Everything changed the day a black dragon was born…
Cassarah is trapped in the life of being a noble woman whose family is looked down upon. Why you may ask? Because they earned their title rather as payment, rather than being born to the privilege. On the day Cassarah goes to court, finally about to be accepted by society, fate takes the reins and lands her on the hot sands of the Dragon Roost during a hatching.
When the black dragon chooses Cassarah and places his mark on her, they are bonded for life. Being claimed by this majestic creature is only the start of the adventure as secrets about her family's heritage come to light. Not only had her ancestors never been noble blood, they’d been mercenaries. A people who have been hunted down to the point of near extinction, but all that is about to change now that the black dragon has been born.
Will Cassarah be able to shake off the shackles of her noble upbringing to be the savior these people need? Or will the lies and abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother keep her from spreading her wings?
This is a why choose / reverse harem series where she builds her harem as she goes.
DNF at 50% (I'm surprised I lasted that long; it was torture) Buckle up, buttercups. This review ought to be a long ride. I am so sick of everyone controlling Cass's life except Cass. If I were her (thankfully I'm not) 90% of the people she met so far would have ended up dead by strangulation or stabbing. The only half-decent main character so far is Vasin. And he doesn't count as a person 'cause he's a dragon.
She seems to be staying with the mercenaries out of some misplaced sense of responsibility and pride. Because Cole said she wouldn't be able to do it, she was going to do it, because people said she was going to run away, she would stay. She doesn't owe them anything, and doesn't actually need to stay, which is something she doesn't seem to understand. The harassment she takes from everyone in general astounds me, because she doesn't even seem frustrated or angry about most of it. She knows she's in the middle of something big, but she doesn't ask for information, which frustrated me to no end. She has a few amazing talents, but acts like a damsel in distress. She can frickin' conjure up a magical bow and arrow in her hand and she prefers to hide and run. Every stupid thing she does drives me absolutely crazy and I just couldn't stand it. In conclusion, read at risk of your sanity. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I thought this was a nice introduction to a new series.
It was fast paced and that was almost too much. The heroine is bound to a black dragon, one that has not been seen in years and its appearance usually heralds change. The Royals don't want that so they want to kill the dragon, so the heroine and the dragon escape.
The bond between the heroine and dragon was instant. I didn't really like that. I would have expected more time to see it grow rather than be told that their bond is instant. The heroine also had a very fast development , lots of it off screen.
The men who I assume will be in the harem are unremarkable.
Not your usual find for me. Interesting concept and connection between dragons and those with birthrights. Birthrights itself has an incredibly fresh spin. There is a solid foundation with plenty of room for growth in this world. Enjoyed it greatly!
Kinda reminded me of Cinderella...well if Cinderella was a bad ass. Strong past and present established for Cass making her easy to attach too. What we see her overcome and how we see her grow it beautifully laid out. I can see a lot of action and romance in her future, but this book for me was a STRONG introduction to the world and who and what Cass becomes.
I don't know where to begin. The plot started out as great and I love dragons but the book couldn't keep me vested in it for long. I generally love the genre of books where the h or H is slowly finding their potential/ overcoming obstacles that life throws at you but the writing style is not intense enough for me to keep reading. DNF 25%. I guess some spiteful thoughts or actions from Cass when her mother hit her maid/friend would have made Cass more human to me. Compassion is not a switch that can be turned off or on. You either have it or your don't. I don't want perfect main characters in my books, I just want realistic ones.
DNF 50% Everyone is an a-hole & lacks any redeeming qualities. I’m including the FMC in this & I’m tired of it. They don’t want you, have some self-respect for once in your life & leave woman.
The vernacular to this book was just off. It drove me crazy throughout the entire book. It starts fine but then around the 25% marker becomes more casual and urban and just doesn't always fit. The book started out fantastic but just slowly slides downhill from there. Cass gives me whiplash with her decision making and her attitude. One page she is meek and mild and fairly consistent with how she started the book and the next page she is a defiant spitfire who isn't taking anything from anyone and has suddenly developed a backbone. The page after? She is back to how she started. There isn't anything wrong with either character types...just pick one or make the transition between moments make more sense. I wish I could say that the rest of the characters stood out but they didn't because I was too irritated with the mood swings of the fmc and the writing style bouncing back and forth between period english and urban english. It made the book hard to focus on.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Birthright is the first book in the Mercenary Queen series by Elizabeth Knight. It's full of magic, history, politics, and dragons. I love dragons and Elizabeth has managed to do a twist on the typical dragon story, I really enjoyed the story. This is a slow-burn single perspective reverse harem.
