Rate this book
He refuses to die…

The Hunter.

When Bounty Hunter Fanian Uldri is contracted to hunt a human female for a wealthy client in a game called The Hunt, he believes it will be the easiest credits he’s ever made. An ordinary human wouldn’t stand a chance against him. Easy, right?

Wrong.

The human he has in mind is proving to be more than he anticipated. In a game of will and wit, he finds himself enjoying the challenges with the female. Will he be able to turn this worthy adversary over to a male who won’t appreciate her, or will he defy his own rules and keep her for himself?

She refuses to give up…

The Prey.

As a struggling single mother of two, Miranda Murphey thought her life couldn’t get any worse. Then she woke on an alien planet trapped in a dangerous game that could mean life or death for her small family. Miranda knows her chances of winning and returning to Earth are slim but she refuses to give up. All she has to do is elude the hunter who intends to sell her and make her way to the finish line.

With their lives on the line and the children’s safety at stake, Miranda has to trust the last person she’d ever thought she would—an alien who refuses to die no matter how many times she kills him.

TW/CW: murders (many) with some graphic details

As always, there are some minor spoilers in this review while discussing character development, but anything significant is hidden under a tag.

Griffin's The Hunt series continues strong in this latest installment—the story of Miranda, the single mother we've had glimpses of in the first 2 books of the series, and frankly, we all were worried sick about after she wandered off with those 2 small children. Note, you can read this book as a standalone, and there's just enough back-tracking to get you caught up enough to follow this work, but you really should read from the beginning and work your way to this point. Miranda features quite heavily in the first part of Esme's story (Book One) and her Hunter has made appearances in books 1 and 2, where he definitely comes off as a lot creepier.

I'm going to start off saying that I'm usually not a fan of children in romance novels. They tend to be written as overly cutesy and twee, often with ridiculous speech patterns that do not feel at all natural, and they often feel shoe-horned into the story. I hate having children forced on me for the sake of having them there.

However.

This storyline is really well done, and while Miranda's 4 year old son, Adam, is on the precocious side, he has a believable naivety to him that's endearing. His enthusiasm for their "camping adventure package" complete with a search for Santa and robots they needed to evade or disable, had me smiling, because...damn, what a clever way to try and keep him from panicking while giving herself something to focus on. His earnest love for his deadbeat father, heart wrenching. He was a well-balanced mix of child-clingy and reckless, impulsive behaviors. So. Bravo for one of the few well-written small children in this genre.

Six month old Lexi, well, there isn't a ton you can write into a storyline for someone so little. She was there and needed to be cared for, but there isn't much you can do with her otherwise. She added a layer of suspense and anxiety as you wondered if she would start to fuss, cry, or have a loud, happy squealing baby moment that could give them all away. As a mother, one of my fears when my children were small like Miranda's was what I would do if I were in a survival situation with a baby loaf in tow—you can't reason with them, and when they need something, they are not quiet about it. I was feeling a bit stressed reading any part where they were trying to stay hidden as a family.

Miranda ended up being a more relatable and lovable character than I had expected, and I really enjoyed seeing her grow from a timid and frightened bundle of nerves into something steelier; she never stopped being afraid, but she forged that fear into bravery and confidence to handle situations and do what was necessary to prevent some terrible fates. I thought the residual effects of her trauma were well-handled—the startling at noises and being jumpy as PTSD signalers—and were enough to show she wasn't unaffected by her time in the game, but she would eventually have a good chance of moving on from it. We're never told how old Miranda is, but she seems to be in her mid to later 20s, depending on how long she was in school to finish up her degree and at what age she started on that. I like that she was able to be vulnerable and make mistakes, but she was always learning and improving based on the outcomes. She could be an absolute force to deal with, but when it was safe, she was also able to break down and have her "weak" moments. She's well-rounded is what I'm getting at, and not any flat genre trope I could think of which always makes me a happy reader.

Fanian was surprisingly likable, especially after what a creep he came off as the first couple of books, and despite the fact that he tries so hard to be heartless in the early stages of the hunt. Watching Miranda get the best of him time after time was, well, delightful, honestly. That dental floss scene, though.

His "deaths" at her hand become comedic after a while, and it was hard to not enjoy them. Shoot, even he seemed to enjoy them at times, despite the painful recoveries.

“You haven’t won yet, beautiful. I might be able to jump this.”
She narrowed her eyes and slowed her chewing. “Liar. If that were the case, you would’ve done it already.”
His smile was taunting. “Maybe I wanted to have a conversation with you.”
She snorted at that. “All of our conversations end up with you almost dead.”

Their courtship is a funny one, for sure.

