I really liked this couple and their schmexy jungle romance!

description

So--we get a badass survivalist h, Cleo who has been successfully hiding out in the alien jungle from her kidnappers for the past year- accompanied by her not quite monkey companion (who is as adorable as he is dangerous) when the Big Bads finally send in their best tracker to bring her back.

Our H, Sohut, (Riv's younger brother) is a stoic male who likes to spend his time hunting, and is more at peace in the wilderness than around others. When he takes this job thinking its going to be a routine animal capture he realizes pretty quick that his prey might not only be smarter and more wily than he thought- but not the creature he was lead to believe he would find.

Instead he finds Cleo- who is definitely willing to give him the most interesting hunt of his life.

And yes, thanks to my brain going right to George of the Jungle for gifs- I now want to go watch that movie.

Cool, cool.

It's time for another Amanda Review where she overall liked a book but picks at a lot of things that she just can't let go.

Let's get what I liked out of the way first:

+ This book has a fun jungle romp theme to it. It has plenty of action and is fast-paced. It kept me locked in, and I did not wander off once due to boredom or finding the storyline tedious.
+ Cute but deadly animal companion that terrifies the body fluids out of people.
+ Cleo and Sohut are pretty sweet together and have some nice steamy scenes.
+ Editing is pretty tight on this one. I did not notice any serious, glaring errors in it.
+ Allergic reactions. Yes, there would definitely be things that we're allergic to and have sensitivities to on other planets.

Based on those things alone, I would have given this read a 4 star rating.

But.

As my mother complains, I'm no fun to watch any movies with, because I'm analyzing the plot, the characters, the themes, and pointing out inconsistencies the entire time. Apparently, a lot of you do not find that sort of thing endearing or entertaining and avoid doing it. Whatever.🖤

There are a lot of little things my brain latched onto that I couldn't just let go, and some of these are the author undermining what she intended to do in the story.

Let's get to it: mild spoilers ahead.

+ Things I would love to never see again in a book: fatphobic commentary.

Cleo decides because her guards are fat, they're out of shape, based on nothing else. We even get to hear about one's "jiggly" belly (from Sohut) later on. You can not ascertain anyone's fitness level by looking at their bodies. Ever. It's fatphobic as shit. I realize characters are going to have negative traits, but this wasn't an instance of intentionally writing Cleo that way. If it had, the guards would have proven her wrong at some point by giving her a serious run for her money, but because this didn't happen, and it's both characters' making these remarks, it's the author's world view, not them. So...Lazy GROSS Fatty stereotypes with We Know He's Evil Because He's FAT trope. It's seriously lazy. And in this our year of 2021, I'm not being polite about calling it out when I see it.

+ Cleo is intended to be a pretty hardcore survivalist with mad skills she's had drilled into her since childhood, which she appears to have—until you realize the only reason she's actually not dead is because of her pet, which has been keeping everything away from her and letting her focus only on the easier tasks of food, water, and shelter. OH WAIT, HE LED HER TO ALL OF THOSE TOO. Cleo was basically the 3 year old you let "help" bake, while Wawa did most of the work to ensure she lived. Good friend to have; terrible plot device if you're trying to sell your heroine as a survivalist who doesn't need anyone else.

+ Shaming Cleo's mother for choosing to loan out her body as an incubator for 9 months to give up all custody and parental rights of that child so Cleo's father could have her, when she didn't want to be a parent at all. Maybe don't frame mom as an unfeeling bitch who wanted to, "throw [her baby] away"? 🤷‍♀️ What her mother did was, frankly, pretty incredible and self-sacrificing. I don't think there's a single person on this Earth I would gift a baby I didn't want to carry and then be responsible for raising.

+ Is the smoke drug an opiate, or is it pot? The way it had been described in previous books and by Sohut, it sounded like something destructive that steals your life from you/makes you waste away, but the octodudes in the jungle were having a big stoner bash with it that gives it more of a pot feel. Sleepy eyes, big appetites, and very mellow, dudes.

+ Speaking of...why exactly did they already have human languages in their translators if they've had zero contact with humans?

Nothing terribly serious, but certainly things that could improve or be clarified with someone more critically-minded to bounce off of.

So. This is a fun follow up to the previous book, though not the same sweet experience, if you're hoping for an encore.

