A psychotic coal mine operator and cynical neighbors with an anti-mining agenda fight out a strip mine permit battle. Mike Jacobs, a 29-year old environmental prosecutor with Pennsylvania's environmental agency, DEP, is caught between the warring factions, but is ordered to "babysit" the case. All Mike wants to do is to protect the environment and neighbors from certain harm as a result of the proposed mining.
Sid Feldman, the Philadelphia lawyer for the mine operator, who oozes power and privilege, offers Mike a job midway through the proceedings. Miranda Clymer, the lawyer for the neighbors, pulls out all the stops to win Mike's affection and assistance. Mike's nearest and dearest friend, Nicky Kane is by his side as his paralegal. Mike must use all of his talents as a lawyer and rely on his discretion and courage to do what is right and not anger the political bosses for whom he works.
In the cataclysmic ending, someone will die...but who?
Joel Burcat is an author and retired environmental lawyer. WHIZ KID, written with his father David, is historical coming of age fiction set in South Philly in 1950. REAP THE WIND is an action/adventure thriller about three lawyers fleeing from Houston to Cincinnati in a Lincoln Town Car though a climate change-induced hurricane. DRINK TO EVERY BEAST was his debut novel. It is an environmental legal thriller about illegal dumping of toxic waste. AMID RAGE (2021) was his second novel. It is an thriller about coal strip mining. His third book was STRANGE FIRE (2022), and is about fracking in north-central Pa. He has won awards from Kindle Book Awards, PennWriters, Next Gen. Indie Book Awards, New York Festival of Books, Readers' Favorite, ScreenCraft, and others. STRANGE FIRE won the Gold Medal for environmental fiction from Readers' Favorite books and was a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Week. He has written dozens of short stories (from the best beer he ever had, to horror, to murder for hire) and six have been published.
John Lescroart (THE 13TH JUROR) has called his writing "complex and intelligent, deftly plotted and character rich." William Landay (DEFENDING JACOB) has said of STRANGE FIRE, "It is a dark suspenseful read...handled with gritty style. A treat for thriller fans."
"I want my readers to feel they are with my characters in the courtroom, a canoe on a polluted river, a strip mine, or in a hurricane. I write so my readers see, feel, and smell what my characters are seeing, feeling, and smelling. If my characters are scared, my readers will be scared too. That is the ultimate goal of a writer."
He was selected as the 2019 Lawyer of the Year in Environmental Litigation (for Central PA) by Best Lawyers in America. He has been designated by both “Super Lawyers” and “Best Lawyers” for environmental and oil and gas law. In addition to his law practice, he edited two non-fiction books on environmental and energy law and has written numerous professional articles on environmental law.
Burcat lives in Harrisburg, Pa. with his wife, Gail.
Typically I'd pass on a legal thriller about strip-mining in Pennsylvania, but Amid Rage caught my interest and I'm glad I read it. Author Joel Burcat is an attorney and his knowledge of environmental law shines here as the story unfolds.
The biggest drawback to this book was the antagonist, an almost cartoonish villain with zero depth. He's a really really really bad guy; we get it. But Burcat's star is attorney Mike Jacobs, first seen in Burcat's previous novel, Drink to Every Beast. No need to read that one if you want to jump into Book 2, but Mike is a compelling character and you might enjoy the first book in what I hope is a lengthy series.
Don’t miss Amid Rage, a thrilling trip into Pennsylvania strip mines and court rooms! The protagonist of Amid Rage, Mike Jacobs, is a likable character with whom the reader can easily relate. Mike is both a clever lawyer and, on a personal level, an endearingly sweet man. One simultaneously identifies with and groans at his missteps as Mike tries to satisfy his obligation to protect a dubious mining permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. What he really wants to do is save the hapless neighbors from the harm threatened by a nefarious strip-mining operation. The tension builds and the reader wonders whether Mike will succeed in pulling a win out of the tricky situation in which he finds himself. The story moves quickly and satisfyingly to a tense climax. There’s just enough realistic detail about environmental issues in Pennsylvania and technical detail about strip mining woven through the book to leave the reader feeling better informed at the end of the book than at its beginning. Burcat’s second book is tough to put down. It provided a wholly satisfying escape from everyday routine for this reader!
