“This is the story of a little boy from the London suburbs, who once sat at the piano and started playing a waltz by ear. His name was Reggie, and from that day on, whenever his parents argued, music became his refuge.”

Cute, snub-nosed Reggie, tuning out his parents and enjoying his music instead

Reggie wouldn’t be the first, nor the last, little fellow to hide in another world from family troubles. His love was music. He won a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music and discovered music brought people together. He began singing with a band and entered a competition, but his music and lyrics didn’t do very well.

BUT, this is where he met Bernie Taupin, who couldn’t write music but gave Elton a stack of lyrics to write melodies for, and the rest, as they say, is history. Boy is it ever! The two of them have been putting out hits for a lifetime or two.

“Reggie wasn’t the best at writing lyrics, and Bernie didn’t know how to write melodies. But by working together, all they needed was 15 minutes to make the most beautiful songs.”

Fifteen minutes! Now Reggie was ready to make a solo album but needed a catchier name, so he borrowed names from a couple of his bandmates: Elton John. As his fame grew, his outfits and his glasses became flashier.

“He had thousands of spectacular glasses and the most amazing wardrobe a drag queen would long for.”

Loved by millions, he was lonely when he went home after the show.

Elton, depressed and alone in the dark

He happened to meet a young boy in America named Ryan, who was in hospital. There are some details about this in the text biography at the end of the book. Ryan was dying of AIDS from blood transfusions. After he died, Elton decided to live a better life to honour his memory.

“Elton and Ryan, chatting outside the hospital”

He changed his ways, met and married David, was knighted by the Queen, and created a wonderful AIDS foundation. He and David have two kids, but he still remembers shy little Reggie.

This is a particularly good addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series. Perhaps it’s because Elton John is so colourful that his life lends itself well to the bright artwork that will appeal to children. I also think it's because this is one where the drawings look like the person. Illustrator Sophie Beer seems to have captured him better than some artists have managed with other subjects.

I've always enjoyed Elton John's music but knew nothing about the Ryan White story. You can see more about that on this website, along with a list of his albums in order of popularity.

Elton John is another fantastic installment in the Little People Big Dreams series by the amazing Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. This book is a young childs condensed and child friendly auto biography about Elton John and his life and how he has made an impact on the music industry. These books are amazingly inspirational for children and encourage them to not only pursue their dreams but to also never give up on them.
The illustrations are fantastic and so lifelike to Elton John all the way through!

Ahhh, Elton John. He is a living legend who has made music SO much cooler. Whether you've listened to his music before or have seen Rocketman, he's a super cool dude.

So, OF COURSE, I had to pick up this book. On top of it being from one of my fave children's picture books series that feature the best non-fiction content I've seen in a long time!

Elton John: Musician, Fashion Icon, real name is Reggie, best friend named Bernie, cool glasses, and overall cool guy. He's illustrated to be the sweetest, little nerd and he's just so cute. He's playing piano, auditioning, and learning his craft. This guy's story is told perfectly with the colourful artwork and beautiful illustrations. Honestly, these illustrations are WAY better than the previous instalments in this series. SO MUCH BETTER. SO COLOURFUL. I LIKE IT. ALL CAPS. STRESS THESE SENTENCES PLEASE.

Overall, this book is a must read from me!

Five out of five stars.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

Great first book about this iconic star! Really was into EJ when I was younger; now I appreciate him even more. He has done so much charity work behind the scenes, I really admire him for that. Hope to see him come out with more music - would love for him to help write a GN on the origin of the Pinball Wizard in Tommy!

Elton John by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is the latest addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS series that has continued to enchant me. The series speaks to young children who have very big aspirations and, this time around, it is the Rocket Man himself whose profile inspires the success and happiness that comes from following your dreams.

