Two uncles from vastly different worlds. One orphaned child. Will a conspiracy that bridges an ocean somehow build a family, or will state secrets keep Eric and Dan apart forever?
Eric is a genius. He’s a professor of environmental studies at an Ivy League university, an inventor, and one of the most respected scientists in his field. He doesn’t think about his birth family much, and the feeling is mutual – or he thinks it is, until a call from a local hospital throws his carefully ordered world into chaos.
Dan has seen and done a lot in his time as an Army Ranger. Thrown into civilian life by an injury, he’s happy to work for Five Star Security doing what he does best – until he gets a call from his hometown with devastating news.
His beloved older brother, Chris, has been killed in a car accident, along with his bride, Selene. Custody of their amazing four-year-old daughter has been left not to Dan, with whom all three were close, but to Selene’s younger half-brother, Eric – a man Dan has never met and who didn’t bother showing up for the wedding.
Dan is devastated. Finding Eric to be handsome and kind, if reserved, doesn’t help. Selene was wonderful, but her whole family was a pack of vipers. Eric can’t be any different, can he?
It doesn’t take long for Dan’s boss to figure out why Selene and Chris would leave Ada in Eric’s custody. Selene was a member of the royal family of Corvia, and Eric has managed to avoid the spotlight for the past decade and more. As the investigation into the car wreck shows it was no accident, Dan and Eric must join forces to keep their shared niece safe.
But can they keep their hearts safe from each other – especially when old secrets come to light that threaten their newfound love?

Everyone is pure evil in this book. Except for the good guys, of course. They are purely good.
The evil Darth Vader of a father is different. He takes an alternate root: turns 180 in a blink, like a switch, from bad to good. It was very disappointing. Yes. It was.
The insta-love, tho not my pet peeve, took me by complete surprise here. Too soon and too messy for the L word, in my opinion.
Both good characters loved a good monologue and all the evil ones loved to stand still to listen.
About the series: I really enjoyed book 1 and gave it 4 stars. After reading this installment, however, I don’t think I will continue.
Well I didn’t expect it this early but my first dnf of the year. I just can’t. Wtf. Maybe cause I’m Ace, but how are we in a serious moment, your brother just died and you just found out a stranger to you is getting your niece. Why is your first thing to do is sexualize him. Then after being a complete dick to him you kiss him. This in the matter of one day. I’m sorry but no if you’re just writing for the smutt say that. Dnf 26%
A quick and easy read that would have been entertaining enough if it wasn't for the fictional kingdom of Corvia. With every detail added, it makes less sense, quickly becoming so jarring it completely ruins the flow. I don't expect complex characters or an amazing plot from a book like this, but the annoyances add up. I got this book for free and still don't feel like I got my money's worth.
This was a fast, escapist type of read. Think old school Harlequin vibes. Some of the details didn’t quite make sense, but I’m a sucker for secret royalty so it didn’t bother me all that much.
Eric, a law professor at an Ivy League school and estranged from his family, has his world shook up when he’s informed his sister and her husband were killed in a car accident and he is the chosen guardian of a niece he didn’t know he even had. Eric also has a secret he’s kept from the people in his life in Boston. He’s a prince, who fled his country after scandal in his youth.
Dan, who was active Ada’s life and a bodyguard, doesn’t understand why out of all people to leave Ada with Eric was chosen. He hates Eric on sight for the fact that he has the capability of taking Ada away from Dan. Also, why with Selene’s family? He knew that her family was horrible. That’s why she moved so far away from home.
Eric was too much of a nice guy at times and it bordered on fake. Dan was a bit too angry in the beginning and then a quick snap of the fingers and he was attracted to Eric. Andreas and his aide, there were a little over the top.
However, I liked the way Eric and Dan worked together to take care of Ada. They focused on her safety and happiness. I liked the forethought Eric had when he fled from Corvia and started his own life in the US. He was strategic and found a way to live his best life. Eric did his best to be better than the royal family and he was. This is why I could see Dan being attracted to Eric. He got to see who Eric truly was outside of his family.
