Fairleigh Sisters #2

Jedna noć skandala

Rate this book

No postoji nešto uzbudljivo – i iznenađujuće nježno – u svezi s njezinim mračnim, nedodirljivim mladoženjom, a žudnja je u njegovim očima neosporiva. Prije nego što se Lottie preda čežnjama svoga srca, mora otključati tajne Haydenove prošlosti, koliko god skandalozne – ili stravične – one bile.

4 Dramatic but Adorable Stars!

When I read the blurb for this book and realised that it would be Lottie's book, I was a bit hesistant but intrigued enough to read it. In a Kiss to Remember (the first book), Lottie was an absolute terror, after 2 attempts on Sterling's life I was sure she was the black sheep of the family and I didn't know if I liked her very much...

Lottie got herself into a bit.of a pickle in this book. She finds herself married to an infamous Marquis and is promptly packed into a carriage set for his home in Cornwall. This book was such delightful historical romp with a touch of gothic mystery. To be quite honest it reminded me a little of Jane Eyre although Lottie is nothing like that Jane.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't relish all the grief Allegra gave Lottie. Served her right for the troublesome child she'd been lol. Jokes aside Lottie's character was so endearing in this book. There's just something about how innocent yet diabolical she could be. She might have been forced to marry the Murderous Marquis but she definitely didn't act like a damsel in distress. She shook Hayden's entire world and he had absolutely no hope of ever winning.

I think its safe to say that Teresa Medeiros, has found loyal fan in me. While I definitely loved A Kiss To Remember A LOT, this book definitely tickled by funny bone and tugged on my heartstrings. I loved the cameos from the characters. I've only read 2 books written by this author but I think its safe to say that humor plays a big part in her books, and that was probably one of the things I appreciated most. There was never a dull moment, its giggles all round even when the scene is a bit sad. Another recommended read!

Too long, it dragged on in its attempts to be a gothic novel. It's basically the novel Rebecca, the new wife haunted by the dead first wife's memory. Lottie was an ok heroine, Hayden was stupid, Allegra was horrific, disliked all the household staff/servants, etc. Definitely wasn't worth the read to me. I was bored.

I am so disappointed. This book was not romantic at all in my eyes. I don't mind the gothic feel to it, the abnormal, but a romance book should have some romance and I felt let down.

Gostei.

I'm still reeling from this book. Wow. I didn't expect the heaviness.

All I can say is that, if you loved and enjoyed To Sir Philip with Love by Julia Quinn, and you expected the dead ex trope was dealt better, then this is the book for you. There were many similarities between these two and yet, this book did it much better in my opinion.

Also, there was also this subplot with a haunted room, that totally took me by surprise.

And the thing with the dead wife? It was so sad and I don't know what to do with my feelings right now. ☹️

All in all, what a fabulous read. TM is such a gem!

I just cannot get enough of Teresa Medeiros' works lately! Every novel that I read by her always contains lots of drama and hot love scenes that just gets me in an excited mood! Well, I have just recently read my fourth Teresa Medeiros book called “One Night of Scandal” and believe me, I immediately got hooked onto this book! “One Night of Scandal” is the second book in Teresa Medeiros' Fairleigh Sisters series, being the sequel to “A Kiss to Remember,” and this time, the book stars Carlotta Anne Fairleigh ( or as everyone's favorite troublemaker, Lottie) as she also goes through the trials of love just as her sister, Laura has done in “A Kiss to Remember.” Prepare yourselves for a lot of romance, drama and excitement in this second installment of Teresa Medeiros' classic Fairleigh sister series!

Just as Carlotta Anne Fairleigh (Lottie) was about to make her debut into society, her curiosity gets the best of her when she hears terrible stories about Hayden St. Clair or as everyone calls him, “The Murderous Marquess” and Lottie decides to pay the marquess a visit to see if the rumors are true on the night of her debutante ball! Unfortunately, when Lottie and Hayden accidentally kissed each other, the scandal sheets start sending out rumors about Hayden and Lottie's relationship and in order to save her reputation, Lottie agrees to marry “The Murderous Marquess” and move to his isolated mansion on the hill. See sparks fly between Lottie and Hayden as there will be loads of secrets revealed that might either save their romance or ruin it.

Whew! Let me get myself together here since I am still wheeling with excitement from reading this book!

