This book is adorable and the characters are so goody-goody and sweet that it made my teeth hurt.

The author did a nice job of exploring the effects of the lockdown from different perspectives in an honest and uplifting way.

There's a good range of secondary characters and Jack and Sophie are a couple I could root for. If they'd been a little less basic/dull and had there been more 'show, don't tell' I'd have rounded this up to four stars -it was close- but still an enjoyable, lighthearted read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book.

Charming and sweet is the best way to describe this book.

Nothing better than a nice story to lift your spirits and I believe Chloe James achieved this with Love in Lockdown.

Sophia Trent and Jack Stanton are living in the same building without ever meeting in person. Jack has some health issues and he’s unable to leave his apartment during the pandemic lockdown. Sophia, on the other hand, is able to continue with her job as a teacher. She studied law but after developing epilepsy she gave up her career and now works with kids. Due to her illness, her boyfriend of five years didn’t want to stay with her.

One day after that NHS clapping, she becomes emotional and starts crying. Jack who lives above Sophia can hear her and they strike a conversation. Soon this becomes the norm. Sophia sends treats his way, while he sends special cocktails using a box and rope to her apartment balcony. Together, this duo and with the help of WhatsApp start helping their courtyard community.

Love in Lockdown brings some solid points about the pandemic including mental health issues that can arise from isolation, the need to help the elderly and other vulnerable populations, the importance of telemedicine and exhaustion of the healthcare workers, the need for teachers to help kids during these dire times.

My one complaint about the book would be the ending, I felt it needed more. Something was missing in the romance department.

3.5/5 fangs

A charming and fairly original take on a romantic comedy, given that it takes place during our current pandemic.

Jack and Sophia are neighbors. His balcony is right above hers. They have never met in person. At the beginning of the pandemic when everyone is in lockdown, Jack can hear Sophia crying on her balcony after the nightly clap for the NHS workers. They begin to chat, and before you know it, it’s a daily ritual.

Jack can’t leave his apartment due to a health condition. Sophia is a teacher, and teaches in-person to a smaller group of students. Between the two of them, they come up with ideas that will help their community during these hard times, and Jack enjoys feeling like he has things to do and look forward to. Not only do Jack and Sophia share food and drinks via a cardboard box attached to rope, but they also start to share a mutual attraction (without seeing each other).

Will that attraction last past lockdown?

This is a feel-good, hopeful story written in a time when things don’t feel good or particularly hopeful. From the nightly claps for essential workers to the neighborhood coming together to help each other out (great cast of characters), interesting side stories, and a bit of romance, this book delivers exactly what it promises...a light and fun diversion.

3.5 stars.

Jack and Sophia ‘meet’ as neighbours in an apartment block during lockdown. They both have health issues, Jack has to shield and Sophia offers help ... and this is how their story starts!!

First of all, I think Chloe James does capture the spirit of the first lockdown extremely well. The ‘Dunkirk’ spirit, backs to the wall, we’re all in this together, the willingness and kindness of people offered help especially to the vulnerable, the Thursday night clap for key workers, it’s all here in this heartwarming, lovely, gentle story. I like how the characters reflect on how things have changed and assess what’s important in life. The characters are all lovely and make you want to move in close by!!! I love how teacher Sophia uses Charlie Mackesy’s drawings as inspiration and her class of very different children are so sweet! I love the message about community bonding with some of the different and thoughtful things they do for each other. It would be good to think that friendships forged in dark times will continue, as well as the desire to help as we yet again face dark times.

Overall, yes, I dare say it’s unrealistic but hey, it makes you feel good. It’s sweet, easy to read and fills you with positive thoughts and oh boy, do we ever need optimism in these dystopian times. Thank you to the author for this feel good read, it was wonderful to spend a few hours in such pleasant company and it was just what I needed!

With thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books for a much appreciated arc for an honest review.

Love in Lockdown was cute, but not particularly believable.

I liked the idea of this novel, the Covid-19 tie-in was timely, and the characters were insanely likeable (almost too likeable...they bordered on becoming caricatures). But you cannot tell me that in all those months, our two main characters, Sophia and Jack, would have never seen each other, or looked each other up on-line. I don't believe it for a second. Maybe I'm just not the right audience for this type of book, because there were literally no conflicts to overcome, no antagonists to dislike....nothing. Besides Covid.

I realize the point was for the story to be uplifting in times of deep isolation...but it just came across as a little too "happy-go-lucky" for my taste.

There was also one story line that was mentioned numerous times, but then faded into oblivion.

