Enter a Venice filled with bright magic, dark secrets, and a romance for the ages.

On the streets of Venice, magic burns and wars wage, while powerful illusions and mind-bending magic keep the world of The Skilled hidden from ordinary people—or typics. The powerful Mardova Family rules Venice with an iron fist, keeping their powers secret and their eyes on their enemies.

Zan Mardova would rather use his magical Skills to do tricks on his motorcycle or fly over buildings than involve himself in Family politics, but when he discovers a rival Family has brainwashed a beautiful typic girl named Ellie, he begins to unravel a web of dangerous secrets with Ellie at the center. Zan’s loyalty has always been to the Mardovas and the fate of Venice, but as Zan’s feelings for Ellie grow, he can no longer ignore his suspicions about members of his own Family.

Zan fears there’s a traitor among the Mardovas—and it might be him.

Good book. Took me a little to get into. For some reason, stories like these, set in our world (kinda) but still fantastical don't grab my attention that quickly.
That being said, you can see light Sanderson-influences in this work, especially nearing the end. This is, in my opinion, a good thing. The final 60 pages or so when things started to really go down, i was hooked.
The ending, not to spoil, was very good.
Closing up story ties, while opening new roads for further exploration in later books.
Teetering toward 5, but still a 4.

I'll very probably will be reading the rest of this trilogy too.

“Sinking City” marks the start to the new Urban Fantasy “The Skilled” Series, by Janci Patterson and Megan Walker. The story takes place contemporary Venice, where an underground magical society, composed of powerful families that wage magic wars while keeping the normal human population none the wiser. The most powerful family; the Mardovas, rules the city with an iron hand, exercising total control over her enemies and keeping all magic secret deeply buried.

Zan Mardova (MC) has never showed any interesting in the family politics, he rather prefers to enjoy the adrenaline rush on, racing his motorcycle, but everything changes when he meets Ellie, a normal girl that has become the center of a rival family conspiracy. Zan struggles between his wishes to stay apart and his growing attraction to Ellie, the later wins. In his effort to help Ellie Zan discovers some hidden and dark truths about his own family, that will force him to rethink his loyalties.

Patterson’s & Walker story is compelling and inspiring, fast-paced with a balanced mix of action, romance, and description elements, that make the world of the skilling come alive in every page, making Venice another main character in the action. The characters are relatable, credible and multidimensional, Zan is a an interesting male MC (very welcome in a genre mostly populated by FMC), that despite his pragmatic approach to the case, is a nice, relatable human being dealing with his own life in the best possible way, until he realizes that in the world of the Skilled, neutrality isn’t really an option. An unputdownable story and a great start to a new series.

It was a fine book. Reminiscent of Twilight but without some of the cringiest parts of that series. The setting in Venice was cool, and I liked both Zan and Ellie. The worldbuilding was decent, and the whole magic Mob family vibe was cool. Again, the rating may be a little inflated since I read it so fast (about 3 days), but it did keep me entertained.

A decent YA urban fantasy

I decided to read Sinking City because I had heard Brandon Sanderson’s praise of Janci Patterson, and saw the cover quote. As a Kindle Unlimited member, it was a free read, so deciding to read it was an easy choice. Overall, it was a fairly light and quick read.

I don’t think anything in the book necessarily blew me away, but I don’t think there was anything bad either. The book moved fast while also feeling like you got to know the characters.

I typically read YA as a palate cleanser between thick nonfiction and thick epic fantasy books. And for that purpose, this book did the trick.

This read was a quick, fun, lighthearted romp through the streets of Northern Italy. The descriptions of the backdrop alone made me yearn to visit... wade knee deep in canal water, walk its historic streets... gawk at its renowned architecture, be paddled around the canals in the world famous gondolas, eat my fill at a Saint's festival and drink coffee at a street Cafe with a flirty companion. The world building was great... probably the best part of the book... well, that and the pacing. Things never felt stagnant nor sluggish which kept the story rolling along... steamrolling over its rough spots like the Character Development.