Alright, Teresa Medeiros has done it again in this sequel to one of the most beloved books out of Teresa Medeiros' romance novels as she provides loads of romance and excitement that will have the audience wanting more from the book! The true highlights in this book were the characters themselves as all the characters were well developed, especially Carlotta Anne Fairleigh and Hayden St. Clair, the main couple in this book. Carlotta Anne Fairleigh was probably the most inspirational character in this book as she greatly matures in this book (unlike her murderous younger self in “A Kiss to Remember) and she is shown to be a brave and inventive young woman who believes in her ambitions to be a great writer and also tries to do everything in her power to make people see the good side of Hayden St. Clair, which is why I loved Lottie much better in this book than in her first appearance in “A Kiss to Remember.” Hayden St. Clair is the handsome yet mysterious new lover to Lottie as he is shown to be extremely mysterious in his ways with society, but also shown to be traumatized over the loss of his first wife, which makes him a truly believable character that deals with the loss of a loved one. I also loved the way that Teresa Medeiros portrayed the scandal sheets (or in today's world, the paparazzi) having a negative effect on Hayden St. Clair's personality and life as Hayden faces isolation from society and also has a hard time trying to tell Lottie his true feelings for her because it made me really feel sorry for Hayden throughout the book and while I was reading this book, I was wishing so hard that Hayden gets his happily ever after and be able to feel love with everyone again. The only thing that got me a little frustrated with this book was the fact that Hayden keeps on pushing Lottie away from him, even though deep down he truly loves her, but does not want to show his feelings for her and I can kind of understand why Hayden is acting so isolated towards Lottie because of his past and because he lost his first wife, so it was difficult for him to love another person again, but I sometimes wished that Hayden would let Lottie in his heart a little bit just so their relationship could go a little further. For romance fans everywhere, there are lots of hot and sizzling love scenes between Hayden and Lottie that will make anyone's skin pulse with excitement and satisfaction and they are so hot that Hayden and Lottie's relationship take flight whenever these scenes come around!

For people who do not like sex scenes, there are plenty of sex scenes in this book, so people could skip over the sex scenes if they get too inappropriate for them.

All in all, “One Night of Scandal” is easily one of the best romance novel sequels I have read so far and for anyone who loves some good old drama, romance and a little supernatural element, this book is definitely one that every romance fan should check out!

Carlotta Farleigh is in London ready to make her debut to society when she discovers that the home next door is being rented by the "Murderous Marquess" Hayden St. Clair. Always impulsive, Lottie decides to sneak over and take a peek at the notorious Marquess. But Lottie's plans never work out the way she thinks they will. She ends up thoroughly compromised and engaged to Hayden St. Clair. If stories about the death of his first wife are true, Lottie had better watch her back. Yet as she lives in his mansion and gets to know him, she soon discovers that things aren't as they seem.

This was an amusing addition to Teresa Medeiros' Farleigh Sisters series. Lottie is very much a drama queen who wants to be a published writer. I thought some of her inner dialogue was hilarious. This was a fun story and good follow-up to the first book in the series. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

3,5 estrellas.

This book has an identity crisis or BPD.
The cute, frothy beginning never lets you know that soon you'll enter an eerie, gothicy world. So, fans of either genre will feel let down.
Just like the poor H, Hayden who had a deal with Rebecca-ish first wife and now has a pushy Pollyanna to contend with. Between a catty ghost and a determined do-gooder, he doesn't have much choice.

I get it that a compromised Regency h has to marry but here everyone takes the bit between their teeth and start running. With dukes and other influential people in the family, it's quite excessive to believe that soon men will be lining up to offer her a slip-on-the-shoulder/mistress-ships.
And Allegra, the step-daughter is over-hated imo. She is just a very troubled and lonely child who's acting up.
And let me say that the unmentioned past - dead or not so dead - is more riveting and dramatic.

Look this book is readable because Teresa Medeiros is a good writer. On the other hand, some serious "Jane Eyre" moments going on here.

Way too many plot points and characters.
-Harriet
-Ned Townsend
-Ghost
-Old crone teacher

The paranormal aspect definitely could have been omitted. The beginning of the story and first couple chapters were great with Hayden and Lottie displaying fantastic friction, sexual tension, and chemistry. Their competing dialogue had me highly anticipating their relationship. Unfortunately, the chemistry disappears as soon as they get married. The story switches to Lottie feeling lost in Cornwall and dealing with Hayden's bratty but oh so misunderstood daughter. Even though I thought the book was pretty mediocre and was anticipating the ending it still ended up feeling abrupt.

Read up until Hayden and Lottie get married, it's all down hill from there. (Haha, maybe this was a philosophical/political point from Medeiros)

Medeiros has way better books out there, this one is can be skipped.

