Understanding how life works is a question for the ages. This book takes a unique approach in its attempt to answer it.
Through a discussion of the most beautiful, funny, memorable personal anecdotes and experiences, this book discusses those aspects of the world's political, cultural, military and geographical history that have affected Indian life and culture.
The stories of the author, his country and his entire planet weave in and out of each other and deliver a unique perspective to life. We follow the author's story, from loose upbringing and serious negotiations with his parents, through his life as a young businessman in other countries - trips that allow him to reflect on the similarities and differences between Indian culture on the one hand, and most significantly Chinese and Korean society on the other. Facing a series of crises since childhood, we see him transform to a successful adult who pursues his dreams of participating in an Ironman triathlon and flying a Fighter-jet. Also inside, is an ode to the love of cricket, which would bring smiles to everyone.
The author highlights trends, which are easy to miss out in daily lives. These entertaining anecdotes and their historical, economic and spiritual causes are blended into a personal history that covers not only the main aspects of Indian culture but ties them to political and economic developments on the world scale.
Throughout this book, therefore, what is shown is that all ordinary lives are significant and connected. It causes the reader to reflect on his own life and culture, revealing the ties that bind us all together.
I have been a firm reader of autobiographies all through my life. And needless to say, almost each one of them majorly presents the life story of an individual from his childhood and the events that shaped his or her overall personality. But this impeccable work by Mr. Tarun differs on this very front. Though it does offer a holistic view of his life and a sneak peak into his moments of brilliance but mainly it acts as a reflection of author's socio-economic and political outlook of the world and how the roots or the foundation of whatever is happening today can be traced back to the 80s and 90s.
The book is quite an eye opening account of author's struggles not only with the outside world but with his own family. How he assumed the title of IRONMAN by sheer dint of his hard work and immense will power is in itself an inspiring tale to read and implement . The way he has given answers to so many questions related to Chinese development , Indian economy and Indo-Pak rivalry proves that besides being a self made man, he does hold a wide arsenal of information well complemented with facts and huge knowledge.
The title is quite captivating and the cover is full of pictorial graphics which forms the fabric of our nation. The analogies given in the book is treat to skim through and at various instances, reader will find himself pondering over deep research that author has gone through in presenting a neat account of things .
Author Tarun has done a great job while writing this book. His writing is well written because he has talked about every topic by keeping an open mind which is very important. You will not find lines this book that is favouring a particular person, religion, caste, party etc. There are a lot of points that you can discuss with your friends while reading this book.
The author had successfully completed the IRONMAN competition which is my favourite part of the book. For those who don’t know about this competition, it is a competition which includes 4 km swimming, around 185km of cycling and around 40km of a marathon which has to be completed in a single day. You will get to know a lot about this competition.
The author has discussed a lot about political instability in India which have caused a lot of trouble to us. Tarun has beautifully explained the march of BJP from the 1999 election to becoming 2014 majority party in the elections. The author has gone through many pros and cons of the politics that have affected the common man. Especially the scams that has effected the telecom industry was one of the interesting topics
Triumph Amidst Crisis by is a journey of a man through the greatest and the toughest socio-eco-political transition of the world. The world from 1980s to the 2000s, and the major events addressed, this book is a newer anecdotal perspective for the economist in me. The stealing aspect of the book is the entire political history narrated to the reader providing a framework for the impact of the events.
The book is the author's life- from his childhood and equation with his parents to his life as a businessman travelling around the world drawing a comparison of cultures, his love for cricket, his participation in the Ironman Trillathon being a few of the adventures. But what sits the most is his experience via all the crises. We get references from 1991 elections, the BOP crisis of 1991 to the Boom years of 2003-2008, the Kashmir wars, the Mumbai attacks of 26/11. The span so long that the book becomes an information enriched autobiography.
My attraction was a little biased to be honest. From all the events mentioned, I had a little studying done on the eco-political ones courtesy to my academia. It was fascinating to read an anecdotal point of view so different from the technical ones I got my hands on. It gave me a newer way of looking at this crises.
It is a great read for anyone who enjoys socio-eco-political world events or autobiographies or anecdotes! You get it all.