Mike Jacobs is a young, up-and-coming litigator in environmental law, working for the Department of Environmental Protection in the state of Pennsylvania. He knows his job, is diligent, and can go rogue now and again, working behind his boss’ back and against standard protocol to ensure the law protecting the land and the citizens that live on it are safe-guarded. Professionally he’s got what it takes. Personally, though, his life is messy.
Amid Rage is the second book in PA author Joel Burcat’s Mike Jacobs series, the first being Drink To Every Beast, which was published in May, 2019. I’ve yet to read the first book, but happily Amid Rage is enough of a stand-alone novel that doesn’t require the reader needing too much prior information: Joel Burcat fills in the blanks early on in proceedings, allowing you to plow ahead with what is quite a page-turning story.
It beings violently, with the death of a mining inspector: he’s burned to death in his home by the villain of the piece, Ernie Rinati, the owner of Rhino, a mining company. Rinati isn’t getting what he wants from the DEP, with too many conditions placed on his operations, rendering him unable to make the kind of money he feels he deserves. He’s not above pressuring homeowners into buying up their property at knock-down prices, either. Basically he’s a vile human being, valuing the life of his three-legged dog Butch over anything or anyone else. Unfortunately, though, he’s a one-note and rather cartoonish villain.
Joel Burcat’s speciality, however, is in the court room. A practicing environmental lawyer himself, the Philadelphia native brings his experience to the table, giving us courtside seats to the legal wrangles regarding permits and temporary restraining orders (TROs). All of this wouldn’t be half as exciting if there wasn’t a decent story to tell, and Burcat has one, thank goodness. At the centre of the plot is a piece of land that Rinati wants to mine on. In his way are people who own homes on that land. The DEP has allowed Rinati some leeway, but not enough. The homeowners resist his efforts and have hired an inexperienced lawyer, Miranda Clymer, to lead their lawsuit. Mike’s orders are to act as observer only, but a startling bit of sexual blackmail forces Mike to take a more active role than his department allows. (I did mention that Mike’s personal life is messy as hell, right?)
So he’s on his own, although he does, in all fairness, inspire a couple of close friends, Ben and Nicky, to help him out. If it wasn’t for the fact that Rinati is obviously insane, and has henchmen that would make Darth Vader question his choice in allies, Mike would have an easy time of it. But no! Danger lurks in every chapter of this fast-moving, and for the most part, engrossing thriller. Saying Mike Jacobs is just a lawyer is like saying Indiana Jones is just an archaeologist. Mike’s pursuit of the truth gets him and his friends into a lot of trouble, with Nicky especially feeling the full force of Rinati’s vengeance. Parts were uncomfortable to read, but in the end I see what Burcat was aiming for. In fairness, I would’ve preferred if he drew his characterisation of women better;in many instances men, including Mike Jacobs, spent far too much energy ogling their physical characteristics to the point of fantasism and wishful thinking. They’re strong characters in their own right, but I felt they needed their own agency rather than being at the beck and call and the subject of abuse from their male counterparts. Still, it was good to see such abusers get what they deserve.
Joel Burcat Burcat brings the story to life with principled and unprincipled attorneys. I like how Mike has to deal with people from his past who haven’t made his life and career any easier for him. Watch out for Judge Diaz and Sidney Feldman. It’s in the courtroom scenes that this novel really comes to life. The action scenes are well done, too. But it’s the personal bits, where Mike questions his choices in love and romance, that need a bit more spark and care. I like Mike a lot. He has a lot to learn, but he’s willing to work hard, and he makes it up as he goes sometimes. Which is what most of us are doing right now, I guess. I give Burcat praise for writing a book that I pretty much enjoyed reading. I expect him to get better the more he writes and publishes.
I thank NetGalley and the publishers for supplying me with a copy of Amid Range prior to publication (Feb 2021) in return for an honest review.
I’ve been looking forward to Joel Burcat’s new novel, Amid Rage, since I read his first book, Drink To Every Beast. I was delighted with Book 2 from the moment I started reading it. This is the second of the Mike Jacobs books and it’s another serious roller coaster ride set in the coal mining area of Pennsylvania.
On the surface, Mike Jacobs might seem like a puzzling choice for a main character. He’s an attorney for the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania. I bet you’re thinking, “boring,” right? But as we learned in Book 1, he has a penchant for getting himself into and out of trouble, both professionally and personally.
