This is a generous 3 star and it's only just a 3 star. I felt bad because I love this series and until the reveal of the murderer it was a 2 star book.
The one saving grace of the book was that I didn't know who was the murderer. I thought it was going to be one person but it wasn't really set up, but then when they revealed the killer I was like "Wow, that makes more sense."
The writing was good as usual.
Also, Dash has a bit of a storyline in this book and I like when Dash is in the story.
So the B story in the book was Lacey is trying to hire a temporary assistant since Ryder is in the Amazon studying plants there. I know it's supposed to be funny, but really these cast of characters that they say come though is a little out there. If they stuck with someone who showed up late the first day and asked to leave early, and the guy who had to return to his home planet would have been sufficient.
It was an interesting storyline and I know was supposed to be funny, but mostly it was just sad to watch.
So why did I think it was a 2 star book until the end: 1. From the weather, landscape, and just attitude I always felt Port Danby was an East Coast town in Massachusetts. It just felt that way to me, but this book suggests that it's a West Coast town with the West Coast Bird Watching Society convention in town. I know that you can have a transcontinental convention, but it didn't play that way.
2. When Lacey first "inspects" the crime scene she doesn't really rely on her nose and she starts looking for evidence. She's going beyond what she can and should do. She's basically contaminating the crime scene because any evidence found would have a broker chain of custody.
For the last few books Lacey's been getting a little brazen is what she can actually do and any good lawyer can get their client off if they argue the police are using a civilian to garner confessions and evidence because she circumvent the legal system by not reading rights or getting warents.
I know it's a book and not real life, but sometimes it's just a little much.
3. And really the biggest, the first half of the book it felt like I was reading one of her other series. From her interaction with Briggs, to her investigation style, it just felt a little off. It could have been the whole West Coast thing, but it was all just a little off. It wasn't until Dash comes in that if felt like a Port Danby story to me. About 1/2 way through it started feeling like a Port Danby story. There really wasn't much Lola or Elsie. And even when they were in the first part it was like an after thought.
I know another book is coming bout soon and I'm still going to read it, but this book was just frustrating.