The cast was decent, although each persona could have seriously benefited from some extra character boosting oomph... a good bout of TLC. The MCs were difficult to get behind, possibly due to an unfortunate lack of dimension.

Oh, and then there was the predictable insta-love. This is usually a HUGE No Go for me. Sometimes... rarely... an author can manage to make an insta-love work but that was not the case here. Here it was shameless, unapologetic and extremely off-putting.

Overall:

This was a quick jaunt through Venice Italy... an undeniably gorgeous setting. I tore through this predictable (semi) guilty pleasure and that is the best I can say about it. The premise of magical mobsters with a multitude of powers but only 1 dominant gift was really promising. Unfortunately, Sinking City spent so much time on the freaking insta-love that it never really (truly) came into its own as a well rounded Fantasy. It was a good distraction for a little while but not an adventure I'll be looking to continue.

I picked this up because Brandon Sanderson gave it such a strong endorsement, and I've liked some of his books before. It certainly didn't live up to the endorsement ("you must move it to the top of your TBR list now!"), but it wasn't bad. There were moments I considered not finishing it though.

The story bounces back and forth between Zan and Ellie as point of view characters, in a fantastical world that reminded me intensely of whatever Twilight book it was that took place in Italy (since this takes place in Venice). They even reference Twilight at one point, I think. Zan and his clan are "skilled," or have supernatural magical powers, and (like every story of the type) they keep their kind hidden from "typics," or those who lack such powers.

Ellie is a typic, but she's one in which the mafia-esque "skilled" families are intensely interested, for reasons that become clear as the story goes on. Zan is following her because of this, but as soon as they meet, sparks fly. I wasn't really feeling the love story this time... I don't know why. Maybe it just felt too stereotypical, and I didn't really connect to any of the characters, for some reason I can't identify.

The action was well-written. I don't think I'll be reading on in the series, though.

“Protect the girl. Otherwise, the destruction of the Mardovas will be only the beginning.”

Enter a magical version of Venice with Zan Mardova; a Skilled and son of the Head of the Council. He has visions of a girl, a typic and the stage is set for intrigue, magic and family revelations.

This was a brilliant book, perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters and Harry Potter. Vividly written description and matching dialog that transported the reader to magical Venice.

I cannot wait to read the next books in the series.

This book was a quick read and I did finish it.

The characters in this book weren't really relatable to me. They acted in ways that I did not find likely, and the character growth they went through seemed forced.

The plot was interesting and I appreciated the idea that the powers were genetic, but the disparity between the 'typics' and the 5% gifted with supernatural powers wasn't really explained, nor was the 'changeling' aspect which seemed more a plot device than a likely outcome.

The world was supposed to be modern with a twist and seemed well constructed.

This book wasn't bad, but I wouldn't consider it to be really good. I just felt like it could be better. It has so much potential! Yet, I don't think we really spent the time that we needed to on developing characters and their relationships. You could see that there was potential for depth, we just never reached it. So, by the end of the story I felt like I should be surprised or hurt by things that happen to certain characters, and yet I didn't feel any remorse because I didn't have the opportunity to connect with them. So, it wasn't a bad book, it could have been a lot better

Consider this a fun trip through magical Italy. Walker and Patterson clearly did their research and, as a consequence, the setting felt very realistic. Building on that, the magic system is fun and although the romance was an integral part of the story, it wasn't everything. The story on its own (and the outstanding mysteries) were solid and enjoyable.

A Thrilling Read

Magic abounds in one of the most magical cities in the world: Venice. In Sinking City, Elle and Zan fight to save their families and keep unbridled power from those who would use it to kill-- all while falling into a love that is forbidden. Fast pacing and a unique story all set amongst the backdrop of Venice make Sinking City a book you can't put down.

While romantasy is not my go-to genre, Megan and Janci are wonderful people and make a great writing pair. This was a fun, well written book and I'll be picking up the next one when I see them at December's Dragonsteel Nexus Convention =]

I got an Arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Review: 4,5/5 stars

Synopsis:
Ellie has moved with her family and now lives close to Venice. When exploring said city with her brother, she runs into Zan and his friends, who seem a little bit odd to her. Soon, she finds out about fighting families and magic and that she is at the core of their conflict.

