I loved this. It's probably my favorite Tara Lain ever now. I've always been drawn to stories where one MC is on the slow side (ala "Tim" my Colleen McCollough and "Simple Jess" by Pamela Morsi). This story has that type of character, and it's not easy to deal with it as a writer, but Tara does a wonderful job. It's just such a feel good hurt/comfort story. Loved every minute of it!

I wanted to give this book a higher rating because I really liked Tom, he was such a sweet character.
but there was a separation that I found too long and for dumb reasons. Some of drama was very OTT and I rolled my eyes a bit.

Opposites attract, Laguna, CA. Partying with friends Ru, Gray, Billy, and Shaz, Merle wandered off to take in the quiet beach, where he's suddenly surrounded by four gay-bashers who began beating him. He thought he might be taking his last breath, when a giant of a man, showed up and saved him.
Next day on the work site, Merle is touring his new home being built, and there is his savior, hanging lights.
Tom, 6'6", is a "simple" man, with extraordinary talent

in construction and a sweet soul. Brown hair, muscles on muscles, and a dimpled smile with blue eyes, is a tender soul. Tom sends his money to his folks, so they take care of his younger sister, plus he works at the dog shelter, too. He keeps his two small dogs at the house where he rents a room from a nice older lady.

Merle is a TV star on a vampire show, with blonde wavy

longish hair and handsome. He's intrigued about Tom.

At a dinner with friends, he meets a movie director, who wants Merle for a film.

Meanwhile, our MCs share lunch, go to the shelter, Tom goes to the studio filming, dancing, and lots more. Tom and Merle begin a hot and heavy sexual relationship, surprising, sizzling, and meaningful. Their emotions are involved.

Our characters are complicated and yet it is simple enough. Their feeling are real, but how can they work when Merle will be away filming a movie? There is a twist with Tom's sister, Lily.

Mist....

We see Rene, the film director, the dog emergency, folks misconceptions of Tom, and Merle's realizations. Merle shows his devotion in a big way.

The wrap up is heartwarming, exciting, sexy, and full of promise.
Wonderful.
ENJOY !

I'm thinking this may be my favorite of the series so far. Love, love Merle and Tom...and the dogs! ;)

***
Tara Lain's Love in Laguna series is a favorite of mine. Lain always delivers a meaty story along with a touching romance. And all the characters thus far are friends (or become friends) so I always get to check-in with them. Fool of Main Beach delivers on all counts and then some. Here are some highlights from all the goody-goodness:

~Merle
He's an actor and a really good guy. He's handsome and charming but also down-to-earth, which means he isn't so fond of all the Hollywood hoopla. His family, while completely accepting of his sexuality, isn't so accepting of his career choice seeing as they're more of the intellectual type. This affects Merle's self-esteem as he wants to be taken seriously and he wants their respect. When he's given the chance at those things, he has to decide whether he wants others' respect or to be able to respect himself.
~Tom
Oh my gosh did I adore this man! He's described once as guileless and that's a fair description. He's really smart but has some learning disabilities. He also is open and honest, not understanding social cues or following social etiquette when offering his opinions. Tom's hardworking and loyal to a fault, taking care of his family despite them kicking him out at 15 because of his sexuality.
~Character Development
Both Merle and Tom grow over the course of the story. Tom learns to stand up to his parents and speak up for himself. But Merle does the most growing, learning that he deserves happiness in life whether others approve or respect his choices or not.
~Social Commentary
This is an element I love in Lain's stories - religion and sexuality, bigotry, homophobia...I admire that she weaves it into her stories (without brow-beating) because it's a reality.
~Tom (yes, again)
I was a bit worried over how Tom would be handled. As I said, he's guileless, but considered "simple" by some of the characters and he's anything but simple. His character had to be handled "just right" in my opinion to make the story work and Lain handled him with aplomb.
~Dogs
I would be remiss if I didn't mention the dogs. Tom volunteers at an animal shelter and is particularly fond of dogs. As a dog lover myself, I felt a strong affinity for Tom because of his love and care for these animals and Lain did a nice job giving the dogs their own personalities.

In the end, this might have moved into the top spot as my favorite in this series so far!

This was a sweet romance and while it slows somewhat in the middle with a frustrating separation, it (thankfully) picks up again quickly. Overall I loved K.C. Kelly's narration and really thought he did well and had a good handle on the many different character voices and was able to convey the emotions of many scenes without going over the top. Told in Merle and Tom's dual POV, this is sweet without being excessive. Just a nice, low angst, sexy, romance with a lovely HEA.

My only complaint about the narration was the (to me) mispronunciation of the car brand Audi. I've always been taught it's pronounced "ow-dee" and Kelly kept pronouncing it "awe-dee". Perhaps that's a regional pronunciation? Regardless, fans of the series should enjoy getting to spend time with the casts from some of the other books in the series who make appearances and even play more supportive roles to help Merle and Tom along in their romance.

