WINNER'S CURSE: A LYNN DAYTON THRILLER Pub date: August 20, 2024 Publisher's Weekly Review: "Takeaway: Gripping sprint through the make-or-break oil and gas industry." "Starks’s latest thriller, the fourth in her Lynn Dayton series, after (The Second Law), takes readers on a raucous ride of misadventure with Lynn Dayton. . . . Fast-paced and dramatic, Starks’s novel offers a slew of fascinating characters, including spies, estranged fathers, and both upstanding and morally corrupt politicians, all while establishing Dayton as a strong female lead, succeeding in a male-dominated, treacherous industry. Starks not only showcases the profession’s heavy sexism but also its complex web of power, effectively weaving in her own experience in the global energy sector to build a sharp plot that’s bolstered by obvious insider knowledge . . .Despite the many subplots that eventually unfold, from corporate rivalries to international politics, the novel ultimately comes together well, offering plenty of twists and turns along the way. Dayton’s undertakings are as risky as they are critical, but Starks offsets the danger with hefty character-driven scenes that will resonate with readers." https://www.amazon.com/Winners-Curse-...

Incurable, A Short Story by L. A. Starks is a very short story featuring an unknown private investigator, his unknown client, and the subject of the investigation known only as ‘Silver Rat’.
I did not feel a connection to any of the characters. There were no names and nothing tangible to bridge the gap of the unknowns other than some jealousy. This story felt very clichéd to me and had no surprises.
While I thoroughly enjoy this author’s Lynn Dayton series, this short story failed to show her remarkable abilities that come through so well in her novels.
Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way.
A short story about a PI not overtly successful, but well accustomed to the messy, blame-ridden, heart-breaking investigations into ex-marital affairs and unfaithful partners.
The PI get a client; her married boyfriend is cheating on her. He is paid in cash and finds the proof she demands.
Set against a high stakes, multi-million pound entrepreneur backdrop it is an investigation he has over succeeded and blown the budget. But what will the high class woman do with the information, his advice is forget him, move on.
Another wad of cash is exchanged. But he feels he cannot in all consciousness assist her anymore other than forget he ever undertook the case.
I like short stories and would love to see this author put all the stories in one collection instead of individually. This is the story of intrigue, jealousy, and infidelity. The short tale doesn't introduce the characters in detail but instead focuses on what they are dealing with.