Mike is a likeable guy just trying to do his job. He’s also trying to find himself a good woman to settle down with. It turns out that neither of those is easy for him, but along the way he has the kinds of adventures that are beyond memorable. With characters like his best friend, Nicky (no, not his girlfriend. Or is she?); opposing attorneys sexy Miranda Clymer and smooth Sid Feldman; and owner, operator, and chief bully of Rhino Mining Company, Ernesto Rinati (and his dog Butch, of course), the scene is set for action both inside and outside of the courtroom. And the action never lets up until the final scene, so prepare yourself. This is one great ride.
I love legal thrillers. So when asked to review this legal thriller I jump right on it. It was very well thought out. I did read it fairly quickly and it was insightful and doe well. It is book two in the Mike Jacobs series. I did not read the first book and I think this one can be read as a stand alone. I don't think I missed much from the first one. I gave this book 3 stars. The Mary Reader received this book from the publisher for review. A favorable review was not required and all views expressed are our own.
Environmental prosecutor Mike Daniels finds himself stuck in the middle of a dispute between homeowners and a coal mining company in this faced-paced legal thriller. The plot is well-balanced between tense courtroom drama, behind the scenes political infighting, and nasty villains who never hesitate to perform whatever dirty deeds necessary to advance their agenda. It’s not all dark. There’s plenty of humor as Mike gets lucky with the wrong woman while the lady he considers right for him can’t possibly return his affections.
The author’s background as an environmental lawyer brings authenticity to the story, especially the courtroom scenes where I felt as if I were physically in attendance, hanging on every word of testimony. The relationship between energy production and the environment is complex, filled with gray areas that Amid Rage deftly explores while providing us with a very enjoyable read.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Amid Rage. Burcat has a knack for creating an engaging and complex page-turner of a plot, and for rich character description and development, reminiscent of the style of Grisham. His deep knowledge of environmental law and law practice is interwoven skillfully to make a well told story an even more realistic and entertaining one. Well worth the read!
Burcat lets you into his world with concise and clever phasing that makes you feel like an insider. In Amid Rage, his second novel, it is a pleasure to follow Mike Jacob as he walks the fine line between following his principles and living in the real world. The characters speak with their own voices and draw you into believing in them. Be prepared to stay up late to finish this book!
If you love thrillers you will love this book. The action builds suspensefully and the plot will have you on the edge of your seat. Mike Jacobs is a believable, imperfect hero. The sex, the (sort of) unrequited love, the fight for justice, and the moral dilemmas combine to create intriguing conflicts. Throw in some LGBT, gender and race issues, and you’ve got a winner. Who knew environmental law could be so dramatic?
Another great legal thriller from author Joel Burcat! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of reading this book. The plot was engrossing, and the storyline flowed over a beautiful roller coaster ride of twists and turns in the plot, and many different subplots. The characters were well developed, and I really felt like I could see them, understand them, and a part of their experiences. I also feel I learned a lot about mining and how it is regulated, which was fascinating. Although there were obvious heroes and villains in this novel, I think the author did an excellent job presenting many different viewpoints of the issues surrounding mining, it’s regulation, and how it impacts people and the environment. I strongly suggest both this book, which is the second in the Michael Jacobs series, as well as his first novel, Drink to Every Beast.
Author Burcat’s expertise is definitely on display in this story in describing the machinations of lawyers, special interests, and legal firms in this excellent tale. The characters, the plots, and the sub-plots are all expertly woven together. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I almost DNF’d this one but I wanted to write a comprehensive review. Aside from the bland storyline and writing, I had 4 main issues with the book: horrible LGBTQ+ representation, an over-the-top bigot, a one-note supervillain, and sexual exploitation played for a joke.
I was initially pleased to see a queer secondary character but was immediately disappointed in her portrayal. The character has established herself as a lesbian, in a relationship with a woman, and yet the main (male) character’s inner dialogue heavily mentioned that he wished she wasn’t gay so they could be together. This was followed by some of her actions and internal dialogue mentioning how she also maybe wishes she wasn’t a lesbian so they could be together. As the story progresses their relationship continues to push towards romantic, in a way that ignores her sexuality. If that was such a necessary storyline, she could be bisexual! Why did it have to be a lesbian who doesn’t want to be gay? And don’t get me started on the quickness of the sapphic relationships - in two separate instances, the couples are moving in together at the same time relationships seem to start. The trope is just plain stereotypical.
There’s a character that’s introduced to be a bigot in every sense of the word, but it was so heavy handed that it was offensive in itself. I understood quickly this character was horrible; I didn’t need 2 consecutive pages of racist jokes, regressive language, and the f-slur to convince me further. It gave the impression the author was going out of his way to include these jokes and comments.
