Okay so this slapped.

Hell yea, Gwen Stacy. I suspect this is not an ideal place to start since it dumps you right into a lot of pre-established multiverse stuff and there were a lot of references to things that I think I was expected to know…but honestly I’m fine with being completely lost and picking things up as I go along so whatever. This is a lot of fun and the art is wildly cool. Lots of teenage angst and anger and I love how punk Gwen is and how zany this whole thing gets.

Really wanted to be more excited about this one.

Must clarify, however, that I'm not a comic book reader. A sporadic one, maybe. (If sporadic equals a couple of trade paperbacks every alternate year?) Additionally, I can confess (ever so slyly) that I am not a Marvel guy. Despite everything, this reader likes to stick by his good ol' DC universe. But exceptions occur. And for me, my kryptonite happens to be Spider-Man.

Or...Spider-Gwen, in this particular scenario.

Like most of Gwen Stacy's recent fans, I come from the Spider-Verse films. (To my man Shameik Moore, please stop harassing engaged women so we can get to see the trilogy wrap-up with a bang.) Anyways. I had a hard time trying to find a story to pick. I don't know how it usually works in the Marvel Universe, but it's so much easier to navigate and spot singular TPBs for DC comics.

This one is from 2015, the Tom Latour run that tells the story of Earth-65. Gwen Stacy is Spider-Woman. Her best friend Peter Parker had not long ago kicked the bucket after losing his mind and going down the Lizard route! And Gwen blames herself for his death. So does the entire world as Jameson and his Bugle crew continue their ceaseless witch hunt. To make matters worse, Gwen's persuaded by the police, led by none other than Captain George Stacy himself.

We begin right here.

And for a bit, the storyline is quite engaging. But sadly enough, it does not add anything new to grab someone's attention beyond the very pedestrian. There are a few intriguing story beats in Gwen's self-doubt. Her guilt in not being a better hero. Of not being a better friend. The relationship with her father and the Parkers. The small moments of comedic relief, featuring beloved Spider-Verse characters. (Love myself some Spider-Ham!) Also the little glimmers of flashbacks featuring Gwen, Peter, and Harry.

It also really helps that the artwork is so good here. It's vibrant, colourful, and clean. And the suit (perhaps the best Spider-Verse suit out there?) pops off like it deserves to do.

But that's it. There's nothing more here that'd make sure that I remember both the compiled arcs for a long, long time. There's an alternate Captain America prowling around. Agent Carter as the head of SHIELD. A crooked Matt Murdock. A rockstar, Felicia Hardy. Green 'Harry Osborne' Goblin. Even a pregnant Jessica Drew! But it just ends up feeling too much within too little. Padding things up with a lot of 'this and that' to fill up a void left without a proper, credible storyline.

Spider-Gwen deserved better than this. And I'm not feeling too excited to commit to this run and move on to the next volumes. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. For now, four stars for the art. Two and a half stars, overall. And five shiny stars for my girl, Stacy.

Spider-Gwen is a wonderful character that takes an infamous grudging and spins it into something fresh and new. Her role in both the Spider-Verse movie and event is a wonderful highlight.

But her actual comic kind of sucks. It tries to lean into a punk rock aesthetic but mostly ends up revolving around Gwen complaining and dealing with too much angst. There’s little levity to be had, despite how much potential there is for it. The conflict is interesting, with a nice spin on Daredevil and Frank Castle, but the other villains (Venom, Green Goblin and Wolverine) are disappointing.

My biggest issue however is the world building. While it may initially sound like this is based around a universe that diverges from the core Marvel timeline when Gwen got bitten instead it turns out to be a bizarre mishmash of alternate takes and divergent backstories that force themselves to contort to the expected personas. Harry Osborn is called the Green Goblin because he’s rich and likes fantasy stories - one of the many examples of the comic screaming “DO YOU GET IT!” rather than provide a genuinely new and interesting take.

If you’re interested in Spider-Gwen I’ve gotta say maybe skip the Latour/Rodriguez issues and skip to McGuire’s superior Ghost Spider stories

(This review stands for all 40 issues of the original Spider-Gwen comic, not just the 11 presented in this collection).

Buen comic.

I think I would've enjoyed this more if I knew more about the Spider-Man universe and its recurring characters. It also just wasn't a very satisfying read overall because the reason I picked this up was because of the version of Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse movie where she's a competent and well rounded hero. And the events in this comic take place after the events of the multiverse crossover of spider heros. But she seems to have a difficult time fighting people in her universe and it felt like they made her weaker than her movie counterpart. Which is odd because from what I've heard it's generally the opposite problem, that they make heros weaker in the movies. The art was cool though and it did have a plot and dealt with some strong and complicated feelings of grief and guilt, which seemed to be the main focus of the comic. So while her internal struggle was well documented, I was disappointed because I had picked up the comic with the hope of seeing some badass lady kicking evil ass for 200 pages and didn't get as much of that as I would've liked.