Mercenary is defined as (of a person or their behavior) primarily concerned with making money at the expense of ethics. Whenever I have come across mercenaries they have always been the bad guys, in books, in movies, they are the ones that kidnap the girl, tries to kill the hero, and is overall a pretty bad person. Elizabeth has managed to take this concept and flip it, the mercenaries are just a group of people, a kingdom within themselves and they aren't bad people. They have family, they have a culture and they are struggling to survive. I have never read a story that's centered around mercenaries and I find the concept highly interesting, Elizabeth has done a really good job of creating a story around people who are usually portrayed in a bad light and turning it into something else.
Cassarah is the main character, at the beginning of the story she is obviously smart and talented but she has a troublesome home-life. Her mother is more like a typical evil stepmother, she is cruel and abusive towards Cass and all she cares about is status and caste. She has done so much to her Cass, it's even affected Cass's self-worth but throughout this book, Cass grows. She starts to think better of herself, she is stubborn and is determined to prove to herself and those around her that she can do it, that she is worth something. Cass a super-smart, a hard worker, caring, and determined to become something stronger than steel.
While this is a reverse harem, it's a very slow-burn reverse harem, no steam yet but there are hints. The harem hasn't been set up yet, however, there are two or three potentials that may have made an appearance and if they have then I approve. Cole and Abbott both have Cass's back, they teach her, protect her, and are becoming people she trusts and believes in. While their relationship with her has been mostly in the practical moments I can't wait until they get a deeper connection, more emotionally involved.
For the most part, the story was quick and easy to read. I liked the new look on mercenaries but my favorite part is Cass's relationship with Vasin. Their bond is so special and after everything Cass has been through and will go through she needs someone in her corner, someone who will stay by her side and protect her no matter what, there is no judgment, no ulterior motives, just a pure relationship. The other few characters in the story kinda warmed my heart, they were more welcoming and caring than I thought they would be and I feel like those types of characters were needed for the story, so I am glad that they were there. The only problem I had was with Cass's dad, his responses to what was going on didn't make any sense and at one part something was said but it didn't line up with the rest of the story. It's not that big of a deal and didn't really affect the story too much.
Birthright is just the beginning and it ended on a heck of a cliffhanger. This story is filled with family secrets, shady royals, warring kingdoms, secret histories, betrayal, magic, and dragons. The story was very entertaining and I am looking forward to seeing where the story is headed.
Another amazing book from Elizabeth Knight. This story was amazing!!! I freaking loved it!!! Love dragon books. They are my favorite. Storyline is phenomenal. Characters are really good. This is a story I was able to get Into right away. Looking forward to reading the next one!!!
Absolutely love Elizabeth's writing, this is the 4th book I have read from her and she keeps getting better and better. This book is the story of Cass who has been beaten down by life and submissive to her mother and family duty. Her mother has sent to the court in order to claim her birthright and be presented in order to gain an advantageous marriage. While in court the Queen's dragons eggs begin to hatch and one of the dragon's bonds to Cass. Unfortunately for her this presents new sets of problems that will take her on a roller coast of a ride.
Birthright follows the story of Cassarah and her journey from being a lowly Nobel to a leader of mercenaries.
I absolutely loved the plot of this book and how the author gave us an intriguing tale that was completely unique. Cassarah was an incredible female lead and the story revolves around her was truly interesting.
The pacing was a little slow and while the world building was great, it felt like there was too much focus on beginning the book rather than the story itself.
super fast paced and fun read. slow burn but i appreciate getting to know the characters and guessing who’s going to end up in the crew (iykyk). going to dive straight into book 2!
More like 3.5 stars. The book was good, but a stepping stone the main action. Which I hope to see in book 2.
FMC was a roller coaster of emotions. Weak and submissive, to scared and whiny, to confident and skilled. Her little harem is slowly coming together, would like to see more of that in book 2 as well.
