When tragedy flips Elle Jamison's life upside down, she retreats from the busy Seattle skyline to a quiet beachside town in California called Arroyo Grande. She leaves behind the life she’s always known to a life lived in isolation. A self-proclaimed bibliophile, Elle discovers a used bookstore in The Village and within it, a handsome and recently widowed bookstore owner named Aidan Wilson. Wanting to forget her past, Elle adamantly denies herself another chance at love with Aidan or anyone else.

Aidan desperately misses his wife but doesn't want to stop living because she's gone. He submerges himself in his businesses and attempts to move forward without the love of his life. When Aidan meets Elle, she brings mystery and charm, but mostly, a shattered heart. She refuses to tell Aidan about her life in Seattle, making him hesitant to trust her. But with Aidan's own secrets, is it Elle that should be cautious about going forward with him?

4.5 STARS!!
"If I've learned anything, it's that tomorrow isn't promised. When you love someone, you tell them."
So. Good. 😍😍

You know those books that catch you by surprise with their quiet maturity and poignancy ==> that was this book!!

Plot in a nutshell: Elle is new in town, determined to start over. She has no plans to get involved with anyone until she meets bookstore owner, Aidan, who's not put off at all by her standoffishness. She's the first woman who's sparked his interest since his wife died three years ago . . .

Dun, dun, DUN! I know some of you hate the dead ex trope, but here Elle never came across as second best and neither was it used as a cheap attempt to tug at my heartstrings.
Elle loved the way Aidan talked about his wife, and she wanted to see that sparkle in his eye again.
I really liked these very human characters who managed to squeeze a few tears from my jaded heart. Aidan especially captured my heart.
"You know that's kinda a turn on, right?"
"What is?" She looked at Aidan.
"Getting shellacked by a woman at something you thought you were good at."
I also liked Elle, whose past remained a mystery for much of the book.
A piece of her wanted the freedom to tell it, scream it to anyone who'd listen, so she didn't have to keep it locked close to her heart anymore.
They were both flawed in such a genuine, heartbreaking way; they certainly didn't always make good choices.
She wanted to run to him and away from him at the same time.
And to top it all off, the subplot also had some fabulous moments. The author managed to string me along to the very end by cleverly doling out tiny morsels of information, piece by piece. Such good stuff. 😂

I recommend!!

Delicately by M. Jane Early is a contemporary romance told in third person, dual POV.

Used book store owner, Aiden Wilson, is a widower who tragically lost his college sweetheart after only a few short years of marriage. Elle Jamison is a book lover who's new in town. When she wanders into Aiden's store, he's instantly attracted and drawn to her, but Elle's not looking for romance. She already had her chance at love. It's part of the past she ran away from when she moved to this small town.

Aiden knows that Elle is hiding something, but he has secrets too. What will happen as they spend time together? Will they open their hearts to each other? Or will their secrets keep them apart? Read the book to find out.

I enjoyed Elle and Aiden's story. It took a little time for me to connect with both characters as the story started out slowly. But as it progressed, it moved forward steadily. I soon found myself invested in both Aiden and Elle as individuals, and rooting for them to become a couple. The characters were likeable and realistically flawed. Both had endured gut-wrenching grief in the past and responded to their pain in different ways. Delicately is a story of love, loss, heartbreak, healing, and hope. It's about new beginnings, taking chances, and second chances. Overall, a highly enjoyable read.

*** I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC. ***

Note from Author:

I wrote Delicately while Before We Get Carried Away was being edited and really didn't know if I was going to publish it. At first it was just going to be on Kindle, but when my graphic design artist came up with this amazing cover, I just knew I had to make it a full novel.

There's a lot of different emotions with these two characters. While I love Aidan and his positivity (and flaws), Elle is a character I wanted to pull into a hug to let her know everything was going to be okay. We writers have a tendency to torture our characters to make the story as interesting as possible. I didn't want to do that with Elle, she had been through enough before the story had even started.

This books is about second chances when you don't feel like you deserve them. Love and loss, heartbreak and recovery.

Hope you enjoy!

First read by this author. I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway and it was an enjoyable small town romance read. It is a slow burn romance with enticing characters, one trying to run from her past and the other trying to move on, both battling heartbreak of lost loves while trying to learn to cope with their pasts and finding new love and making a feature in the present. Loved all the characters and the author’s writing, and am looking forward to reading more by her.

I loved this book. As a sucker for both book stores and small town vibes, this book had everything I love. There’s heartbreak, drama, a little action (of multiple varieties), and compelling characters. Another solid read from MJE.

Love Story!! I enjoyed this, however, it was rather predictable. Still had fun with it. Thank you Goodreads Giveaways.

I enjoyed that Aiden didn't shy away from talking about Kendra his dead wife and seemed to realise that it's hard to move on but what she would have wanted. Love that books get talked about a lot during their time together, yay for owning a book store (jealous)

The main characters keep jumping to conclusions and had selective communication/ignoring each other left me annoyed and feeling like they acted like teenagers at times.

I liked the characters in this book, how the author had them living normal everyday lives with issues that anyone of us might encounter. I also enjoyed the side plot & light suspense added by a deranged character or two. But...

I don't have the patience to deal with characters that flip-flop with their feelings or decisions & this is how I feel about Elle. She has a secret from her past that she'd like to share with Aiden once their relationship gets going but then halts & says, no, we can't do this. She pulls back multiple times & I just wanted to scream.

Aiden has his own faults, absolutely, but I warmed to him more than Elle, at first anyway. Elle is witty, quietly friendly but carries needless responsibility from her past. And to think someone would cast blame on her & abandon a relationship because of this was inconceivable. If anything, one would feel sympathy or empathy & not blame her. When her secret was revealed I thought, what? That's it? Is it just me or maybe I'm reading this one at the wrong time.

In the end, I liked the story but felt disappointed at the big reveal.

Another great one from M.Jane Early. I loved the cozy bookstore setting and the atmospheric beach/bonfire moments: both totally make for a small town vibe that anyone would love to escape to. This author is a master at dialogue, and her great characters jump of the page with their realistic quirks, histories, and conversations. You'll fall in love with Aidan, who is not your typical alpha male romance novel trope but instead is sweet and sensitive and in touch with his feelings.

This is a contemporary and second chance romance. This is a good light read for those who want to fall in love with a bookstore owner and a newcomer into town. The character development is great in this book. The drama is there but light which is great. Definitely a good read for someone who wants to give the romance genre a try!!!