Though this is the fifth book in the series, it can absolutely be read/listened to as a standalone.

I reaaaaallyyyy liked Tom! He's an epitome of sweet, honest, pure and angel in a human form.
Merle couldn't be luckier having him rescued that night.
And Tom love sex, yeah you hear me. He loved sex and never shy for asking Merle for it.

I felt like Tara did a really good job wrote about Tom.
It's like I'd seen Billy all over again. Big honest, not too smart but lovable and all I want is taking him home and protected him from the cruel world.

Some stupid thing along the journey to find love of course happened. And I was kinda wanted to slap some people in their face. But all ended well in the end.

Tom and his boys were definitely entertaining and well, Merle had to do some incredible move to deserve him. Fair trade.

If you're following this series from the start, this one need your attention.
This can be read as a stand alone, but I think you better read the series in order, just to get to know their stories, especially my favorite, Billy and Shaz <3

I only picked this one because it was on the right list for BINGO, so imagine my surprise when I actually liked it a lot! LOVED Tom & Merle together, and Tom was so sweet, so caring and he completely stole my heart.

Part way through I realized I skipped Book 4 but I don't think it mattered.

Note: This audiobook was provided to me through Hearts on Fire Reviews in exchange for an impartial review.

I liked the concept of this story in which Merle, a friend of actor Gray Anson, whom we met in Prince of the Playhouse, is attending a party at Gray’s house. When he wanders off down the beach, he’s confronted by gay-bashers and ultimately rescued by a big, cute guy wearing a puffy pink jacket. The guy, Tom, is a sweetheart but appears to be slow, aka dim-witted, in the way he speaks his mind without worry of how it sounds to others. Merle is attracted to him but is also wary of how being with this guy, might affect his career. He’s just met a film director who may want him for a role and that would be a step above the TV show he’s currently acting in. If the way the director looked at him is any indication, he’d better not starting anything with Tom.

But he doesn’t click with the director, except as friends, and over time, he and Tom become lovers. But it’s just sex—or at least it is for Merle. He refuses to admit his heart is involved. Through Tom, he learns more about being true to oneself, family responsibility, and the love of a good pet. Yes, Tom volunteers for a pet shelter—true to his loving and giving personality. After even more time goes by, they end up in a subplot with Tom’s sister and her dastardly parents and then an additional secondary plot involving Merle’s acceptance by his own parents comes into play. Thankfully, they ultimately find their way to romance, love, and a HEA.

Although the story was sweet, as is typical with Tara Lain books, it felt way too long. I was listening to the audiobook and constantly surprised by how much more time was left than I expected. These two MCs questioned their judgment about each other for a total of 9 hours and 17 minutes. To me, it felt somewhat like the secondary issues were expanded just to make the word count higher. And KC Kelly is not a narrator I can tolerate for that length of time. I find his vocalizations of gay men to be too campy and demeaning, and his delivery of sentences too frequently done without a pause at a comma or period. I want to like him. I really do, since so many of my audiobook-reading friends recommend him, but I just haven’t found the right story yet, I guess. This one was not it.

If you like sweet romance stories with a gentle giant MC, this is a good one to try. But I recommend the e-book format.

Merle is so freaking detestable. For God sake he was litterally telling Tom that he wished he could have any choice but to be with him but that he just couldn’t help « Loving » him even if that meant chosing happiness instead of success. Meaning Tom is going to hinder your chances at success, Merle? Wow, that’s so romantic 🙄.

Also is everyone just going to be okay with René’s behavior towards Merle? I’ve rarely encountered such a sleazy character in a book, yet everyone seems to think he is a swell guy. I felt like he was a pathetic horny bastard with predatory tendencies.

So yeah, this book was pretty disappointing.

'Love in Laguna' has definitely been a hit and miss series for me. The first four books have garnered anything between 2 and even 5 stars as a rating from me.

'Fool of Main Beach' just had too many things that appealed to me, so when the chance came along to check out the audio book and the narrator was an 'almost' new to me narrator...K. C. Kelly, whom I've only heard narrate one other audio book. I decided I needed to go for it...so we're heading for Laguna Beach and the men who live there.

So let's start with what I love...

First off this is one of those series where we get a different couple for each book but we also get to re-visit the men from the previous books so the new and the familiar...one of my favorite things.

Dogs...lots and lots of dogs...come on we all know dogs make everything better and this one has dogs in spades.

Totally unlikely MCs...I love it when an author takes 2 characters who on paper are just never going to happen...they have nothing in common, their connection defies the obvious.

Diverse and interesting secondary characters...this one has those in spades from the collection of acting industry people to Merle's family to Tom's family and let's not forget the men from the previous stories.