I´ll be honest, the beginning of it all reminded me a bit of The Mortal Instruments, of Clary and Jace and so on. That changed, though, so no worries if you weren’t the biggest fan of that particular series!
There are many twists, there’s lots of love and betrayal and murder, and you’ll definitely be asking yourself whom you can trust.

Ellie really grew on me, with her newfound courage and determination- Her and Benji were really cute siblings too! Zan grew on me as well, kinda surprisingly, since he sometimes made questionable decisions in the beginning. But it was nice (and sad) to see him grow.
The villains are nicely done as well. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was how everyone blamed Zan for the actions of someone else. Like, they’re acting independently, it’s not his fault!

Anyway, I loved the setting in Venice, which was refreshing after all the European-medieval-inspired high fantasy I read. The Skilled with their magical system worked nicely, I especially loved the clear limits their talents had and how the consequences were presented. I didn’t like how they talked about Typics (Normal people) and how easily they manipulated them, though. But it kinda fit into the world.

The writing was lovely. I could sympathise with the characters, felt their fear and the sometimes dark atmosphere. Zan and Ellie definitely had distinct voices to me, too.

So, if you’re looking for a magical YA-book set in Venice, then this is for you! Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions, though.

Thank you to the authors for a copy. All opinions are my own!

This was unfortunately disappointing. Urban fantasy is a tough genre for me to get into, and that how it felt here too. I do think a younger audience would be more into some of the tropes/story lines than I was though.

Insta-romance abounded for these two teens. There was one cute date, and then BAM. Couldn’t be without each other. It wasn’t that Zan and Ellie didn’t have chemistry, I just wanted more of a build-up with them, a little more angst. So much was trying to happen at once that this story line fell to the side and then felt disjointed.

There’s a lot of action! Sinking City keeps you busy. The nature behind the magic system was interesting and I appreciated that it seemed to have clear definitions on what could/could not be accomplished. It always seems more ridiculous when magic doesn’t have boundaries so I’m glad they were present here. The Italian setting was nice too. It was a nice wanderlust adventure around the cities.

I liked Zan as a main character. I think he holds a lot of promise for the next book in growth and coming into his power. Ellie, on the other hand, needs to drop the damsel in distress vibes. There were many times she admitted it as well and I get annoyed when a character can’t take care of themselves (I’m cool with them learning/growing into it, but this was a continual issue).

Overall audience notes:
- YA Urban Fantasy
- Language: a little; light
- Romance: Kisses
- Violence: murder, magical attacks, physical altercations, guns
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of a loved one

Sinking City reminded me of a mash up between Shadowhunters and the Volturi from Twilight (hold on before you judge that... just talking about the structure of magical Italian politics). It's one of those YA stories that has action from sentence one straight through to the last page. Set in Venice you have all of the beautiful ambience of the ancient city with the tradition and politics of a magical Mafia.

Zan is our main male character who is the son of one of the Capo's and is like most teen sons, not quite what his father envisions. The family is what's called in this world, Skilled, which means they have varied magical powers with a history that stems all the way back to Galileo. When an American family moves into town, Zan finds himself drawn to the daughter, Ellie, who is just your average girl. This is frowned upon, queue your forbidden romance. Interestingly, the more time they spend together, the more forbidden the romance becomes because she finds herself embroiled in the brewing magical tensions between Zan's family and their rivals.

I really enjoyed the world building and the interesting way magic manifested in this world, although there were a few times where I felt it was convenient they happened to have a certain power at a certain time. There is also insta-love which is not my favorite but they acted appropriately for teenagers so the steam was at a perfect level for me. There's lots of intrigue and betrayal and I appreciated that there was a clear ending even though this is a series. I'm looking forward to checking out the next installment.

Thanks so much to the authors for providing me a copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