Anyway, if you're looking for a super light, super fluffy story, this would be a good choice.

4 romantic comedy stars

This was the first book I’ve read that is set firmly during lockdown/COVID times and it was bittersweet. Set in the UK, it seems to have a different feel than in the US. There are weekly clapping sessions for all the front-line workers, helping your neighbor, etc. This was a feel-good book and a great escape for me.

Sophia lives in an apartment building with a roommate. She is still working as a teacher, but with a much smaller group of children. One night out on her balcony, she “meets” her upstairs neighbor Jack and the two begin a whirlwind friendship! They share drinks and food with a little box pulley system that Jack has worked out.

Jack needs to stay in quarantine, but Sophia finds ways to keep him busy and help out all the nearby neighbors. Some need someone to talk with, some need help getting groceries, some need help walking their dog. It all leads to a mostly wonderful sense of community.

There are some obstacles in Jack and Sophia’s path, but as often happens, fate finds a way to smooth them out. Will Sophia and Jack survive lockdown and finally get to meet face-to-face?

This was a fun buddy read with Jayme.

When I first heard about this book I thought "Uh, uh, no way I'm reading this. Too soon. Who would want to read a book about the lockdown when the second one is waving at us on the horizon?" Apparently, I did. After reading some good reviews I decided to give it a chance and I'm so glad I did. What a lovely shot of optimism in these trying times!

I must be thankful lockdown was not too hard for me. I, like a household plant, am an indoors species and lockdown is my natural habitat. Give me food and a book and I'm happy! However, I feel for all those people who had such a hard time out of it.

"Love in lockdown" portrayed the spirit of the lockdown so well I could see myself reflected in so many of the situations the characters were going through. It was curious to check how, even living in a different country, we all went through the same things like the loo paper, yeast and flour shortage or the clapping for the key workers (here in Spain it was daily for three months!).

It was amazing seeing these characters create such a tight-knit community, helping each other even though they didn't know each other at all. This sense of community that brought out the best in people was so uplifting to read about (sadly, time proved that it was all a mirage, cause as soon as we were let out of our homes it all went downhill fast again, but that's an issue for another forum)

Like Troy and Gabriela...

...but not for long.

Jack and Sophia were both so cute. I couldn't wait for restrictions to be lifted so they could meet face to face. I know their relationship was a bit too sweet and perfect, but it was just what the doctor ordered right now!

The cast of secondary characters was an eclectic and lovable one, but my favorite was Bertie (and Tilly). The way he dealt with his loneliness awoke so much tenderness in me and was a perfect example of how much harder this has been for the elderly.

There were also some hilarious moments, like the wedding chapter, that had me crying with laughter.

Uplifting and delightful read that showed how although we may feel isolated at times, we are not alone.

Love In Lockdown was sweet and cute without being sappy.

I’ve decided not to include a synopsis as the general plot is pretty self-explanatory once you’ve read my entire review.

I appreciated that this contemporary romance had a serious side, that there were tough conversations, obstacles, and real world (and past relationship), baggage to overcome. And added bonus, it contained some pretty surprising twists. I don’t really consider the next part a spoiler but I’ve included tags just in case.

The first person alternating point of view between the romantic leads, Jack and Sophia, completely worked for me as I loved experiencing both sides of a blossoming romance and anticipating what is to come especially when it involves a misunderstanding which this novel did. I enjoyed all the side characters as well – family, friends, neighbours, children Sophia taught, and pets.

Love in Lockdown was not only the first romance I have ever read set during COVID-19, but the first novel as well, and it surprised me how much I had forgotten (blocked out?) about everyday life in lockdown. It all seems so surreal now! Anyway, my long-winded point is that we need stories like this to remind us (and future generations) exactly what it was like during those two years, and I thought the author nailed both the positive and negative impact of COVID expertly and sensitively. The zoom wedding was one of my favourite scenes, and I loved all the interactions between the neighbours in the block of flats where Jack and Sophia lived. Equally the loss of freedoms, stress, worry and loneliness associated with COVID and lockdown as experienced by the characters mirrored how we all felt.

I am definitely keen to read more romances by this author.

I’d like to thank NetGalley, Avon Books UK, and Chloe James for the e-ARC.

Oh finally a decent read for romance with Covid as the background. Love in Lockdown is a surprise sweet, heart warmer story. From the title itself, you can guess 2 characters struck a friendship during lockdown.
Sofia the heroine (have epilsepsy) suffers anxiety attack . I can relate to her. I was in the same place on the start of the pandemic.