Most of all I quickly discovered that what I loved the most about this book was Merle and Tom...but especially Tom. I'm not even sure how to explain Tom and all the feelz I have for him. Truly we would all be better people for having a Tom in our lives. Tom is sweet and honest....so guileless and absolutely so much more than he appeared to be. Tom would be the kind of friend that anyone with a brain would treasure and that any parent worthy of the name would cherish and be humbled for having played a part in gifting the world with.

Ok, let's move on to Merle because honestly I could probably wax poetic about Tom and why I love him all day but I think I've made my point Tom is awesome but in his own way so was Merle.

Merle is the star of a television show and he aspires to star in movies but more importantly Merle is at his heart an sweet and gentle soul looking for the right person to love him. It just takes him a bit of time to realize that finding the right person to love him means looking not at the package but at what lies inside...although it might not hurt that Tom is also very nicely packaged...he's big...as in tall with all kinds of lovely ripped muscles and the face of an angel and he thinks that Merle is so beautiful and talented.

I loved that no matter where things were at between these two men if one of them needed help the other one dropped everything to get to them as soon as possible. I loved how Merle saw and never lost site of Tom...not the superficial that people saw at first glance but the man who saw the world just a little differently from others and whose honesty is both guileless and refreshing.

Merle and Tom are in many ways as unlikely a pairing as a person could imagine and their story from when they are brought together when Tom first rescues Merle from an act of bigotry and hatred. As they become friends then friends with benefits continuing to rescue each other, Tom and Merle find their lives becoming increasingly entangled and yet in spite of the fact that both claim a relationship between them would never work, neither of them is willing to truly give up the other.

I really enjoyed listening to this story on audio. K.C. Kelly's narration was well done and really added to my enjoyment of the characters and the story in general and easily ticked off those boxes in my 'things I look for from an audio book' list.

'Fool of Main Beach' is a sweet, feel good, hurt/comfort romance that at times had me laughing and there may have been a tear or two as well and without a doubt this is one of my favorites from this series.

Tara writes her stories to make you smile. I always enjoy the way she writes her characters. They are serious when they have to be but can also make you laugh and smile.
I loved the premise of this story. The characters are both loveable from the start especially Tom. He is so naïve that you just want to put him in a bubble and protect him from the real world changing him.
This is sweet, heart-warming romance story about two opposites who find love and acceptance with each other.
Merle is a actor on a popular teeny bopper show but he wants more. He thinks all he will ever be is an OK actor.
You are not sure what to make of Tom at first. He comes across as slow but you will find he isn't, just not very good at reading. He is a hard worker and loves his animals. His friends know that he always tells the truth and that is what they love about him, he wasn't jaded by his life.
When Tom saves Merle from being attacked they become friends. Merle finds himself attracted to Tom. Merle is attracted to his looks but also his personality. He finds Tom a breathe of fresh air in his world of Hollywood.
Tara builds their story slowly but it really works. You get to know both men and how they get along before they jump into bed together. But when they do , it is a great scene to read.
The only thing I want to say is that I found it hard to follow who was talking at what time. It switched from Tom and Merle without really a pause. I think I would have liked it if Tara did it by chapters.
Both Merle and Tom want more from each other but are afraid to go for it at first. Tom wears his heart on his sleeve but it takes Merle longer to figure out that Tom is it for him.
I really enjoyed this story and Tom's sister was a hoot to read.
This to me is truly a love story you must read.....

When I saw Tara had written another Laguna story, I was very excited and couldn't wait. I was even happier when she offered ARCs to her reader group on Facebook, and I was able to get one.

Though I really enjoyed this, it wasn't my favorite. In this book, Merle, a TV actor, befriends and falls in love with Tom, one of Billy's employees. After working with Gray in the production of Hamlet, Merle falls in love with Laguna and buys a house and hires Billy to renovate it. On the night of the Emmy's the Laguna crew throws a party for Merle, who's been nominated. He escapes to the beach where Tom saves him from some homophobic a-holes intent on doing him harm, or worse.

They meet up the next day at his house, and have an instant connection. They become friends with benefits, but are both afraid to ask for more. Tom has low self esteem after being kicked out at 15 for being gay, and while intelligent, he is a little slow. He wants Merle, but pushes him away. Merle likes Tom, but has another admirer in the business who he feels he should like more.

Eventually, with the help of Ru, Merle gets his head out of his ass and goes after what he wants before it's too late.

I enjoyed this, but the I felt the miscommunication went on too long, and Merle not being able to make up his mind over who he wanted also brought my enjoyment down a little.

I will say that if you love dogs, you will love this, as Tom is a dog lover and there is a side plot that involves some dogs.

While this is the fifth book in the series, it could stand alone, but I would recommend reading Prince of the Playhouse first, where you are introduced to Merle and Ru and Gray. Since Billy and Shaz make appearances, you might also want to read their book, Knight of Ocean Avenue also.