TRIUMPH AMIDST CRISIS A PERSONAL WORLD HISTORY OF LIFE IN INDIA BY TARUN DEV SHARMA From the title to the cover and then to the content, all is amazing. You will feel life in the 90s of India and you will feel yourself in the book by the great writing style of Tarun. One part of the cover, I noticed before anything which is full of information, is the caste system of India, not only by words but also by the picture as well. The beginning of the story, really made you read: “Born in the 80s, grew during the 90s, started breaking eggs in the 2000s, hardened in the 2010s.” Really as the dear author said, that is an extraordinary story. Keep writing Tarun. With best wishes
Being born up in 1990's and exuberance middle class family, the author shares his success story and the demeanour behaviour of the world going on that time. The lambasting times of india which were very tough for both the nation and its citizens, those were some unfathomable and impenetrable years for us which created a chaos in the nation. Highly recommendable... Wise and insightful read :)
The book is based on personal life experiences of Tarun Dev Sharma. This book will take you to a reading tour about History of India & the life experience of Tarun Dev Sharma related with it. A very nice book with a well-defined incident in Indian history according to their occurrence & how it impacted the peoples lives.
The book takes you on a journey of India from 80's to the current times. It is an interesting read. The instances in the book are supported by photographs. Although, it is more relevant to Indian readers, it can be read by all, as there are footnotes to explain the foreign elements. It is a non-fiction and sort of autobiographical. To sum it up,it's a story that covers the development of a man and his country over a period of three and a half decade. A story that'll inspire the readers and even motivate many to see their life in a different light.
Triumph Amidst Crisis is an autobiographical book. It is a complete picture of India and it's history from 1980 till today 2020. Tarun Dev Sharma has used quite simple and amazing language. He not only highlighted the major events that happened in his life but also a brief history of India. Whatever he felt, faced, and experienced, he described that all. The most interesting thing is we always want to read history by foreigners. What we missed is a native citizen view about that country. This book is about a citizen who suffered, travel and social and political and religious experiences he had and portrayed them truly into his book. It is not only time which is going one, but the thing that matters is how much changed we are from our pastime. Tarun Dev Sharma from his childhood till today is a hard-working person. His personal development is an inspiration for us to do something bigger and meaningful in life. Being a hero and Ironman for friends and kids and future generations are possible because of what he did and are doing in his 40 years of life. "The more you read the more you will feel it close to your heart." How beautiful it is! We read not only the writer's life but also the history of India. There are things like the caste system, Sati Parton, British rule over India and conflict between India and Pakistan, such topics become important to listen to and read when a native is telling the details according to his perspective. All the major incidents that left their impacts on the psychology of people or the history of India is mentioned in that book. Also, how India grow and developed over the years in its economic and social status. Especially the debatable topics are deeply discussed by the writer in the book as well. Ending of the book, l like that. Motivational and inspiring to me. A push to work hard for getting my destination.
One different point:- This is one point that disturbed me while reading this book. 1. As a Pakistani reader, l am a little hurt. Because the writer is telling only one side of the story. What Pakistan did to India, how they lost many lives and bad circumstances during war. But he is not telling what India did in return. Despite all the differences between our cultures, it is a personal world history of life in India. So we should read to get more knowledge about India and life from 1980 till 2020.📚
I would recommend to all the readers that must read this book about the history of India. Also, to those, who want motivation in their life.❤
To put it concisely, Triumph Amidst Crisis is a record of chronological events from the author's life from the very small, personal scale to the huge, international scale and how the big scale events impacted the small ones. All in all, the book was a great read for me with the heavy Indian context as well as the aspect of relatability in some cases. The author has a good understanding of the subjects he discusses about, and is able to convey it well with lucidity. Complex economic and political matters were thrown light on with a fairly comprehensible language. The first half was quite an intriguing section with the childhood stories which introduced the relatability element. The historical, economical, religious and political accounts throughout the book were majorly informative and thought-provoking. For me, learning about the Chinese culture and how globally impactful whatever they do is, was new and I now have a different outlook towards it. Several chapters like that of Cricket, the Mumbai Attacks and the gradual Indian advancement throughout the text hit close to home. At the later second half is when we get events prominent in the author's life that have an inherently optimistic outlook and is sure to boost your motivation exponentially. The book started on a great note and ended on an even greater one. I give this book a 4 star rating since it proved to be a good and wholesome experience because of a personal connect with subjects of national importance and the in-depth delving into rather esoteric topics. Although there were places of a subtle bias, that can be overlooked considering a first person view of the events. I would, no doubt recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about India and its culture and all its major vicissitudes in the last four decades. There are also brief footnotes to any jargon in the text to add reference to the uninitiated.
"Social equality has been only been a fantasy in India- one which is striven for but never achieved."
Triumph Amidst Crisis by @chroniclertds isn't like any other autobiography but a biography that discusses the aspects of the world's political, cultural, military and geographical history that have affected Indian life and culture.
