This was a good read. Mandy is dealing with raising a son after her husband dies. Hunter is a man who has been through a lot too. However, these two opposites eventually find happiness together. Even though they have to deal with some issues first.
It's lazy ass writing with a hollow door mat main character.
1. BOTH Mandy and Hunter plan to live off "investment money" - considering Mandy was basically a teen bride, whose only job was being a wife(NOT a parent despite having a son), and her husband was in the military- aside from piddily life insurance, that's just nonsense. Not that great single income supporting husband/wife/child. HA. Investment money. Right. And Hunter. Army. Infantry. Turned cop. Who gets shot. So. Massive medical bills AND a divorce. His ass does not have "investment money" 2. Mandy is a shitty half assed parent. Just flat out. She doesn't talk to her son(after picking him up from school bc he was in a fight) she calls him a bully when he tells her some kids were picking on him then tells him the right thing to do when someone hits you is to let them, and then go find a teacher. Door mat trying to teach her kid to be a punching bag. She tells him no screen time, but she must just mean on the ride home bc she oks a video game "as long as he gets the mail" aka PLOT DEVICE to introduce Hunter 3. Her shitty ass parenting includes threatening to tell their neighbor when her son has been bad (the wait til your father gets home, just with a random man her child met ONCE) 4. She considers maybe #3 isn't a good thing, but is then overtaken by urges coming from her vagina (and bangs random neighbor shortly after) 5. She lets Hunter, a semi random man parent her child for her/pick him up from school 6. Adam gets described weird/off like 5 times in the first page he's on. We get it. He's the bad guy. 7. Mandy claims she doesn't like Adam's pushiness, but never does anything to stop it. Surprising? No. Annoying? Yes. 8. Mandy knows/acknowledges Adam does not like her son, yet continually lets Adam take her son/talk down to him(Adam, Hunter, and Mandy go to lunch- BOTH Hunter and Adam drive to Mandy's house, Hunter drives Mandy, Adam takes Mandy's son to drop off somewhere- this still does not track for me)
I was hoping it would take a turn in a different direction but no. It's Adam the weird rich guy, using his vague rich guy money to bully Hunter into leaving and then trying to kidnap Mandy when Hunter comes back.
Oh. And. Minor but still annoying detail- if her cabin has streaming services- it has the fucking internet. Trying to claim it's "totally off the grid" while 20 minutes from a small city- again some lazy ass writing. They're "totally isolated cabins" far away from everything but share a mail box that is down both short driveways.
Also in the epilogue, after giving birth to her daughter she tells Hunter "now you're a dad" ...do...we not consider the previous 3 years he helped raise her son anything? Stepdads don't count? Brutal. Sucks to be her son.
I must say Miss Crowne is one of the best writers for enemy to lovers stories. This book flows so well and you get an insight into these characters that you begin to understand and welcome them as family after a few words or so. The book is visually stimulating. So it is like you are within the story. Mandy is such a good character, she has been through the ringer recently and is ready for a change of outlook, not only for herself but also for her son. Hunter is a grumpy, loner, recluse piece of a man. He has also been through the ringer and does not want to engage with anyone. Kc Knows what we expect from her and she delivers. It is with clarity with a slip of dirty. She does this with a huge smile. This story will make your heart pitter patter and you might feel some tingling! Such a sweet and naughty delight!