This book started off great, with witty dialogues and fun situations. The MCs were endearing and I couldn't wait to watch them fall in love. But then the tone of the book changed abruptly, it became somber and angsty. The dead wife, the ghost, the new setting, the unruly daughter, it was all too much. The writing was fantastic, and if the entire story from beginning to end had carried a gothic undertone, then I probably would've enjoyed it more. But after a sensational, lighthearted start, I ended up somewhat disappointed with the plot's development and the overall melancholy. Even though we get a HEA at the end, I was mostly sad by the time I got to the end.

Carlotta Anne Fairleigh has always been a little too curious for her own good. Which would probably explain how she got the nickname: the Hereford Hellion. Of course, it could have nothing to do with the fact she let loose a pony in a teacher's room, or the multitude of other pranks she pulled as a child. No, it just seems Lottie has always had a knack for getting herself into a heap of trouble, which would probably explain why she is finally having her coming out ball at the age of twenty-one. And it was that insatiable curiosity which prompted her to climb out of her bedroom window in a full ball gown, ripping the bodice in the process, to heave herself over the wall of the neighbouring townhouse. For it had been heralded in the scandal sheets that the Murderous Marquis had returned to London. And though there is not a light on, not a sign of movement next door, Lottie just had to find out if the floating candle flame was ghost or something very real.

Hayden St. Clair, the Marquis of Oakleigh had made a terrible mistake: he had come to London. What he had come looking for, he was never going to find, not with the reporters of the scandal sheets dogging his every step and the newspapers blaring his every move to a public hungry for anything to do with the Murderous Marquis. No, he had been a complete fool to come. But he had been desperate to find a woman who could satisfy his needs. Sitting in the dark, Hayden is appalled when he discovers one of those bloody reporters lurking around his window. Intending to give the bugger a little surprise, he hauls her through the window, only to discover she's the most exquisite little baggage he has gazed upon in a very long time arousing desires in him too long denied.

Lottie is thoroughly ruined. Never in her wildest dreams did she think her coming out would end so dramatically, nor that her life would be over from a kiss. But of course, it could have been the fact she was standing in front of the open window in the arms of the marquis, her bodice torn and exposed, her arms wrapped around him as if she never wanted to let go. Kissing as though her world was on fire, only to be caught by her brother-in-law and guardian: the Duke of Devonbrooke. Now to save her brother-in-law from dying in a duel with the marquis, she does the unthinkable, and pleads St. Clair to marry her.

Horror of horrors, Hayden suddenly finds himself married, breaking a promise he had vowed years before after the terrible death of his first wife. But this time it will be different, for though he finds Lottie to be an exquisitely lush woman, it will be a marriage in name only, or so he keeps telling himself. But even haunted by the ghost of his first wife, and the dark secrets which encompass his past, his new wife occupies his every waking thought, and then there's the dreams which torment him.

Strangely enough, the more Lottie spends around her husband more she realizes what a truly lonely and tormented man he is, awakening something inside of her she thought never to feel for the Murderous Marquis. More and more she suspects his first wife's death is not all as it seems. But can she unlock the secrets of his past, freeing his heart with the glory of love? Or is she destined to haunt Oakleigh Manor with all the other ghosts?

Once again, Teresa Medeiros had created a masterpiece! There is never been a book of her's I didn't love. She has an amazing ability to create rich complex characters, and stories that are not only filled with romance and passion, but wit and humour, adventure and intrigue. One Night of Scandal belongs on the keeper shelf along with all her others.

This was a good book...flushed out characters...old theme but new way of presenting it...but for some reason I don't finish a Medeiros book with that elusive sense of closure and contentment. I am not sure what is missing from her books...I just don't walk away from it being fully satisfied.

I love a good compromised trope and the way this went down was pretty great. I give it 4.5 rounded to 5 stars.

I liked the heroine and how her mind worked. Hertforshire Hellion indeed.

I ended up really enjoying this story even though the beginning started off really silly. I think Medeiros created such a different tone on purpose to contrast with the gravitas later in the book and demonstrate how the heroine grew into a formidable, mature woman.

There were many things I liked in this tale. I really liked the heroine. She was definitely the lightness in this story. I also thought the pain of the hero and is struggle to find normalcy was very poignant. The daughter was also an interesting character who hit notes of both innocence and perceptiveness.

