When I was offered an arc of the final book of the Missing Children Case Files Series I jumped at it, having read the first four books. But I’d missed the fifth so I quickly grabbed it to get myself up to date before reading the final volume - Exposed.

In this story writer, Emma Hunter, is trying to finalise her latest book when she gets a call from her agent, Maddie. Maddie tells her about an awkward revelation that occurred at a dinner party she had been at the previous night where the conversation had turned to missing children and one of the guests referred to the ‘Brighton Rock Girl’ who was snatched 35 years ago (and found 2 years later) naming her as Zara Edwards. Zara was, reluctantly, at the dinner with her partner Tom and the revelation sent her fleeing the party. She hadn’t said anything about her past to Tom. Awkward!

Maddie arranges for Emma and Zara to meet and, while Zara is reluctant to revisit her past, she understands that to be fair to Tom who has unflinchingly supported her, she needs to address it as her nightmares are affecting both of them. There’s a lot more to it of course.

Meanwhile DC Jack Serrovitz and Emma are still working on trying to find out what happened to Emma’s sister who disappeared 21 years ago and to uncover a high powered paedophile ring. But is seems that someone is onto them and knows what they are up to as a disconcerting series of disasters befalls the small group of intrepid crime fighters. The first and most serious of these is a car crash that sends Jack into a coma. But that is just the beginning. Emma has a horrible feeling that all the incidents are related and that the people close to her are all in danger.

Someone in a position of power is pulling some strings and it reinforces their determination to bring the whole edifice crashing down. Her interest in Zara’s case relates to the thinking that maybe the man who snatched could be the same man who snatched her sister. I am certainly hoping we’ll get some answers in the sixth and final book, which I am about to start.

The Missing Children Case Files, Book 5

Twenty years ago, a girl was snatched from the Isle of Portland. Her name was Anna Hunter. Her sisters name world ground to a halt. Emma Hunter is now a best selling investigative journalist known internationally for a vigilante crusade to solve the missing children's cases ravaging the South of England. But it has always been about Anna. So when a new case lands on her desk, she doesn't hesitate. Because this one is different.

I was pulled into this story from the first few pages. Zara had been abducted thirty five years ago and she's now starting to remember what had happened to her. Zara had been missing for two years. As Emma gets closer to the truth, she's finding herself closer to danger. The plotline is intriguing but it covers some sensitive issues. I'm looking forward to reading the last book but I will also be sorry to see them end.

I would like to thank #NetGalley, #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter and the author #MAHunter for my ARC of #Repressed in exchange for an honest review.

Repressed by M.A Hunter is the fifth in The Missing Children Case Files series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Harper Collins UK (One More Chapter) and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Emma Hunter is an investigative journalist who is now a best-selling author. Her entire adult life has revolved around finding her sister who has been missing for over 20 years.  Between her friend and literary agent Maddie, and her best friend from college Rachel, Emma has a good support team, although she wishes they got along.    DC Jack Serrovitz has been helping her track down a pedophile ring, and they have recently discovered that a police official may be a part of this..... Emma's relationship with Jack is "strained".

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Zara Edwards was abducted when she was 9 years old.  She lived the next 2 years of her life in captivity.   She only escaped because a fire brought help.  That was 35 years ago, and Zara was never the same girl who left her family when she was 9.  Her memory of that time has never been good, but even her memory previous to her capture is not what it should be.

Zara is finally asking for help, but Emma isn't sure what she can do, or if Zara is really ready.

Aurélie Lebrun calls a meeting regarding Emma's publishing of her story, and there seems to be a problem.

Meanwhile, the work she and Jack have been doing in secret to confirm that the Metropolitan Police’s former commissioner Sir Anthony Tomlinson had a role in the pedophile ring is bringing some unexpected results, and things are getting dangerous.

Everything that Emma does is based on her desire to find Anna....will any of this bring her closer?

My Opinions:
Well, this series has been amazing, and I know the next book will be the final one, the culmination of Emma's work.  This book laid more groundwork, and the ending of this one is leading us to a rather fore-gone conclusion to the series.    None of these books should be read as stand-alone novels, although they are each good in their own way.  But together, they tell the bigger picture.  Please read them in order.

