Life in Exile #4

Watcher's Repose

Rate this book
The Nelson's have grown tired of waiting for danger to come to them.

Now they are going to take the fight to their enemy.

Whether that be hit and run attacks against a much larger goblin army by Emily, a raid into the sewers under the capital by Jackson, or the final confrontation with Duke Holstein, they are taking their destiny into their own hands.

They will exploit the dungeon's time distortion, develop new crafts and even learn the secrets of cooking with cilantro.

All this and more as they seek to put to rest any challenge to their place in Eloria.

Continue this epic LitRPG adventure with the second installment in the Life in Exile Series. It's perfect for fans of C.M Carney, Blaise Corvin, and Charles Dean.

DANGIT! I thought there was only four books in the series and now I have to wait to see what happens next.

Oh, man... this was SO bloody good. I can't wait to read more about the Nelson's.

Great end to the first part of the Nelsons story on Eloria. They went through a lot of changes and challenges and came out stronger in the end. Can't wait to see what the future brings.

Alert

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Such a great way to finish the first Nelson Family saga!!! I loved every minute of it! It started off by telling us how David, his wife Emily, and their three children arrived in Eloria, each of them finding their way in this game-like, high-fantasy world!
Well now, they're plenty damn tired of playing defense, and are making ready for their next move... Taking the Fight to the goblins! The goblin army's been massing, and waiting for the passes to clear so they can move to attack the Nelson's and their allies. David figures that strategic guerilla tactics and the element of surprise, might just turn the tide of this war! Meanwhile, Jackson has his own battle to win... and that battle will be right smack-dab in the sewers. Jackson may have some "girl problems" too, only he's way too naive to have figured that out yet! LOL
Once again, Sean Oswald actually got me to care about the stats and points allocation, as each family member works hard at improving their own character build... Fighter Mage, Ninja-Priestess, Meta-Mage, Bare-knucled Fighting Monk, and the youngest (Sarah), well she doesn't have a stat sheet yet, but that isn't stopping her from strengthening the bonds she's formed with her monster-friends, since she's one of the exceedingly rare Monster-Class! I for one, can't wait for her to come of age, and see her power blossom as she literally spreads her wings (we got a little peek in this book, but I need the Full Cookie)!
I already knew that Peter Berkrot was a great narrator, but Oh, My, Gosh... he really got to stretch his pipes for this one! He impressed me all over again with his finely nuanced, pitch-perfect performance!!!

Oh, and with the Nelson's having come from earth, there's plenty of pop-cultural references references thrown in, here's one that had me laughing out loud!
"Alarms may be set to public in which case if they go off they will have an audible warning with a volume setting between 1 and 10, no you may not turn it up to 11."

Having said that, I gonna turn it all the way! 11⭐'s outta 5⭐... so grab all of the audiobooks, and enjoy! 😃

Another great addition

I really love this series! I do kinda wish people weren't as overpowered, but seriously it doesn't detract from the story, it's such a good one i can't wait to continue.

Great addition to litrpg

My ratings are mostly based on how much I enjoyed the book, and somewhat on the book quality.

This book does not stray from the story of the previous books.

More Progression!

The family keeps growing, gaining power learn more about themselves. The family are starting to acclimate to the there new lives and settling in. the story is moving forward steadly and greater plots and evils reveal themselves. There is alot of action, character development and character sheets and skills! Over all very basic and entertaining. I can't wait to see what happens next.

So much fun!!

This Serious has captured me from book one. In this installment we continue to learn more about each developing character. The ebb and flow keeps me interested throughout and at the edge of my seat. I look forward to the next book.

Jackson had to return to the academy. It was his turn now to gain experience, skills, abilities, and a class. He was no longer concerned with the mistreatment and beatings he had received on his last visit. Meanwhile, Edwin Holstein, with his evil co-conspirator Semien, continued with their plans against Albia and King Harold Borstein. While General Icorn, along with Captain Radick, would use the coming winter months to prepare for the Goblin Hoard in the spring. In Airis’s Rise, they too were preparing for the coming war. In a stroke of genius, Baron Mirkwood used the time dilation of the Bastion of Thralls to expedite the training and crafting of the citizens of Airis’s Rise by leaps and bounds. Of course, the dungeon still served to level up the parties that tested its strength. Emily, aka Lady Amerie, finally realized that she was not a human in an Elven costume and came to embrace her Moon Elf existence and heritage. With this revelation, she felt more at peace with her station and was able to apply herself in many ways and/or areas that she had previously avoided. Holstein made his move against Albia while Borstein sent distress messages to his peerage, including Baron Mirkwood, but Dave was reluctant to leave Airis’s Rise until it was safe to do so. There is much yet to take place in the world of Eloria before any hint of conclusion. This series has been a complete surprise to me on how remarkable and exciting it has been. I am a devoted fan of LitRPG novels, and this one certainly ranks in my top ten. Looking at Audible’s offerings, volume one “Uncontrollable” is available for another series “Class Shift” that I may peruse, although I shy away when only one book of a series is published. I shall keep Sean Oswald in mind.