5 stars ⭐️

This the second book in the Rivs Sanctuary series, and it is even better than the first one. Sohut began his story in book 1, with a cameo appearance. Now he has his own story, and I just loved it. Plenty of action, and a healthy dose of humour throughout the book. This is turning out to be a great little series. I cant wait to see what Ka’sit and Nia get up to in book 3

3.4 stars. The first book of this series is phenomenal. This one was good but not great. It had a lot of excellent ideas in it, but just didn't rise to the same level of excellence.

- Female main character is so smart, strong, and clever. She survives alone in a jungle (on another planet) for a year. Yes, she has a pet that also contributes, but she is able to make it by herself and do a great job at hiding and protecting herself.
- Male main character is thoughtful and intelligent. He's pretty interesting, but gets shallow in weird ways. He hides information from the heroine several times and with no good reason.
- The relationship is a lot more insta-lust and less believable than Riv and Lauren. They could have had more slow burn (which I personally love), but instead go from zero to sexy times pretty quickly. And without much progression, they are both convinced of their life-long love for each other. For instance, they never really share much about their pasts and the hero is constantly having hangups that he doesn't address.

It's a fun world with interesting characters. I'm hoping the third book is better, but I'm a little afraid we might see a further devolution of the story/plot.

A new favorite alien romance!!

This is the romance between Cleo and Sohut. We met Sohut in the previous book in the series, since he is Riv's brother. Sohut has been hired by some aliens to find a creature that escaped their grasp.
Little does he know that the aliens who hired him are actually slavers who lost one of their human slaves. Her name is Cleo and she has been living in the jungle on her own for a while since she escaped. So Sohut is shocked when he realizes that he has not been tracking an animal at all, and he is even more shocked when he realizes that he is attracted to her.

This was hot, fun, and swoony!! I loved their relationship so much! Also, the setting was everything to me! For some reason, I love alien romances where the characters are trying to survive in an unknown land. Both of these characters go through so much, and I love how they learned to lean on each other with those burdens.

Also, no third act breakup!! That is a huge green flag in my book🤣

TW: kidnapping, slavery, blood

TROPES: alien romance, books with pets (wawa 🥺), caretaking scene (cleo helps sohut when he's hurt), damaged hero, kindle unlimited, never been kissed (hero), survival, warrior women

Quick(ish) Review

Different vibe to the first book with some minor overlap, I really liked Sohut and Cleo. This series has darker elements like kidnapping, forced sexual situations for human and/or alien slaves. It also deals with horrible parents who abandoned both Sohut and Cleo. But at its core the romance is sweet and not as much of a slow burn as the first book. There’s some awkward phrasing but overall I’ve enjoyed the stories and I’ve now signed up for this author’s newsletter because I want to check out their backlist as well as get notification when the next book when it comes out. If you’re into SFR with an emphasis on the romance, you may enjoy this.

Sohut’s Protection is the second sci-fi book in the fun Riv's Sanctuary series by AG Wilde. Kidnapped and left in the jungle after her escape but now her time is up they have sent someone to hunt her. They find something they thought would never be possible, and that is a connection with each other in the face of uncertainty and danger.

This romance tale has a little tension, drama, angst, danger, suspense, and a bit of wit. It made my heart ache, and had me laughing at times. Sohut’s Protection is an enjoyable read and a series that should not be missed.

I stayed up to 4:00 am reading this book and the only reason I stopped was to charge up my Kindle and the first thing I did when I woke up was to go back to it. I'd got it through KU and as soon as I finished it, I returned it so I could purchase my own copy. This is one I'm going to read again and will be in my top books of 2024, no question.

This is an alien romance, one of the best I've read. If you've never dipped your toe into this trope, Sohut's Protection is a most excellent book to start with. Its the second book in a series but you don't have to have read the first book. I did and thoroughly enjoyed it, but you don't need to.

Cleo has been stolen from Earth by these alligator like beings, but was then captured by a different group of aliens, neither of which had good plans on what to do with her. She manages to escape and survives on her own in the forest of this strange planet. Then one day she sees what she guesses to be a tracker dropped off and knows he's coming for her.

Sohut is the tracker in question. He's good at what he does and manages to track her down but he's horrified when he does. He was mislead on what he was tracking. He thought he was tracking a wild animal but instead he discovers Cleo is an incredibly beautiful young human woman. He's in awe when he realizes she's survived on her own for such a long time. And although he's a different species, Cleo is attacked to Sohut. Picture him as not unlike a Na'vi from Avatar and I think you'll get a feel for what he looks like. He's big, blue, with a flatter face and a tail. The two of them, along with a "pet" she's had for company, work together to get back to his home.

