Antother is this wonderful series that I would consider a favourite. Yes, undoubtedly Sánchez Vegara does brush other some of the hardest parts of his life. But she does mention two important things, perseverance for success and AIDS. AIDS is one of the things Elton John is best known for, the charity he set up to help combat it (it is part of the reason for his knighthood). The is a message here that is shown very obviously in the illustrations, to get to the brightest of days you have to go through darkness. Also, life is what you make it. As always the information pages at the back provide more detail including full names of the major people.
The reason this is another that I would consider a favourite is the illustrations. They are just so brilliantly bright and energetic and well gay (in both senses of the word). I can't tell what medium was used to create the illustrations but it really does work, somehow an out and out computer-style would feel wrong here. Sophie Beer's illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to the story. There are two pages where the tone changes, one where we see Elton John with Ryan White a person pivotal to his worldview and the man we know now. That page is much calmer and probably more like an adult version of Reggie, it's almost still and the only page with white space. The other is all blues representing depression or at least isolation. Both are very clever uses of colour to draw attention and create a moment. The end pages here were a perfect choice, the iconic glasses. This book is a great one for the musically inclined children, the performers, those who like to be louder than life. They will likely get a kick out of the imagery.