If you are a fan of dialogue, like me, you’ll enjoy reading this. There was a lot of talk between characters, but it was easy to follow and pushed the plot along at an even pace.
I'm starting to think J.V. Speyer has a thing for a random out-of-the-blue kiss and then it being sort of ignored... So far two of two books in this series have one, I'm interested to see if book 3 does as well, haha.
This felt a little instalove-y, and I'm not big on royals (I'd totally leave Eric alone, haha!). Still I was really intrigued by the various suspense storylines in this book - what actually happened to Eric and Dan's siblings, the various custody battles over their surviving child Ada, and what underhanded, evil thing Andreas will try next.
I love the way Eric and Dan work together to take care of and protect Ada. Eric thinks he's not good with kids, but he speaks to Ada in such a way that he's treating her as a person who has the understanding to accept real, rational explanations. He doesn't baby her, but he also doesn't treat her in a way that expects her to be above her level. For someone who squashes down all of his own emotions, he is so intuitive about recognizing and accepting the feelings of others - and letting them know it's okay and normal to feel the way they do. It was just really lovely to see someone confirming the validity of people's feelings, and understanding that their actions - which are often negative towards himself - are driven by a place of emotion. I also wanted to hug him and tell him that even though someone is dealing with pain, it doesn't mean he should have to take the brunt of that.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
Royals, according to this book, are a bunch of loons, and not in the fun way either. The fictional monarchy of Corvia, from the king and down the whole line of succession, are a group of rowdy, best case scenario, and, on a specific case, deranged people.
A dysfunctional family, to say the least, and I was glad Eric got away young. Far from that toxicity, at the time the events of this story unfolded, he turned out to be an exceptional man. Centered, reliable, caring and big hearted. I really liked everything about him, especially the fact he took responsibility for his niece, even if scared at the prospect, and did everything in his power to protect her. I enjoyed seeing how he, together with Dan, made Ada's wellbeing their priority, putting aside their initial distrust.
Feelings between Eric and Dan kinda sneaked up on them and they were so, so cute. The way they found things to appreciate in each other felt like they both slowly revealed a wonderful gift wrapped in ugly paper, from their first antagonistic meeting up until they fell in love. They definitely need the closeness and understanding when danger increased and they seemed close to losing everything.
I lot happened in this book. Family drama, scheming and plotting, mystery and tragedy. But amidst the intrigue and ugliness, I found unshakable friendships, outstanding strength of character and feelings, sweetness and love. Most of all, the wonderful bond of a new found family. The ending, though, I didn't see coming. Kudos to the author for the lovely surprise.
Ex-soldier Dan and exiled prince Eric are thrown together when Eric’s estranged sister dies, and leaves custody of her 4 year old daughter to Eric. There’s initial tension: Dan’s lost his brother; Eric has nothing but bad memories of a sister who tormented and ostracized him when alive and even blackmailed him from beyond the grave. Dan’s parents are toxic and homophobic. The royal family is toxic, homophobic, and at least one is homicidal. This novel is a great fit for people who love nonstop drama and villains that are over-the-top awful. Eric has the patience of a saint: he is mistreated by literally everyone in the novel, including Dan at first, but manages to hang on to his sanity, his patience, and his desire to do right by his niece. Every single betrayal that is possible, he experiences. It’s a lot-- but he keeps going. He’s smart, he’s resourceful, and even though Dan is the ex-soldier, he’s the one who thinks tactically and takes on most of the physical risks. I really enjoyed him as a character. On the relationship front, it was nice to see Dan take ownership of his misplaced anger at Eric, work past it, and to fall in love with him.