In Birthright, we're introduced to a new fantasy world with royalty, dragons, mercenaries, and intrigue. Cassarah is the FMC and this story takes her from being an intelligent but beaten down young noble to beginning to truly come into her own as a stronger person and future leader of the mercenaries. None of that change happens overnight and how she moves from the nobility to basically the opposite, is quite a process. I especially loved her bond that is formed with the black dragon, Vasin. Vasin has more knowledge than Cass because of the type of dragon he is and he's not only a major source of informational support for Cass, he's also loving to her and constantly building her up emotionally. I also think it's great that Ms. Knight gave us a FMC who loves old languages, history, research, and analyzing tactics and maps. These are strengths I don't often see in romantic leading ladies, but they're skills and interests that are particularly valuable when leading a group of people against new/unknown enemies where the past affects the present. Cassarah also has to build up the necessary skills that her up-bringing didn't give her - strength and endurance training, combat, horse riding, and weapons.
Birthright is just the start of the series and there's a good amount of world-building and character introductions. There's a lot more happening in this world than what Cass and her group are aware of and the action picks up later in the story, setting up for the bad guys and more conflict to come. This is a slow burn and there are hints of possible future love interests, but the focus of the story is not on romance at this point. The book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, in my opinion, there's just a lot still to be done for these characters as they learn what's happening.
The following comments are cumulative for books 1-3:
Ugh. Not the worst thing I've read by far, but I have some issues.
The series tries to be both high fantasy and reverse harem and isn't successful at either.
More page time is spent on mundane things than character development. The FMC spouts off moments of intellect, but is otherwise dumb as paste. Only a few of the consorts get enough page time for the reader to get an understanding of them. I only really remember 4 of them, after 3 books.
I just finished book three and there is finally (and suddenly) an escalation in the intimacy levels within the harem. This isn't a slow burn, it's glacial. Slow isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when you've got me wondering if I accidently KU'd a PG-rated series, then maybe the story could have used a little more balance.
As for the high fantasy aspects, it's like an attempt was made, but the author ran out of gas half way into the world build. High fantasy is all about the detailed lexicon, the languages, countries, and cultures. The devil is in the details of world-building. In this series, a lot of those details weren't fleshed out or ran afoul continuity issues.
Lastly, the grammar. Oh girl, the grammar. Meandering and awkward sentences and a drought of commas made, especially book three, a nightmare to read. I wasn't fond of the 21st century, inarticulate manner of speech in a story where people are riding horses and lighting torches. One would expect at least royalty and scholars to speak with proper diction.
I saved some highlights to illustrate some of these points but fair warning, they're heavily laced with profanity. Because sometimes nothing short of the word "fuck" will accurately convey my irritation.
Overall, it was a decent book. The pair bond idea and the time period along with the clan legends were neat ideas.
I will say I didn’t like that the vernacular of the book was very much modern times. I don’t think that in the age of dragons and prior to any sort of modern civilization people used phrases like “guys” “holy dragon balls” and their swearing was very different than today’s. I wish that it was more true to the era that the book is set in.
I am glad that the author has had so much growth in her writing, as the last book I read from her had me questioning whether I could continue reading her books but this is a great start to a series.
EDIT TO ADD: I found it a little rude that people have decided to message me that this review was "rude." My opinion is just that, my opinion. The fact that I do not like that the characters speak as though its 2020 doesn't detract from the fact that I liked the plot. It is still a good book. I stuck with this author because in the first book I read from her, I ended up sending 6 pages of edits to her PA in an attempt to help the author, but if this is how her staff treats any criticism, I'm out.
The more I think about this book, the more it feels like a cheap version of the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
I couldn't remember this girl's name for the life of me. Half the characters introduced have names so weird that they're impossible to remember. I pretty much forgot who was who right away. I should have probably taken notes or something.
Anyway, Cas was the daughter of nobility, though her family was looked down upon since they were granted their title a few generations back rather than being born into it. Her mother was an abusive asshole, and her father was too much of a simp to stand up for her. Beaten down by her circumstances, Cas was molded into a docile daughter and “proper” lady—until everything changed.
Stuff happens. A newly hatched black dragon, Vasin, chose Cas as his pair-bond, marking her as the Mercenary Queen. Except they don't really want a prissy, weak little noble girl leading them. Cas has a long road to prove herself to her people and then work to save their lives.