The bad guy was such a cartoon supervillain. He might as well have rubbed his hands together while cackling. He was such a stereotype of a mafia guy but with nothing to back it up. He just seemed so one note that he’s willing to murder over a case that may just resolve itself in the courtroom anyways? He was very predictable and boring.
The relationship between the main character and another lawyer should have been professional but nearly instantly it was moving towards romantic. We only spent a brief time there before it progressed entirely to sexual harassment. The depiction of her (and really every other woman) needed to comment on how hot she was, and she immediately sexually harassed the main character. The completely inappropriate blending of a sexual and professional relationship culminated in sexual blackmail and exploitation with no consequences. The female characters really gave me the impression he hasn’t spoken to a woman or has any idea how women would think, speak, or act.
TLDR; a big yikes from me.
I received a copy of the book from Goodreads and the author in exchange for my honest review.

Joel Burcat is one heck of an author and be prepared to be CAPTIVATED by this story line. Burcat gets bonus points as well because the book takes place in Pennsylvania, not too far from where I live. I love reading books that I can connect with because of the location / setting. If you're a fan of slow burn mystery/thriller novels that features some intense court room drama, you'll absolutely love this. This one takes a pretty long time to unravel, but if you can stick with it, the ending wraps everything up nicely. The book was well researched from a mining / legal standpoint and you could really tell the Burcat poured his heart into the writing. Though this was the second in a series, I found that I was still able to keep up and not miss much.
I received an advanced reading copy of this book via Netgalley. It is the second book in the series and I haven’t read the first one. That being said, this one does work as a stand-alone novel.
Mike Jacobs is a young up-and-coming environmenal lawyer working for the Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania. Rhino Mining has been issued a mining permit with a number of conditions applied to it. Rhino wants to challenge the conditions, while local residents want to challenge the granting of the permit, so the courts have decided to try both cases at the same time. the DEP has asked Mike to oversee and “babysit” the case.
I have to say that I never would have thought that a legal thriller that is essentially about strip mining permits would have been so captivating.
That being said, this story takes a LONG time to get going. If you’re looking for intense courtroom drama, that comes in about 3/4 of the way through the book. The mystery/thriller component? Even later. I found that the first parts of the book had a lot of side storylines that didn’t really go anywhere.
The book seems to be well researched as far as the mining and legal aspects (I say seems, because I know very little about strip mining or environmental law, so I can’t really say myself), but I found some of the characters to be characatures and some of the situations to be unrealistic. That being said, if you can put that aside, it does get better towards the end.
I would like to thank Headline Books for providing me with a free copy of Amid Rage in exchange for an honest review.
I love legal thrillers, but this one missed the mark a bit for me and I’ll tell you why.
Although Mike Jones was a very likable main character I felt as though the story and it’s proceedings really dragged on. I know legal thrillers can be lengthy, but I would have enjoyed the pace to be a bit more faster but I know there was a lot of information to digest while reading and that part did keep me entertained.
Mike was in a very sticky situation and I think he handled it as best as he could have despite the circumstances, he still tried to make it right.
You can tell that the author has court room experience and knowledge while reading. It’s written as if it was an actual occurrence to me and I think that’s mostly hard to do with thrillers, especially legal thrillers because sometimes the situation can be a bit far fetched, but luckily that wasn’t the case with this one.
I think you’d enjoy picking this one up if legal thrillers are entertaining to you as much as they are to me. It was a good book and I enjoyed the writing and Mikes character the most!!
A really well-done legal thriller—which is no surprise, considering that the author is a lawyer himself! Mike is a well-rounded character, and you find yourself rooting for him to find a way to bring this case of possibly illegal strip mining to its best conclusion. The owner of the mining company, Ernie Rinati, is a horrid but not cartoonish villain—he is very believable, which makes it all the more terrifying!
Added into all of it are Mike's relationship issues, which I believe are brought up in the first book as well (Drink to Every Beast), though you don't have to read that one first to understand everything going on in Amid Rage—it works perfectly fine as a stand-alone. I also enjoy the environmental angle, and how Mike is working with oil and coal at the DEP but trying to champion more eco-friendly energy systems!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the review copy.
I'm a demanding reader and I expect a lot from a book, so I'm ecstatic when I find one that exceeds my expectations.
