“Please Lord, don’t let my daughter see me die today.” ~ Elizabeth ClarkBeth Clark lives of the edge of an abyss. Everyday is spent fighting for her survival and the survival of her teen daughter, Genny. Their lives have been shattered by a vaccine that was supposed to have been a modern miracle. A vaccine that is turning the living into monstrosities of their former selves. Now, only remnants remain of their past lives. Mother and daughter will struggle to survive with what this new world holds for them as they discover the dawning of the Risen.
Marie F Crow believes that monsters should keep you up at night with the thoughts of “what if” stalking your mind. She began writing horror after feeling the genre of zombie horror was getting too far away from actual horror, forgetting what a zombie is, and what that can mean to your world.
The recent advents of movies and literature have pushed the concept of the flesh eating undead too far into the realm of the mundane and cute. There is a need to once more rehash the genre with the proper respect to the psychological ramifications, and sheer horror, that the monsters deserve.
That sheer horror of possibly having to kill your friends, family, or anyone else for that matter before they become a shambling corpse willing, even driven, to consume the flesh of their own. The psychological destruction to the minds of the living their deaths could cause to those around them.
With the release of The Risen series, she hopes to, once again, breathe fear back into the genre that has always been a favorite of hers. Crafting her stories with honest emotions, and believable circumstances, she creates her world with an added twist to the classic monsters. She believes nothing is sacred in the land of horror inviting the reader to explore the depth of that concept by luring them deeper into her realm with visual images and emotional drama wrapped with a sparkling, gore dripping bow.
With open arms, she welcomes them back into the world of horror hoping they enjoy the ride, but requests they do keep all their limbs inside the ride at all times. The Risen are waiting, and they are hungry.
I know when I read a Marie F. Crow book, I am going to be on one heck of a ride. With a stop in emotionalville. Her ability to draw strong emotions from you while at the same time creeping you out, is phenomenal. That’s true talent. This is a short but fantastic read! I love the world she has created. Seeing different points of view of the same events from the first book only adds to my curiosity and has me wanting more. I give this 5 stars.
Omg just wow!! I am Loving the twists and how each of these books somehow connects them to the first book with Helena and the motorcycle group. I think it is awesome that we will see them all together at some point. These zombie books have everything to satisfy its reader. They are so intense and they keep u on the edge of ur seat biting ur nails and needing much more. The only downside is that eventually the stories end.
Marie F Crow has done it again. This Risen book is just as good as her earlier ones, if not better! I was caught up from the moment the book started. I loved it, I was worried at first with a new cast.. I wasn’t sure it was going to be the same or draw me in, but I loved this new cast and this new side to the world they live in. The journal entries interested me, kept me thinking, along with the ever present refrain, “Don’t let my daughter see me die today”, we are compelled to keep reading, because if you know Marie F Crow’s style, if you love them, they will die.
This story had a whole new cast, and can be read without reading the other books, though reading them in order is always the best way to go. The story centers around a mom and her daughter struggling to survive in their new world. We also get to learn the cause of the zombie plague, and more details about it in this story. She gives us a different side of the world, different characters, quite different from Helena and her group. This mother/daughter foucs really keeping this tense and interesting, such a strong dynamic. We travel with the mom and daughter, meeting other survivors, and trying to find hope in this dark, dark world. I can’t even explain how much I liked this book, but as a warning, this is not a HEA. This is a continuing story, and things do not end all settled and happy, it’s the zombie apocalypse! Why would they?!
An amazing story, amazingly well written and completely engaging. You won’t put this book down, and you’ll read to the end, and you’ll want to throttle Marie F Crow, while simultaneously wanting the next book right now! Check this series out, Zombie loves, you won’t regret it!
I am in love with this author’s style! Bring on the next book! Hopefully very soon! ;)
*I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.
When I found this little gem in the Amazon free section, I was unaware that it was actually the third book in an already established series. However (thankfully), this novel can (and does) act as a completely stand alone novel. You are given enough back-story to understand the "outbreak", and just what the world has become. I didn't find myself becoming lost or confused, and I have to say this is the first time a "zombie Apocalypse" book has MADE ME CRY.
Lets back up for a minute shall we? The Risen: Remnants is one of those books that takes a concept that most will consider "overdone" or "gory", and makes it feel real. That isn't to say that this novel is not without its "gory" moments however, as I definitely wouldn't recommend it for those with a squeamish stomach, or anyone under the age of 15. However, there is more "depth" to the story than just the gore, and that in my opinion makes it worth reading. You gain an understanding for the characters, for their daily fight for survival and the lows they have undertaken in order to establish a sense of normalcy. The characters become real to you, you worry about them, your heart races for them, and you find yourself reacting to their plights more than you expected.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Ms.Crow's take on "zombies". While I won't say too much as I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the series, I will say that it was a refreshing take on a popular subject.
All of that being said, I will definitely be checking out the rest of her series, as she has gotten me hooked!
After reading The Risen: Dawning, I really looked forward to reading another book from The Risen series. Theres some new characters and a whole new set of dangers for Beth and her daughter, Genny. Surviving day to day, they encounter a group of people that kindles the memory of what it is like to have a family. There is little time for teen romance in between this, as they soon have to run for their lives again when their few moments of sanity is attacked again. The Risen: Remnants is an emotional and gripping read from start to finish. This is a great series for zombie enthusiasts and readers who like vivid characters and a well-crafted plot.
I have just spent the past 24-36 hours immersed in the world of Marie F. Crow and I am astonished! I love this series! I can honestly say that it is by far one of my favorite series in the zombie genre, and trust me I have read plenty. As soon as I finished the first book, I went and purchased the other 3, because I HAD to know what was going to happen! Completely hooks you and drags you in! I would recommend this series to anyone who is about the human side of things and not just the zombies!
The Risen: Remnants is another can't read it fast enough but don't want it to end book! The Risen series just gets better and better with each book. This book answered some questions brought up in The Risen: Dawning but it still left me anxiously waiting for the next book in the series. I love The Risen series and Marie F. Crow is still my favorite new author.
