Fake dating her best friend’s boyfriend? What could possibly go wrong?
Madison Brown has had enough change this year to last a lifetime. All she wants is to fly under the radar and get through her last two years of high school. But her best friend Hannah has other plans. Hannah wants to be one of the popular girls. And that includes becoming a cheerleader and dating the star of Sweet Orchard High’s golf team. How does Madi fit into Hannah’s latest scheme? Madi has served as Hannah’s buffer since they were kids. If straight-A student, goody-two-shoes, Madi is around Hannah’s dad is more likely to allow her a little leeway from his super strict rules.
But it’s one thing to try out for cheerleading despite having absolutely no desire to execute a toe touch or a herkie. Pretending to date Hannah’s new boyfriend Levi Daniels so she can hide the relationship from her dad? Now that’s a whole other story. Especially when it feels like Levi understands Madi better than anyone ever has.
With everything else in Madi’s life spinning out of control, her friendship with Hannah is the one thing she’d like to keep together. But as Hannah gets closer to her goal of becoming popular, leaving Madi and Levi alone together, he starts to bring out parts of her she’s never let anyone see, not even Hannah.
The dating might be fake but the feelings are getting real and Madi will do anything to make herself believe that isn’t true.
This was cute! Par for the Course is Sincerely Mickie’s debut novel and it was a wonderful book. I am so glad that I took the chance on it and I will definitely be reading more of her books! Madison Brown is just trying to get her life back in control. However having Hannah, the VP’s daughter, as a best friend can make things complicated. Things get even crazier when Hannah asks Madi to fake date her boyfriend, Levi, so that she would not get in trouble. Fake dating should be easy right? But what happens when Madi starts to feel herself falling for Levi? I really liked Madi. I felt as if she was a likable character. She had her faults but she tried hard. Madi had a hard life but she didn’t let it get her down. She tried hard to bounce back after the accident, but some days were harder than others. I thought that she was such a strong character, but she also needed to learn to ask others for help. I really liked reading about her and Levi. He helped bring her out of her shell. Levi was sweet, he was too good for Hannah. I thought that he was such a thoughtful guy, he wasn’t your stereotypical jock. I found it really cool that he played golf and that he didn’t let his buddies convince him to play football. He was his own person, but he too had his own demons. As I got to read more about him, I liked him more and more. However, he had to learn how to move on and fight for what he wants. Levi and Madi were so cute! Sigh. They really complicated each other. They helped ground each other and they understood what the other person was going through. I liked how Levi encourgead Madi to be herself and not confirm to what others thought. The story line was good and I was interested the whole time. I am always amprehnsice about fake relationships, but this was a great book. There were a couple of bumps in the road, but Levi and Madi got their happy ending. Par for the Course was a great debut novel! I would definitely recommend it. It is relatively clean however there are mentions of underage drinking and a gay character. I can’t wait to see what else Mickie writes! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Madi just wants to have a normal, peaceful junior year of high school. But Hannah, Madi’s best friend, has bigger goals—she wants to be popular. Her solution is to join the cheerleading team, dragging Madi along with her. Madi doesn’t want to lose her friendship with Hannah, but cheerleading is not her thing. And when Hannah decides to date Levi, the school’s star golf player, she convinces Madi and Levi to fake date each other to hide the relationship from her dad. The problem? Hannah is often with her new friends, leaving Madi and Levi alone which only brings them closer. Madi starts to realize that she and Levi are a little too close, but she doesn’t want to let Hannah down…
This is Mickie’s debut novel and it was so good! I really liked Levi and Madi. They were so good for each other, and they have a lot of really sweet moments together. I felt bad for Madi as her life was kinda falling apart, but she put herself through some rough situations for Hannah’s sake. Levi has his own struggles too, but I loved how he and Madi were there for each other. It was rather refreshing to see a male love interest who played golf instead of football! Hannah was a character that I really, really didn’t like. She was self-centered, dishonest, and rude. I liked most of the rest of the characters, like Elliot who runs the science club! As cute as this story was, there are some deeper elements too. Family dynamics, loss of loved ones, etc. are some of the themes in this book. I think it was handled very well by the author!
This was definitely an excellent debut novel! Fans of YA romance books should definitely read this! It’s a very cute story and I’m looking forward to more books from Mickie!
He was literally just such a sweet and swoony guy, y'all.
I've said it SO many times, but I just loveeeee fake relationship plots. I really do. And it was soooo hard to read about Madi and Levi "faking it" when they CLEARLY belonged together! I just wanted Levi and Hannah to break up so badly, lol!! Also, as others have pointed out, I loved how Levi played golf instead of the "usual sports," I thought that was so cuteeeee.
As far as content goes: So, there is language. Nothing really extreme, but definitely more than a few curse words. And obviously, it's a fake relationship romance, so lying IS part of the plot! I will add that just overall, there is definitely some dishonesty among different characters. Underage drinking does happen, and Madi's dad is an alcoholic...which plays a very big part in the story. A secondary gay character is essentially bullied. Teen pregnancy is mentioned. Foster care is mentioned. Grief, anxiety, and anger are some of the major feelings that are experienced and talked about. I personally wasn't triggered by any of this, but other readers might be...so please take that into consideration.
While the book definitely had its cute and swoony moments, this was honestly more of a heavier read for me. The romance between Madi and Levi was there, but I personally wouldn't consider this a light, fluffy book. That being said, if you enjoy YA romances with more serious tones...I think you should add the book to your TBR! 💕