Like Miranda, Fanian is a complex character with his own traumas he's dealing with. Some of them are long-reaching and create one of the big obstacles in this story. His anxieties and fears were interesting in how they played out and affected his choices. (And let's face it, anxiety is not reasonable as a rule, no matter what reality tells it.) But for as cold and ruthless as he could be, he was also so detail and family oriented, as much as he tried to fight wanting one.

There are some editing issues with this story, especially in chapter 17/around the 58% marker. Could have used another pair of sharper eyes to catch some big snafus like an incorrect character name used at one point.

I'm looking forward to future stories and hearing what happened to some of the less fortunate Prey characters, like our spoiled wealthy white kids who and maybe Ben's situation, but also our unknown fates, which we have 3 of them—I think? Danny, Min, and Yas...I swore there is a 4th one (another woman) whose I can not remember the name of off the top of my head—with possibly decent fates.

And with as much as both the Sket and Okuthyu are mentioned in the series (especially this one), I hope we'll learn more about both at some point.

Anywho.

I obviously really enjoyed this one, and I whole-heartedly recommend the series if you're looking for something a little different in the SFR genre.

In this series, humans were abducted from Earth, and placed in a "Hunt" on another planet where aliens pay for the sport of capturing prey. Fanian is a bounty hunter who joins the hunt to snag a female for a client, a old, vile alien who wants a breeder. Fanian immediately sets his sights on Miranda, a young mother with two children, believing she'll be easy prey. He can grab her, pocket his leftover credits, and be gone.

Wrong! This book could have been called Fifty Ways to Kill an Alien Vampire. In defense of her children, Miranda is no easy mark, and mortally wounds Fanian multiple times. Fortunately for him, he's able to regenerate.

After reading the previous books, I was glad to get another installment and read Miranda's story. You can read these books out of order, but I recommend starting with book 1. Don't know if there are other Hunt books planned, but this one felt like the end of the series to me.

I had been meaning to review this since I read it months ago, but life happened.

For those that haven't read the first book, this series begins with a group of several humans of various ages, ethnicities and professions who have been abducted and taken to what they think is a forest. They soon find out they're on another planet, and part of an illegal intergalactic event called the Hunt . Each book in the series seems to be about one of the members of the group; this one follows an Irish mother of two named Miranda. Because each book is about a different member of the group as the Hunt continues in real time, it's safe to assume this can be read as a standalone . It features a HEA with no cliffhangers, however the fate of the other humans is only mildly alluded to in each book.

The h is Miranda, a single mother from Ireland. She had the absolute misfortune of not only being abducted, but having both of her young children with her when it happened. Her son Adam is in single-digits, and her daughter Lexi is still in diapers, still on baby formula, can't walk and has no speech capabilities. Her situation was devastating, and this was why I decided to read this book after the first in the series. The others were abducted when they were alone , but Miranda had more at stake than them. She had more to lose. I wanted to know how a mother of two young children survived the Hunt .

Miranda was initially part of a splinter group with two others: Esme and Ben . It doesn't take long for her to become painfully aware that having two young children is a massive disadvantage to the brutal nature of the Hunt, along with its taxing survival conditions. It also doesn't help that Ben and Esme are doing extremely well on their own , and Miranda soon realizes that she and her children are slowing them down. .

To Miranda's credit, she is absolutely convincing when it comes to her young son Adam, and I suppose she needed to be in order for them all to survive. She's able to get him to believe that the Hunt is an elaborate game arranged and paid for by his absentee father. The alien hunters who attempt to capture them are robots . Miranda's sheer willpower and determination, fueled by the love she has for her two children, are what propel her through each level she encounters. She endured and persevered, and it was empowering to see her spirit never wavered. She became a true "mama bear" when her children's lives at stake, and there was nothing she wasn't willing to do.

The H is Fanian, the antagonist . He's participating in the Hunt on behalf of his employer, who is too old and frail to participate himself. A contract hunter with no stake in the Hunt other than capturing a human and delivering it to his employer for payment, he is the alien equivalent of a vampire . Fanian belongs to a species that had been exploited for conquest for generations, and one that is still being actively hunted throughout the galaxy. However, the section of the galaxy the Hunt is being held in is safe, most of the other hunters don't even know what species he is, but Fanian is under constant dread of being outed regardless.

And as the description suggests, Fanian is very, very, very hard to kill. Something Miranda comes to find time and time again. It didn't matter what she did - - Fanian kept coming back, and kept pursuing her for his employer. It should be worth noting that there were other humans from the original group still around during this time, but Fanian was dead set on Miranda and her children .

