In a town still reeling from the witch trials of Salem the year before and nursing wounds of wars past, a young girl endures the lonely grip of an abusive home. However, with an unlikely group of feathered friends she learns to find her find strength and joy, but will this be enough to save her soul? As a tragic historical fiction piece this short story details the effects fear has when it over takes people, on both an individual and societal level. It highlights the often violent turn unchecked terror brings by scapegoating "the other" with the events of both the witch trials of Salem and the atrocities of Deer Island. The Unkindness is a quick read that takes you on a journey through the complexity of emotions and dynamics of relationships.
This story broke my heart and put it back together. And left me wanting more. This was an interesting take on the time when America was still in it's infancy and ruled by religion and fear. It definitely had a taste of allegory, but also just enough magic to keep you wanting more. Bravo for The Unkindness!
I would recommend this short story to all my friends. I always enjoy a message or guide to living. I never thought about how fear could over take the goodness in most people. History just keeps repeating it’s self and fear of what we don’t understand causes way too much pain.
Great storyline Noah! I just read this very quickly and I have to say that it drew me right in. When I reach the ending (which I didn’t realize was coming,) I turned the page and saw it was over and my stomach dropped. I want more! Keep on writing!!