The story was told from different perspectives and time-lines, and I really enjoyed Zara's story, but I thought it ended rather weakly.

There were definitely some surprising moments in this book, and a fairly obvious cliff-hanger at the end.

The characters have grown with each book, and the overall story is good.  Each book focuses on a specific missing child, but each book also expands our knowledge of the pedophile ring that took Anna.  I am definitely looking forward to the final book!

Another great book in this brilliant series.
There’s one more book to go and I can’t wait to find out how it all ends.
Emma is asked to meet a woman who is struggling to cope 35 years after being held captive. Zara is not sure if she wants to speak to Emma but her partner thinks it will be a good idea.
Emma gives Zara her details for when she’s ready to talk but Emma has more pressing things to deal with like Jack being in a critical condition in hospital. He’s been run off the road but as he’s unconscious, no-one knows what happened.
Rachel is also in for a shock and Emma helps her deal with it.
The ending of this book sets things up for the final book in the series which I can’t wait to read.
This is a gripping read that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

I would like to thank Netgalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an advance copy of Repressed, the fifth novel to feature Weymouth based true crime author Emma Hunter.

Emma has published several accounts about the treatment of sex trafficked children from their own perspective and so it is to her that Zara Edwards turns for help when her memories of her ordeal 33 years ago start to emerge. Emma is not looking for another book, but information about the disappearance of her sister, Anna, twenty plus years ago. This is the investigation that drives her and it’s getting dangerous.

I enjoyed Repressed which is another page turning addition to the series. It is slightly different to the previous novels in that it doesn’t really add to Emma’s knowledge about the paedophile ring she suspects kidnapped Anna and, thankfully, it’s not as graphic or quite as dark about the abuse. Instead it concentrates on Zara’s torment and the repercussions of Emma’s investigation into the ring. It does, however, follow the same format of alternating timelines and voices, switching between both Emma and Zara in the present and Zara’s experiences as a captive.

The plot is interesting and has much to say about the influence of powerful people. I like a good conspiracy theory, but I’m not sure I bought this one, if only because paedophilia is a hot button subject nowadays and I don’t think they could get so many people involved in a coverup, although I’m prepared to be corrected on this point. I found Zara’s story moving and heartbreaking, but, to be honest, it seemed rather pointless in terms of crime fiction, flickering out with a whimper and adding nothing to the hunt for Anna. I liked the journey but this novel feels like a holding pattern in preparation for the final showdown in the next novel.

Despite these reservations Repressed is a good read.

We are close to getting all the answers. The plot is thickening, and the mood has changed. This book is different from the previous ones, as it in fact should be, so I don't mind. Until now we have followed cases of kids who are missing, but now we have the kid, alive and well, and in her forties. But is she who she says she is, and what happened to her when she was young?

The small unofficial team looking for the truth of who is behind these despicable things, and what happened to Anna, is getting close to the truth. They are getting so close to the truth that the criminals are getting nervous. Everyone involved in finding out the truth is getting hit in one way or another, and no one is safe.

I look at this series as I would watch a TV series of six episodes. It is one long story, and now I'm waiting for the big bang, the final episode. I absolutely adore the hero, Emma. Her persistence is admirable, and the fact that she never gives up, makes me feel proud of her. I can understand that she wants to find out the truth about what happened to her sister, but it is clear that she also cares about what happened to other missing children, and she wants to catch the evil culprits.

I believe and fear that everything she is about to do will take her into an even more dangerous thing, because the ending of this book showed that she is about to catch some powerful people, and naturally they are not happy about it. Even though Emma has gone through, and is still going through, heavy stuff in life, it warms my heart to see that the friends she now has gathered around her are there for her. They are being attacked because of their supporting roles. How many are willing to be a part of something like that?

Another excellent read in this superbly good series. I highly recommend this book, but keep in mind that this is a series that has to be read in order, otherwise you'll miss out on too much. M. A. Hunter is a talented author, and I wish this splendid series would go on forever, even though I know it won't. On the other hand I can't wait to read the final book in the series. As a final note... I think the author's name should be M. A. N. Hunter :)

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.