Predictable romance but unpredictable actions It's a good romance that has a predictable romantic part, but not the development around the characters of Hunter and Mandy. Each flees a past life by taking refuge in a small town where rumors are rife, and as they seek seclusion, they are drawn to each other. However, around them, plots and reversals shake their peace of mind. The story is well written and it held me up, thanks to the underlying action and manipulation part, in the romance. Two people seeking quiet and a new start are living next door to each other in Silver Pines. Mandy is trying to reconnect with her past after she loses her husband. Hunter needs time to heal from physical and mental wounds. Mandy’s young son and their friends have a plot to bring these two together. Will secrets tear them apart? Fast-paced read with lots of drama, suspense and steam. Great characters with lots of depth and an entertaining story. I liked it.
When Mandy Davis returned to Silver Pines, Washington, it was not a happy return filled with joyful reunions; she returned as a widow with a 6-year-old son after the accidental death of her youthful love and later husband, Michael, during exercises at the base in San Diego, California. When she and Michael first left Silver Pines, they were bound for school in LA and, once graduated, for San Diego where Michael was stationed. But now, 2 years into the life of a widow and single parent, Mandy needs to go home to friends and familiarity. So, she and her soon-to-be first grader, Parker have moved back to Mandy and Michael’s roots. Living just out of Silver Pines in a cabin that her mom has given her and which Mandy’s dad built and filled with furniture of his own making, she is reconnecting to the life and friendships of her youth, like best friend Lizzie McMillan and a friend of Michael’s Adam Barnes. And so, with the support of friends and family, Mandy and Parker return home to start over without Michael.
Hunter Anderson former Navy Seal and LA Police detective has also relocated to Silver Pines seeking quiet, solitude and the absence of nosey neighbors. His cabin in the woods is just the isolation he not only seeks, but needs to heal from the physical wounds and the soul tearing betrayals that upended his life and trust in LA. Now, all he seeks is to be left alone to lick his wounds and to try to heal his soul. But Hunter is not a man easily overlooked or ignored; physically large and obviously powerful, he might appear monstrous on first encounters.
But life—and friends—aren’t ready to provide the isolation from people that either Mandy or Hunter seek. With cabins located near each other sharing mail box locations and close driveways, proximity and a 6-year-old boy needing male guidance, provide the gravitational pull to bring the two hurting adults into contact. And when Mandy’s BFF, Lizzie and Hunter’s buddy, Hugh Ford from his LAPD days happen to join forces, operating a covert scheme to bring the loners together, neither Mandy nor Hunter can put up a strong defense against the loving concern of friends. But, even in small towns, friendship can betray—even in the name of love—especially during the season of Halloween when everyone is hiding their true identity and it is difficult to discern the monster from the hero.
KC Crowne begins a new tales of friendship and love with the “Next Door Neighbor” series. Like Crowne’s other works, this first novel is full of interesting individuals dealing with the challenges that life—and their choices—have put in their paths. Each tale is a standalone romance, but the plots often allow individuals to pass through other tales, so that the reader often encounters friends and family encountered from other romances.

Mandy Davis and Parker, her six year old son, move to rural Washington to escape the loss of her husband two years ago. She grew up in Silver Pines and moved into her family's old cabin.
Hunter Anderson is a stranger in town and her neighbor. He is gruff and unkempt, definitely not a people person. He moved here to escape from society. His solitary presence and scary expressions have the townspeople thinking he has something to hide, like he's a serial killer.
Hunter's past haunts him. His only friend, Hugh, is the one thing keeping him from fading into the forest. He knows Hunter and won't take any crap from him.
A friend of both Mandy and her husband from high school, Adam Barnes, has taken it upon himself to take care of Mandy since he knows what is best for her whether she knows it or not.
With the love triangle set up, who will Mandy choose? Will the admiration of Hunter by Parker be enough to pull Hunter closer? Will Hunter's past ruin his present?
Due to Hunter's history he is turning into himself. Underneath his tough exterior is a guy who crumbles when Parker looks up to him. This big strong man is terrified of the emotions Parker makes him feel. Mandy on the other hand while she may have wanted to push Adam away, her words and actions don't back this up. It gets a little frustrating at times but her experience is only with her husband. Through Parker, I love that Mandy gets to see a hidden side of Hunter.
This romance has a love triangle, great friends who have the couple's back, a mysterious past and hot sex. Hunter and Mandt, opposites in appearance, are perfect together. Neanderthal is another great book by K.C. Crowne that is a standalone with a happily ever after.
Neanderthal Next Door is the story of Hunter Anderson and Mandy Davis. Mandy is a young military widow and single parent to her six year old son, Parker. Mandy is still having a hard time dealing with the daily reminders of their loss, from two years ago, so she moves back to her family's property and into a cabin as a way to hopefully heal. What she was not expecting was her new neighbor. Hunter is an ex police officer and retired military. Because of his past he moved into a cabin in the woods as a way to get away from everyone and hopefully away from his painful past. Mandy and Hunter meet in an unfortunate accident that gets them off on the wrong foot. He is gruff, rude and short-tempered to say that least. But the Neanderthal next door takes a shine to both Parker and Mandy even as he tries to avoid them. It is Parker that seems to be the glue which brings them together. Well that and the fact that someone else has some designs on Mandy even though she is not feeling the same way. This also gives Hunter a kick up the backside to make a move finally or possibly lose both Mandy and Parker forever.
This is a book that I wavered back and forth on as I was reading. It is nicely written and has the concept of a great story-line with the outline of good characters. But for me it was several of the story details that just caught me up as being way too off the realm of any possibility. I found I just could not suspend my brain fully to really connect with the characters, as I really wanted to knock both of them upside the head a few times. It was still a good story and I know that other readers will love it, even if it did not fully work for me.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
This story is absolutely fantastic! Hunter has relocated and moved to the edge of “the woods”to get away from people. His trust in people is at an all time low. Hunter is big, hunky, attractive, alpha male, ex-cop, ex-military and down on people after being lied to and cheated on by his wife, as well as his cop partner. He has seen the woman at the end of the road and her son and is not interested. Mandy has moved back to her family’s cabin to heal from losing her husband two years ago. Mandy and son, Parker need time to heal. She is not interested in the man up the road. He is a man of few words and fewer sounds. Mandy is a survivor. She has her best friend Izzy and she is trying to raise Parker without a dad. Mandy has a few neighborly contacts with Hunter at the mailbox, coffee shop, wrong pizza delivery, unexpected encounters. Izzy is trying to help Mandy get on with her life - get a job, maybe date. Hunter has a good friend who is also looking out for him, Hugh. Hugh is trying to help him heal. Get him out, get a job, get him to go to some functions. Will it work? Parker has taken a liken to Hunter. The more time Mandy and Hunter spend together; the more they enjoy each other’s company. They are attracted to each other, have feelings for each other and have smoking hot chemistry- neither have felt this way before, even with their former spouses. What does this say? This is a thoroughly enjoyable well written story. You will encounter lots of drama and danger. The characters are fantastic, well-defined, likable/lovable including Izzy & Hugh & Parker. This is a page-turner! You will love it, really!