As a child growing up in London, young Elton (then Reginald) began to play his grandmother's piano, and very quickly realized that he could reproduce complex compositions by ear. When he much later met Bernie Taupin, who had a remarkable talent for writing lyrics, the two joined forces to give the world some of the most memorable music of the last five decades. Throughout his phenomenal journey of success, Elton often felt sad and lonely, but he eventually found his true love, and created the family that he had always wanted. The story is brought to life by colourful and quirky illustrations that encapsulate and celebrate the iconic performer. This will be a treasured addition to any child's library.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Children's Books for this ARC.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
I enjoy listening to Elton John's music and this little book is perfect for the singer's fans who want to introduce him to little ones. But I think it's also quite enjoyable for people who aren't really into his music. I loved the vibrant colours that were used in the drawings, because they're just so Elton! I'm sure everyone could love this little book!

Another adorable and informative entry into the Little People Big Dreams picture book series! In this book kids learn about a shy boy from England named Reggie. Reggie used music as an escape and was talented on the piano from an early age. When he was a young man, in the late 60's Reggie teamed up with a lyricist and the two created hit songs. Reggie created the stage name Elton John and bedecked himself in colorful glasses and creative outfits. He went on to become one of the top selling solo performers ever and was even knighted by the Queen of England.

This is another inspiring story for little kids who may feel a bit different and let's them know what success can be had if they follow their dreams. The illustrations are charming and colorful with lots of little details for kids to explore. There is a timeline at the end of the book that shows important moments in Elton John's career along with real life photos of him.

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

The Little People, BIG DREAMS series is one of my favorite children's series. They're great biographies for children to learn about important people from all over the world. Musicians, scientists, athletes, artists, writers - each one had a dream as a child and turned their dreams into reality. Readers are introduced to a legend as a child. Think big, dream big.

I love Elton John! I grew up with his music, enjoying many hours of his musical abilities. I was excited to see Elton added to the series. Enjoyed the journey from dreamer to Grammy-winning artist and musical icon. Love this series!

I love this book series. I also am a big fan of Elton John. The book is an interesting story for young readers to learn about Elton. He has had such a long career and accomplished so much. He lived a different life, too. This is great for children to learn about different types of people.

Still, the pictures are the star! They are just magical and jump off the page. They bring the book to life. I loved seeing each page.

So, I am trying to find more books to read to young children. I would certainly recommend this one.

Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of this week. A pleasure to review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This little book tells the story of Elton John, the most famous piano wizard who rocketed to stardom with his music. I like a lot Elton's music and it was really nice reading this book. I loved how he was portrayed in here and I'm so happy children have the chance to read about this exceptional figure.

I love the Little People Big Dreams series and Elton John is another fantastic installment. This book is a child friendly, short biography that touches on Elton John's childhood, when he was known as Reginald, and some of the high points of his life. He was a bit of a nerdy kid who didn't fit in and used music to hide his shyness. When he met Bernie Taupin, a remarkable writer of lyrics, the two joined forces to give the world some of the most memorable music of the last five decades. I still sing those songs that I grew up with. Throughout his life, even with the success he achieved, Elton often felt lonely. When he eventually finds his true love, he is able to create the family that he had always wanted. The illustrations in this book are some of the best in this series. Elton is depicted as the showman that is is. These books are so inspirational for children and encourage them to not only pursue their dreams but to also never give up on them. This series is one of the best children's biographies I have seen and I definitely recommend them. I was gifted a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

Review to be added to Amazon UK and US on 13th October 2020 - publication day!

I love the books in this series and always find something new in them and this is the 50th book in the series so far - I hope that it continues and the author continues to release them just as fast!

This was a book that focused on a famous pop star - Elton John we get to read a little about his early life and his adventures once he had become famous too which includes his charity work and the setting up of his own AIDS foundation.

Lovely images and another great addition to the series - 5 stars from me for this one

Author: Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara
Illustrator: Sophie Beer
Age Recommendation: Early Primary
Topic/ Theme: Music, charity, LGBTQ, biographic.
Setting: Britain
Series: Little People, Big Dreams

Antother is this wonderful series that I would consider a favourite. Yes, undoubtedly Sánchez Vegara does brush other some of the hardest parts of his life. But she does mention two important things, perseverance for success and AIDS. AIDS is one of the things Elton John is best known for, the charity he set up to help combat it (it is part of the reason for his knighthood). The is a message here that is shown very obviously in the illustrations, to get to the brightest of days you have to go through darkness. Also, life is what you make it. As always the information pages at the back provide more detail including full names of the major people.