Fanian also pursued Miranda out of honest admiration for her endurance and tenacity. It started slowly at first, but he eventually grows extremely fond of her and her children, and soon he wants them for himself. This posed the obvious dilemma of slighting his employer and risking unwanted exposure . .

There were a few aspects of this story that threw me off a little, one of which being Adam's dialogue. Adam is described as being a child "beyond his years", which is to say he is exceptionally bright for his age. It made sense when Adam started using words like "discover" and "recognize". I've worked with children Adam's age and younger, words that complex aren't in their vocabulary, thus it was hard for me to picture those words being spoken by a child.

Additionally, I felt the ending of the story was rushed, the last two or three chapters breezing through without the prolonged discourse from the rest of the book. .

I also would have loved an epilogue to their story. Did Fanian and Miranda have any children? Did Miranda ever tell her son the truth about the Hunt? It would be easier to explain to Lexi when she grew older, as she won't have any memories of Earth, her father, and the Hunt in general. But Adam was old enough to remember , he'd be old enough to remember his grandparents (Miranda's parents) and the friends he went to school with. How would Miranda break the truth to him ?

With that said, these were minor aspects that didn't detract from the story as a whole, and as a result, this book is a 4/5 stars for me. I actually liked this one more than the first one in the series, the banter between Fanian and Miranda was hilarious, and it was absolutely heartwarming that they all got to be together in the end, safe and happy, as a family.

Review originally posted at BooksOfMyHeart.net.

Hunted by the Alien Vampire is the fourth book in The Hunt series, we are back on the planet of Turolois. This book also goes back in time to overlap in timing with both books one and two (The Game Warden’s Mate and Hunted By The Alien Prince). We follow a group of humans abducted without their knowledge and dropped into a game arena to be hunted by aliens from around the universe.

I wanted to know the story of Miranda and her children, since I met them, in the first book. Several people (probably fifteen or so, if i remember correctly) were minding their own business on Earth. Then they all just wake up on this foreign planet (though they don’t know that at the beginning). They only have what is on their person at the time (which for Miranda is her two young children, a four-year-old son, Adam, and six-month-old daughter, Lexi. Payton got to bring her dog, she’s the heroine of book two.). Once they are captured, the aliens can do what they like with their prey. Some become more like servants and others are used for sex either to reproduce or just for pleasure. If you can survive through all levels, you’re given some money and put up on another planet.

Miranda does come off as a weak woman, burdened with two children, in a game many didn’t think any of the humans would survive for long. But, these aliens not only underestimated humans, they also underestimated a mother protecting her children. No one learns that more than Fanian, a blood drinking alien bounty hunter who has never lost when he entered The Hunt. He was hired to get a female to bear young for his client. He goes after Miranda, knowing she would be able to bear children (though not truly the case, because she could’ve had an injury with her last birth that prevented future births or taken measures to prevent more children).

I forget the number of ways Miranda comes close to killing Fanian, but he isn’t so easy to kill. I love how she works so hard to prevent her young son from getting scared by all the violence he sees. But the story doesn’t end when he catches her and they leave the arena. I think I enjoy that almost more than the arena (it is really a hard choice because both parts of the story are fun).

This is a fun story with very likable characters. I’ve loved all of these characters since I started with the first book of the series. I love how each book in this series (though book three is a bit different) all start at about the same place and we get to see the different characters go through the arena and what happens after. I really hope we get Ben’s story. So far, it has only been women from The Hunt who we’ve gotten to hear about. I would love to hear one of the men’s stories.

You don’t have to start with the first book in the series to enjoy this story, but I do think it would be more enjoyable if you’ve read the earlier books. Especially, book one, as it goes more into the background of The Hunt.

My absolute favorite book of the Hunt series so far!💖

Miranda is the mother with two very young children that we have seen several times from the first book on. I want sure about her odds of what she'd be like but I have to say she's my favorite so far. She was a she won't protecting her cubs! There was no way she would allow anyone to hurt her babies 💖💖when she meets Fanian an alien with a magic voice she almost succumbs to his allure but in the end the safety of her children over ride any fear, anger or guilt she might feel. She will kill, hunt and learn to survive just to make sure her children are protected and if she happens to like, find sexy and enjoy bantering with one of the hunters well it's her prerogative! Fanian knows what it is to be hunted yet he joined the games to hunt one of these female humans for his employer. He chooses the mother because he feels she'll be an easy target he'll capture her quick and be on his merry way. Omg was he wrong. The feisty human female has brought him to the brink of death 3 or 4 times. Each time he sees her when he is just about to capture her she finds a way to out smart him at every turn. Events conspire to make them work together to get out of a dangerous situation and they both get to know each other on a deeper level. Fanian sees first hand that Miranda is fierce, loyal and funny her devotion to her children stir something with in him. Miranda realizes there is so much more to her hunter than she ever realized but she can't give in because her children are her world. She literally almost kills him several time and the banter between then Will make you laugh. You can see the attraction between them that they both right for their own reasons until they can't right it anymore. Will danger, their pasts and evil contracts ruin a love that they both desperately need and want. Absolutely read and find out !best book in th series this far💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

This is not a good book. 30% DNF

There are basically only 4&5 star reviews and that always frustrates me bc it seems like it’s arc readers and authors friends. Idk

I jumped into the series which is fine - I’ll just roll with things even if some stuff doesn’t make sense. This wasn’t the issue tho.