I LOVE these two. Cleo is the very definition of a kick ass heroine. She doesn't sit back waiting for Sohut to save her. No, she's his equal in the saving department. And Sohut is the best type of hero. He knows right from the beginning how special Cleo is. He respects her and is truly willing to die for her. The love scenes are so well done. I often skim them in books for one reason or another but they are an integral part of the story. And they are very steamy.

Yep, this is a book I think all romance readers will enjoy, even those who have never read an alien romance before and I highly recommend it. Its a 5+ book for me.

Clever girl

Cleo wasn't prepared for being kidnapped by aliens. I mean, really, who is, right? But, the minute she wakes up, she's ready to run. Something to use as a weapon? Check. Possible opportunity coming up? Check. Willing to risk injury to obtain freedom? *Looks over at the next cage where the inmate is dying* Triple check. Capitalized. And, as luck would have it, something else breaks free, too. It's cute, it's fuzzy, and, unbeknownst to her, it's terrifying enough that it's keeping away predators. But, even a year of jungle life hasn't shaken her pursuers. They've sent an uber tracker after her this time. And even his concern over the adorable fuzzy monster isn't going to keep him away. Because, while he was told he was tracking an animal, what he scents is something far more precious.

Spoilers ahead.
Cleo was raised by a survivalist. It's a definite advantage. Also, her guards were apparently more derp than Lauren's, which gave her a chance to escape. I was going to go back to the original series, but realized the second to the sanctuary one was already out. So... I had to read it first. I still have so many questions.
*The Ts, the mean ones not the helpful ones, seem to be in power, but it's shaky and they're dying? Most oppressed peoples, when scenting weakness, would use that to their advantage. Even the gator goons would realize paycheck production would be halting soon and just loot the toads and head off to more profitable pastures.
*If the thing killing the toads is genetic, why do they think that breeding is going to fix it? And how would that even work? I could almost understand it if they were lab created babies, but they appear to be going at it the old fashioned way. Which, considering their rapid decline, wouldn't seem all that effective.
*Toads are bad but powerful, the octo-like people seem to be the actual inhabitants of the planet, yet very few places on this planet would create life that looks like them. The majority of the planet seems to be plains and desert. There's jungle patches, maybe it could have produces amphibian sentients, but not something octopus like. Unless the other half of the planet, which we haven't seen, is all water? Anyway, the balloon back of the head feature seems like it would be highly unwieldy, and a severe liability, on land.
*Wawa is adorable.
*I'm really curious about the welder like mask. Please tell me that's getting explained in his book?
*I don't know what life is indigenous and what settled there. And looking at blurbs for the previous series, most of it seems to be in space lol. This doesn't help me. Inquiring minds want to know.
*Finally an allergic reaction. Not that I want anyone to suffer, but seriously, a whole other world's biology. No bug bite reactions? No pollen allergies, especially in a jungle? It didn't mention her boiling her cotton substitute first, and a trained survivalist would be worried about things like chiggers, mites or plant oils. But, also, foods, cut plants (saps or resins leaking from them), animal dander, all the nitpicking little things that could trigger an immune system from a being that hails from another galaxy.
*The octo-like Ts understood her. No mention that Sohut told them to all upload her language, and yet from her first word to them they all understood her perfectly.

This series is entertaining. And I know I pick more than most readers are going to. But the best part of sci-fi is interacting with the new world. Discovery, learning, observing, adjusting, adapting. When you introduce a foreign organism, there are reactions. But, the editing is really good, dialogue never stalls- and when 2 species can't understand each other, that's a feat.

4&1\2 fabulous🌟 "s for Sohut's Protection

Once again we are back on Hudo III and Sohut get to tell his story and finds his soulmate in the earth female Cleo. Sent on a mission to retrieve a lost animal turns out to be a mission to rescue an abducted human female. The Orc like aliens lied to him he was not going to let someone as wonderful as Cleo be captured by very again if he could help it. Cleo abducted from earth over a year ago, crash landed and then captured again she escapes after the caravan she's riding I has an accident. She's free along with an adorable pet to survive in an alien Jungle. She does remarkably well until Sohut finds her. They both know she won't be able to survive much longer on her own. After some serious misunderstandings ,they work as a tram to find away home to the sanctuary. As they fight their way home they need to escape the gator guards and the Tasquels! Along the way trust builds followed by a love that is soul deep. They learn to rely on each other and to fight to keep what belong s to them. Great story and yes ill be reading the 3rd! Totally recommend🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟🔥💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥🌟💖🌟🔥💖🔥💖💖🔥🔥

These two were so stinking cute I couldn’t stop smiling. Cleo is the ultimate wilderness survival queen—smart, resourceful, and just hardcore enough to make me want to take notes. Enter Sohut, a hired animal tracker/bounty hunter alien, and whew… the chemistry was instant sparks meets slow-burn crackle.