After the ending of the last book I had high hopes and expectations with this book and I wasn’t disappointed. I thought this was a very well written book that, like the previous books, pulled me in right from the start and held my attention all the way through. It has very likeable characters and an engaging plot line. Here Emma helps Zara who was abducted 35 years earlier and is starting to remember events from that time. The story moved from past to present so effortlessly and I had so much empathy for Zara, and at times her story really tugged at my emotions. The author writes of a difficult subject sensitively and without any graphic detail, allowing my imagination to fill the gaps. I found this to be a fast paced, thrilling read with an ending I did not expect or see coming! I love this series and can’t wait for everything to come to a final conclusion in the last book.

I didn't think it was possible but this series just keeps getting better. I love the way each individual story is woven into the ongoing mystery of what happened to Emma's sister. I burned the midnight oil reading this and I am desperately waiting for the next instalment even though I'm a bit devastated to learn that the author intends it to be the last in the series. Hopefully she will have some new ideas to keep her readers rapt.

Threads left dangling😕!

3.5🌟 stars
For me, this volume in M.A. Hunter's Missing Children Case series had a good amount of upheaval and action but not enough forward progress.

Its links to the previous characters and books in the series are actually quite concentrated in a nebulous, suspected group of well-connected high level traffickers that writer Emma Hunter wants to identify and bring to justice. Emma's continual interest in finding out what happened to her missing sister Anna and a few encounters with Aurelie Lebrun, a young French trafficking victim who was the main focus in Trafficked, the third book in the series also serve as links to earlier stories; I just did not find any of these threads moved the series' overarching story to a next level.

Concurrently with Emma getting drawn in to the mystery of an old case by a long-recovered yet still traumatized trafficking survivor named Zara Edwards, she finds herself, friends and colleagues experiencing accidents and mayhem right and left. This part of the plot was fast-moving and good, giving the story an atmosphere of menace and urgency. But several twists were introduced and then just dropped cold. One involving some new memories of Aurelie's left me baffled and quite unsatisfied. Why even bring it up?

As to Anna, the mystery of Emma's presumably abducted and trafficked sibling seems more of a teaser than a real plotline. Will the last book in the series provide answers regarding Anna? Who knows. I am certainly none the wiser after reading Repressed.

At this point I've read the most recent three books in the series and, yes, maybe I'll read the next to find out if all the open-ended questions get answered, but I'm not all that enamoured of the author dangling so many unresolved issues from one book to the next.

Thanks to Harper Collins UK/One More Chapter and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Repressed is the fifth book in The Missing Children Case Files, and it’s a series that’s not to be missed if you consider yourself to be a fan of crime thrillers. As we grow one book closer to learning the truth about Emma’s sister Anna’s disappearance as a child, the suspense is growing at every turn of the page. I should mention that this is a hard-hitting series that deals with some tough themes, trafficking, grooming and abuse, but the author shows great sensitivity and there aren’t any descriptions that are explicit.

The latest book tells Zara’s story, abducted as a nine years old, and found two years later. Thirty-five years later repressed memories surface, and with Emma’s help Zara hopes to find some closure. Emma believes Zara’s story hides clues to the identity of a high-ranking gang of pedophiles, as well as answers to her own sister’s disappearance. It’s clear that as Emma moves closer to the truth, she is in danger and this adds a sense of foreboding to the tale. This isn’t a fast-paced read by any means, but this isn’t a negative. The author teases the reader with titbits that could lead to what really happened to Anna.

As each book ends, the tension and suspense gain momentum, leaving you desperate for the next book in the series. The beauty of this series is the ongoing mystery surrounding Anna’s disappearance, Readers of this series are desperate to know what happened to her, is she dead? Has she made a new life for herself? Is she still a victim of trafficking? I have so many questions that I hope M A Hunter is going to answer in the last book in the series Exposed. Addictive, compelling and original, Repressed made for another excellent read. Highly recommended

Zara has spent her life running while staying perfectly still. Abducted as a nine-year-old and found alive two years later she has been hiding in plain sight ever since. Her nightmares are getting worse however, her boyfriend is desperate to find out why, and sleep has become a luxury. Unsure how long she'll be able to hold everything together Zara has no idea how to save herself but then she is introduced to Emma Hunter.

