The Macaroon Chronicles

Rate this book
"The Macaroon Chronicles" is a romp through relationships amongst some anthropomorphic characters. It is one of those quirky books that awakes your sense of humour. Come and follow the fun.

Take a tour of the exotic Isle of Macaroon with Eddie and his zany friends who will be pleased to show you the cheese mines, Meringue Mountains and the Custard River while they flee unscrupulous promoters, bandit badgers and low-flying seagulls. But a word of advice – don’t refer to Eddie as a chicken, he thinks he’s a bald eagle. And don’t mention Brian’s small stature, he’s rather sensitive about his size. Oh, and don’t call Brian a monkey, he’s actually a lemur. And finally, if Gideon takes a pen out of his pocket and you value your life – duck.

Meet the chicken called Eddie who thinks he is a Bald Eagle and a whole bunch of weird and wacky friends who live on the island of Macaroon where nothing is as it seems. From a custard river to broccoli trees, a cheese mine, and fields of candyfloss bushes to name but a few.

The book opens with Eddie sorting out advertising for the new band he is managing ‘The Three Wise Monkeys’, although there are only two members and one of them is a lemur. They are to play their first gig at the annual music festival but when they eventually get there with their new member’s bunnies Babs and Deidre they end up being the headline act which propels them to stardom and a sneaky music promoter.

Join this bunch of strange animals as they have to escape the grips of their new manager, get sued for making clothes out of cheese, deal with a crafty car park attendant/mechanic, and become associated with a real-life spy, and this is just the start of their journey.

The Macaroon Chronicles is like a children’s book for adults. The characters are all animals, the setting is filled with food scenery, and the plot completely bizarre. How on earth author Dawn Knox came up with a book like this is baffling but she sure has one fun imagination.

I wasn’t quite sure going into this book how I was going to get on with it. I like books that are different and a little out there but I wasn’t sure whether this was too out there even for me. However, I was strangely hooked on the book and read it in one sitting. The chapters were quite short, which I like as I find short chapters add a dramatic feel to a book and there were eighteen of them.

Amid the weird and unusual is a story that if you changed the characters to humans would work too. It is a book where you can relate to what is happening. I liked it mainly because it was different.

If you are after a book that is a light-hearted, easy, quick read but nothing like you will ever have read before then I can suggest you read this one.

This is such a light, fun read for these challenging times. I loved meeting all the weird and wonderful characters and reading along as their antics developed.

I picked this up as I couldn't resist the cover, and it delivered on all the high links it promised!

Readers’ Comments
“This is such an odd book as it's sort of a children's book but written for adults. There’s plenty of comedy in the story which almost always hits the mark. The characters are amusing and the author seems to enjoy letting her imagination run wild in terms of the plot. A light, fun read.” Male reader, aged 54
“Short chapters, quirky plot and characters. Lots of twists, many of them silly but always highly amusing. It’s fun to find an author who’s prepared to write a very ‘different’ sort of story.” Female reader, aged 48
“A very pacey read; there’s always lots happening. Is there an underlying theme? Possibly. The animals characters displaying many human characteristics. Honestly, I don’t think it’s particularly thought-provoking – but that’s okay! It’s very funny!” Female reader, aged 39

To Sum It Up:
‘Plenty of pace and plenty of humour, the author exhibiting excellent comic timing.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards

I'd just finished The Basilwade Chronicles when I dived into The Macaroon Chronicles. The former was pretty absurd but this was completely off the wall. No character is human; there are only animals we are familiar with. The protagonists of this story are so disparate and in such dire straits that it is impossible to predict what is going to happen next or how the characters are going to get out of their fix.
How anyone could think up such a tale is mind-boggling and the machine gun spattering of jokes that just keep coming from every direction can only be admired. The dialogue between the characters is lively and extremely entertaining and tells the story by itself, almost - and, without giving any spoilers, the ending is very satisfying. To appreciate this book, I do think you require a quirkiness gene, a determined ability to suspend disbelief and an inner child with a great sense of humour for utter absurdities. If you have all those things then I recommend this book for you.

Something to make you smile

This is an anthropomorphic romp guaranteed to cheer you up in these times of gloom and doom. The food imagery is delightful and the mad cap, border line crime scenarios in which the gang find themselves are plotted with verve and humour. The situations are not original but they are clearly written. If you're a fan of farce or good old fashioned slap stick this is a great read. The book cover says it all. Newly discovered writer from a quirky, independent publisher of quality writing.

This book is a joyous romp through absurdity, where the characters are all animals, the scenery is mostly edible and the events propel the action at breakneck speed. And that alone makes it a feast of a read in these depressing days. But, seek deeper and you will find all the foibles of humanity illustrated by these engaging adventures, it's not Animal Farm, but a more gentle look at the everyday emotions of a group of friends battling their way through life.
Not to be missed.

Absolutely barking mad and absolutely brilliant at the same time! The characters are so well crafted that you forget they are birds and animals and you really invest in them! Lots of laugh out loud moments, especially Colin in tights and a ballet tutu! Lots of references to food, with seas made of custard!
A gentle romp in todays depressing world is just what you need. I loved it!

Not as laugh out loud funny as Basilwade but easily as charming and very creative! I had a lot of fun reading this installment of Chronicles (totally unrelated to Basilwade but #JustAsCharming)