This book definitely follows in the fun stories I've come to expect from Ms. Lain.  Merle Justice is a young actor trying to get recognition in Hollywood, which is hard since he plays a teenage vampire on a hit show.  Actors in those roles aren't seen seriously and he's struggling to reconcile those two sides of his career.

The complications between Tom and Merle were more than just being from different sides of the social spectrum.  Tom is a very simple kinda guy.  He may not be the brightest guy around, but there's an innocence about him that is ultimately what is most appealing about him.  Draws you in because you can't help but want to be around him.  Merle can't stay away but knows that Hollywood can be ruthless and he may be bringing Tom into situations that are more than he is prepared to deal with.

It was refreshing to see a character like Tom because he's not the typical romance hero.  He is the kind of hero you want to keep wrapped up in protective bubble wrap so the world can't hurt him, but at the same time he's big enough to protect you from it.  He's sensitive but when he gives his heart, he does so completely.  And boy, does he love sex. ;)  He was my favorite thing about this story for sure.

I think Merle and Tom where really adorable together.  They had great chemistry and I found them so charming.  FOOL OF MAIN BEACH is definitely a feel-good, heart warming romance.  I think the conflict could've been a little better but the story still made sense the way the author presented it and it was enjoyable to read.

4-⭐

This is my second novel from Tara Lain and it grabbed me in but I still have many niggles. Tom is adorable and probaly the main reason why this book is good. And I can completely understand Merle's worries as they were not inconsequential, but it still felt to me that it took way too long for him to actually get to a decision and he gave too much weight to those issues. I don't dislike Merle particularly, for he obviously had a lot of insecurities and was a people-pleaser, but he was definitely the stupid one in this book. I guess that's probably the point the author was making here.

The sex was very intercourse-centric, though otherwise pretty good. What I disliked more was the way Merle was almost reluctantly engaging some sexual activities with a person who he wasn't really attracted to. I get it, especially considering his character, but I don't like it. And the fact that both of these issues were also present on my first Tara Lain book, I'm really hoping it's not the usual pattern for her. Because there's something in her writing that pulls me in, and I'm hoping to find some treasures still.

There also seemed to be like 27 different gay couples in the book, probably from earlier novels from the series, and while I do think this book works as a standalone, all these other couples were a bit dizzying at first. Luckily most of them fade to the background and the supporting cast of this book gets easier to follow.

There's plenty of family drama and TV drama, and most of it is pretty interesting. I felt the epilogue was mostly unnecessary, and too perfect, too sugary - even for the somewhat OTT style this book has.

While this was a long whine, the truth is I liked a lot about this book and I will be reading another Tara Lain novel. If this story was compressed a bit and some minor changes made it could easily be a 4.5 star book.

This was truly an amazing story, at first look you might think it is about two people who are so different that they could not possible stay together. But if you look deeper, you will see it is about being true to yourself, not worrying about what other people will think and allowing yourself the opportunity to have an amazing person in your life. Merle Justice is an actor, in the Hollywood eye but not taken very seriously as he is a teenage heartthrob. Tom Henry is a gentle giant, he might come off as simple but he has a unique perspective on how he sees life. Attraction is instantaneous but both know they are from two different worlds. However, the heart wants what the heart wants. I loved seeing all the others in this series come together and play a part in this unique romance. True to real life, there were times when I wanted to smack Merle to make him see what was in front of him. I thought his struggle was well thought out and portrayed very realistically. My heart hurt for Tom, he was such a wonderful person and was truly a gift. His introduction into the Hollywood scene made me smile and reminded me that there is so much more to a person then just what you see. I love this whole series but this story had moved to the top.
I volunteered to read this story for my honest opinion.

Have you ever met a character that you just fall in love with from the beginning and want to protect. In this book I did. Tom from the very beginning captures the heart. He is so guileless and wonderful. His heart is open and giving even after all he has gone through. He is kind and caring. Open and flawed but also so sweet and honest. There are no pretenses with him. He is a little insecure due to his past and how people perceive him to be. To me he is smart, caring, honest and just so guileless and open that you are drawn to him from the beginning and when you see how protective those around him are you smile.