Eric is a quiet unassuming man, living a quiet life away from his family until he gets news of his sister's untimely passing, making him the guardian of his precious niece Ada. Dan is Army Ranger-turned bodyguard is devastated by his brother's passing and is quite surprised when he discovers his beautiful niece is now in the custody of his late brother's brother-in-law. They do not quite see eye-to-eye on some things, but on one thing they do agree: Ada is important and they will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.
I loved this book. I do not usually go for criminal elements in a romance, but this one was very written. It had just enough drama and action to be suspenseful, but light-hearted enough to portray the love and passion present and developing between the MC's. I was surprised at the turn of events and was so glad when they finally clear up the problems they were facing. I really enjoyed the way Eric spoke with Ada, like she was a small-sized person, instead of just a child who could not understand anything. The MC's had great chemistry together and I loved that they got their HEA.

Delightfully adventurous and suspenseful! Eric, is estranged from his birth family. He is a genius, a professor an inventor and a champion of environmental science. He is content with his life until he gets a tragic call and finds out he is the guardian to his niece, Ada. Dan, is a medically boarded Ranger who works for Five Star Security. He is devestated to get the news that his older brother Ben and his adorable wife, Selene were killed in a car accident. He is surprised to learn custody of his niece, Ada is given to Selene's brother, Eric. He presumed Eric was a useless as the rest of Selene's family. Many conflicts are introduced to complicate Eric and Dan's lives the most important of which is Selene and Eric are part of the royal family of Corvia. The accident was no accident and Ada and Eric are targets. Can Dan protect his beloved niece and Eric? Do they identify the assasin? Can Dan keep Eric and Ada safe? The romance is sweet and the movign pieces are great. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book really brings the feels, and it's an emotional, angsty ride. Two very different men meet and (eventually) bond over caring for their orphaned niece. Erik's estranged half-sister and Dan's beloved brother were killed in a car accident, and left custody of their daughter to... Erik. Needless to say, Dan has some hard feelings, especially since he believes her family are all venomous snakes. He assumes that includes Erik. Then, they find out the car crash wasn't an accident. The two men will need to work together if they want to protect their niece and find out what happened.
This story has two great MCs in Dan and Erik, an accident that was anything but, tension, drama, mystery, suspense, dysfunctional families, passion, and all the emotional feels. It was a great read that kept me hooked until the end.
I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
This is book two in the series and I enjoyed it more than the first one. Eric and Dan were so perfect together. Tow strangers who never met united in tragedy to help take care of the niece who needs them more than ever. Dan started out disliking Eric, though his anger was just really a front for the grief he was feeling. In comes the brother of his sister-in-law, who he's never met, who's been charged with raising the niece that he loves more than anything. Once Dan gets past his initial grief and dislike, he realizes that Eric is not the person he thinks he is. As they unite to keep there niece safe from a family that means her no good, they realize that the chemistry between is strong and find their way to love. I enjoyed Dan and Eric so much. The way that they fought everybody just to keep their little family safe was wonderful. Them finding love out of a tragic event was beautiful. Definitely enjoyed this book a lot.
I was very interested at first, but eventually it got a bit TOO much... Eric, or the idea of him, was an interesting and compelling character, but every one of his relatives was cartoonishly evil to the point where I couldn't take it seriously. Both characters are somehow too emotionally healthy for their situation; despite everything there is no conflict between them because they keep going "oh he's only lashing out because he's upset" or "he's so smart and reasonable and cute, I'm being a jerk for being a bit rude" so it felt stale to me. And then they fell in love a bit too fast for my tastes.
My rating is somewhere between 4 and 5. I really liked this story but not as much as the first book. You have to suspend a lot of disbelief and I was buying into the drama, suspense, blackmail and backstabbing within Eric's family until the last chapter. Dan's family was no picnic either but nowhere as horrible as Eric's and he was tight with his late brother Ben. The family of choice totally makes sense here.
The end was too unrealistic for me after the initial drama of Eric's banishment and reasons of his asylum in the USA. I won't put any spoilers here but the end feels false considering religious beliefs and the rights of succession that are practiced very much the same way everywhere in the world. I think a more realistic HEA would have worked much better for the story. Overall it was an exciting story and I'm eager to check other books by J.V. Speyer.