In this book we meet Mandy Davis and Hunter Anderson. Both Mandy and Hunter are running from their past and things they just don't want to think about right now. Mandy and her son have just moved home after they lost her husband and her son's father. She just couldn't deal with all the constant reminders of what would never happens. Like the fact that her little boy Parker is about to start first grade and she is doing this alone. Then she meets her new neighbor and the meeting doesn't go well but as time goes on they see a different side of the other. Hunter is running from so many things. The nightmares from his past, his old life, the things he can not change. There is another side to Hunter though and though he wants to find it he would prefer to be left alone. One woman though with her little boy just don't seem to be letting that happen. They may not be around him constantly but he can see them in his minds eye all the time. Can these two find a HEA and a chance to settle the past or will it always be like a chain around their neck dragging them back into the abyss?
This is another amazing story by this author. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don't want to ruin the story for any other readers. I will say this book will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

I feel like is a very slow pace story. We have Hunter (H)who was an ex military/marine/cop/detective who’s wife cheated on him with his partner. Causing him to kind of secluded himself from the city & move in to the mountains on a far from society & move to a cabin. Then we have Mandy (h) single mom with son (Parker 6yrs old) who’s husband passed away 2 yrs & she also decided to seclude herself & move herself & child to a cabin as well. She ends up being neighbors with Hunter. The story dragged for a few chapters & when I saw “few” I mean like 15 or 16 chapters where they finally give in to each other... during this time I was just skimming over the story. It got very repetitive, where hunter wanted to be alone & Mandy trying to make everything work with her son. Finally they got together... & honestly it got a little boring after that too. We have Adam who was best friend of Mandy’s late husband & he is infatuated with Mandy & doesn’t appreciate the attention Mandy or Parker is giving Hunter. The story itself felt it wasn’t unique & kind of predictable at times. I was very grateful once I was done reading it 🤣😂
Mandy is a single mom to her 6-year-old son Parker. After the death of her husband, Mandy needs a fresh start. Moving back to her family’s cabin in Silver Pines will give a totally different environment and avoid the painful memories of Michael and their previous home together. Besides, this was the area she had come from and she had friends she could reach out to.
Mandy quickly discovers she has a neighbor, Hunter. Hunter Anderson is a former Navy SEAL and police detective. But Hunter wants to be left to himself and away from nosey busybodies, and has some healing to do. He has his own issues he is trying to deal with, but Mandy and Parker change everything.
This was a sweet story with lots of pain that needs a touch that others can provide to make it less. Good friends are there to help. And just having a strong male role model for Parker is a blessing. Will Mandy and Hunter see the value in a good neighbor relationship? Or maybe even something more when they are ready to move forward and think about being a family.
Mandy and her son, Parker, have come back to her hometown and the cabin her parents built. Hunter, an ex-LA Detective and military man, has purchased the cabin next door, wanting nothing but to be alone after everything blowing up in his life. The three keep crossing paths, hitting each others cars, exchanging drop-offs that arrived at the wrong cabin and a lot more. The characters are fantastic and well developed, having great backstories and reuniting with friends. Their friends pull them out into the community, working part time jobs and interacting with each other. Hunter has a great relationship with Parker and helps him in many ways. Suspense runs the gamut with her deceased husbands best friend, who is also in this town, threatening people, kidnapping, super controlling her and her son, etc. Loved the way they were able to fully open up to each other and form the bond of deep friendship first off. This is now one of my favorite stories that I will reread many times.

