Serial Episodes of a book. Just like an old television show. It is how I am reading this story. Loving the concept.
Be forewarned the beginning chapters can be extremely disturbing!! However, the intensity is unreal and can draw you in fast.
I will be honest here. If I had not read something else by this author, I am not sure I would have continued reading this episode. However, this is a mystery and I am intrigued by the serial concept of the story and delivery to us. I know I plan to read it as such. I am looking forward to that.
It starts with a murder obviously, then we get to meet the police team. Is there a surprise waiting for us there? Will need ore to see if that hint is correct. This episode will end with a foreshadowing of what we can possibly expect in the next episode.
Short episode that can easily be read in a day. Definitely not a cozy mystery for those who like cozy mysteries. Since first definitely a standalone.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
This is the first of six separate episodes in the second series of the DC Jake Tanner CID case files, The Community, told like a TV series. In the first episode of the second series, Jake Tanner is still a rookie detective, looking to find his place in the Major Investigation Team (MIT) at Stratford Police Station in Bow Green, part of the Metropolitan Police Force. He can’t quite make out what his team leader DCI Liam Greene wants or expects from him. So when news of a new case hits, he volunteers himself to go along with DCI Greene and DCI Hamilton from the Missing Persons team.
The new case is a rather gory affair, with a husband and wife, Steven and Jessica Arnholt, found dead in a basement room below their art gallery. It seems the couple have a somewhat adventurous love life and had invited a third to their evening of pleasure. It was all part of a community of like-minded people, gaining points for their activities. When his wife wasn’t eager to be submissive to their visitor, as she found him repulsive, her dominant husband forced her to go ahead, as he had a plan to take care of their guest!
Only problem is that their guest overheard them and takes his own revenge on them, having his wildest fantasies come true. He leaves the couple brutally murdered and with their libs removed from their bodies! The wife’s body has the word ‘Liar’ inscribed on her chest. There is a reason this has been put there, but the act has just wet the appetite of the killer to do this again. He had fantasies for a long time about what he wanted to do to Jessica and now he is hunting for other women, also called Jessica, to carry out his sick desires. Jack will be pushed to his limit to solve this initial crime, with increased pressure from his superiors, who are keeping something secret from him. They want the case to go away quietly, but that isn’t what Jake is about nor something he can condone, but if he wants to fit in with the team, how far will he go against his own morals and standards?
Just the first episode of this next instalment in Jake Tanner’s life as a police detective in the Metropolitan Police. He is faced with more horror than he has ever seen before, but knows this type of thing is what he may have to get used to. What is harder still, is to try and mix with his colleagues and work to fit in with the team and especially his superiors. The position is something he has worked hard for, but it may be more than he handle. More episodes to follow in this series and I look forward to seeing what happens next and how Jake copes. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Although “The Community” was raw, brutal and heart-wrenching; if you read “The Conspiracy”, the first book in the series, you would noticed that the author made some mistakes with the details. Not wanting to give away the plot, I can’t say what the mistakes were; but they are noticeable. Getting back to “The Community”, it is a story about U.K. Detective Constable Jake Tanner and his transfer to a new unit, his relationship with the new team while still on probation and his coming to terms with a solved case from his previous station house. On top of all that, he has to catch a serial killer. As for me, I despised his co-workers. Almost everything they did towards Tanner had a corrupt motive. They had no redeeming qualities and were written as if they couldn’t solve their way out of a paper bag. I liked Tanner, but felt he was too rapped up in trying to fit in with his idiot co-workers and his solved case with “The Crimsons”. The serial killings took a backseat to this nonsense and was only an afterthought. The killer literally got away with murders. It was the U.K.’s version of “The Choirboys “. I would however still read the series because of Tanner. He’s a good guy with no help. I want to see if he succumbs to the pressure. Honestly, I don’t think he’ll make it. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.
I've received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the author - in return for my unbiased review.
Wow - it got off to a eye-popping start! Jack Probyn didn't pull any punches with the beginning of this particular book.
Not QUITE what I'm used to reading, but it certainly set the scene for the investigation that was to follow.
Another cracking Jake Tanner story from Jack Probyn. I'm enjoying getting to know this straightforward cop - with his honesty AND his flaws.
As this is Episode 1 - and it's been written in the style of a TV Series over 6 Episodes - this starts with the introduction of various members of the storyline .................. the initial victims .................... their murderer ................... the members of the Police Force who are investigating the murder ........................ and other characters who are driving the storyline.
I'm looking forward to reading how this pans out - what else the author has up his sleeve for us as the story twists and turns.
Jack Probyn - AND Jake Tanner - have never disappointed me yet :-).
Jake Tanner is back as a freshly minted detective with the Metropolitan Police's Major Investigation Team and they don't seem to like him any more than the officers at his last assignment. Why is that? Well, Jake has problems. He suffers from anxiety, has panic attacks and doesn't really seem to care very much for anyone outside of his immediate family. He's not your average lead character in crime thriller. He's out of shape, has difficulties socializing and tries too hard at everything. And, he's an honest cop in the midst of a very dishonest division. Throw in a dark web sex ring, a corrupted system and a perverted voyeur. What can go wrong?