Wow! I just finished this story and the emotions that swept through me when I read the story of Dan and Eric and the small bundle of joy named Ada. This story had all the feels, but some were very sad when you see intolerance and hate from your own family. Love is love and the love found in this story was so right. They say one can’t choose family and Eric made a smart decision to distance himself from the toxic environment early. He made a life and had a respected career away from the evil, but circumstances made it impossible to continue when he was names guardian to a niece he never knew existed and the royal family and American family fight for custody. This story was wonderful and has a HEA that I thought was rightly deserved. I will be reading more by this author for sure! Loved the story, the characters, and a little girl named Ada!
Royals is the second book of the Bodyguard series. You can read each book of this series as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading all books in order to get maximum enjoyment.
Eric is a Royal. But he left his royal life to have some peace from his family. Oh and also he is a genius. When he gets a call, that his sister has died and has left her small child in his care, he is very surprised, as he hasn't known that he even has a niece. Dan is a bodyguard. He is grieving about his brother and is expecting that he will take in his niece. But much to his surprise, the parents have made different plans. Eric needs desperate help from his niece, so both agree to take care of her. Soon they discover some family secrets and betrayals.
Ohh this story is packed with suspense and sweet times. I loved the mix!
Royals by J.V. Speyer is the second book in the Bodyguards series. It is a contemporary MM romance about two very different men coming together for the benefit of their orphaned niece. But for added entertainment and excitement, one is a prince, the other is a bodyguard, and the little princess is in danger of falling into the hands that her birth parents never wanted her to be in. Suspence, mystery, angst, humor....a building of a family and an embracing of love.... this story had me feeling feels and smiling at the ending. The characters are fantastic snd I loved how they interacted, throwing out preconceived notions snd really getting to know each other.. Definitely a book I would reread and recommend to others.
A reluctant prince & a soldier, brought together by a darling little girl! Wow!
I am really loving this Bodyguards series! This entry has it all: royalty, betrayal, attempted kidnapping, an accident that isn't one, unexpected parenthood, doting uncles, and a darling little girl. Ooh, and sexy times! Come. Join reluctant prince Eric and bodyguard Dan as they work together to protect their niece from both their families. When an accident turns into murder, and family members turn hostile, they will do everything to protect their little princess. Don't fret, HEA is assured. You are gonna love this book! Oh, and for a great read, get the first book. This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.
This was a very dramatic and intense read. Emotions were very high especially with our ex-soldier Dan. He was already a bit of an angry man and add in more losses and an innocent little girl and he just wanted to make everything right. Eric our prince was a very determined guy and had to overcome a lot with his evil family. And I do mean evil. I appreciated that in this tale the bad people really are bad people. There is not redemption for them. Dan and Eric build a special bond with each other saving their adorable niece and building a family. Once Dan gets past his initial anger him and Eric have a hot and sweet and chemistry together and the drama cannot come between them! Definitely a page turner to get to the HEA!
I absolutely love this bodyguard series and although the ARCs were random and the books were not in number format it was still enjoyable!
Two opposites attracted to each other, one a bodyguard and the other a prince in hiding, are connected in two ways.
One by being guardians and protectors to a sweet, sassy four year old girl who is their niece and two by the all consuming passionate attraction they have for each other…
I loved how their dynamic started as uncles who hate each other and then as lovers who cannot get enough of each other although there was a time limit on their relationship….
I enjoyed both the romantic story line and the evil plot line that keeps you as reader glued to your screen!
I voluntarily received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews for an honest review.
This is the second book in the Bodyguards series and can be enjoyed as a standalone.
Can a prince in exile and an ex soldier find common ground and maybe more?
This is a sweet hurt/ comfort, opposites attract romance. Two men from different worlds come together and bond over the tragedy in their lives.
