Delay Ageing: Healthy to 100

Rate this book
What if getting older didn’t mean getting ill? Most people accept that growing older means suffering illness – less energy, a risk of cardiovascular disease, brain disorders, cancer, aching joints and increasing frailty. Most people shrug and “It’s just the way life is”. Now we know that most people are wrong. Researchers on ageing, based in the world’s leading universities and medical schools, confirm that we are now entering an unprecedented era for healthy ageing. One that promises significant increases in human health span – by preventing, delaying or in some cases even reversing, the drivers of ageing. Author Colin Rose is a Senior Associate of the Royal Society of Medicine and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts who has written on health, nutrition and science for over 30 years. Delay Ageing, written for a general audience, reveals and explains the latest research • The 10 fundamental causes of ageing and how each one can be countered. • How to turn on genes that repair damaged DNA. • How immune systems can be strengthened to fight disease – whatever your age. • How to protect your brain as you get older. • How to lower both blood pressure and blood sugar levels – key threats to longevity. • How your microbiome affects ageing – and how to ensure a healthy gut. • How to disconnect biological from chronological ageing. Ageing is essentially the accumulation of damage – damage to cells, to mitochondria, to DNA, to stem cells, to essential communication between cells - including brain cells - and to the immune system. When we are younger, that damage still occurs, but our repair mechanisms are good enough to restore us to health. But as we age those repair mechanisms begin to falter. Delay Ageing shows how you can boost your natural repair mechanisms - and proves that you can slow the rate at which you age. And, therefore, cut your risk of ‘age-related’ illness - to extend the years when you live physically fit, mentally sharp, and happily active. Delay Ageing culminates in eight practical age-delaying actions that can easily be incorporated into any lifestyle. They are natural, non-drug, solutions you can start tomorrow. An inspiring blue-print on how to live better, longer.

Great read

I don’t write reviews often but felt compelled to by this book. This is a great read with all the concepts backed by current scientific literature. The book is well structured by giving you some background into what causes ageing and then follows up with steps that can be implemented in your lifestyle to limit the effects of ageing. This is all backed up by the literature which is reassuring. I have a scientific background so I found it easier to follow information from the studies linked to the advice. There was a section in the final third of the book explaining the different types of studies in the medical field to give an indication on what each of those mean (and why we often get contradictory advise in the media). My only minor point here is that it may have been better to explain some of these types of studies closer to the start of the book for the lay person. However, that’s a really minor point.

The actual advice on how to change lifestyle choices to implement concepts found in the research is fairly straightforward and easy to implement. A lot of it is probably familiar to many, e.g. eat plant based foods, have daily exercise regimes, try to manage stress levels (some is good excess is bad), intermittent fasting etc. However, why you should do these things and how they contribute to reduce the effects of ageing in the body is explained.

Also, different ways that these can be implemented in your daily routine are explained. This is the crucial part, as the advice is all fairly easy to add into your routine, which is essential as it has to become a lifestyle change, there are no quick fixes. There are lots of suggestions of the different foods to eat for example and the types of exercise to focus on to make a difference. I have started to try and implement the changes suggested in my own lifestyle in the past few weeks and it has not been too difficult. It is probably too early to notice too much of a change in health etc but I have noticed that my energy levels feel more steady through the day. I have noticed that I’m less tired in the afternoon and I get up easier in the morning now too.

The bottom line is that this is a great, up-to-date book on what we currently know about ageing and how we can make reasonable changes to lifestyle choices to increase longevity (i.e., remaining healthier for longer).

After experiencing a health crisis and seeking medical intervention, my next refuge was in the pages of "Delaying Aging: A Life-Waking Experience." This insightful book came highly recommended by an 88-year-old yoga teacher who still conquers the slopes annually. A true blessing to read, this book is filled with countless takeaways that resonate deeply.

In a world where we battle against toxic materials, GMOs, environmental pollution, stress, and heightened levels of radiation, it's astonishing to discover that we can still strive for vibrant health and longevity. "Delaying Aging" offers a glimpse into the possibility of extending our time on this earth, allowing us to cherish more moments with our loved ones. Truly a brilliant and enlightening read! 🩺♥️📗