Merle is trying to find his way. He is a great character but he is a little lost.He is kind and caring but wants to gain his parents respect, go further in his career but also have a life and love. When Tom comes into his world you see that there is attraction once they are seen outside of the situation that brought them together the first time. He sees how insightful and guileless Tom is. He likes the honesty and lack of pretense that Tom has. Tom doesn’t try to hide and accepts himself the way he is. Tom is caring and understanding towards everyone even those who do not deserve it. For example his parents-they were horrible to him and yet he takes care of them and his sister at the expense of himself. His love for dogs is so adorable and precious that you just smile. Merle sees all this and falls for him. You see it even if Merle is confused by it and tries to fight it in the beginning. they both do really. They become friends and Tom changes Merle’s view on things. Things progress to more but both are afraid. Tom because he doesn’t feel good enough for Merle and Merle because of the weight of expectations he feels. He wants to get his parents to take his world seriously and garner their approval. In the end Merle learns though that it isn’t their approval he needs but love. He needs someone to share his life with and it doesn’t matter what others think. He has help coming to this conclusion-his friends help him see this as do some of his co-workers on the film he is doing. he shows this in his actions with Tom for he is always there for him. Tom fears as well and this adds to the indecision at times. What cements their love is when Merle fears for Tom and goes to help.

These two are wonderful together but also so amazing apart. They are going on so many journeys. Tom learns to trust himself and gains confidence. he gains strength from the acceptance he gets from Merle and his friends. Merle finds acceptance and support from Tom. He gets love and honesty from Tom. There is no expectations from Tom only support and unconditional kindness, acceptance, and love. They grow and learn from one another and fall in love. they battle many demons and grow into their own. They tell each other we love one another and tough if you don’t like it. they face their fears and come out on top.

the story is sweet, engaging and wonderful. You truly want to see them together for they just belong with each other. the angst level is low for they are just on a journey to each other and discovering where they belong and who they are. Tom captures you from the first moment he comes into the story and you just continue to fall more and more in love with him. Merle has you understand his struggles and want him to find his strength to let love be his guide. A wonderfully written entertaining story that just has you embrace the characters and their journey to finding love with each other with vigor and joy.

I received a copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads

3.5 Stars

I was highly anticipating Fool of Main Beach, enjoying the light & fluffy, stress-free series to decompress and put a smile on my face. This installment of the Love in Laguna series didn't disappoint, but a few things did make me slightly uncomfortable, one of which I used to push the boundaries of my thinking.

A major happy point is seeing past narrators grace the pages, for levity and added lightheartedness, with a dose of warmth in the heart.

Merle Justice- I've been waiting for his book since he overindulged w/drink books ago. The gay actor plays a teen heartthrob in a vampire tv series, on the cusp of critically acclaimed fame. No matter how many people he surrounds himself with- the previous narrators in the series -he's alone in a crowd. Merle tugged at my heartstrings.

Tom Henry is Sasquatch in a pink jacket- Merle's savior. He's kind, compassionate, understanding, protective, a volunteer, and a dog-lover, but also suffers from a lack of self-worth due to not being book-smart and because he's socially awkward (no filter, no true understanding of the trickery the majority of all people use in any given situation).

Together, the two guys made sense, adding opposing strengths to the relationship. But this was a romance that pushed the boundaries on my thinking. Not because I didn't think someone like Tom deserved Merle's love, but because I feared it not being enough in the future for Merle, as well as being taken advantage of. I realize this is fiction, and I applaud the author for writing a book that had me questioning my own mindset. It was difficult, because I was on the boundary of whether or not Tom was able to consent. I believed Merle and Tom loved one another, but the ease of which it would be to take advantage of Tom was a struggle, as well as fearing for situations in the future, which would no doubt come to pass if they were in reality.

I smiled with a warm heart. I laughed. I cried. But I couldn't pass out a 5-star, no matter the gamut my emotions ran. The angst between Merle and Tom felt a bit contrived, where a simple conversation would have cleared up any and all confusion- so no matter how much I enjoyed the couple and their journey, the push-pull of their romance felt forced.

The main reason was due to the over-the-top nature of the conflicts, the villainous characters were beyond anything in reality that it forced me to accept I was reading a book, instead of falling into it and escaping. Especially when I realized it was 75%+ of all females in the book (both mothers and the sister painted in a negative light, overbearing and abrasive or abusive- for the majority of the book, anyway) I would put my Kindle down and groan at the dialogue the 'bad' characters were saying, take a deep breath, and quickly read those portions as to not lose interest.

There was a lack of fluidity to the dialogue. In regards to Tom, it made sense due to how his mind functioned. But this flowed over into all dialogue, with choppy, short sentences, and everyone addressing everyone by name in most dialogue, even if they had greeted them already. Example made up off the top of my head, but a representation of what is on the pages during conversations: "Hi, Tom!" "Hi, Merle!" "Hi, Billy!" "How's it going, Tom?" "Great, Billy. How about you, Merle?" ... and so on, even when only two people were conversing, their names were used in the majority of all dialogue/interactions. I realize I'm being nitpicky, but this actually yanked me from the story. I probably wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been a pet-peeve of mine when watching old TV shows, where that is the norm, one where my family is always wondering how many times a specific character's name is said in each episode.