This one takes dysfunctional families to a whole new level with sabotage, Vendetta, revenge and all sorts of crazy. The writing style of the author worked for me and the characters were likeable, relatable and enjoyable to read. Overall a sweet contemporary romance that will pull you in from the very start.
Two very different men meet under the worst of circumstances. Each having lost someone they love and now having to work together to care for and protect their shared niece. Royals will take the reader on quite the roller coaster of a ride. Full of action, angst and so much more I couldn't stop turning page after page. Along the way Dan and Erik catch feelings for each other. Will they be able to work together and achieve the HEA they both want? The way that they fought everybody just to keep their little family safe was wonderful. I loved seeing them find the happiness they so deserved.
Eric was amazing, I wanted to wrap him up in bubble wrap and hide him from the nasty world. Dan was alright. A brilliant storyline. 3 stars for Eric and housekeeper.
But too much was not real. Like Ada not being upset about her parents dying, they never had a funeral or cleaned the house out. Again with the hate each other to love in 1.2 second a bit unbelievable. (Obviously temp plate writing). Dan never defending Eric until the end. Erics father apologising at the end and was accepted (he let his son be raped, yes it was rape). Then the worst thing of all Eric become king. So they did a 180. To many unbelievable things.
Another story claiming to be a romantic suspense that is remarkably light on the romance. In fact, to be honest, there IS no romance. Two men, uncles to the same little girl, are forced together by the need to protect her, and discover that they have chemistry. Not that we see that discovery play out in any realistic kind of way at all. One minute Dan Marshall, bodyguard, is snarling at Dr. Eric Alawi, Corvian prince undercover, and the next he's kissing him. The suspense portion of the story was wild and added a good amount of tension. The romance...almost non-existent. I'm disappointed, again.
DNF at 34% it’s just too stupid. maybe I’ll rant about it later but it’s so dumb. my poor crying brain cells will implode themselves if I have to read “certified genius professor-of-5-university-subjects prince Eric who speaks 17 languages” think or say another utterly stupid thing. or be told how sad and traumatized the 4 year old is from her parents dying literally in front of her while she doesn’t cry even once. or told Dan is so sad about his dead beloved brother that he displays no grief at all except for 3 seconds one time bc the rest of his time is spent randomly kissing Eric and then jacking off and then sort of doing his job.
If you think you're heard all you could about dysfunctional families...you haven't! This family is beyond crazy...and vindictive...and abusive...and sick!
Just be glad that we have two wonderful men who have found each other in the middle of all the murder and mayhem, because they need to lean on each other, and learn from each other, to make it!
Plus there is one little girl who keeps both of them working together...even when they're striving to keep her safe...while international intrigue is all around...along with the paparazzi! Or fans...whichever you prefer.
Royals By J.V. Speyer Main Characters: Eric and Dan I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 5 out of 5 stars This is a contemporary m/m romance. These two men come together over a tragedy in both their lives. Eric a prince in exile and Dan an ex-soldier, now bodyguard. I loved the way the two of them weathered their problems in their lives surrounding their niece. I also liked the fact that it took them a while to get to the physical side of their love for each other. Both men were great. Hope to read more by this author.
Wow! I was sucked into this story and it did not let me go. I seriously loved this story! Eric was a prince in exile and Dan was a soldier. They are two totally different men coming together to care for their niece who has lost her parents. They must work together to keep their little princess out of the wrong hands! There is danger, suspense, intrigue, mystery, and humor. I am voluntarily leaving a review from an advanced copy that I was gifted from the author. Thank you so much for letting me read your art. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
This awesome storyline had tragedy, plotting dastardly deeds, grief, family, strength in the mc’s, most side characters I could connect with and one evil person, and an adorable girl named Ada. It was easy to fall in love with Dan and Eric, had humour and a slow burn romance. I could read this again.
I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book for my honest opinions of which I’m under no obligation to do so. I absolutely recommend this book.
