Feeding people is Sanji’s whole thing, of course, and seeing food be ruined or wasted always makes him very upset. As for Zoro…the culture of his home island is very similar to Wano, and so what seems to make him angriest is the lack of respect for the code of honor both places are supposed to share. Also, none of them like to see kids suffering! Therefore, it should have been surprising to no one that these three are the first to blow their cover and start getting into fights!
Since various circumstances, mainly Zoro’s ability to get lost in a paper bag, have so far delayed the reunion of Luffy’s “wings” post-Whole-Cake-Island, I’m eagerly awaiting that encounter! You just know there’s going to be bickering and drama, because neither of these lads is capable of just saying: “Hey, curly. Luffy told me what happened with your family. That’s messed up. I’m glad you’re OK.” Or “Wait, did you really think I would VOLUNTARILY leave the crew to marry some girl I’d never met? That kinda hurts, mosshead!” Little ‘Hot n Cold’ AMV that nicely sums up their relationship, whether you ship them or not!:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUXmJ...
Geisha “Orobi” eating soba from “Sangoro’s” stand with their other crewmates
We also get some other fun character moments for our crew, with Nami sneaking through the rafters with an older female ninja, Shinobu, and Robin just being SUCH an over-achiever in her undercover mission as a geisha: “I feel miserable. The only information I could glean was Orochi’s waking time on the day of the big battle, the contents of the offerings the shogun’s procession will take to Onigashima, the feast time, Kaido’s favorite food, his crew’s hierarchy, the number of their men and weapons…” Also there’s the bit where Sanji is shirtless and yelling at Luffy: “WE WENT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA TO LOOK FOR YOU!!”…because Luffy dropped his vivre card in the water, and Sanji ended up diving in to try and rescue him, just like in their early East Blue adventures!
There’s a lot of other setup going on for the rest of the arc, including Chopper having to babysit a who has amnesia, the reveal that , and the introduction of Kaido’s island of Onigashima. The latter is particularly fun, because (as pointed out in the Q&A way back in omnibus 26) that’s the name of the ogre island in the legend of Momotaro…and the son of the beloved shogun Oden who the Straw Hats are currently protecting is called Momonosuke! Sanji makes his first uses of the raid suit: Germa technology from the birth family he has otherwise rejected. The introduction of it is a mix of cool, funny, and cringe, given that and - but that choice to use it will also have serious consequences later! There’s also a prophecy that fits in well with the recurring Luffy sun imagery: “Standing before his burning castle in her dying moments 20 years ago, Oden’s wife spoke thus: ‘You are the moon unaware of the dawn. May your purpose be fulfilled and cast nine shadows on the night woven of 20 years. And you shall know the brilliance of the dawn.’”
Sanji’s raid suit transformation in progress. Clearly Franky and Usopp are magical girl fans!
My “queerness in One Piece” segment will be making a reappearance soon, as we just met our first new trans character for this arc…but, unlike some of the previous queer characters I’ve discussed, it isn’t at all obvious at this point. “Urashima: Silence, commoners! From the perspective of the warrior class, you’re ALL chattel! Whether any of you live or die is up to me! So c’mon Okiku! Come and be mine now! Okiku: This one knows of no person named CHATTEL. (shwing of katana, slicing off his topknot). Surely you jest. It is your heart that is truly low. Luffy: THAT WAS SWEET! Man, Kiku is awesome!” I concur with Luffy, so we’ll come back to her, I promise…maybe after we also meet !
Also arguably in this category: Hiyori is clearly already very into how strong Zoro is, but, um…ma’am, based on all evidence to date, this guy might be less romantically interested in women than Luffy is, if that’s even possible! “Zoro: (Woken up by Brook, realizes Hiyori – the courtesan everyone swoons over - was sharing his sleeping mat) Brook: I’m quite jealous, Zoro! Zoro (grumpily): We were just sleeping. Hiyori (coyly): I’m so sorry! It was cold inside – But everyone gets besotted by the thought of sleeping next to me! Was that exciting for you? Zoro: (Facial expression: God, this lady is annoying!) You can put a positive spin on anything, can’t you?”