Emma is in a quandary, her investigation into the cold cases of missing children going back decades seems to have hit a brick wall, while her mum is hospital, more lost and bewildered than ever.  As she struggles to cope with what has happened it becomes very clear Emma has struck a nerve with someone desperate to keep their secrets hidden and everything she holds dear is in danger because of her.

This is the penultimate book in M A Hunter's brilliantly original series and although a little different is no less compelling, than the previous four installments. It still draws you in but because of what is happening to everyone involved right now rather than in the past. The main protagonists are moving forwards but seemingly without any idea of who is guiding them or what their motives are.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent series I shall be sad to see end. Although different in tone to its predecessors this book is still highly recommended

Zara went missing from a fireworks display when she was nine, two years later she was rescued from a burning building. She has tried to forget these events but when someone recognises her at a dinner party she is overwhelmed. Her loving boyfriend tries to persuade her to come to terms with her abduction by finding out more about it. Emma, having made something of a name for herself investigating lost children becomes involved.

I have been a fan of this series since the first book when we first meet Emma, scarred by the abduction of her sister Anna & tin telling the stories of abused children. Along with policeman Jack they have been investigating a paedophile ring involving powerful people in high places. Whereas usually they are searching for someone missing, this time Emma finds herself digging into something that happened long before Anna disappeared. At the same time the people who are close around her are being targeted. The focus of the books are changing as we approach the finale- something I am in two minds about. I really want to know what happened to Anna & there to be a satisfactory conclusion but I will really miss these characters I have grown to care about. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

Have always absolutely loved this series and this one did not disappoint. Having read the previous book I did wonder whether this one would tie up all the loose ends. Although we have been tantalised by further bits of information, the conclusion has not been reached yet.

Zara has been carrying a secret from her partner Tom and one evening during a hosted dinner, Zaras secret past is revealed. Over 35 years ago she was abducted and only escaped her captor when the house she was being held in caught fire.

Emma, author and investigator, is approached by Tom to see whether she can help Zara fill in the gaps from her past. Emma has been looking into a child sex ring over time and wonders whether this case is tied and most importantly whether it links to her sister, who went missing some years ago.

However it appears that somebody is out jeopardise her efforts. Firstly Jack ends up in a coma following a traffic accident. Her friend Rachel's flat is broken into and a firs started alongside her losing her job. Also Emma's charity is also under scrutiny alongside one of her employers ending up the victim of an accident.

Brilliant read....can't wait for the next instalment.

Wow. What an intense story. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I couldn’t read fast enough. Intriguing, exciting and thought evoking.

I have read each book in the series and this one is the best so far. As the mystery deepens and intensifies the story just gets better and better.

Working on the case of her sister, Anna, that went missing 20 years go, Emma has uncovered the truth on several missing and abused children. She has written several books on these cases which has brought her to working with Jack, a police investigator. The two of them have begun to uncover a ring that has been working for decades, kidnapping children and selling them to sexual abusers. The deeper they dig the more they realize some extremely wealthy and important people are involved. The danger increases with each book. I cannot wait to read the last book in this series.

I cannot thank the author enough for creating such wonderful character and stories. Magnificent work! Thank you to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC. A special thanks to the publishers for publishing this series of books and giving us these amazing books.

Repressed is Book 5 in this absolutely fabulous series & another emotional, emotive and tightly plotted thrill ride with investigative journalist Emma Hunter.

Emma, now a well known best selling author for her book Monsters Under The Bed is involved in a different sort of case because this time the child abducted was found and is now married and in her forties.

For Zara Edwards that was a time she wanted desperately to forget but new memories of that time and of people involved are now coming back which could endanger the lives of everyone trying to help, which includes Emma and her friends.

Love the use of dual time lines that the author uses in these novels and I’m on tenterhooks waiting to find out how this brilliant series ends.
LOVED IT ❤️

Repressed is another fantastic book by M.A. Hunter. This book follows Emma as she continues trying to find out what really happened to her sister Anna all those years ago but what will happen when people are being hurt as she starts getting closer to the truth?