Classic superhero storylines combined with the prettiest artwork I've ever seen in a superhero comic book means this book is a super fun time for anyone interested in Spider Gwen. I will say the world-building and multiverse introduction is a little jarring for those unfamiliar with the Marvel universe, but again the art is GORGEOUS and I wish I could have, like, half of this book printed out as posters for my house.

I've always found Marvel content difficult to break into, with so many cameos and characters and references to decades of content I've simply never read, and this book was no exception. but overall I think they balanced Gwen's character arc well with all of that.

A good exploration of guilt and grief, and the art was phenomenal

A decent read but nothing to write home about; I've not read much of the All-New All Different Marvel, but thought this was okay. Lots of great art and one-liner jokes with a decent plot. I won't be continuing with the series, but it was nice to check out.

I wanted to like it more, but it showed enough promise to pick up the next volume. I was honestly hoping for something lighter, more along the lines of Ms Marvel. This is heavier and is setting up for a good amount of angst and struggle. There are definitely jokes and fun references, but not enough for me to consider the comic funny. Is it too shallow of me to want to love it because of the badass character design?

"This mask is my badge"

Edge Of Spider-Verse #2 - 3 stars

A solid introduction to the character but a little too rushed which seems to be a reoccurring issue I have with comic anthologies.

#1 - 4.5 stars

Absolutely loved this one. We're introduced to Gwen's bandmates - including the hot-headed Mary Jane whom the band is named after. The grief from Peter's death and the frustration due to an inability to tell her bandmates her identity as Spider-Woman causes tension between them and Gwen feels isolated, bottling up her emotions and only releasing them at the drumkit.

#2 - 4 stars

Mary Jane is a toxic friend. Sometime after a nasty fight with Vulture Gwen is found passed out, beaten up and concussed outside a bar. You haven't seen her in months. But all you have to say is how dare you miss band practice and not talk to us? Get a grip girl this isn't about you.

Oh, and Spider-Ham makes an appearance. He also eats hot dogs - but he's not a cannibal because he's a cartoon trust me bro.

#3 - 3 stars

I love this variant of Vulture but overall this issue was kind of forgettable. Though Hobie accusing Spider-Woman of rolling in the hay with Captain Stacy due to favouritism was definitely...something.

#4 - 4 stars

Gwen talks to Aunt May and the guilt almost overwhelms her. Incredibly emotional issue but I think Robbi Rodriguez has Same Face Syndrome because Gwen and Aunt May look like the same person at different stages of life.

#5 - 2.5 stars

I just don't find Felicia Hardy compelling, sorry. This issue felt like a filler episode.

Overall volume rating - 4/5

A great re-imagining of the Spider-Man mythos that is as much of today as Ultimate Spider-Man was in 2000. There's clearly some backstory in the "Edge of the Spider-Verse" story that is not collected here but I was able to understand everything without having read that. Except for one issue with an ABRUPT change in style (fill-in artist), the art is gorgeous and flows very well.