And can we talk about wawa? Because honestly, who doesn’t love a badass pet stealing the scene? Between the fierce cuddles and loyal sidekick energy, wawa deserves their own spin-off.

This story gave me everything—romance, adventure, survival, alien hotties, and a pet I’d risk my life to adopt. Another hit from A.G. Wilde, and I’m already itching for more in this universe.

This author, again, exceeded my expectations, hence the 4-stars.

Likable characters, story, and universe. The story kept me engaged until the end.

However, there are issues that shouldn't have been issues at all. Other reviewers have gone more in-depth about the problems, maybe it's nitpicking, but when you read an entertaining story that could have been great, well, it's a bit of a bummer.

This is a brittle 4-stars, like the first book, but when you've read a plethora of brain-numbing, pointless alien smexing stories, when you read a decent one, you cling to it like a face-hugger.

I’m giving it three stars because it was just an okay read for me. I guess it was a little insta-lust-lovey for me. It seems that they got together a little too soon in the the story that it got a little boring for me afterwards.

Good book!

Adventures in the jungle and a very strong and tough heroine. This book was full of fun, and sexy romance . I loved the slizz as a pet and the fact it was fierce yet Cleo had no idea of how dangerous it was. Instead she earned it's love and devotion.

I enjoyed Sohut and Cleo's story. it was interesting and wawa was adorable (I want one). Their lives are certainly exciting and I have to say I think they will do so well together in the future. They have similar interests and hobbies and I love their connection. Look forward to continuing this series.

I sped-read through the first book in this series and immediately picked up this one to continue reading. who needs sleep? not me apparently.

This book dives further into the world of alien romance- a little sexy, a little weird, defintely not something I thought I would enjoy.. but man! I sure did.

Unlike his brother, Sohut is a tracker, able to chase down any prey. When he gets a call to capture an 'animal' he has no idea what he's up against. Cleo is a survalist. Abducted by aliens, twice, she escapes into the jungle to survives for over a year on this alien planet. Little does she know she's met her match.

The hits:

-Cleo. ooh I love a badass woman and Cleo fits the bill. She is a survivalist and can more than hold her own against Sohut and the other aliens on this planet.
-Her pet Wawa. I'm from the northeast, so I loved that she named her pet Wawa! He was such a cutie.
-this book has more 'my mate' vibes and Sohut was the epitome of protective male with his mate. There's even a steamy scene that involves Cleo accidently triggering some of Sohut's more animalistic instincts to claim his mate (love bite anyone?). I love shifter romances, and this book definitely felt more like a shifter romance than alien. hey, ifyky.
-Sohut has a tail! again, ifyky.
-More steamy scenes in this book and they happen much quicker than the first one.

What fell flat:

-the insta-love trope is in full swing. Maybe because this is the second book in the series the author didn't feel the need to really go into detail or build up a relationship, but Sohut went from tracking her to *wanting* her almost before he even saw her.. ok. but then for Cleo, who has been traumatized, running for her life, and fearing aliens for a year to see Sohut and literally a day later be willing to have sex with him? I thought her neck would break from the speed of that whiplash she's giving herself. Girl was desperate lol.

Overall, such a good book. Steamy, HEA, mates, & protective males. Definitely recommend for any paranormal romance readers, shifter romance readers, etc.

Sohut and Cleo

This is the second book in Riv’s Sanctuary series, and continues the story left off from the first book. This series is a spinoff from the author’s Captured by Aliens series, although there is no need to read that series first, the universe makes a little more sense if you do!

Sohut has been hired to track a missing alien animal. Only, he discovers that the alien isn’t an animal, but rather a human female, Cleo.
Cleo managed to escape from her captors, and has managed to live on her own for a year in an alien jungle. Her only companion is an alien she has for a pet, called Wawa.
When she spots the blue being coming to hunt and capture her, she is determined to keep out of his clutches, she never counted on the attraction between them...

