Rate this book
In Taisho-era Japan, kindhearted Tanjiro Kamado makes a living selling charcoal. But his peaceful life is shattered when a demon slaughters his entire family. His little sister Nezuko is the only survivor, but she has been transformed into a demon herself! Tanjiro sets out on a dangerous journey to find a way to return his sister to normal and destroy the demon who ruined his life.

After centuries of preparation and training, the Demon Slayer Corps has come face-to-face with their nemesis, Muzan Kibutsuji. It is a desperate battle and several Demon Slayers have already been killed. Tanjiro himself has engaged Muzan, and, despite giving it everything he has, is taken out of the fight! Although severely injured and near death, he sees a vision of his ancestor that may hold the key to finally destroying Muzan! Can Tanjiro recover enough strength to fight Muzan to the finish?

Jesus Christ I can't even remember the last Shonen manga I read that I felt such desperation for the main characters.

Muzan unleashes all hell as he goes against all the remaining Demon Slayer members. This time though he's not holding back and quickly begins to dispatch them one by one. This lets Iguro really shine and get a backstory. Never knew or cared about snakeboy but goddamn if his backstory wasn't touching and fucked up. This lets me really root for him because he is sent through the goddamn ringer here and it basically is him and Tanjiro going face to fact with Muzan.

This is so close to the end it is making me so anxious. I love the stakes, the battle, the heart, and passion in this fight. When this is animated it is going to be hailed as one of the greatest fights of all time.

A 5 out of 5.

This was a great volume as we have the Hashiras fighting Muzan and its bloody brilliant, they are trying everything, every combo and what not you can think of until other demon slayers also come in and help them and they have to hold them till its dawn but will they last that long because Muzan is much more powerful than them and then finally we see Tanjiro come in for the rescue, he figured out the 13th form and remembers the flashback of Yoriichi and its so good and the final battle begins! Meanwhile Nezuko..!!

This volume was so good and is fast paced and mostly deals with the fight scenes and showing every option DSC used to defeat Muzan but will he go down so easily? What else will they have to do? And what exactly is the last form? It answers all this and so much more and some scenes focusing on the Hashira are amazing. The art is brilliant, each fight scene so detailed its like watching an anime and words wont be enough to praise this volume!

Wow, the desperation and determination displayed in this volume was insane! No joke, I could feel the desperation and anxiety the Hashira and the others were feeling during this fight. Watching everyone struggle to keep Muzan occupied until dawn was interesting because it reminded me of that phrase, "throwing things at a wall until something sticks". Everyone is trying every tactic, every technique, trying to find any advantage to prolong the fight and I could feel their desperation, exhaustion, hopelessness, and determination. Because even when things kept getting worse, they never gave up; they just tried something, anything to keep moving. And I fucking love that.

Iguro got to be center stage this volume and while it's sad that his backstory wasn't given until now (you know, ONE VOLUME BEFORE THE SERIES ENDS), it was truly haunting and fit the theme of family either being an inspiration or a curse. And HOLY SHIT, was Iguro's family a curse! That scene with him and the snake demon made me nearly throw up. It also makes sense why he loves Kanroji so much (not that you need a reason, she's amazing) but it was sweet seeing him try to protect her as best he can. Also, him teaming up with Tanjiro near the end was great.

But most importantly of all, Tamayo and Shinobu are officially the MVPs of this fight because those ladies fucked up Muzan before the real fight even started! Seriously, I don't care what anyone says, NONE of the Hashira OR Tanjiro would be able to stand to Muzan if Tamayo and Shinobu hadn't created the toxic concoction for him. They deserve all the credit for making this fight possible from the start and I love them both!

That's all I've got for now. One more volume, the end is near!

TW// murder (including of children, siblings), animal cruelty/violence

This was a super fast paced volume that continued the fight with Muzan. I’m really glad that some of the less popular hashira like Obanai and Gyomei are getting there chance to shine in this fight.

There’s a lot that still needs to happen in the final volume. I’ve seen spoilers for four character deaths that have not happened yet, so I’m a little anxious to see how everything will play out in volume twenty three.

I am gobsmacked. The way every single detail has a purpose, the urgency, and the constant heartbreaking sadness.... The fact that we have been going at an 11 for the past 8 volumes or so and this series STILL has heart, twists, reveals, and manages somehow to take it up another notch?!

This has definitely been one of the most intense and extreme final acts that I’ve read so far in manga. I can’t believe there’s only one volume left, I don’t want it to end !!

Note: Whilst the volume isn't officially out, all chapters have been released. I'm approximating 9 chapters (188-196) based on previous volumes.

This volume continues with the all-out battle against the "big bad", bringing out some characters that have been awol for a while and throwing everything the good guys have [and more] against their foe.

They definitely seem to be making progress, but considering some of the things that have happened here it's very clear that they are not out of the woods yet and there's still a ways to go...

Chapter notes below for personal reference: (potentially spoiler heavy)

Normally I don't just reread volumes out of order, but this morning on Twitter I saw somebody talking about how much they liked final battles where the villain completely outclasses the heroes, and the entire fight is a struggle, and they don't beat the villain because they got a random power up or because they are stronger than the villain, but because they worked together and were just able to overpower the villain with numbers and teamwork. And they used Sunrise Countdown as an example, so I immediately was overcome with the desire to reread the Sunrise Countdown arc, and so with the power of the Shonen Jump app, I have reread the last two and a half volumes of Demon Slayer. When this arc gets animated (maybe as a movie? 👀) It'll be a cultural reset.

Everyone died!!! Oh wait, no they are fine!!! No some of them are dead again, dead dead, I guess.
The low level Demon Slayer cops members are now down to crowd control trying to keep lookie loos from getting closer to the human eating demon. Oh, more flashbacks and Tanjiro learned something cool, but he can't get it just right and end the fight. Well at least Tanjiro is in the fight (again) but the others from vol 1 & 2 did not last long if they live at all. The art is blurring (sloppy even) and it is hard to tell if that is Tanjiro or someone we thought dead. 3 stars maybe 3.5 rounded up.

Only one more volume to go...

I know I keep saying this, but this final battle — lasting many volumes — is truly stunning.

The level of characterizations, the investment, the awesome art and battles — all of it is paying off now.

So good.