Miss James writes such a relatable situation with a cute, sweet banter. The relationship between Jack and Sofia is something I can be jealous at. I wish I can have friend like Jack. I do not know who is the author name since Chloe James is a pseudonym name.

Overall a wonderful book.

4 stars!! Love in Lockdown follows the story of two singles living in the UK during the Covid-19 lockdown. Jack lives in the apartment above Sophia but they've never met until they begin talking to each other from their balconies. They get to know each other and it's the beginning of a romance. They also get to know other people who live in their apartment complex and the book revolves around the relationship growing between Jack and Sophia, as well as their friends and neighbours. The book is told in chapters which alternate between Jack's and Sophia's points of view.

I really enjoyed this one, it was a very slow burn but I felt it suited a book where the pandemic is preventing the characters from actually meeting face to face. The realities of living during Covid 19 are all there, from toilet paper shortages to learning how to use Zoom, and if you don't want to hear anymore about the virus I would recommend skipping this book. I liked the honest depictions and how all the characters got to know each other from their balconies. There was a sense of friendship among those in the apartment complex and I loved how they all helped each other out. The romance between Jack and Sophia was sweet and grew slowly as they talked from their balconies over weeks of lockdown. Friendship grew into love and it was an easy read romantic comedy that I enjoyed over the weekend. I liked how the book ended and the loose ends were all tied up.

Overall, this was a cute romantic comedy set in the era of Covid-19. Anyone looking for a lighthearted romance with a slow burn would like this. But I would avoid it if you're looking to escape the pandemic by getting lost in a book, this one will for sure remind you of the current global situation.

This is a very sweet story but, when you are reading a book about lockdown whilst still in lockdown then, well, it’s just a little too realistic for my liking.

Lockdown is so provocative. Everyone has their own stories to tell, ranging from positive and celebratory, to the negative and traumatic. Therefore, I applaud James’s bravery for approaching a topic so head-on, creating a novel that feels like I was watching aspects of my own life earlier in the year. However, whilst James vividly portrays the limitations experienced in lockdown, she definitely celebrates the community spirit that grew from everyone having to stay at home.

Sophia and Jack are lovely characters. James has chosen two types of people for this story: a key worker having to travel to school each day and be a teacher to a very reduced class size; on the other hand, Jack is having to shield for medical reasons. He very quickly realises that he needs to rely on others for support, especially when it becomes clear that even getting a shopping delivery slot is a challenge.

Undoubtedly, James goes into vast detail about so many defining elements of lockdown. There’s reference to Joe Wicks’ PE lessons, our acceptance of video calling, and, most importantly, the weekly clapping for our NHS. It’s surreal to read this in a book that is fiction, because James captures our experiences of lockdown so expertly. Indeed, the writer’s description of how going outside is compared to vulnerable animals was really thought-provoking, especially as I still recognise these behaviours around me. This is why I found the story a little too realistic for my liking.

In terms of a romantic read, this book had everything you need. The growing friendship between Sophia and Jack is lovely. There is, unsurprisingly, a rather lot of dialogue in this story because, not being able to interact much, this was our only way of communicating. I could not help but question why Sophia and Jack did not simply FaceTime each other after swapping numbers to establish a community What’s App group but, of course, this would ruin the magic of the story.

Whilst I did enjoy the blossoming connection between Jack and Sophia, personally, I did not like to be reminded of the living nightmare that has defined this year. I understand what James was trying to achieve but, I crave escapism in books and this definitely did not provide that for me.

ARC received through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sophia and Jack "meet" during the clap for the keyworkers. It's an emotional moment for Sophia and she's moved to tears. Jack, who lives one floor above her, hears her crying and tries to offer comfort. They have no idea what the other looks like but as the lockdown continues, they meet more often on their respective balconies. What starts as a friendship slowly develops into something more.

The book unfortunately couldn't really hold my interest. I think it's way too long for the story it's trying to tell. I did enjoy a couple of the side stories but the main romance fell a bit flat for me. I wasn't invested in them or in their relationship. There are a couple of moments of drama between the main characters that felt unnecessary, like they were only inserted because that's what's expected in a romance novel.

The rest of this review will contain spoilers.

3/5 stars

I just finished and I'm still suffering from the overload of the warm-and-fuzzies and cuteness! This was exactly everything I wanted out of a cutesy romance.

Life in the COVID-19 lockdown is rough on anyone's mental sanity, but when Sophia's apartment complex rang with applause for the essential workers, she broke down and cried. In concern, the man on the apartment balcony above hers strikes up a conversation with her and puts a smile back on her face. Eventually, Sophia's nightly balcony talks with Jack, the man from the apartment above hers, are the highlight of her day. But can you really fall in love with someone you've never actually met face to face?