This is an engaging romance with well-rounded characters and great "hooks" at the end of each chapter. Every chapter, I said to myself, "just one more and I'll go to bed", but then the author would end the chapter at a point where I just HAD to keep reading to see what was going to happen next!
I really enjoyed the development of Hunter and Mandy's relationship. The way both of them approached each other tentatively, and even reluctantly, until their attraction just couldn't be denied was handled well and made their eventual coming together more powerful.
I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy romance. It is well written, has clever dialogue, has a good mix of lighthearted and heavy moments, includes hot sex scenes and has a hero and heroine you can root for. I adored Hunter and Mandy both and enjoyed their story immensely.

By the time you’ve figured out what's going on, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter! Can’t say I didn’t warn you. There were parts where I laughed, I screamed, I cheered, mad as hell at both characters but also love both characters. Hunter and Mandy both move to the out of nowhere in a cabin to help deal with the trouble they have been through or to just get away from the everything and everyone. Mandy is trying to get through the death of her husband and Hunter is getting away from well everything and I do mean everything however, if you throw in suspense, mayhem, fighting, kidnapping and throw in a six-year old busy little boy then you have a recipe for out of this world shenanigans but these two get through it or so we hope and they Mandy and Hunter find happiness in their cabins away from everything and world.

I absolutely loved this read! Hunter moved to Silver Pines, WA to get away from people and live in solitude. He’s a gruff, grumbly and sexy mountain of a man. Served in the Army, was a detective for the LAPD until things went south and his world fell apart. Mandy and her 6 yr old son Parker have moved back home to Silver Pines also. It’s going on 3 yrs since she lost the love of her life, her husband Michael. She moves into the cabin next door to the brooding mountain man, Hunter. They are both lost souls. A wonderful storyline that has all the feels, including drama, suspense, humorous moments, a controlling man with ulterior motives, Adam, a friend of Michaels, and insane chemistry between Hunter and Mandy. I was hooked from page 1 to the last. I highly recommend this book, it’s absolutely exceptional.

Helping Each Other To Life A Full Life - Hunter moved into the middle of nowhere and became a grumpy recluse after he suffered a serious betrayal, but he didn’t count on that decision changing his life for the better. Mandy moved back to her hometown with her son, so she could start leading a quiet life after her husband’s death, but this flew out the window after she met Hunter. This book was absolutely mind blowing and my heart felt like it was going to jump out of me chest in certain parts, as I couldn’t believe the things Adam was doing.
Reading this book took me on a seriously thrilling ride with enough ups and downs, that it felt like I was riding a rollercoaster. This is one unforgettable story, that you will be very happy that you downloaded it to read.

Wow, I thought this was just going to be a typical romance where girl moves home to start over, but this one has suffering that started two years ago with a small child to boot and nobody familiar to fall back on. This move is to reconnect and to move onward with life. With the help of her friends Lizzie and Adam and the town where she grew up life gets a little bit easier until she meets her new neighbor Hunter who want to be left alone. Hunter former Navy Seal and LA police detective relocates to Silver Pines. He's there to rebuild his life and heal his body as well as his soul. With the help of nosey neighbors, a feisty six year older, throw in a little drama and a whole lot of supense you get a great story.

The problem I find with so many new books today is reading through them while having to mentally correcting the volume of typos made. I blame this on the lack of proof reading by publishers, and the ease of authors using a computer with auto correct features. The computers know what is a misspelled word but don't know when it's a mistake of the author who types 'what' instead of 'that...'if' instead of 'of'...'dog' instead of 'don'. You get my meaning. Other flaws include starting to type one thought but changing their mind and completing it a different way, but not correcting the sentence to read the way they intended. Although I personally believe this was a good story, I beseech this and all authors to take the time to READ before submission of there work; and publishers to do the same before printing. S. Ovaska
KC Crowne is one of my favorite authors. I enjoy reading her books. Once you start reading it is hard to put her books down. Mandy and her son Parker moved back to Silver Pines after her husband died. She was finding that it was difficult being a single parent to a 6 year old, even with the help of her best friend, Lizzie. She insisted on living in her family cabin, even though it needed a lot of work.
Hunter, a former Navy Seal and LA police detective moved to a cabin in the mountains in Silver Pines to get away from everyone and to be left alone. Unfortunately, the town’s people didn’t like that idea. They wanted to meet the handsome stranger. Hunter and Mandy are neighbors. Things don’t start out too good. Can they learn to get along with each other and possibly be more than friends?