I'm thankful I read Fool of Main Beach, and felt Tara Lain did justice to a character who I was waiting to read his story- Merle Justice. I enjoyed opening my mind and meeting Tom, being refreshed by his innocence (if you remove the terror I felt, in reality knowing someone like him would be swallowed whole by the sharks in Hollywood) I highly recommend this series to MM romance fans, and do look forward to what is to come.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Fool of Main Beach (Love in Laguna #5) Tara Lain
1) I especially liked that though it is part of a series, this book stands very well on its own. Info from the other books is referenced, but effectively, without overly summarizing or depending upon that info to follow the plot of this story. The characters were very likable; what's more, I didn't like them all at first, but by the end, I had gotten to know the real people behind the actions, and that is quite rewarding as a reader. I appreciate that though character conflicts were resolved to satisfy the story, they were not all fully tied with a bow, which gives the story a certain realism. The epilogue ending did feel a little too good to be true in some ways, but it almost didn't matter because I wanted that extra cherry on top for these characters, and I ended up wondering happily about how their lives would further play out. Watching Tom inadvertently put idiots in their places just by being his unassuming, sweet self was lovely. Merle's narrative tone had me laughing outright at places; I don't know many authors who can use phrases like "the cockles of his balls" without distracting me from the mood! But the turns of phrase were very entertaining. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book!
2) Love the characters, setting, and plot.  Deeply invested in the series and it's characters.
3) So much in The Fool of Main Beach was a surprise. Tom Henry was unique and interesting. Merle Justice was a character it was easy to empathize with even though he wad a movie star. All around, this book was well done.

The strength of this story lies in the character depth of Merle and Tom. Merle is an actor starring in a vampire series on TV. Walking on the beach, he is accosted by gay bashers intent on beating him up. Enter Tom to the rescue. They meet again as Tom is working on Merle's new house and the attraction is almost immediate. Tom is a very big guy and an electrician with a reading disability that makes some people think of him as slow, though those who take the time to get to know him, know he's no dummy. Tom has a heart so big he helps support his teenage sister and rescues dogs from the pound.

Family matters and work schedules interrupt their budding romance and Tom has a hard time believing Merle could really be interested in him. The author did a great job of keeping the tension high as our guys worked out what they really wanted in life in spite of family pressures and their own doubts. Just loved this to pieces, highly recommend!

Oh, I liked this one! Tom was big and strong and sweet, and he loved the simple things in life. Merle is an up and coming actor, who's already getting disillusioned with the pratfalls of life in Hollywood. Tom is very lonely, and has a terrible family. I loved how they came together, but I did think that things went the melodrama route there at the end with Tom's family, and it was a bit too much for me when (only slight spoiler there about the movie.)

It was nice seeing previous couples in this series, and I'm hoping that Rene gets his own story soon!

Love Tara Lain's, "Love in Laguna" series and this book fits right in with her others in the series. You can't help but love Tom in this book and his dream of having TV hit star Merle Justice as his boyfriend.

The wonderful characters from the previous books are bought into this one and if you haven't read any of the others in this series it'll boost you to do so.

In general, I really like this author. However, in this case I think she didn't quite pull off the portrait of a charming innocent -- I felt like this poor guy was borderline mentally incapacitated and this made me feel like I was watching a bunch of predators circle a particularly juicy rabbit. It made me uncomfortable.

Rating 4.5*s

Fool of Main Beach is the fifth book in the Love in Laguna series by Tara Lain. It’s the first book in the series that I have read, but I can already tell you that it won’t be the last. I enjoyed the glimpses that I got into the lives of Merle’s friends, and I can’t wait to go back and read their stories. The Fool of Main Beach is a standalone book, and you don’t have to have read the other books in the series to thoroughly enjoy this one but reading the other books in the series could only enhance your reading experience. I can’t express how much I enjoy Tara Lain’s writing style and how loveable her characters are. I still haven’t read a book of hers yet that I haven’t loved.

Merle Justice is a TV actor looking to get his break in the movie industry. He’s the black sheep in a family of intellectuals. As a result, he doesn’t get a whole lot of support or respect for the success that he has gotten for his reoccurring role as a teenybopper vampire on TV. I also greatly enjoyed that for once the movie actor doesn’t have to hide the fact that he’s gay to be considered for the great movie roles. I also loved how down to earth Merle is and that he can’t stand how snobbish other actors are and is tired of dating them. He’s recently bought a house in Laguna to be close to his friends and is having one of his friends remodel it completely before he can move in. While waiting for that to be completed, he’s staying with his best friend Ru and his husband. When he’s nominated for best supporting actor for his TV series, his friends throw him a congratulations party even though he didn’t win. Needing some space from all of the well-wishers, he takes a walk on Main Beach and gets accosted by four homophobes. Things aren’t looking great until he’s saved by a Sasquatch-sized hero wearing a puffy pink coat with the innocent smile of an angel.

