I read and review a fair number of books on exercise. This book had both pluses and minuses. I liked that it had detailed pictures of all the exercises mentioned. Each had a description of the exercise as well, of course—though these weren't always the best—so the pictures made it more clear. The author does offer a six-week plan, but I feel like it would not be suitable for all beginners. Some of us would need to stay longer at certain stages as we progressively get stronger. Unfortunately, this book suffers from several problems. First, even though it is relatively short, the author doesn't stick to the topic. He goes off on tangents about diet and even Herbalife. Yes, I do appreciate that diet and exercise go hand-in-hand, but it shouldn't be so much a part of a book where the focus is meant to be circuit training for beginners. Second, I didn't think all the exercises are suitable for true beginners. While I have worked out at the gym off-and-on throughout my life, at my current level I consider myself to be a beginner for a program like this. There are certainly exercises I could not do as a beginner, like any of them where you have to get down to the floor. It would have been nice if the author could have included simple variations for the harder ones to make an exercise possible and add variety. Finally, this book was liberally strewn with errors in grammar, punctuation, and usage. I did receive a PDF ARC copy, but the errors persist in the published edition. Clearly, this author did not have the book professionally copyedited or proofread—or even run through a cheap grammar checker. There were enough of these language issues to be distracting, even making what he was talking about confusing at times. While all these issues aren't enough to keep me from recommending this book, keep these caveats in mind.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I loved this book. It was concise and clearly stated both the importance of diet and physical activity to our health. Yes, most of us know healthy habits, know that we need to work out, know that obesity is a problem, but when it comes to doing something about it we oftentimes find ourselves lost in all the info out there. This book does a good job in presenting what actually works with sound, scientific methods of diet and exercise. If you want to be healthier this book is a great way to get you started on the right track! I recommend!
This is a fantastic book to introduce the beginner to circuit training. I have a little experience as used to do classes at the gym. This is also a useful refresher if you are returning to exercise.
I love the fact that this can all be done in the comfort of your own home. You don’t need to purchase expensive equipment.
Andrew’s tone is friendly and he explains everything thoroughly. Definitely a book to read if you are interested in starting exercise. This is also accompanied by sensible diet choices with links to recipes.
Great read for clients and their trainers. The guidelines are easy to follow. The exercises clearly explained with use of the photos. Good presentation of what works if you looking to loose weight, get fit and healthy. Author has good knowledge and understanding of use the healthy eating habits together with exercises to achieve best results.
Another good book by this author! Being able to give tips to give better choices when it comes to your health. Being able to lose weight, and feel good about it in the end. It was easy to read, and understand. I recommend this book to people who want to lose weight! Bravo to Andrew!
Very wonderful work with lots of research on the importance of weight loss and the benefits of healthy eating/exercising&living. I recommend this to others.
I like how easy to read this book is. Very user friendly tips and plenty of actionable work outs and trainings to follow. It is written in a way that the experience feels like in one on one face to face session instructions with your coach. A very wonderful good exercise book to have. Highly recommended read.
A great introduction to circuit training. The book was good, the pointers were helpful. It was nice having pictures to follow along. The exercises were good. A great book to add to you collection.
This is a short book that gives you a good layout of circuit training for beginners. It gives you pointers on how to start the journey into circuit training and forming the habit, to help you get in shape and burn off fat to lose weight. It advises you to check with your G.P. before starting this sort of programme, especially if it is something you have never done before. The circuits are laid out simply, giving you a list of the exercises to do, how long to do each exercise in each section of the circuit and how long to rest before doing another circuit. It also shows you how to build up the intensity of your circuit training and sets you up with a six week plan, breaking down the increments to adjust every two weeks within that programme.
It shows the importance of warmups and cooldowns, as part of the training, as well as a good diet and an idea of how you should be balancing that. It gives you a worked example of figuring out what heart rate you should be aiming to reach as you exercise, but also warning you against working too hard, whilst you are just starting out. Never to work out when ill or pushing too hard, instead working on form to start, even if your reps aren’t what you expect. If you work on form first, the exercises will become easier and work your muscles better. You will also prevent injuries by not pushing too hard and working on your form before numbers.