(Side Note: The Mercenaries are a group of people outside of the Norban(?) Royals command. They live rough and wild).
And so begins Cas’s story.
‼️ First thing to note: these books are practically clean!! I loved Cassarah as a character—she grew into an amazing and powerful FMC, and it was so rewarding to watch her come into her own. However, her prudish sensibilities regarding intimacy stuck around until nearly the last book. In Book 1, she doesn’t even give so much as a peck on the cheek to any of her guys. She’s uncomfortable with being alone in a room with them and barely handles something as simple as a touch on the hand or a hug.
There was one spicy scene at the end of Book 3. Book 4 had a few of them, but they were always rushed and never lasted more than a couple of paragraphs. The romance is an afterthought; the plot is the primary focus.
Cassarah's character was well-fleshed out and wonderfully written. However, some of her guardians barely had a personality.
Vasin, Cassarah’s dragon pair-bond, was one of the highlights of the series for me. Their relationship was heartwarming, and I loved how it evolved. The magic system, lore, and world-building were also standout features.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat. It was packed with action, betrayals, and adventure, keeping you guessing about who could be trusted.
Overall, an awesome series!

I'm very impressed and excited with the start of the Mercenary Queen series. I'm a huge fan of dragon books and with the majority of reverse harem books that I've read with dragons, the dragons are always shifters and not simply creatures that are included in the story. I loved that in this book the dragons were a bonded, almost familiar-like companion instead. The relationship between Cass and her black dragon, Vasin, was such a unique one and being able to see their conversations and how well they work together was one reason why this book hooked me as quickly as it did. Cass is strong in her own way, but she was brought up to believe she was weak and unworthy and treated that way as well. Vasin's support and loyalty were the catalysts in Cass starting to change her outlook and opinion of herself. She has a lot to prove in this new life of hers, both to herself and to those around her, but I see her really coming into her own as the series continues and as her relationships with those around her strengthen. This is a very slow-burn book, however, I have a feeling it will be well worth the wait once things actually do start happening. There are some definite hints about future harem members/guards and I'm looking forward to seeing who else will be added to Cass' group as she learns more about herself and her future responsibilities. I have a feeling that there will be many obstacles ahead of her and her group, some that were already introduced in this book, and others just hidden beyond the pages. Can't wait for the next book!
So let me start this by saying that this is the first book in a slow burn RH (my fav by the way) and even if that's not your bag I would still recommend this if you like any type of fantasy books.
As for my review I will say that it was little slow in the beginning and had me thinking that this was going to be a LONG journey for Cass but I was plesently surprised. Her growth is beautiful and I have a feeling I will be 1/2 in love with her by book 2. As for her potential men. . .I feel like they need little work. This book was to start the series their for I feel like the guys are going to need to have the most growth, I'm not attached to them yet except for Jade. . .I really like him. Yummy! Cole can suck one at this point.
What really shines in this book is the original thought and world build. I love thought of a birthright and dragon pairs. Its rich with mystery, suspense, betrayal and a learning to stand up for yourself. At this point you have so many potential bad guys that you don't know which one will be the real baddie, which I love.
This is already a GREAT start to this series and I can't wait to read what this author comes up with next!
Elizabeth Knight just showed again why she is one of my absolute favorite authors! This story was full of action, mystery, royalty, and birthrights. This story was extremely unique and unlike anything I have ever read. From the intriguing storyline, to the incredibly developed characters, to the fascinating creatures and the bond that they share.
This book just blew me away! For starters, Cass is super awesome! She’s is strong, determined, loyal, and kind. Her bond with Vasin is an incredibly cool concept and was written so flawlessly. Their connection flowed off the pages effortlessly and I was constantly enamored by it.
Then there was all of the other fantastic characters like Abbott, Cole, Jade and so on. Each one of them enhanced the story and brought even more depth. This storyline was unlike anything I have ever read. From the dragon bond, to the clans and mercenaries, to the royal feud, and so much more!
I cannot recommend this book enough! Just take a leap and read it and see exactly what I fell in love with!