Tom Henry’s been on his own since he was fifteen when his parents told him to leave after finding out that he was gay and that he had no desire to be anything but gay. His parents are all about the church and appearances. He has a younger sister Lily that calls him when she needs something that requires money. Although, she does redeem herself throughout the book. Tom’s a certified electrician, and he works for Bill who happens to be Merle’s friend and doing the remodel on his house. I’m not sure how to describe Tom, I kept trying to categorize him throughout the book, and the best I can come up with is he reminds me of Forest Gump. He has that innocent, naive, always happy, believe the good in everybody, would never hurt a fly unless they were hurting one of his friends or family, always putting everybody else’s needs before his own, personality. At times I wanted to shake him especially when he would put himself down, but he was such a lovely character especially around his dogs and the dogs at the shelter that I couldn’t help but fall in love with him.

But will his tendency to put everybody else’s needs before his own come at the cost of what he wants most in the world or will he finally agree that sometimes it’s okay to be selfish in what you want?

*A copy of this book was provided for free by the author in exchange for an honest review.*

I LOVE TOM. Tom is amazing and everything that is kind and decent in the world. Sure he's "different" but different is not bad. Tom is sunshine and honestly I wish people were more like him. He's happy to just be himself. He loves dogs, and his sister. And then he meets Merle. Merle is an actor who just wants to be taken seriously. His family treats him like dirt because he's not an intellectual like them. He feels like the industry looks at him like a joke (they don't). And honestly, I struggled with him. He just seemed like such a "victim" in his own mind. He was dissatisfied but didn't really try and change anything. I didn't like his first reactions to Tom. And I still don't really understand the angst of why he couldn't be with Tom, it honestly felt like drama for drama's sake. I really didn't like the extra love interests, for either Tom or Merle, I wish the director had just stayed professional. (I hope he gets a book, would be interesting.) The turnaround with Merle's parents comes out of the blue and too sudden for my liking. I liked Tom's sister. She was great. The stuff with Tom's family made me angry right along with Merle, he was at his best when he was on Tom's side. I liked the way that was handled and wrapped up. They were despicable. I loved seeing the other guys from the series back. Ultimately I really loved this story because of Tom, I enjoyed seeing him get his happy ending. Merle was key to that, and he wasn't horrible, he just had his moments.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

When the star of a teen vampire show is rescued from a gay-bashing, he finds himself drawn to the rescuer he initially describes as a ‘Sasquatch’. Tom is a gentle and very simple man who can’t help but want more than a friendship with the beautiful TV star.

As the odd man out in a family of important academics, Merle has always felt unimportant and slightly embarrassed by his career as an actor. In some ways, this is his growing up story as he is forced to choose between a partner who will impress his parents and a partner who will make him happy. I loved Merle’s conflicted reaction to Tom. The man is gorgeous and sweet but also very simple and childlike. He’s a refreshing change from the scheming people Merle meets in Hollywood but Merle can’t bring himself to take advantage of someone so basically good.

I had a mixed reaction to Tom. I could appreciate Merle’s attraction. I couldn’t help but like Tom’s kind, gentle and loyal nature. But for me, true love is as cerebral as it is physical and emotional. I struggled to see the balance in Merle and Tom’s relationship - even the sex didn’t feel quite right. I couldn’t see Merle moving beyond his role as Tom’s saviour and possibly even his caregiver. This is one of the more thought provoking romances I can remember reading because the relationship between Merle and Tom poses some interesting questions.

This isn’t as fluffy as some of the ‘Balls’ and ‘Laguna’ books but it is fun and it’s a pretty light read. This is the fifth Laguna Beach story and I loved catching up with the characters from earlier books. Tom works for Billy. Merle wears Ru’s clothes, he acts with Grey and he lives in their spare bedroom. To fully follow this story, readers will want to start this series at the beginning. This has been a fun, easy series from the start and I have enjoyed each one of the unlikely pairings.

***Audio Review***

4.25 stars from me. As far as the story goes, I adored Tom right from the start and had to wonder whether Merle would be able to see clearly enough into his future that he could ignore everything anyone said about Tom being 'slow'...particularly Hollywood people, who are obviously not known for their kindness 😕. Luckily, he finally came to his senses and decided he would rather be with someone who made him happy and actually loved him 💜, than a hanger-on who was just there for the prestige and publicity. Nice to catch up with Billy and Chaz, and Ru and Gray, and Tom's sister Lily gradually grew on me, although Merle's parents were iffy and the Henrys were just appalling 😠.