This short read is just the first of a mini-series the author has produced about circuit training and will allow people to follow along as their workouts get more intense and they want to do more. The exercises do not give you any alternatives, as the author puts it, he can’t know what the reader can or cannot do and any limitations or injuries they have, as he is not face to face with them. But it would have been nice to have a few alternatives listed in the book. There is however, a section at the end of the book with a lot of website links to help with basic exercises, stretches, resistance band exercises and even alternative push up types. So this covers a lot of questions people may have or help with alternatives.
The main help with this book was its short length and focus on a simple circuit, with not too many different exercises, therefore making it easier for people to start off with. It gives you the timings for length of each separate exercise and then the rest period between circuits, which is what most people will probably have little knowledge of. It gives you an example of exercises with just body weight, but also gives a list of simple equipment to use as well. Nothing complex, but gives you enough to start and the main pointers you need to follow to be successful. A great starter for many. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Basic Details: Book Title: Circuit Training for Beginners : A guide using circuit training for the overweight, cut that fat, get into shape and feel great! Overall score: I scored this book 3/5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Short Summary of the book: This book is aimed at people who wish to lose weight through circuit training and a healthy diet. The book sets out a 6-week programme of alternating exercises you can do at home with no or little equipment and also gives dietary advice. What I liked about the book: The exercises appear balanced and well organised. What I didn’t like about the book: The book made me wonder if the author is getting paid to promote certain supplements. All the dietary advice advised to take a certain brand of supplements to achieve a ‘healthy diet’. A real healthy diet does not rely on supplements. Instead, it is made up of all food groups in the correct balance. This is something the author also described, but he then repeatedly promotes a brand of supplements. A healthy diet does not need any supplements. Just cut out the junk food, eat a little less and exercise more. My favourite bits in the book: The exercise regimes. My least favourite bits in the book: The push for certain food supplements. Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author? I understand the author has written more exercise related books. What books could this be compared to and why? The book is like a lot of other books promoting exercise and wellbeing. Recommendation: In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:
Children No Young Adult Possibly Adult Yes
If you like books around exercise and weight loss, this book may be the book for you.

I have bought the bundle book containing all 3 books from this series with the plan to get in shape. I am starting off with this book because it offers great and fun workouts that I can work at, I plan to move on to the next book workouts in the future.
This book offers more than just a few circuits, it sets you up to achieve your fitness goal and gives you professional advice on how to achieve it. I have always found home workouts rubbish because they require equipment and are repetitive, but this book has made home workouts fun and simple to set up. I really liked the motivation section because I feel reassured that I CAN DO IT!
I like the beautiful ways in which Mr. Hudson expresses his opinion. His choice of words and kind of illustrations to underscore points - they makes the book interesting.
He is always giving values. I must say so. This is not the first time I am reading his books. He got one there on Amazon, that talks about boxing, and he simplified it for beginners. If such things interests you, you can look it up.
I've just learnt why I'm unhappy, why what I êat, makes me so gloomy and, how to simply start exercising and lose the fat. I'm going to give it a reallygood try. Thanks Andrew. He writes in a simple easy to follow style and all his links work. This is a step by step guide and it makes me feel he's lived it too teach it. At the end you get a free book. That's amazing. Wish me luck.
Great beginner book for circuit training. I will be trying some of these suggestions to incorporate into my week. I like the conversational way the book flows and the good advice. So many training books try to push youth the limits... this one just is helping you stay in the game and turn it into a good habit. Definitely recommend this book
This is book one of the Weight Loss Circuit series and is for people who may not be used to doing any sort of exercise. It lays out reasons for trying to do some sort of exercise and the benefits you will gain from doing it. The basis of circuit training and what that means in terms of an exercise programme are laid out quite simply, with a simple calculation for you to work out what heart rate you should be trying to exercise at, the range of heart rate, with a minimum and maximum. The suggestion that everyone should be able to get a smartwatch, to enable them to do this is maybe a stretch too far for people just starting to exercise. The exercises for each circuit are all ones you can do with no equipment at home, and other than a simple dumbbell which could be exchanged for something like cans or bottles, makes it easy for all to access. Many writers say no equipment is needed, but then list a whole pile of items they suggest as necessary, but this one sticks to what it says.