I freaking loved this story. I love reading books that deal with dragons, bonding with dragons. It almost has an Eragon type of feel to it except that the heroine is a female. It so we have several clans and a kingdom. Okay so lets delve into the characters. We have Cassarah who is treated like crap by her mom. I mean I was surprised that she did not lose her sanity with the way her mom treats her, and her dad, well in some ways he is no better. So I was going back and forth about Cassarah, one because she seemed strong willed and was going to stand up to herself and then she would turn into a shell of herself. I can say that her character development is amazing. I was really into this story and wanting to know what was really going on. There is no sexy times but some really interesting hot guys. I was okay with it because I really wanted to know what Cassarah was going to do. Is she going to prove to everyone that she can handle it and get her hands dirty. Will she become a warrior/queen? I really want to know more.
Slow burn fantasy RH, it’s got dragons so I don’t really need to say anymore than that.
There is mention of parental abuse and the FMC starts off with none existent self esteem. It was wonderful to see Cass flourish once she was removed from her toxic mother. As previously mentioned this is a slow burn so there isn’t any romance yet but it’s being set up nicely with a few potential love interests introduced. This is a short read I completed in a few hours and I honestly loved it, I can’t quite put my finger on why I enjoyed this book so much it all just fit together so well and I had a big goofy grin on my face throughout. I wasn’t paying attention to % marker so the ending snuck up on me. I can’t wait for book 2.
When I first read the short description of this book, I could hardly wait to read it. Yes, being a huge fan of dragon stories and riders, I've been eagerly anticipated this arrival.
But wait, we talk about Elizabeth Knight here. She is known to spin it into her own tale. And wow, she did it.
This book has many layers; I recommend you to read this not once but twice or more. It is a tragic and heroic tale of becoming your own hero. Building a circle of support that lifts you up. Having that deep friendship and connection...
The world-building is absolutely fantastic. The characters are complex, and my only complaint is that I wanted to read on.
This book had me hooked with the whole concept right from the start! Royal courts are such interesting and intoxicating to read about. The politics, history and hierarchy are just fascinating, and Elizabeth knight's take was beautifully done. I loved everything about it, and the addition of the paranormal elements and dragons made this book an epic read. The slow burn feel gave me time to warm up to the characters and get to know them which made me enjoy the slower pace. The writing was great, keeping me reading long into the night wanting to know what is happening and where this story is headed. Cass is the type of character I wish I could be! Bring on more!
Totally blown away - such a great first book to kick off this series
I could not put this book down, it was honestly so good. It’s so well written with such fine detail that it just pulls you in. Cass is a fantastic main character, her life is thrown into complete chaos after attending court for the first time. Cass is underestimated by everyone including herself. She learns that she is anything but weak. She has some very hot men around her, can’t wait to see how each relationship builds. I really liked how unique the storyline is, kept me on the edge of my chair with not knowing what would happen next. Great ending, great twist. Can’t wait for the next book.
This was a pretty solid book. It was pretty fast-paced but still easy to follow. Overall, I think my biggest disappointment was that there wasn't much development of the bond between the FMC and her bonded dragon. It was just poof! Instant deep connection to an all-knowing dragon. The FMC's character development was a little to fast for me too. She goes from spending her whole life under the control of an abusive mother to being a strong leader in a very short period of time. It all just felt a bit rushed to me. That said, it was well-written and generally well-edited with only minor typos. While not on my top list of anticipated sequels, I will be reading the next one when it comes out.
Birthright was one book I was very sad when it ended. Elizabeth set a fast pace and from the first chapter I was hooked. It was a fresh story and I loved the dragon's in the book. I'm very partial to them. I applaud the authors style in showing the different forms of strength. When we meet the female character Cass I thought oh dear, honestly, I was pleased with what a strong character she turned out to be. I also liked how mentally we need to change our perception to over come our problems. I will definitely be chasing all of the books by this author down.
Birthright is definitely a one of a kind book. The storyline is completely unique. I love Cassarah's character. She grows so much through this first book. She needed to get away from her mom to grow to the person she is meant to be. Vasin is definitely a favorite of mine. What girl wouldn't love a sweet dragon like him! Out of the guys we have met so far, I think Abbott is my favorite. He wants to make her a stronger person but doesn't do it with the attitude that Cole has. I am looking forward to book 2 so we can explore her world more and she can become the Queen she is destined to be.