PG LitRPG nice change from the soft porn polygamy

Family style super heros in a LitRPG world. Fullly developed characters for everyone but those need their magazines delivered in brown paper. Nice world building. Double edged powers with pluses and minus. Keeps from being to straight forward so you can overlook some of the over described sections... Authors! This is not a new genre now...Everquest came out over 20 years ago if people dont know what is going on they likely have not seen Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. This is miniscule portion of your audience DONT WRITE FOR THEM! Write for us.

Nice sequel

I like the tone and pace of the book. There are many good points of struggle in the book that you look at the reading progress expecting to be further. Only to realize you still have plenty more to go. The character level progression is nice a bit OP but not crazy or overwhelming and little bit is a good thing. The tier progression work would be good for the classes in the next book. Looking forward to what is next.

Eagerly waiting the continuation

Really enjoyed this series so far as I could absolutely put myself in Dave's shoes. I really like how the magic system works with different spells being made available based on a character's underlying path. The different races and the motivations they each have are really well done and I can only envision what book five will bring as I expect a significant culmination of events to occur

A fitting end of the first act

This entry in the series appears to end the first major act. A lot of threads are snipped and yet it is obvious there is plenty more to come. I appreciate the way the books follow all the Nelson's, and don't focus on a single character. I enjoy the world the author has built and look forward to more adventures with the Nelson's.

Even Better than the Last

I really enjoyed this entry. Much more than the last. Great action. Good character growth. Some twists. No cliffhanger but some good set up for the next. Very clean series, too, without swearing, sex, etc... love the family angle which is pretty unique in the LitRPG genre.

Better and better

This series continues to set itself apart from the pack. Most Litrpg’s focus on a few zero to hero types. Not here, this book has people from all walks of life interacting and growing with one another in a seamless fashion, and it clear that sean Oswald sees so much deeper than your typical wordsmith.

great series

Another good installment that answered more questions and kept me up at night reading when I should have been sleeping. Caught up to books currently written and now comes the waiting game. Thinking that Sara is going to have a much bigger role to play in the next book.

Best yet

Somewhat abrupt ending of the arc that started in the first book. The main characters are flawed and have to overcome those flaws but the villains are all the mustache twirling truly evil type. It’s still a satisfying read with good progression of the characters skills. The writing has notably improved in pacing and flow from book one.

Great series with a few flaws

An otherwise great story is marred by some odd mid-series changes. The author seems to repeatedly lose track of character stats, rewinding previous gains only to have those same changes and more reinstated later. Balayria starts as a half orc half human and inexplicably becomes half orc half elf. Overpowered skills get nerfed without any explanation.
If details matter then this story needs the help of a proper editor.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!
Again WOW!!!!!!!
Book 5 PLEASE!!
But seriously, book 4 has blown away all expectations. More than once my eyes started watering from the pure emotion being driven from narrator. The story, and series, engoulfs all aspecs I love in a LitRPG. Watch out Aleron Kong, Sean Oswald has your number with this series.
With that said can we have book 5 pretty please.

Not as good as before

I have to say I enjoy this series a lot. However in this bookings happened to easily. Lots happened in this book but it all felt like it was not that much of a threat to the nelsons.

Much better editing

The story continues to shape up well. Focusing on a single perspective for several chapters at a time was nice. Thank you for fixing the problem with editing. This one was much more legible.

Great Continuation With The Series

Great Continuation With The Series! I liked how the family grew and had their own struggles. The summary was OUTSTANDING! I hate having a book end with a cliffhanger. Looking forward to the next book! Great job!

This one's actually pretty good. There were no repetition, no time line shenanigans, and even Emily is less annoying. The story and setting is still rather basic, but is showing promise. And centaurs might be showing up so it's got me interested.

This one was really good. Lots of action. Lots of drama. Some suspense. Pacing was just right, the side characters were well done and I never felt like they detracted from the main plot. Overall, excellent book.
