This sequence was written in 1967 after a year's visit to England on a Guggenheim Fellowship, when the author was completing his edition of the letters of John Addington Symonds. Robert Peters' books of poetry are `Songs for a Son' (Norton, 1967), `Pioneers of Modern Poetry', with George Hitchcock (Kayak, 1967) and `The Sow's Head' (Wayne State, 1968).
Read for the Sealey Challenge. This is a short and stark volume of poetry with occasional flourishes that I was surprised by. I picked it up in a second hand store with the idea that I would need short volumes for days that I was working during the challenge.
Left me with a mood and a strong sense of place which I suppose is what I could hope for from a set of poems about a visit somewhere. I possibly give too many 4s but I rarely buy books I don't think I will like.