This was such a fun new spin on a romance! I wish someone had given a copy to me while I was still in quarantine, just to show me that there can always be light and love even in these strange times. I know that there's an inflation of quarantine stories recently, but this one is probably my favorite to date.

But of course, when you have a book that's mildly rom-com-ish like this one, there's always that little touch of unrealisticness that kind of tasks away from the story as a whole. Sophia and Jack's balconies appear to be far enough apart that they have to use a pulley system to send each other stuff. Wouldn't they have to shout at each other? And then wouldn't the neighbors hear it all? It just doesn't make sense. Maybe Sophia and Jack are just more patient than I am, but I couldn't imagine not even attempting to see the other person's face. Jack tries half-heartedly, but he enjoyed the mystery of it all. I guess I get that, I could just never imagine doing it myself!

Though there really wasn't much of a plot, one thing this book excelled at was simply making me happy. Cutesy romance just tends to do that to me! I really should put more into my rotation. Everyone needs some fluff now and then to break up whatever you're reading, whether it is dark gory fantasy, nerve-wracking thrillers, or one of those sad contemporaries that aim (and normally succeed) in making you cry.

I just have one small note: what happened to Anna? This one little subplot appeared where this other girl in the apartment complex started paying attention to Jack, but it completely faded away. I think I would have enjoyed the drama, it's a bummer we didn't get to see more.

This was such a fun book! I'm glad quarantine gave someone some inspiration while I admittedly did nothing but lounge around in my pajamas reading. I would definitely recommend it to all looking for a cute lockdown romance!

This was such a sweet, feel-good read!

I love the idea of two people who have never met falling for each other, and Jack and Sophia's romance was just the sweetest. If you're a major romance lover like I am, this might be a little tame for you. While the book as a whole read pretty quickly, the romance was pretty slow and a more minor part of the plot than I was expecting. They don't even meet in person until the epilogue. Even so, I really liked them both individually as as a couple and enjoyed reading about how their relationship developed.

I would argue this is primarily contemporary fiction rather than romance, as a large part of the novel is focused on the sense of community during the pandemic and there are a lot of side characters who's own stories are tied into the plot. Although it wasn't what I was expecting, I really enjoyed the community element; the author was able to represent the spirit of the first lockdown pretty well and I loved a lot of the side characters.

The only issue I had was with the epilogue. It is written in third person, which is fine, but felt very detached after the first person narrative of the rest of the book. The whole book had been building to the moment where Jack and Sophia met and I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to experience their thoughts and feelings as they finally saw each other.

Overall although the romance factor was a little lighter than I typically like, I found myself really enjoying so many aspects of this book and would recommend this to others who feel comfortable reading about the pandemic (I know its probably still to close to home for some!).

I was provided a copy of this book on NetGalley for review (thank you!). All opinions are my own!

Love in Lockdown by Chloe James is a timely, lighthearted read that will strike a chord with anyone who is trying to adjust to a new normal. This is about overcoming adversity, and finding a sense of community during a challenging situation.

Sophia is struggling to keep it all together when the UK goes into lockdown. She fears for the safety of her mother, a frontline worker, and will be attending the much anticipated wedding of her sister virtually. When she has a teary moment on the balcony, her upstairs neighbour, Jack, is an audible witness to her distress, and offers a kind ear. Jack, it seems, is also struggling with the changes brought about by the lockdown as he is confined to his flat owing to a pre-existing condition. The two neighbours, who were previously strangers, begin to rely on one another to get through the difficult days.

This is a heartfelt story about the banding together of neighbours, and the ways in which a sense of community can be achieved, particularly in times of crisis. I look forward to reading more from Ms James.

Having been suffering from a reading slump again, I didn't expect to fly through this book as I did. This book has definitely gotten me out of my reading slump.
As cliché and actually unrealistic as this story was at times, it was so heartwarming most of the times and although it is about the lockdown situation and COVID-19, I could really dream away with it. It contains such a positive message and warmed my heart. The praise to essential workers is really heartwarming and it's lovely that it is highlighted so much in this story. Aswell as the attention to people helping people.

Jack and Sophia are such loveable characters, aswell as all the side characters. They all have their quirks and it is all worked out so well into the story.

I'm sad the ending was quite abrupt, as I would've loved hearing more about Jack and Sophia after the lockdown situation.