This is book 2 in the Jake Tanner series. It is much more darkly disturbing (torture, rape, necrophilia, cannibalism) than the first book, and is meant for readers who can handle disquieting narrative. The author has a vivid imagination and doesn't mind sharing.
I received a copy of the book from the author. The honest review is all my own.
Sex (as strange as the kind this group paratakes in), murder, mystery, and mayhem!
Got your attention yet?
Jake Tanner has transferred to a new (to him) Unit and finds the others a very close-knit bunch, which makes it difficult for him to become one of the boys.
All might not be as it seems, as the reader quickly wonders if the "good guys" are all that good or if something is going on behind the scenes.
This is Episode # 1 in the new Serial series (think Line of Duty and other TV shows where each episode picks up where the previous one leaves off), which has 6 episodes to work your way through to the conclusion.
Difficult to put down (in spite of the horrendous murders), and the plot twists will definitely keep you reading!
Highly recommend this and hope you enjoy it (and the rest of the series) as much as I am!!!
After a pair of sexually-related, brutal murders come to the attention of the Major Investigation Team in Stratford, Jake Tanner, newly assigned, determines to become more involved in the investigation. In doing so, he hopes to earn the respect of the team's more experienced officers. They look upon Jake's ambition in a less than enthusiastic manner. It seems that there are hidden currents in the team's operations. Jake learns that some scenes are not as pretty as he imagined. To add to the confusion, Jake's wife, Elizabeth, is in the final stages of their second pregnancy. Will the murderer strike again?
Everyone loves a good British procedural right? I definitely do and the world of Jake Tanner is incredibly enjoyable. It’s truly hard to review this one without giving too many spoilers away because it’s the second in a series so if you’re interested, pick up The Conspiracy first (it’s good too so don’t worry about being let down). It can be read as a standalone, but you’d be much better off reading the the first one.
The way Jack Probyn writes, especially in The Community, made me feel like I was watching a movie, not reading a book. Every word I could visualize in such an amazing way and it was so much more enjoyable that I really felt like I was a fly on the wall.
Actual review would be a 3.75. Thank you to Jack Probyn, Cliff Edge Publishing and Netgalley for my free copy in exchange for a review!
Really enjoying the Jake Tanner series .I started off by reading the two terriosm ones Standstill and floor 68!.These hooked me so have now started this series and just finished this the second book and was not disappointed by a long shot . Jake is on a mission to prove himself to his new team and catch a very nasrty serial killer who's kills get worse each time ..Jake is playing a deadly game of cat and mouse but who will win Definately worth a read really enjoyed it and found it hard to put down.
Wow Just wow! The community starts off with a bang and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Can't wait to start Episode 2. Jake Tanner is back at a new job with MIT and he is getting used to the people he is working with. The suspense is off the charts. I would highly recommend it. I received this booka s an ARC and this is my honest review.
A dark disturbing and alluring storey of S&M ,bondage and murder. Caracters that are so vibrant, so intreageing you have but no choice to fallow the twisted tail wanting to know more of what's behind each and every caracter. What is truly at the depth of it all. Aquier a copy of "The Community ": Episode 1 (CID Case # 7) read it if you dare, not for the faint of heart. Kat
This is my first time reading anything from this author and he certainly knows how to grab a reader’s attention! This book is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s quite dark and gory, which to me makes for a delightful read. Looking forward to more.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
What a storyline....Jack is involved with this unbelievable case. A couple are found in their basement stabbed, dismembered and the word Liar written with a knife on her stomach. Unfortunately they aren't the only deaths in this fabulous book. The list keeps on growing. How will they find this sadistic killer. Enter Jack Tanner!!
I determined not to continue reading after completing the opening chapters of "Community." The plot between Steven and Jessica was evil, but Lester's acts are downright evil. Jake is a redeeming character, but is at a disadvantage when unscrupulous men are part of his team. How will he negotiate the maze of challenges confronting him?
Part 1 gets your interest from the beginning. Steven and Jessica Arnholt have a sex equipment room and entertain guests. A gentleman returns for more and the Arnholt's end up dead. Jake returns to help investigate, but the murder scene is quite macabre. Episode 1 ends leaving you wanting more
I found this book sickening, and DC Jake Tanner very naive and immature for a detective in homicide . To me it was not believable, it was obvious the author had researched bondage. But the story he created around this did not ring true, for me.
Fantastic read, characters and storyline. Once I started the book I didn’t want to put it down. DC Jake Tanner started helping the police force find a serial killer. A definite must read. So much going on it’s hard to stop
Edge of your seat book, moving so fast, you can't put it down! This book is definitely a horror, and the suspense keeps you turning the pages right to the end!!!!!
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book. I don't care much for graphic novels. This one pulled me in, with a great story line. The psychology behind the story. I really enjoyed the whole thing.
Just read the second in the series and OMG I could not put it down. All the twists and turns kept me glued to both books. Must go reading the last in the series.
A naive ,inexperienced police officer is faced not only with kidnapping, murder and burglary but also faces possible corruption at his station. Very intriguing.
Good plot if somewhat gory in parts. The sub plot continues to lay the path of the corrupt officers within the Met Police and give an indication as to just how far reaching the tentacles are.