I thought this book was a darker take on a warped world. That's not to say it wasn't mind-blowingly good, but it definitely wasn't what I was expecting. So let's just dive right in, shall we? The Mary Janes are dysfunctional and probably unhealthy, so automatically I loved them. I think that the idea of MJ as a selfish punk singer in a girl band where she's known as Em Jay is a great change of pace. Obviously, there's a more mature spin on the spider story here. For example, in Marvel Rising, Gwen's best friend did get powers and mysteriously died by Spider-Woman's supposed hand, but the cartoon gave us a more kid-friendly approach to how Peter obtained those powers. Needless to say, Peter Parker didn't get powers because he had been bullied for years until it messed him up in the head enough to where he gave himself powers even if they were dangerous. It was just kind of weird that he turned into a big green lizard. Even weirder, the mayor Jameson, decided to blame and witch-hunt the Spider-Woman. Kind of crazy how the cops looked for something to blame and completely disregarded the actual crime at hand that somehow includes S.H.I.E.L.D., S.I.L.K., and a guys named Connors. As nice as Gwen's jokes were, I don't think they provided for much comic relief. Overall, the tone of the book was dark and the humor didn't overpower that. I also understand that she cracks wise because she's nervous, but that kind of feels cliché. I do think that Gwen has a point about trigger-happy cops. Are these really the people that are expected to protect and serve? I totally appreciated Gwen's nickname for Murdock. Murderdock. Being Kingpin's lawyer, it only makes all the sense in the world. I just can't believe it took me halfway through the book to realize that Murdock was blind. However, I express no sympathy. He's still a dirty, low-down scoundrel. You know, I thought it was interesting considering the fact that even though the book is called Spider-Gwen, she is known only as Spider-Woman. I'm honestly wondering if that's supposed to foreshadow something. If we're being truthful here, Gwen has revealed her identity to her dad and Harry. Also, Murdock figured it out thanks to the fricking Vulture. I think it's very fitting that the Mary Janes' cat is called Murderface. If you've ever known a cat, ever, you know what I'm talking about. I don't know if I'm just naïve or if it's Gwen's world, but everybody in the book seems to be power hungry. Peter wanted to be special, Toomes wanted to be known. What is wrong with people? Haven't we witnessed how that doesn't work out? Seeing Spider-Ham in this art was awesome. There's some comic relief for ya right there. I swear, I do the same thing as Gwen when I lose my phone. I freak out like my whole world has ended. I feel bad that Captain Stacy was taken off the case, especially since he was replaced by former military and other top secret bad stuff Frank Castle. I'm glad that he stopped Murdock from killing Castle, but I have to wonder if he will regret that choice. By the way, I'm super lost over all the gas stuff. Why the heck does it keep permeating throughout every other issue? Where do you even get this stuff? I do hope that Uncle Ben and Aunt May can get some peace of mind. Those poor people accidentally put it all on Gwen's shoulders, but maybe we can find out more about the wounded S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and the Lizards. I get that the tearing down of homes and Ma and Pop places suck, but vandilazing in-progress corporate buildings won't change much, Hobie and Izzy. So I know diddly squat about this Felicia character, but I feel sort of bad that she hasn't been able to get vegenance for her father due to Murdock's state of existing. I'm not sure if I 100% like DeWolff, but if she solves the Peter Parker mess, I will be her best friend. Though, I'm not a fan of the whatever she's got going on with Captain Stacy. I like the way that the writers incorporated Harry's story. He's the Green Goblin because he has lots of money and he's a D&D nerd. Quite clever. I just hate that Harry blamed himself for not speaking up, and then blaming Spider-Woman because it's easier than taking responsibility for yourself and your own actions. I truly wish he didn't take the lizard mutagen, but I'm glad that Gwen gave him a second chance after he repented. You know, this version of Captain America is totally kickass. An African-American. Take that, ya racist Nazis. I'm grateful that Gwen returned Pine Cone to the Bodega Bandit. He's a pretty lame villain, as far as villains go, but he's predictable and at least he really does care for something. And here's the real question: Is Peter still one of those lizard things? I mean, really? I love that we got to see pregnant Jessica Drew. I've never actually read any of her Spider-Woman books, but I've seen her around. Also, she's funny because she's preggers. It's also kind of nice to see girl mentor advice. To clarify, I now know that Gwen lives on Earth-GS. And our normal Marvel universe is Earth-GIG. (Or maybe it's Earth-G1G? It's not really clear.) Gwen's Falcon falling for Betty from the Mary Janes is amusing to me. At least Spider-Woman might have some help from her Captain America, so she's less of a criminal in the eyes of the law now. I want to see what Dad Cop is 'cause that just sounds amazing. I think the art was apropos for the comic because it was quite stringy and silk-lile, similar to a spiderweb. I recommend this book to spidey fans because I loved it.

I like Spider-Gwen herself, but just got a bit overwhelmed by the 'alternate universe' aspects of this. Punisher is a cop! Captain America is a woman! Peter Parker is Uncle Ben AND the Lizard! ugh. Too many knowing winks at the audience for me.

I have to Stan. Anyway. Je lirais clairement la suite

I was disappointed in this volume but I’m intrigued enough by Spider-Gwen to read the second one. I felt like a lot of information was missing from this arc, coming in as a n00b to the Spider-Verse. I never felt truly connected to Gwen Stacy and couldn’t understand why she felt responsible for Peter Parker’s death since it was never made very clear how or why he died. It was hard to feel invested in her character and story, which also jumped all over the place without explanation. Okay, suddenly we are in a different universe talking to a pregnant Jessica Jones, who is revealed to be Gwen’s mentor, even though it’s the first time we’re seeing her and we never see her after the one scene. Okay, now we’re seeing a teeny bit of backstory on Captain America, who in this universe is female and black (which was totally awesome btw). It was very disjointed and chaotic, and difficult to track with. Overall I felt the story lacked a certain amount of spark, like how I’ve felt reading Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel.

It was fun to see other Marvel characters randomly pop in, like Peggy Carter. There was also a single shot of lady Thor, which had me hoping she would show up later on, but never did.