There were two things that kept it from being a 5 star for me. First, there’s a separation which I don’t think was good. Second, there was a paranormal
Element that made it decidedly gothic as I expected but with the rest of the narrative it didn’t quite fit and I thought it unnecessary.

Overall, a great book and one I enjoyed around Halloween time (even though I’m just doing the review now!). It’s one I believe I’ll revisit.

Usually I’m not a fan of Gothic inspired romances, but this one managed to bring out enough fun to counter the gothic gloom.
Lottie is adorable and the little hellion from the previous book in the series blossomed into a strong, albeit a little silly, woman.
I specially like that she starts silly and naive and grows into a more mature person. Her vision of life changing before our very eyes.
Throw in a little flair of Jane Eyre with a brooding but irresistible hero (and make him better by being good hearted) and a little girl (his daughter), set it all at the cliffs of Cornwall and the book is sure to stick to the mind.
Great characters, even the side ones, good plotting and love conquering it all in the end.
Great read!

I love Teresa Medeiros' writing; she creates such vivid pictures, it doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to "see" her stories. I loved the gothic feel of this story- Cornwall, the moors, the cliffs by the sea... I loved it all! This story was also very Jane Eyre-esque, which I loved. However, there wasn't enough interaction between the H/h for their love to be believable. I craved more time between the two of them, especially once the conflict was resolved.

This was a fantastic story! This book is the sequel to A KISS TO REMEMBER, but really stands alone. I didn't read the first book and it didn't take away anything from my enjoyment for this book.

The characters come alive in this story with a wide range and depth of emotions and personality. The heroine, Carlotta, tries to make the best of the situation she finds herself in, being married to a man who is rumored to have murdered his first wife and stepmother to a little girl who is both older and wiser than her years and deeply troubled. The hero is a complex character but carries a great burden of pain and guilt on his shoulders. He feels the best way to survive without causing anyone, especially Lottie, any pain or grief, is to distance himself physically and emotionally from her. He finds that to be difficult, however, when Lottie and his daughter, Allegra, begin to form a bond that brings laughter and music into his home, something that has been missing since before his first wife died.

I highly recommend this story.

I usually enjoy Teresa Medeiros' books. The problem I had with this story was the lack of interaction between the Hero and Heroine. Too much of the story focused on Lottie's relationship with Alegra the daughter - who I found weird and creepy. I didn't understand where the basis for the attraction was between the leads. I stuck with it until the end, but by then I didn't care if they got their HEA. I would recommend reading A Kiss to Remember which is Lottie's older sister's story and avoid this book altogether.

When I read the blurb for this book and realised that it would be Lottie's book, I was a bit hesistant but intrigued enough to read it. Lottie got herself into a bit.of a pickle in this book. She finds herself married to an infamous Marquis and is promptly packed into a carriage set for his home in Cornwall. This book was such delightful historical romp with a touch of gothic mystery. Carlotta Farleigh is in London ready to make her debut to society when she discovers that the home next door is being rented by the "Murderous Marquess" Hayden St. Clair. Lottie escapes her debut to go poking around the supposed murderer's house next door armed with an artfully torn bodice and a whole lot of gumption. Always impulsive, Lottie decides to sneak over and take a peek at the notorious Marquess. Hayden, said shady murder-neighbor, discovers her and ends up kissing her face off because boners. But Lottie's plans never work out the way she thinks they will. After some wrangling, they end up married and in Cornwall (where boners allegedly go to die)! She ends up thoroughly compromised and engaged to Hayden St. Clair. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? One Night of Scandal is the sequel to A Kiss To Remember and tells the story of Lotti, Laura's younger sister. I was suprised to find how much I enjoyed the story, especially the mystery and little plot twists. I liked watching Lotti's character grow up, and watching her and Hayden's surrendor to love. I enjoyed the humor, and the HEA ofcourse! The other reviewers do the plot brilliantly so I wont add to it. I have a couple of reasons I dont give it 5 stars and the first one is because I dont think that Lottie and Hayden St Clair spend enough time together,in my opinion there was not a lot of interaction between them.

Totally skipped my never ending TBR list and read this one. Why do you ask? A blurb that reads "unexpected marriage to a mysterious Marquess who may have murdered his first wife" Thats why. This was a good book...flushed out characters...old theme but new way of presenting it...but for some reason I don't finish a Medeiros book with that elusive sense of closure and contentment. I am not sure what is missing from her books...I just don't walk away from it being fully satisfied. I really enjoyed this book and the wit ,humour and sexual tension in it is TM at her best, just brilliant.