The reason this is another that I would consider a favourite is the illustrations. They are just so brilliantly bright and energetic and well gay (in both senses of the word). I can't tell what medium was used to create the illustrations but it really does work, somehow an out and out computer-style would feel wrong here. Sophie Beer's illustrations are a perfect accompaniment to the story. There are two pages where the tone changes, one where we see Elton John with Ryan White a person pivotal to his worldview and the man we know now. That page is much calmer and probably more like an adult version of Reggie, it's almost still and the only page with white space. The other is all blues representing depression or at least isolation. Both are very clever uses of colour to draw attention and create a moment. The end pages here were a perfect choice, the iconic glasses. This book is a great one for the musically inclined children, the performers, those who like to be louder than life. They will likely get a kick out of the imagery.

It was called "Your Song" and it launched Elton like a rocket man, from his mother's modest house to superstardom!

Ah! The newest addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series by Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara made me so excited! I've always loved Elton John and his music. He's such an exceptional, amazing, and talented man. I honestly consider myself extremely lucky to have been alive during a time in which Elton John existed. With lovely illustrations from Sophie Beer, the 50th book of the series is one that belongs on everyone's shelves.

Learning Something New

One of the things I love about Sánchez Vegara's books is that I always seem to learn something from them. I may really like, respect, and appreciate a great many of these people but I admittedly do have gaps in my knowledge about their lives and careers. And it was so much fun to learn small tidbits about Elton John's life and rise to fame. I had no idea before reading this that Your Song--one of my favorites--is his first big hit!

These stories are also so inspiring. Any child reading them is sure to find motivation from the life experiences of these people. Elton John, born Reginald, is definitely someone worthwhile for kids to admire. I loved learning about the struggles he faced and how he overcame them and I think a great many children will, too.

The Look

Every Little People, Big Dreams book has a similar illustration style, but with the fact that each is illustrated by a different person, you're bound to see a variety of styles. I'm a pretty big fan of what Beer has done with our favorite artist. Her artwork very cleverly captures Elton John's style and is gorgeous throughout. The illustrations are all bright and colorful, ready to entrance and engage children of any age.

Honestly, Sánchez Vegara could not have chosen a better artist to focus her 50th book on nor a better artist to portray him.

And You Can Tell Everybody

Of all the books in this series, I can honestly say that this is the one I'm most excited about. I had such a fun time reading it and I really hope that a large number of adults and children feel the same way. And hey, Christmas is just around the corner (only two-ish months!), so it's definitely worth considering.

One last thing, I should note that this book does discuss AIDS and, in particular, references someone important to Elton John who did die of it.

This book was so cute! I love Elton. I would love to see him in concert. My parents got the chance 35 years ago. I loved all the color and the uplifting story. He has had a fascinating life with lots of ups and downs but he has stayed positive and is such a great role model.

'Elton John' by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Sophie Beer is the 50th volume in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.

As a child, Elton John was a prodigy on the piano. This got him a scholarship study classical music, and while Elton was there, he liked writing rock and roll music. He learned he wasn't as good at the lyrics, but found a partner who was.

I liked this bright, colorful biography of Elton John. This is such a fun series, and the artist really did a great job with the illustrations. There are lots of fun details in the art.

Reflections and lessons learned:
“But once the show was over and the adoring crowds had left, Elton felt terribly alone. He had all he could dream of, and still, nothing seemed to make him happy”

My son, as I’m sure many children did, fell in love with Johnny the gorilla in the wonderful film Sing, and can often be found singing ‘I’m still standing’ at the top his lungs whilst wiggling his hips. Coincidentally whilst having covid, I rewatched Rocketman the night before his birthday whilst wrapping gifts, and really enjoyed it with the strange connection across the platforms and generations. Would I go and see John in concert? Possibly not one that I’d rush for a ticket too, but the career can’t be denied.