I was really hoping that my suspicions from the previous book were confirmed in this one but this wasn’t the case and I’m not surprised because it makes total sense to save it for the final book. There was one part in this book that nearly made me cry because I thought the author was about to rip my heart out but thankfully M.A. Hunter didn’t end up doing that.

The twists, turns and secrets are heating up as this series is coming to a close. I definitely can’t wait to find out how this all ends in the final book exposed.

I recieved an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion.

Whew... my heart is still pounding! We're getting so close to finding out the truth behind Anna's disappearance! The next book can't come quick enough! Although I am sad it's gonna be the last book in the series.
I really really struggled to put this one down. Immediately drawing me in and it's still not let go.
Emma is still a character to root for, while Jack is somewhat 'absent' from the action, he is still a character that has a presence.
Zara's story had completely gripped, and although I wanted a tad bit more, I thought the whole storyline was very cleverly-written and build up tension perfectly, alongside of everything else going on with Emma's investigation.
Super intense, captivating and compellingly suspenseful, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
The next book is pre-ordered! I can't wait!
Highly recommend!

I didn't expect this book to be so plain. The next child kidnapping story was extremely underwhelmed. It wasn't fascinating. There was also a disconnect as it didn't continue with whomever send the two photographs to Emma from the last book. Emma's relationships with both Rick and Jack went nowhere. There was a good continuation for the investigation into Anna's disappearance and the group; however, looking at the book as a whole. The revelation wasn't as big as I thought for the second to last book in the series. I am looking forward to the last book in the series for the answer to Anna's disappearance.

Jack and Emma are still working hard to try and track down a child trafficking ring. However they are under pressure. Rachel, Emma's best friend has her flat broken into and a fire started. Jack is seriously injured. Are they getting close to the truth and to what happened to Emma's missing sister Anna?

Meanwhile Emma is introduced to Zara and Tom. During a dinner party Zara's past, which she even kept secret from Tom is revealed. Kidnapped at a young age and held captive till a fire caused her rescue. Is her case connected and can Emma help Zara uncover her past?

M.A Hunter certainly knows how to keep the read engrossed. I finished this book dying to start the final installment. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is book 5 in the Missing Children Case Files.
Emma Hunter is asked to meet Zara who was held captive 35 years ago. Zara has kept tight control of her life until her abduction was mentioned at a dinner party.
Emma’s sister was also abducted and the two cases may be a part of a larger ring of criminals targeting children.
In this book we are no closer to finding out who took Emma’s sister Anna. But things do take a more sinister turn when Emma and her friends are being warned to stop investigating.
Jack is in a serious car crash that puts him in a coma and Rachel’s flat is broken Into where the accounts for their charity stolen.
Emma and Jack are more determined than ever to solve this case and have the men responsible behind bars.
Can’t wait for book six.

Repressed is the fifth book in The Missing Children Case Files. Another great addition to the series. Although maybe not quite as much happens in this one, it is perfectly setting it up for the last book in the series. As Emma continues to search to find out what happened to her sister Anna, people around her begin to get hurt. I wish it told more of her personal life as well, but expect this will happen in the next book as well. I have mixed feeling about the series ending. I desperately want to know answers but don't want the series to end.

Another instalment in the series and another step closer to finding Emma’s lost sister? Who knows because again we are left with a cliffhanger right at the end!
This time it feels like they are getting too close to exposing the gang and things keep happening to warn them off, proving that they are messing with powerful people. A new case presents itself, with its own intriguing story and a possible further link. Good main plot and again lots of developments in the subplot and the characters. So looking forward to the next and final chapter in this great series

Another brilliant book to add to the series. As with all of these books I was completely absorbed into the story from the first page. I love that each book has its own story but they all connect due to the long storyline that’s ran through the all. The book held my attention completely and I just needed to know what was going to happen next! I can’t wait for the final book to be released in a couple of weeks!

Okay, part of a series and I've started on number 5 (it was the only one in the library and I didn't realise until halfway through with all the "previously on.." lines). Overall, not bad, I quite like the writing style but ending on a cliff hanger kinda annoys me. Will see if I can find the first 4 and the final book too.
