About the author

OZAKI Minami (尾崎南) - her real name is MINAMI Ryo (南亮). Said to be the "queen of doujinshi", Ozaki Minami is one of the most eminent shoujo mangaka of the 4th generation of shoujo-manga. Her debut work was Chuusei no akashi (Proof of loyalty), published in 1988 on Margaret. The following year, her work 3 Days was published in Margaret No.6. (Both of these can be found in Zetsuai -1989- volume 5.) At the same year (1989), she started Zetsuai -1989- and became very popular. She is now working on the sequel, Bronze -Zetsuai since 1989-.

In an interview, she said she had never previously thought of being a mangaka. She describes herself as a willful, negative, conservative, petty, gloomy, niggardly, nervous, forgetful, untruthful, anxious, asking-for-trouble, self-destructive, boring person.

I've read this volume with tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. Boy! Why these two have to be so complicated? The first chapters were all about Izumi and his feelings for Kouji. He struggles, suffers and loves with intensity. He's so innocent, I want to hug him.

Oh, well, I could go on and on about the awesome-ness of Bronze, but I have vol.2 waiting for me. Recommended to those that like to drop a tear or two ;)

I don't think I'll be reading any more volumes in this series. The whole relationship between Koji and Izumi rubs me the wrong way. Koji is a psycho and Izumi is the willing victim that gets blamed for every crazy thing Koji does in the name of his "love" for Izumi. If Koji's obsession were at least portrayed as wrong but no, it's presented as something beautiful, a thing to cherish. No, just... no.

Manga recomendado: ‘’Zetsuai 1989’’, y ‘’Bronze: Zetsuai Since 1989’’, de Minami Ozaki. Ediciones Glénat. 20 tomos en 2 partes. Último tomo especial en japonés. Homosexualidad, relaciones tóxicas, erótica, amor…
Mi primera colección Yaoi. Insistí mucho a los vendedores de las tiendas de cómics para que se hicieran con algo de tema Yaoi, hace ya un tiempo. Un día apareció Glénat y me hizo feliz varias veces. Y todavía se lo agradezco…
El dibujo es hipnóticamente precioso, incluso si a veces es irregular y exagerado. También me encantan los ‘’SD’’ o ‘’Super-Deformed’’, que son las versiones ‘’enanas’’ de los personajes. Más cuando el personaje es serio y la autora también lo parece…
Me encanta esta ambigua autora que es capaz de hacerte querer a un muy atractivo bastardo, que resulta que tiene corazón; aunque a veces lo utilice como el culo, que dirían algunos. Un personaje atractivo hasta el punto de seducir al otro protagonista, que lo odia, lo ama, lo odia, lo ama…
Sus ancestros mantiene un linaje de locura y a veces quieres perdonarlo por ello… Pero este protagonista es capaz de hacer daño si pensar en el daño que provocará a su vez, y aun así, lo perdonas y lo entiendes.
El otro protagonista, más centrado, en teoría, mantiene un recuerdo que lo atormenta, a la par que mantiene a sus queridos hermanos… e intenta mantener la cordura, por más de uno, quizás…
Esta historia está condenada a repelerse después de la atracción a la que se deja llevar, y así durante… Una historia perturbada, perversa, llena de amor hiriente y reconfortante a la vez… Una pasión desbordante y completa hasta el fin… que me hizo releerme los tomos más de una vez.
Intentando parafrasear a uno de los protagonistas (el malo^^): ‘’Lo amaría incluso si fuera una mujer, un coche o una planta… ¿Y tú?’’
En la vida real la cosa sería de juzgado de guardia; pero para eso está la ficción…
Un clásico como ya no se hacen: el mismo dibujo de la autora ha cambiado con los años, como les ha pasado a muchos…
La historia tiene dos partes, como ya he dicho. Además de extras y ‘’Doujinshis’’, que son los tomos en donde la autora se permite pervertir totalmente a sus propios personajes, y a personajes basados en otros manga en los que se inspiró: ésta es una práctica habitual en el tema cómic japonés, donde se realizan los sueños pervertidos, explícitos, la mayoría de veces, de Mangakas y Frikis (y así algunos se quedan tan panchos criticando, mientras quizás tienen más por lo que callar...)
Y fuera del tema manga, desde hace ya tiempo, también se hacen estas cositas... Un ejemplo: ‘’El señor de los anilllos’’: relaciones entre personas del mismo sexo, o elfos macho y hombres juntitos y ‘pegajosamente’ acaramelados… en cuanto al tema homosexual se refiere… Aunque para mí, el Manga es cómic japonés, no español ni de otro país…

En las fotos no aparecen todos mis Doujinshis ni merchandise… que he conseguido con el tiempo entre compras a fans de otros países; a través de páginas conocidas o librerías especializadas donde los dueños son también Frikis, y que te traían el material desde Japón; y, por ejemplo, el último tomo, en una preciosa y especializada librería de París en la que si te paras más rato de la cuenta, sales arruinado ;)
Parece que esta historia me marcó, casi del mismo modo que están marcados los protagonistas…

3.5 stars rounded up. Review of the series entire. I hate to say it, as it's inconsistent, tortured, improbable angst, but this is great. Call Zetsuai 1989 the proof of concept: restrained (by contrast! it's actually ridiculous!), brief, forward-heavy in its speeches on impossible, obsessive love. Bronze - Zetsuai since 1989, meanwhile, is unwieldy but it's all follow-through: the consequences of the protagonists's backgrounds and professions; their relationship not in speeches but as lived experience, marked particularly by an elaboration on rape-as-love tropes. Izumi's choice at the end of the original run is remarkable, and a continuation seems insupportable; this continuation is plagued by every predictable BL flaw, and yet Izumi's relationship with his relationship - functionally heterosexual in a queer romance, craving and courting attention which is retraumatizing and toxic and true - is captivating. It's hot mess material, some plot arcs are flops, and of course it stands unfinished. But Ozaki's willingness to go there (where? everywhere, but particularly following through on dramatic, no-takebacks plot twists) is phenomenal.