These books are always fabulous, but this one is a surprise in the span of Johns life dealt with in only a few pages, whilst still being suitable for the younger audience. Parental conflict, finding himself, dealing with depression, social activism - not just about the music… and now my son wants the sparkly gold jacket from the cover too!

This was an adorable book to teach children about Elton John. I am not sure they will know any of his hits, but they can learn about how he rose to fame and his charity work. The book doesn't dwell so much on his problems, but does indeed promote his successes.

ELTON JOHN is another great addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS series. I really enjoy these stories that often showcase that the humblest of beginnings are no barrier to achieving big dreams.

These books are aimed at young children but I tend to discover facts about these people that I never knew myself.

I like the facts and photos section, as well as suggestions for further reading.

The illustrations are their typical good quality but the illustrations in this book really complement Elton’s flamboyant public persona.

The Little People, Big Dreams series introduces young children to those from many fields and backgrounds. All take their subject from childhood and go on to show what they did in their adult lives. This time the story of Elton John is shared.

The book is engaging right from the start with its appealing cover and the illustrations continue to be just delightful throughout. Readers learn that Reggie, later known as Elton, found music to be central to his life. He played his first waltz (by ear) as a young child. From there, Elton went on to study classical music and, of course, later made his own music.

This title notes the contrast between Elton’s musical success and his inner sadness. His meeting with Ryan (adults may recall that he had Aids) and Elton’s promise to move forward in his life are acknowledged as is Elton’s husband David. All in all, Elton’s story is well told.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own. I give this one five stars.

What a fabulous vibrant telling of the life of Elton John! His personality shines through the pages, I could almost hear the music. This book teaches us that our dreams can come true. If I were to fault anything it would be disagreeing with the statement that his name wasn’t cool enough to be a star. In my opinion; it should be made clear that HE thought it wasn’t cool enough. Just a thought and a small distinction but with books geared towards younger readers it’s nice to be positive.

One of the most colorful and exciting in this series, and that’s saying something.

Since I watched the movie "Rocket Man", I knew all the details that are in this book already. But it's really good to show this side of Elton John to kids, his wilder life before he became the distinguished and respected (older) Sir who still likes to wear colorful glasses.
And after reading the book, the kids should definitely listen to his "Greatest Hits" album. My kids especially like "I'm still standing".

I absolutely loved the Elton John, Little People, Big Dreams book by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara and it won't be the first of this collection that I will be definitely adding to my book collection.

Its simply written, inclusive and is beautifully illustrated. I loved how the song titles were subtly woven through the text.
Detailing Elton's (or Reggie Dwight's) rise to fame and his dream of becoming a musician. There are a few words in there (that require a possible explanation to the class, (drag queen) that mean I'd pitch this at an older audience - year five onwards.

But nevertheless, it's gorgeous.

I love this biography series for children and Elton John has been a favorite musical artist of mine since I was a child (not to mention growing up watching Ryan White's story unfold on the television and watching his funeral), so I was excited to see this book was available. The illustrations are okay but don't do Elton justice and there is one line that truly makes me angry. Vegara writes: "He had thousands of spectacular glasses and the most amazing wardrobe a drag queen would long for." Elton John is not and has never been a drag queen, nor do all drag queens dress as outlandishly as Elton did on stage during his early years. Children will not understand why this sentence can rub adults wrong, so I can't knock the book for that, but it soured the book's enjoyment for me.

Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to read an advance reading copy.

Gratulations for 50 colourful books in this outstanding picture book series!

This one is all about the Rocketman, Elton John. I am sure I heard his real name before, but I seem to have forgotten this. For me, he was always there in the world, out and about and proud and wearing weird beautiful things, but most from this book I didn't know - only that he's happily married and has adopted children.

I did not know how much he did for the fight against AIDS, and this book would serve as a great entryway to talk about that topic to a little one.

Bonus points for the Freddy Mercury easter egg.