The reason I've only given 4.25 stars is I had a problem with KC's narration unfortunately. I listened to the first story in the series Knight of Ocean Avenue, and loved the narration BUT I didn't care for his 'Ru' voice at all...it sounded like a constipated parrot, and put me off listening to Ru's story. Move on down the line, and we have both Chaz and Ru in this story and KC keeps muddling his voices up for the two of them. When Chaz is not on page, Ru gets his [Chaz's] 'voice' and when they're both in the same scene, Ru becomes the constipated parrot again 😉.

I received a copy to read and review for Wicked Reads

I really enjoy this series and this book was just as awesome as the previous books. You do not have to read all the books in the series but it would give you some background on other characters in this book. This story is about two totally different lifestyles crashing into each other and just working. Merle is a movie star and Tom is a blue collar worker. This was a heartwarming story. These two guys had it bad for each other and both thought the other deserved better. When Tom's sister joins the mix I thought the poop was going to hit the fan but she added to the story and helped knock some sense into these two lugs! Great story that made me shed a tear and melted my heart.

“Most good actors have a huge intelligence about the human condition and a real open heart to different kinds of people and behavior.” ~ Tim Robbins

For as long as he can remember, Merle Justice, of 'Fool of Main Beach' by Tara Lain, has wanted to be an actor, much to the dismay of his “intellectual” parents. Merle loves being able to express himself through different personalities, bringing the most he can to all of his characters. What he doesn't like is all the glitz, glamor, and guile associated with his profession. Until he meets Tom, he doesn't know that what he really needs is a “Fool”, someone who sees what most people can't.

Merle enjoys being an actor but is weary of the fake atmosphere in Hollywood. Visits with friends, like Ru and his husband, Gray, in Laguna Beach keep him sane. Merle enjoys his visits so much that he decides to have a custom house built nearby. During an after-awards party, Merle gets overwhelmed by having to be “on” all the time; he slips out for a walk on the beach. What he thinks will be a quiet moment ends up in a fight for his life; he is attacked by four men, determined to beat up the “fag”. Fortunately, Merle is rescued by a giant knight in a pink puffer, Tom, who wins Merle's everlasting gratitude. Even though Merle has seen his tough side, he also recognizes Tom's kindness and straightforwardness. Wistfully, they part, with Merle thinking that he may never see Tom again.

The next day, Merle goes to check out the construction on his new house and, low and behold, who is working there but his savior, Tom! Tom is delighted to discover that he's working on Merle's house and proudly shows him around. Although he's physically attracted to Tom, Merle realizes that Tom is unique and would never take advantage of his good nature. Tom surprises Merle when he comes on to him; Merle is not going turn him down. After the fantastic sex, Tom tells Merle that it was wonderful but that he doesn't expect anything to come of it. Merle doesn't know what to say. While on location for a new movie he's starring in, his feelings and appreciation for Tom continue to grow; he's reached the point of telling everyone who doesn't think they belong together to just deal with it. He can't wait to get back to Laguna to tell Tom how he feels, but what he doesn't know is that Tom has definitively decided it won't work. Tom doesn't want to hold Merle back and discontinues all communication between them.

It took me longer than usual to warm up to Tom until I understood what Tara is so brilliantly trying to convey. She uses the word fool, not in the way generally thought of, but as the wise fool or jester-like in the book ‘The Emperor's New Clothes.' The jester, in that story, tells the emperor that the new clothes he thinks he's wearing are no clothes at all! Tom is constantly underestimated. He says things that most wouldn't, without fear of recrimination. This is his special brand of wisdom. We should all be so “foolish”. Thanks again, Tara, for characters who break with traditional stereotypes, which makes them even more special

Allllll the stars. Ranks up with top for 2017!
I LOVED THIS!

Tom is sooooo freakin’ adorable and Merle is (almost) perfect for him!

There were so many times that I was absolutely BAWLING while I read this. Poor Tom had such a low opinion of himself and I was HATING Merle for not seeing how fabulous he was for such a long time! I was also furious with Tom’s sister and – the fact that I felt all those emotions so strongly goes to show just what a great job Tara Lain did!

I have to admit, it was a close call – Merle ALMOST didn’t make me love him. He’s pretty self-involved and I wasn’t ever as attached to him as I was to Tom – BUT – he does manage to see the light and make me believe that he’s good enough for Tom by the end. (However, if he’d done a bit more groveling this might have been a 6 star book ;) )

This book had me right from the start and I couldn’t put it down. I was totally invested in Tom’s happiness and I wanted to see him find his true love so badly! It was great seeing some of the previous MCs from the series – but this was Tom’s story (more than Merle’s) and for that it was perfect!

If you’re a fan of the series or new to it, you’re going to want to read this. For fans of hurt/comfort or books about people with disabilities I think this will absolutely make your day. I think Tara did a great job of not actually ever “labeling” Tom and yet it’s clear what his situation is.

Usually I’m not a “Hollywood/Actor” fan – and this was still amazing!

Highly recommended!

(I love the cover too!)