Born in 80s, our author has a keen interest in observing his surrounding and how everything happening around him is shaping his life and personality.
Three reasons to read this book- 1. It's interesting and as I mentioned above really informative (not only facts related to Indian history are discussed but many other facts related to China, America, Soviet etc are discussed). 2. It's not preachy or self boosting kinda autobiography. We're presented with daily life routine as meagre as getting LPG Cylinder from subsidy or the school life, witnessing political rallies, business trips without any prejudice. Readers are free to form their own ideas. 3. If you're born in 80s or 90s , you can connect to this book on whole new level, it's nostalgic and raw.
Also, this book contains various photographs related to important event in world history and author's personal history which is really catchy as I haven't read a book with real pictures in a while. These pics make this book stand out of the crowd.
Moreover, the central idea of how the big events of world affects the ordinary lives is captivating.
I learned so much about my own country from this book and realised how ignorant I've been all these year.
If you're adding this book to your tbr let me tell you the epilogue is so so great.
Triumph Amidst Crisis is a detailed account of the author Tarun Dev Sharma's life journey to his present age. In this book, he talks about the events that shaped his life, alongside the political, and economic transition India witnessed in the 1980s and '90s. The book consists of 265 pages. Positives: The author talks about the meaning of life and its purpose. He takes us through the various stages of his life, and how his vision and aspirations have changed over the years. There is a very positive message in the book that you are never too late or too far away from fulfilling your desires. Nothing can deter you if you have the will to do something, even if it takes you to the faraway land and unknown terrains. He is well-traveled and talks about various flights he has taken in his 35 years on the earth. He gives us deeper insight into China's demography, politics, and work culture. He takes us through the journey of various adventures he has undertaken. There is an element of nostalgia for the kids born in the eighties in India. Negatives: As a reader, I found a few flaws in the book. The book feels like a daily journal entry to me. I wish there were a little more base to it. The events in the book felt very textbookish. The story transgresses into history, politics, economics, and geography, the majority of the book feels like the text from a coursebook. In my opinion, the political and social upheaval that was happening in the country while the author was growing up, should have been interwoven with the events of his life, and how it created the ripples in his life or in the life of someone known to him. The book lacks transition, in one paragraph there is a mention of something major happening in the country, and in the next paragraph he talks about his life, it's abrupt It doesn't let you hook to the narrative for very long. It's hard to delve into a book that lacks a major storyline. The book that gives us so much information about the real-life incidents wrapped up in history should have a structure, this book fails at that level. Certain chapters stretch way too long, they are painstakingly detailed and long. As an author one must know that the readers do not share the same passion about the thing one is passionate about, therefore the chapter can be cut short to keep the interest of the reader. There are certain chapters where I did not agree with whatever was presented. I felt there was a need for a little more research, especially on the chapters that covered the country's historical past. There were a few events that were missing from the book, though I found them to be impactful. For example, General Musharraf visiting his home in New Delhi on his visit to India. Wing Commander Abhinandan's capture by Pakistan and then the high voltage release drama and the emotions it evoked. Overall it's a good attempt but lacks the mass appeal and nuances of a seasoned writer.

Every human being is different and each and everyone of us has a whole different story to tell. Author, Tarun Dev Sharma (oops!! Analyzing the structure of the autobiography , the way writer arranges the childhood around and the historic events, facts are emphasized and are concealed. Take into consideration the style of the narration is outstanding . There are gaps in the facts and events that has splendid the logical order of narration. The most important event and remarkable accomplishment in the writer’s life was Ironman Triathlon as not many of you might not know about it . Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races , consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile run, raced in that order. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Specific word choices made in the book reveal much information about the writer and his will to represent his life experience was marvelous . The language used is so simple and self-representating . Must read for everyone who is interested in the historic moments of India from 1980's to early 2000's.
📕 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 Anecdotes stir up laughter, discloses the truth in a general way of humor and knowledge. In this book, the author describes his life; his boundaries with people around him, sixes with his parents, fours with his travelling and no balls with his business investment. Why boundaries and sixes and fours and no balls? Well the author love(d) cricket. Heard about multifaceted earthling? Such is the author. His participation in Ironman Trillathon was spectacular. But the greatest experiences came through the crisis in India; socio- economic and poitical transitions influencing much of the switches. A lot of political instability, poverty, unemployment etc. affected the lives and people in the nation then. The author being non biased about caste, religion, political leader and parties proves quite an prejudice free homo sapien. The span of India's history in the late 80s and 90s becomes author's volume. TDS's anecdotal incidents are worth reading.