Once more we find a human being trafficked for the High Tasqals, only Cleo was able to escape and stay alive on her own for a year. That doesn’t mean they aren’t still looking, though!
Cleo is a delightful heroine, strong and resourceful. Her unique upbringing has managed to keep her safe for a year, along with the help of her pet.
Sohut is the antithesis of his brother. Where Riv was strong, silent, and antisocial; Sohut is far friendlier and outgoing, and inclined to joking. His own upbringing has left him with his own set of scars, which allow the characters to bond.

As with the rest of the books featuring the pox-ridden, toad faced, Tasqals, there are some disturbing scenes and talk of rape, consider yourselves warned.

The story is fast paced, sexy, and filled with all kinds of action!
If you enjoy sexy sci-fi romance, and alien heroes with fangs and tails... then you’ll enjoy this series!

I could not wait for this book. I loved the first book in the series and I loved Sohut. When this book came out, I went back and forth on when to read it. I wanted to read it right away but I also wanted to save it for a special time. Then, once I started to read the book, I was again torn. I wanted to read the whole thing all at once and yet I wanted to savor it. Grrr. Lol

I immediately liked Cleo. She was compassionate, smart, strong, brave, and a survivor. After being in the jungle for over a year, I was confused that she had not constructed any traps or why didn't she have back up caves, stashes of supplies etc? She knew the Gori were looking for her and should have prepared more.

Sohut confused me in the beginning. How did he not know the Gori aliens he was working for captured not only animals but humanoids and other intelligent beings- treating them incredibly horrible and selling them as slaves?

That being said, I ADORED Sohut. He was so good natured, gentle, kind, smart, and witty. I loved his sense of humor and how he always tried to do the right thing.

Right away I knew Wawa was the slizz. I loved him too. I want one! He was so cute, affectionate, and protective. I loved how he was competitive with Sohut. It was hilarious when he would give Sohut a hateful glare and then snuggle sweetly against Cleo. Or, when Sohut would try to touch her and Wawa would smack his hand away.

The story had the perfect blend of lovable characters, humor, adventure, and romance.

Another human female, another of these big, blue aliens finding love. This time around, we have Cleo. Cleo's pretty awesome. She got away from her captors once and has been living rough (but free!) for the past year. She's wary of trusting anyone (understandable!) and Sohut's arrival into her territory puts her on edge.

WITH GOOD REASON! Because Sohut has been sent to hunt her down and bring her in (not realizing what it is he's been hired to hunt, mind you) and he's one alien who doesn't fail.

Needless to say, once Cleo and Sohut start communicating and working together THINGS HAPPEN. Sexy things, at times. But mostly just survival things. Because, you know, surviving is important. Of course, there are bumps in the road and the couple are put in danger a time or two. Good thing they're both the type to keep fighting and pushing forward even when the odds seem to be firmly against them.

Humans and aliens, man. I like them. I like the things they have to work through in order to end up together. I like how utterly devoted they both are once they find their balance. *thumbs up*

How is it that everyone got a better romance than Lauren?
Sohut and Cleo's story is so cute! And I technically cheated and read Nia and Ka'Cit's story first so they're little cameo in the epilogue literally gave me all the feels!! They're definitely still my favorite couple in the series, with Sohut and Cleo being a close second, and then wayyyyyy down on the list, is Giblet and his wife, and then a little bit further is Morpheus and his obsession with Nia's hair, and then we have whale poop, and then Lauren and Riv (blegh).
Quick Summary of the book:
Cleo has been stuck in the jungle for a year when Sohut, Riv's brother, is hired to capture her. He soon realizes that she isn't an animal, but an intelligent being, and decides he has to help her escape instead of turning her in. It is a bit insta-lovey, but I loved every bit of it. Sohut is nowhere near as much of a jerk as his brother is, and even during their misunderstandings in the beginnings he was always respectful and nice to her.
3.5/5 stars rounded up! I think they're so cute! And I love how they all have pets now- but Wawa is by far the best pet.

I liked it. I thought it was pretty sweet. Cleo was interesting she was pretty smart about things and listened to her gut like her dad taught her.

Sohut was sweet and hard at the same time an alpha male basically. It was pretty insta lovey not too bad, where they see each other and just jump each other but it kinda just happens lol. Because she doesn't trust him one paragraph then the next she's asking him to... Well I'm sure you can guess (wink, wink) this is an adult book. The adult parts were good and steamy.