Overall, Chloe James did an amazing job creating such a beautiful story out of such a bizarre situation.

Utterly charming. This was just the book I needed to read. Warm, funny likeable characters who epitomised most of us and how we have felt this year during lockdown. Some parts were lighthearted, and some were painfully poignant. This book really showed how valuable family and friends are when there are restrictions and how communities can cone together to look after each other. I loved it!

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

This is a gorgeous romantic story from both viewpoints - classic modern English romance lit. Every time I read one of these though, the man is always really sensible and emotionally intelligent, so different to how a lot of men are. I haven't "dated" for some time though. At one point, I wrote in my notes, "Who is this unicorn?"

Jack and Soph live in the same block of flats (apartments) somewhere in England during lockdown early 2020 - Northern Hemisphere spring. So the weather's good but no one can go anywhere and there's a lot of talk about wartime spirit, etcetera.

She has epilepsy, was a lawyer, is now a teacher and was dumped by her lawyer fiancé within the last year, before the lockdown anyway. She's really nice, but to be honest, seems to be a bit of a doormat. I still can't work out why she does all her flatmate's ironing. She babbles incessantly, even to herself. My husband snorted at this as he says I do it too. Hmph.

Jack is an expert barman with a kidney disease and an estranged wife he met on holidays in Greece. He's come down from his Greek sojourn, but she has not. He also can't leave the flat while lockdown because of his kidney disease. And as I said above, he's very sensible and self-aware and unselfish. His home haircut scene is of particular amusement. He also becomes an uncle in the beginning of the book which is quite a lovely bit. I became a great-aunt for the second time during lockdown and it was quite emotional.

Somehow they get talking and because Soph is just lovely, she goes shopping for him, they both organise for everyone in the block to be in contact so if anyone needs help, they can just ask. There are some just wonderful side stories, which I love. Bertie's in particular made the whole book totally worth it and I would like a companion book to find out what happened there.

Really great little read and I cried, several times, but I like romances and needed cheering up.

I was a bit surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. It was an interesting read. Sophia and Jack were neighbors unknown to each other until lockdown made them friends from afar. What I thought was interesting was the alternating POV and their individual story. I couldn’t help but wonder how they will find love without seeing the other person. Can someone find love without seeing their face? Such an interesting topic. Aside from Sophia and Jack we meet their neighbors and family members. The side characters were wonderful, humorous, and adorable. There was a lot of funny scenes that made me laugh out loud. Especially the children that Sophia taught. Ah, such cuteness! Overall, a very cute and sweet story.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Love in Lockdown was a pretty cute book. In it, you will meet Sophia and Jack. Now these two live in the same building but have never met. Which, yeah, I can see that happening. I currently live in a condo and I don't think I've even seen or met all my neighbors. I've been there for 3 years lol.

Jack, like me, is a high-risk person when it comes to the COVID virus. So Sophia helps him out with groceries and other stuff. Kind of like what my family did for me - all the grocery shopping. Heck, they are still doing it for me. I think since the pandemic I've probably gone to the grocery store myself ONCE. That's it.

It was Target.. and I also got the flu shot lol.

I honestly really enjoyed how this book dove into so many topics that were relatable when it comes to the pandemic/quarantining. The only thing that bored me was when we dove into the WhatsApp stuff just because I didn't really need all of that. Personally.

In the end, the romance was okay but I wasn't completely invested.

Sophia and Jack live in the same building but they never know each other. He live right above her and one day he heard her crying and strike out a conversation. Since that day, they start talking to each other like a daily ritual. They share drinks, food and stories. But goshhh I don't understand why she never look up or he never look down to look at each other face lol

I like Sophia and Jack. They wanted to do everything they can to help everyone around them who need help and support during the lockdown. It was a hard time for everyone including them.

I like all the side characters too. They seems fun to be around. Ohhh and I like Jess, Sophia's sister virtual wedding. It was funny and cute lol

Thank you Netgalley, publisher and author for Love In Lockdown ARC!

This one definitely brought me memories from the first lockdown and how this all was. I got to be one of those people working from home and also being the designated person leaving the house for any needed task! Getting to listen about Sophia and Jack and how they were affected was somewhat emotional. Especially because of the bond that was created between them, but also because of the fact that they did all they could to bring their small community together, to care for each other and get to know people that lived in so close to them, but they never had encountered before.

It was an enjoyable, very optimistic and lighthearted read.

Omg this book came too early for me if you know what I mean? I mean we Are still under a serious pandemic and some of us Are still under lockdown.. the book felt rushed and for me it did not have depth. . Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