The premise FMC + her 4 year old and 6 mo old are dropped on an alien planet to be prey and hunted and caught by hunters. MMC is a mercenary vampire type. Alright fine. Love this set up.

FMC and kids are basically taken in by another human man and woman as they traverse the planet. They’re being very kind and protective and belong a lot. Not resentful or anything. After 5 days she decides that it’s not fair to these two people to ruin / risk their chances in the game by having her and her kids slow her down. So she leaves them in the middle of the night. THAT is the issue. She keeps saying how she and her kids will slow them down and she can’t have that on her conscience. Are you serious? You’re going to leave two people who are very kindly wanting to help you bc you might slow them down? Or even get them killed? she says it too that they’d gladly defend her kids with their lives. This is the dumbest rationale I’ve ever heard. You’ve got a 6 mo old and a 4 year old and think traveling alone when some other option is available is better? It would suck to have how you slowed them down on your conscience not that you made the most TSTL decision for your children. The premise is the problem. The author could’ve arraigned it in a range of ways that didn’t make it like she was being some self sacrificing type. It’s dumb.

The other thing is the writing is not good. The dynamics and convos btwn the MCs is bad. Idk my advice run the other way.

This book was a fun read. Heroine is kidnapped with her 4 year old son and 6 month old daughter. She is in a game where you are hunted and if they catch you, you either become a slave, servant, or mate, depending on how long you lasted to prove your worth.

At first, the other humans help her. But she finds out teaming up makes you progress in the game much more slowly. So to save the others, she goes off on her own with her kids.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILR SPOILER

Fanian keeps finding her and she keeps killing him. He keeps regenerating. It got to be pretty funny after a while to see what new way she came up with to kill him.

They fall in love. He loves her kids too.

He was supposed to hand a human mate over to Az'ud for money. He decides to free Miranda instead once he catches her.

Esme and Payton track them down and offer Miranda and her kids a safe place to life. She and Finian live happily ever after. There are a few blood drinking scenes and intimate scenes. But the hero spends a lot of time pushing her away.

Everyone including her, thinks she and her children are a burden. No one including herself, thinks she can survive on the own. But when it comes to her children, Miranda becomes a WARRIOR and she's determined to get her children safely through The Hunt. Fanian has never missed his bounty, so when he's hired to bring back a fertile human to a client, it will be done. He was informed that humans were weak, meek and easy to catch, he soon realizes that he was misinformed! I know this story is of a serious nature but, Miranda outsmarts and downright vexes him so much that I laughed till it hurt! She's one smart and strong woman but Fanian is one determined male. When the time comes, he's grown too close and so has she to part. But his past as well as his client are on the hunt. This is a slow-burn, LOL, heck of an adventure that left this reader oh so satisfied!

Oh, Miranda...

I must admit that when I first read of Miranda in the first book, I was unsure of how strong of a heroine she would be, but I was very impressed to see her become a Mama Bear! 🐻

And, ohhhh, the interaction between her and Fanian. (Once she stopped trying to kill him, that is.) I’m not usually a fan of the level of violence in this book, but, in her defense, she was keeping her kids safe from a hunter for hire. Desperate times call for desperate measures. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gonna find you and make you want me!

I love this series so much! I think Miranda surprised us all by morphing into supper mama bear mode. I actually started feeling sorry for Fanian because he was being "killed" every way possible. I hope we get stories on some of the others who was part of the hunt!

The story worth waiting for

I have read the series and waited impatiently for the Miranda and Fanian story. There were a few errors ( called character Melinda) which threw me off,but not enough to distract me. I love a story that makes me laugh and feel for the characters. This one did that and.more. I love this author.

Probably my favorite in the series. Melinda is badass. I liked Fanian. He was a bit creepier in the earlier books but he was almost funny in his exasperation with his human prey and their interactions. He’s more loving and family oriented, just misunderstood. It was sweet.

Hunted by the Alien Vampire

Miranda is one tough mother with two small children to keep safe. Also because of her proven track record of having produced viable offspring she is considered a good breeder.