The only problem I had was that I just didn't love it as much as the first book. I can't really say why I didn’t enjoy it as much but it was just so easy to figure out. I guess it just made it hard for me to want to read the rest. Its good for an adult alien romance, don't get me wrong. Maybe I read it when I just wasn't in the mood for a book like this idk lol. I may read it again at some point and I'll edit my review if my mind changes. We shall see...

Although it doesn't make me excited to read thethird book.

I’ve read the first two books of this series and have found the same thing occurs - I lose interest at about the half way mark. There were several things that just didn’t work for me.

The couple got together too soon. This made the second half of the story drag.

The heroine’s pet conveniently disappeared every time they were in trouble. This seemed off considering how protective it was.

The sex scenes lacked something. I found myself skipping those paragraphs.

The continual repetition of Sohut’s past. The author really wanted to make sure you felt sorry for him.

And lastly, I couldn’t get past the similarities between these two books and Dixon’s books right down to the pages prior to the prologue and the note from the author at the end. Is A.G. Wilde one in the same as Kati Wilde or Ruby Dixon? Either way this was the corsair brothers regurgitated. If I’m paying for a book, I’d like it to at least be original so I’m not feeling like I’m just buying the same book with a few slight differences.

Will not be continuing this series.

I liked it. I thought it was pretty sweet. Cleo was interesting she was pretty smart about things and listened to her gut like her dad taught her. Sohut was sweet and hard at the same time an alpha male basically. It was pretty insta lovey not to bad where they see each other and just jump each other but it kinda just happens lol. Cuz she doesn't trust him one paragraph ago then the next she's asking him to... Well I'm sure you can guess (wink, wink) this is an adult book. The adult parts where good and steamy. The only problem i had was that I just didn't love it as much as the first book.
I can't really say why I did enjoy it but it was just so easy to figure out what was going to happen I guess it just made it hard for me to really want to read the rest. Its good for an adult alien romance don't get me wrong maybe I read it when I just wasn't in the mood for a book like this idk lol. I may read it again at some point and I'll edit my review if my mind changes. We shall see...

Sohut’s protection
3⭐️
2.5🌶️

This was pretty much what you could expect from an Alien romance. While it did have a few things that stood out, it was in general just your average alien romance. Which in my opinion is exactly what I’m looking for. I read alien romances as a comfort because they’re predictable and easy to read. It’s one of the reasons why it’s my go to genres whenever I need a palette cleanser. I like that the characters had different stories and personalities though. Often when you read a series like this you tend get the same characters or stories recycled over and over again with a few twists. This was not the case in this series.
It wasn’t mind blowing, but it was exactly what I needed at that time to let my mind rest from binging some heavier romantasy reads. I would recommend this series to my fellow alien romance readers!

Ps this is a general review for all thee books of rivs sanctuary

Love this story!!!

H: Sohut U'xol Cal-Pholy (Alien, hired to find and capture the Cleo)
h: Cleo Barlow (Human kidnapped to Hudo III by aliens)
Cleo was captured with a group of other aliens and taken to another world. She was placed in a cage and then placed into this "truck" where the 2 alligator looking thing was delivering her to where she needed to go which was supposed to be an auction. By chance she was able to get away and she lived in the jungle (Koznia Jungle) for over a yr with her little friend she named WaWA. Comes, Sohut who is hired to find this creature, they didn't tell Suhut exactly who she is but when he finds her he immediately knows she is the one for him. I really like this story. I was able to listen (free) to book 1 & book 3 this one I had to read myself. I love the characters and how different Sohut is between his brother (from book 1) and his friend (from book 3).

This was the first book I read after a month long reading slump so it may have clouded my perspective. I wasn't thrilled with the first book, but I quite liked this one. I enjoyed the jungle atmosphere, Cleo's fight and drive to survive in an unknown jungle was endearing and admirable, her animal companion Wawa was a wonderful source of amusement, Sohut's thoughts as he was tracking her were an interesting perspective, the romance was good, and most of the book made sense. The ending is where it fell flat for me because it didn't seem very realistic. I don't know why the slavers didn't continue to pursue Cleo (I doubt they were immediately notified when she was sponsored), and also the last bit was all smut that just didn't hit right for me because it felt out of nowhere. Overall, not a bad book and I would be interested in seeing if Ka'cit and Nia get a story together.