A thriller needs to do one thing well: be entertaining. I'm happy to report that "Amid Rage" nails that requirement, but what truly sets it apart is how much *more* it has to offer. The characters, even the minor ones, are fully realized, with lives extending far beyond the page, engaging in relationships both familiar and exotic. The settings breathe with generations of life. And the story offers an education in the very real issues of the coal business and environmental policy (and if that sounds less than fascinating you're in for a surprise). I loved this book. Joel Burcat certainly knows what he's writing about -- check his bio. His talents are manifold and I can't wait to read the next volume of this exciting new series!
In Burcat’s follow-up to Drink to Every Beast, DEP’s lawyer Mike Jacobs is once again faced with a moral dilemma. He wants to do the right thing but is placed in the middle of three distinct factions, all with different agendas. What is the “right” thing to do that will satisfy all parties while each try to pull him towards their side and self-interest.
Amid Rage is well written, very entertaining, and educational. I learned a lot about strip mining while reading this novel.
I recommend this a thriller, as a quick and fun read. I only wish some of the characters were a little more developed and less one dimensional, and I would have loved to see/read more about Mike’s spunky BFF Nicky Kane. … Maybe in the next Mike Jacob’s thriller? (One can only hope.)
Amid Rage opens with ten words that catch you up short as Burcat draws you into the dark dispositions of the novel's villain. It's a wonderful prologue that buckles you tight into the passenger seat for an enjoyable and thrilling ride. Through the eyes of the young, bright and all-too-human attorney Mike Jacobs, the book clues us into the complex interplay of engineering, law, economics, science and politics that are present where the rubber meets the road in environmental regulation. The court scenes are particularly engrossing - and enlightening for us non-lawyers - with smart maneuverings between the parties and fresh tensions and turns emerging from the details in the case. A very entertaining read!
Joel Burcat's second release "Amid Rage" was hard to put down and captured and held my interest. The chapters describing courtroom proceedings accurately conveyed the tension, terror and ultimate climatic satisfaction felt by those participating in such confrontations as only can be done by a seasoned litigator " who has been there and done that". Nothing was formulaic or predictable about the plot which is clever and full of unexpected twists and turns. Likewise, the conclusion is surprisingly true to life and not the one I would have predicted or expected. A good read.
It is difficult to imagine an environmental/legal thriller that feels more authentic regarding the rules and procedures involved in the contentious world of regulation and coal mining. While, at times, somewhat overly melodramatic for my taste, the story is fast, strong, detailed and compelling from start to finish. It is also surprisingly well-balanced with regard to the complex issues of our need to protect the environment versus our need for energy. None of this is to take away from the numerous plot twists and powerful action delivered here that are the heart of any good thriller.
Joel Burcat's new novel in his MIke Jacobs series is another page turner legal environmental thriller. We once again step into the life of DEP attorney Mike Jacobs and what an interesting life it is. Who would think that a novel based around strip mining could be a fun ride of love, danger, interesting characters and great courtroom drama. Burcat's legal and environmental expertise shine through this engaging and intelligent novel.. A great read!
In Amid Rage, Joel Burcat accurately captures the ethical struggles of a young environmental lawyer up against intriguing adversaries. As the pace of the drama escalates, so too is the reader compelled to read it all in one sitting. Resist the urge, or read it again, to get the full enjoyment of a well-constructed mystery.
There is a lot of interesting detail in this legal drama. I enjoyed reading about topics which were new to me (mining) while also benefitting from the in depth insights into legal processes. The characters were interesting but I did not feel I got to know them as well as I would have liked to, given their importance to the plot.
I am not one to usually read legal thrillers but I picked this one up and finished the book in a day. There were a couple of red herrings along the way that were really an interesting suprise. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for a thrilling yet accessible read.
Great read....a fun book that is hard to put down. Well written with the perfect flow. Easy to follow the characters and to get involved with the characters, especially Mike Jacobs. I'd like to invite Mike for dinner and perhaps even find him a nice Jewish girl!
Suspenseful, sexy, and seriously entertaining. From coal country to the courtroom, Mr. Burcat blends Pennsylvania culture with legal maneuvering and witty dialogue to create another compelling Mike Jacobs adventure. Looking forward to Mike's next legal experience.
This novel - in a genre that's entirely new to me - was a great read! The story was compelling and it turned in directions I wasn't expecting. I hope to see more of Mike Jacobs!