Clinging onto his wounded arm doesn’t exactly help matters!
Okay, so far the Wano arc didn't exactly live up to my expectations. It had some good moments in these three volumes but I might have expected too much from it since all websites rank it as one of the top 3 One Piece volumes.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad arc. It has some amazing moments that I will talk about more in the spoiler section of the review but I don't know, I guess my hype for it is just not on the same level as Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island.
Still, I did enjoy it and thus I'm giving these volumes 4 stars. Especially thanks to the moments we get from Zoro, Sanji and Luffy.
There will be SPOILERS from here on!
Okay, we gotta talk about Zoro because wow... what a character development. My dude actually touched a woman. Okay but seriously, is it just me or is Zoro completely incompetent of treating a woman with respect. Maybe that's an exaggeration but that beautiful geisha woman whose name I can't remember is all over him and he just stands there like "Imma head out now"... I think he needs Sanji to step in and be jealous to actually see the opportunity here. Also I have to say that I love how his annoyance with people's laughter isn't played for comedy but actually serves as something emotional. And there is also something that I probably should have mentioned a while ago. Zoro's oni giri attack. Sorry, I just can't with the name.
Okay maybe we should move on to Luffy now. Because some idiot left him alone with Zoro at the beginning and expected them not to make a fuss (I'm looking at you Law who were supposed to be the responsible one). Also Luffy is just very funny here. I love how he randomly attacks Kaido and then loses because yeah, how did he not expect that. But because of that we get Luffy interacting with Kidd and can I just say that these guys give off the exact same chaotic vibe (Luffy is just a bit more childish). Their arguing is just on another level, I swear.
Speaking of Kid... I love this man. Why? I don't know but I just do. So he lost an arm and I don't know when that happened but at least he can bond with Shanks over it if they ever meet. And my man broke out of jail so good for him I guess.
And then we have Sanji... my guys... Sanji officially became the yellow power ranger. Let's applaud him for that. Unfortunately, he does not call himself the yellow power ranger but Soba Mask which is a lame-ass name (why did everyone let him keep it). But yeah, Sanji is keeps being cool even in Wano where he's not the center of attention.
Series: One Piece #91-93 Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
This volume basically begins the Wano story. Luffy lands on Wano and instantly starts causing havoc by fighting Kaido’s men, stealing food for the starving people of Wano, and fighting a drunk Kaido. This volume ends with Luffy in prison with Eustace Kid and other members of the rebellion and an execution.
I am really enjoying revisiting the beginning of the Wano story because I feel like so much has happened and it's been so long since the Wano arc started in the anime, I have forgotten a lot of these early scenes. I can’t wait to see what else I have forgotten as the Wano story plays out.
I’m just sitting here crying at 11 o’clock at night thinking about how maybe I don’t need to get any sleep before work tomorrow. Maybe instead I should just start the next volume.
(Side note… if I was ever going to take points away from OP, it would be for the continual ramping up of Sanji’s “pervert flaw.” It’s like the more powerful he gets and the more actual good character development he gets… the more he strays away from being a “lover of woman” and toward just being a straight up sexual predator. Can we please just chill out with this?)
Very interesting, strong volume with a few things that hold it back - between Oda's pervert side going all in, and so many coincidences in the plot where it starts to feel like almost a Deus Ex Machina. However, everything outside of those two points is pure gold, both from an action and story point of view.
I fear Oda might be soreading the story and characters a bit too thin once again, but at least on the last arc he worked well around that in a good way, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt this once.
The story of Wano and the efforts of the Straw Hats to take down Kaido. With Luffy's arrival on the island and immediatley finds the problems facing the populous. The more interesting aspect comes wiht seeing how teh Straw Hats have to work behind the scenes to prepare for the rebellion and uprising needed to take down Kaido.
My reread of Wano has been slow. It's One Piece so it's great. But I felt like despite having all the material in front of me, it was still a slog. Act 2 definitely slows me down for sure.
Com esse Omnibus, fecho One Piece por esse ano. Creio que avancei bastante. Ano que vem chego aos capítulos atuais e estarei na mesma que todo mundo que acompanha, hehehe
