Thoroughly enjoyed taking this journey with this detective. The cases were major and engrossing, but, for once, I enjoyed taking the journey through his personal story too. Usually not a great lover of the personal life intruding on the crime storyline. However, this one complements the storyline as the main characters are both detectives so fall into the storyline without compromising it. No spoilers, 5 books well worth reading. MIT is the correct place for these major storylines.
I don't usually like to read a while series of books at once. I usually prefer to read individual books, but these were easy to read and I liked the characters.
Thought I'd made a mistake getting this box set. First book started with the story being told from the point of view of a man whose family have been abducted. I really like a book where there is a body and the detective has to crack on and find out what happened, not will this person survive their experience. Was almost tempted to skip it and move to another book, but persevered and when the detective came in to the story I started to become interested, by half way through I was enjoying it, and by the end I was really hooked. I liked the detective character, not one of your handsome flawless types, a bit more realistic. Having finished the first book I very quickly read the other four, unusual for me, I usually intersperse a box set with other books so that I don't get bored with the characters, but there was no chance of that. One word of warning though, a couple of these books are not for anyone who is sensitive to sexual cruelty and deviance.
A really enjoyable series although the format of the first two books are quite different to the final three in that the detective is slightly more peripheral to the victims in the first two books; the victims having vigilante/have-a-go hero like qualities.
The final three books focus much more on the police team headed by DCI Temple and is more police procedural in style. Both approaches are enjoyable and the books are well written with very interesting and different stories. My only complaint is the slightly cringe-inducing ending to book 5 which seemed to represent an unlikely triumph of hope over reality!
The stories in this set are all very interesting and varied and I enjoyed them very much. However I did find the lead character very disappointing and annoying. He's a terrible detective, jumping to conclusions, missing obvious clues and walking into traps with no back-up. It's a miracle he survived. I worked out who the bad guys were very early on in most of them too, especially the last one, which made Jeff Temple seem even more incompetent. I was tempted to knock a star off because of the lead character but I didn't because in the end I really enjoyed the stories, despite him.
This has been an enjoyable set of books. From the start I loved the way that in the first two books we were involved in the victim's story as well as following Jeff Temple. That really worked for me and was done again in the fifth book. Five great stories which could all have happened with the last really bringing us into the bloggers age. We have the pleasure of following Jeff in his private life and the way romance blossoms with a co-worker. Well researched and written making for a good way to pass the time reading.
Great series! All topics are scary because they could and have happened! Books 2 and 4 are among the most frightening murder mysteries that I have ever read! Their plot development is exquisite since so much is left to the reader's imagination! DCI Jeff Temple is excellent but does act stupidly at the end of books 2, 3,and 4. His wonderful team, however, rescue him from his foolish actions! Wonderful reading experience!
A fast moving tale of a dedicated blogger with a mission to expose corruption - and whose tenacity attracted the attention of those who wished to remain in the shadows.
His death and the note he left indicated suicide, but his fiancée knew better, and her tenacity in attempting to expose the truth puts her in grave danger.
The last book in the box set is the Blogger, not bad overall but my suspensions on who the killer was did not take long to suss out. The whole story sort of rings true in these days of online presence though I cannot see my blog having any influence on anyone like the guy who was murdered as hardly any one looks at it. I doubt these books I have read would make me want to get any more of James Ravens work
Read reviews and have always enjoyed the ones from Joffe, and that one can get them in a set. To get to know the characters. This series was a big disappointment, read 1/2 of book one and 1/2 of book two and stopped. They are too graphic, and too detailed of the plot subjects.. Good thing it was only a dollar, but the time .
Every story holds your attention with so many if’s and buts. Brilliant writing and anyone who enjoys a good detective series should definitely read this. Worth every star.
Couldn’t put this series down and each story had its own unique investigation team. Gripping meaty stories and keen to read more.
A very good series of British police Detective novels.
Five novels featuring DCI Jeff Temple and associates. Jeff having been widowed, teams up with his subordinate who later becomes his lover and fiancé. Will their love survive the bloody murders, long hours and stresses of their Police careers?
For me the worst part was incoherent superficial characters who seemed unnecessarily indecisive when the evidence was right in front of their nose. The slide into sadomasochistic plot in two of the stories was repugnant to me. Clearly I’m not a great audience for this writer.
The first four stories I had no idea who done it! Only the fifth one did I know the bad guy, but I had no idea how he accomplished it. Very good reads, I went from one story to the next without stopping. If you like good cops and bad guys, you will like these stories.
These five books featuring Jeff Temple are well-written and exciting, with well-drawn and engaging characters I really care about. I look forward to reading more by James Raven.
An interesting series with Jeff Temple as the main character. All the books were diverse and with plausible storylines. Future visits to the New Forest may never feel the same.
Enjoyed reading about Jeff and his team really easy reading throughout and good background stories on the main characters. Would recommend for anyone trying to get back into reading after a break
I enjoyed this series of books very much, found it hard to put them down. Each plot was a riveting read, although I thought the main character Jeff Temple got more than his far share of injuries. I think these books would make a great T.V series
An enjoyable read. Each of these stories are completely different from the others, some have extremely complex plots that are well thought out and written. Will recommend.
Detective Jeff Temple and His Team in 5 very Good and Different Stories. Good Characters and James Raven knows how to tell a Story.. I will look for more from this author as He has a Fantastic imagination
I thoroughly enjoyed all of these books, and look forward to reading more by Mister Raven. Somehow, most of the British crime novels are mire to my liking than American ones. And NO typos!!
Five very interesting who done it novels. Although the crimes are very different the steady work of DCI Jeff Temple and his team get the results required even though personnel tragedy is always close by.
The characters were believable but the twists in the plots were sometimes a bit predictable. However the series were fun reading and I enjoyed them all
A reasonably good read, slightly spoiled by some bad grammar and typos. But definitely worth spending.some time on. Some good descriptions of the New Forest
