I had a tough time with this one. The book is advertised as “Crime Fiction.” I first thought it was a murder mystery. I kept waiting for the plot to develop and evidence to mount. It never did.
Somebody would go somewhere. Instead of X left Y and drove to Z, we’d get street by street narration of the journey. I was waiting for the bad guys to ambush somebody on these trips. It didn’t happen.
The other issue was that people were “falling in love,” way too quickly. The reader is expected to believe that people who had known each other only a couple of weeks are madly in love at the beginning of a life long relation ship. This doesn’t happen once, but with at with least four couples.
I was completely lost. I kept waiting on the crime the protagonists would have to solve. It never came. I felt like I was erase dropping somebody’s personal, if unlikely, life.
Then, I finally realized that I was judging this under the wrong genre. It’s not a mystery, it’s a Soap Opera. Soap Operas are about Doctors and lawyers. Wealthy people, by average standards. Love (Soap Opera version) comes fast and easy. This book substitutes NBA athletes for doctors. We still have lawyers.
I’m not going to knock a book because it’s not the genre I expected. If you like Soaps, this is at least a 4 of 5 stars. Maybe 5. I’ve just never come across a “Soap” in print as opposed to on TV.
If you like Soaps, this is a book for you.

I enjoyed this book a lot. The Aftermath: The Chronicles of Brock Lane Mark Stephen O'Neal was an enjoyable crime fiction novel with rich, fluid narration. At first, I thought this book was a purely romance book because of the cover design but the genre falls more on the crime side. What's more interesting about this book is that it doesn't really tell you much where the story leads you.

I was surprised to find out that this book was also heavy on angst. The drama side surprised me. I didn't expect that coming. There were lots of interesting things that happened in this book. It was well-written and I loved that the pacing was fast and on-point. All in all, an enjoyable read!

Fizzled Out

This series just fell apart for me. The adult conversations were so basic. Grown people falling in love after knowing each other 5 seconds. Nikki going off on people and then just making a complete 180 (bipolar)? Being abstinent and then just having sex. How about being a virgin and just giving it up? It was all just too much and not believable. The author should have focused on the main plot and called it a day.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading all three books in the life of Brock Lane. Will you continue the series? I would love someone to pick this up and turn it into a tv show or movie.

I liked the trilogy because it captured my attention immediately. I will recommend it to friends and family. The characters were real and believable.
