The Nyctus don’t like losing, and they’ll go to any lengths to turn the tides of war.
When the idyllic planet Nebo is scorched into oblivion, it’s obvious that the Nyctus are moving massive fleets into human space again, and their intention is clear: even if they lose their ships, they will render planets into ash.
To add to the damage, they seem to have key intelligence that could only have been obtained by a human crew.
Only one ship has ever gone missing, it’s disappearance unexplained and its crew never to be found: The Pool of Stars, one of the first starships.
And she’s been missing for centuries.
Now, after all these years, it’s up to Thorn to find it, for her disappearance might hold the key to victory.
Thorn and Kira are back again meaning to say the things that need to be said but which somehow they never do. When will Kira open up to Thorn? When does genocide become justifiable? Of course, many people would say ‘never’, but can we in all honesty accept that? The same people would say it is wrong to kill a man eating shark because the ocean is their home, not ours, and we are trespassing. Going by that logic we should be allowed to kill anyone who trespasses on our property! Well, of course not, that’s going a bit too far. But it somehow seems that all these rules apply to us to the exclusion of anyone else! We catch terrorists who have killed hundreds, if not thousands, of innocent people but we put them into jail for 10 or 20 years and then let them walk free! The way things are going we will be the end of our civilisation not any enemy. There was one point in the story when I asked myself if Thorn was going to become another Ender or an Anakin Skywalker. Well, for the answer to these questions, and others, we must wait.
This was competently written, but it was lacking a certain something from my perspective; hence the 4.
If you've read one of more of the preceding books you'll know the general idea (magical combat in space vs. genocidal threat to mankind). It does what it does well, it was just lacking that extra oomph in the story that would get it that extra star. Won't stop me from reading the next one though.
BTW, yes, nuking the entire race from orbit is the only way to be sure.
This book really teleported up several levels in awesomeness! The magical growth of Thorn was well orchestrated by the author. The intrigue of who is a spy or not keeps you guessing. Bring on book 4!!!
A blooming good read I thoroughly recommend you read. If you know thorn and his adventures then you will be gripped again I was and did not complain once. Read and enjoy
How do you like your squid cooked? How about nuclear barbecue.
Another spectacular addition to the series. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action and adventure. Magic and sleeping traitors. I look forward to the next one 😀
I'm really into this series. It's a really fun ride and the characters are great. Sure, there are moments I want to scream at them, but what book would be complete if that weren't the case?
Absolutely first rate. Wonderful emotional development in this book. Surprising and very satisfying. Kudos to the authors for weaving strong plot and great character development.
best in the series by far, and the series has been good so far. it’s definitely just a bit of YA fun but a good read. This definitely feels like the start of the big thing next to come but i’m a bit worried about the negative reviews of book 4, but will still happily continue this series.
This is a very good continuation of the story. I am impressed, entertained and enlightened. I loved how deep human questions were explored. Story and plot solid, and narration impeccable. To the next book.