There is a diet plan included, as well as examples of the exercises to do for each circuit, which days to do the circuit and which to rest, working through a six week programme. There are a few pages by the author when discussing diet that suggest people use Herbalife. Since the author states he has only used this for about a year, I’m against something like this being pushed to readers quite so readily. The meal plan may leave you wondering a bit and also includes items from the Herbalife range quite obviously, as well as Rebuild supplements. But the author does includes links to actual recipes for the simple meals mentioned, some way further back in the book. The exercises are mostly basic, but a few of them may not be clear from just the names, but if you look towards the end of the book, each exercise is described and has a simple photograph to accompany it. Most exercises are ones that I feel most people could do, with only a few of them that the more limited person may not be able to manage.
There is a second book in the series for Intermediate Circuit Training and then a third and final book using HIIT style circuits. The author has also included a link to a free basic circuit training bundle, with further circuits, a food budget tracker spreadsheet and even another one to record your training on. There are even a list of references and internet links at the end giving readers access to matters raised in the book, such as obesity, exercises, healthy lifestyle and meals. A fairly short read, but it does what it says on the cover. The only bit I didn’t like was the pushing of a couple of particular brands, for people to use. But the rest of it was what it said it would be. Exercises for most, which could be done at home with minimal equipment, and with progressions over a six week period. It could have added a few adaptations or alternatives for push ups for example, as not everyone may be able to get down onto the floor and these could be started off by doing them against a wall. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
My first exercise book on Circuit Training - a training method that I use frequently and I plan to help many more people fit a circuit or two into their workout routine to improve fitness gains! Perfect for those looking to start their fitness journey from home!
As a real beginner to circuit training I was very interested in this book. It walked me through all the steps of what to expect and what not too. I found it absolutely valuable and a bible to circuit training. Highly recommended and definitely worth 5 stars 👍🏻
Having trouble losing weight? Then this book is perfect for you. From proper exercise habits, methods and dietary regimes, this book has it all in detail. Highly recommended.
This is a top notch fitness book. It had so much information for those beginning there own exercise journey, and to those who are trying to get back into it. Really motivating, Highly recommended.
Andrew has done a great job to provide multiple home workouts to help you lose weight at home. I feel like more detail would help but this book does what it says on the tin, can’t fault that
Contains many great home workouts that suited me well as an overweight middle-aged woman, hoping to become and fit middle-aged woman feeling young! The advice in this book seems to be working so far
Great beginner guide to weight loss and strength training
Easy to read and offers apt of tools to get started with fitness and overall nutrition and health. Author gives specifics on food and exercises to try. Picture are a nice touch! Of course in person training with someone is ideal but this is a low cost option and certainly is suitable for the times during Covid pandemic where in person may not be possible. This book is helping me to change my life. Retired and having issues with knees and ankles, I knew I needed to move more and more consistently. Love the instructions, pictures and benefits for the different exercises. Concentrating on my arms and legs to get me moving easier again has started off just right for once. They say doing something thirty days in a row makes it a habit... here is hoping it does. Great ideas and information for anyone, not just beginners.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book was very helpful, as during this time of quarantine and social distancing I have been avoiding gyms. It was very informative and easy to read.
A helpful insight into fitness and weight loss. I am trying to lose weight albeit not so successfully on occasion. As for gym work I have a lot of physical restrictions but it gives me lots of ideas for basic exercises alongside my fitness bike I have at home. Given me a great deal of incentive, thank you!
A great guide for someone looking to improve their health and self-esteem. I really appreciated the breakdown of the benefits and the pictures demonstrating the correct stance.
