An unusual foray into the sci-fi genre, this book is a much needed return to form by a highly cerebral literary author, only this time also a comedy. Dung manages to tune down his part-essay, part-narrative style to a more straightforward storytelling but it is ,regrettably, a likely case of falling between two stools , too trope-heavy for Dung's loyal readers but not technical/scientific for sci-fi readers (Kantian philosophy really doesn't count, Mr Dung). And no matter how he spins it in his column, that ending does not flow from his premise .
I have never read a Chinese/Cantonese fiction that is this fascinating. The wowing use of metaphors, elements from recent social movements in Hong Kong, cultural and historical differences between Hong Kong and Singapore, politics, as well as philosophical and scientific theories created a thought-provoking fiction which seems to predict our future. The writer is really eccentric and humorous. Highly recommend this book to all Hong Kongers.
