Down & Dirty is the sixth and final book in the Men of Haven series by Rhenna Morgan. I have been an obsessed fan of this series since the first book. This band of brothers by choice has captivated and held my heart. They are all strong, alpha men who love with their whole hearts and will do whatever is necessary to keep the people they love safe, whether it is inside the confines of the law, or not. Honor is the only rule they adhere to.

We’ve known Axel McKee, the Scottish bad boy, throughout this entire series. Now it’s finally his turn for a woman to stop him in his tracks and that is exactly what happened. It was a random stop to check out a band when he saw her on stage. She captivated him. He knew right then and there that she was his.

Ben Dahlhaus - Tate

Elizabeth (Lizzy) Hemming got a rough start with launching her career. Now she and her band, Falcon Black, are doing their best to land gigs in local dive bars. On a night when a bar owner was trying to pull one over on her, there he was, larger than life, trying to swoop in and help the damsel in distress. Well, no thank you. She could take care of herself. Still, she couldn’t get him off her mind.

Axel finds a way to bring Lizzy into his world. He knows he’s going to have to be patient with her. She’s got a history that makes her keep her armor in place. But he’ll wait until she’s ready to let it down. Because she’s his, she just doesn’t know it yet.

“You’re kind of bossy.”
“More so than you know. But it won’t ever be for anything other than your safety. Or to give you pleasure.”

Axel gave up any chance at a professional career as a musician when he was very young in order to pursue a more lucrative career with his best friend Jace, so they could provide for their mothers. When he hears Lizzy play, he knows he’ll do anything to help her to achieve every dream she’s ever fantasized about. But he wants more than to just help her professionally. He wants everything.

“With you next to me, there’s not much I can’t handle.”

“Well, then, you’re set to conquer the world, lass, because I’m not going anywhere.”

Lizzy’s past comes back and attempts to reawaken everything she has worked so hard to forget. Axel will do anything to keep Lizzy safe and happy. The woman he loves was hurt. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened. Because whatever affects her, affects him. And it’s his job to battle her ghosts. And battle them he will. He will get revenge for Lizzy. The person that hurt her will pay.

“I waited a long time for you, Elizabeth. Years I wish we could have spent together. But I’d have waited twice as long if I knew you were my reward.”

This was such a good book. I was already in love with Axel from the previous books. I knew I was going to love his story. Lizzy was perfect for him. She was his perfect match. You can easily read this as a stand alone. But, the characters are all recurring. You would love the characters the most if you start at the beginning and get to know each of the Men of Haven individually. But you can definitely start with Axel if that’s what you prefer.

man holding woman

I happen to know that this amazing author is hard at work with a spin off series. I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for this. I’m not sure if we’ll get to revisit any of these brothers in the future series but I have all my fingers and toes crossed that we will. So keep those typing fingers moving, Rhenna. I don’t think I’m the only one who can’t wait for more.

“His Elizabeth.
His heart.
His everything.”

What a way to end the series! I loved it! This is exactly what I like to see in a hero who was a playboy until he meets his heroine. Once Axel laid eyes on Lizzy, he never looked at another woman. His devotion to her and the way he went at her speed was just AMAZING! I wouldn't change a thing!

Reading about Axel in the previous books of the series, he seemed like the last guy to every settle down. I think that's what makes how he handled Lizzy so wonderful. He was protective, possessive, caring and sweet, but you sure don't mess with her cause he will turn into your worst nightmare.

Lizzy is guarded. She's not had the best upbringing and the first guy she gives her trust to left scars. I worried she would be too standoffish due to her past. I worried for nothing. The author did such a good job of balancing her need to go slow and her character growth due to Axel's care. It was the right timing to be realistic.

All the great side characters from previous books are back. I love when a story has a group of close friends/family that are there for the main characters. It always adds more to the story for me as a reader. Plus I love to see past main characters and their happiness continuing.

I've really loved this series and I am so sad to see it ending. I want more! I truly can't wait to see what this author will bring us next.

I absolutely love the men of Haven! Each of these books just pulls me further and further into their wonderful world of support and unconditional love through family and friends. This one by far showcased that quality more than the others, in my opinion.

If ever a heroine needed what the family of Haven have to offer, it was Lizzy.

description

Having been taken advantage of in the past as well as never knowing the true sense of having family to rely on, I found myself choking up each time the realization of what Axel’s family was offering her became apparent. Step by step she begins to learn and trust that he and those around him are there for her through it all. And holy heck, he is the main force behind her ability to finally let loose of the past and hope for a future.

Axel was so amazing in his complete devotion to Elizabeth. From the first moment he laid eyes on her he was taken. I loved his protectiveness over her even when it took a back seat to what he wanted to do.

description

His life now revolved around making sure she had what she needed on a deep emotional level. His actions were exactly what she needed and each time I fell deeper in love with him.

This is a fast paced read with a steam factor that absolutely sizzled. I’m not a huge fan of BDSM but oh my gosh, the scenes between these two were freaking amazing.

description

What they shared was not about power play but about giving Lizzy a safe place to let go. Of course, the secondary characters here offer the perfect support for this couple and especially the heroine and I couldn’t love a group of characters more than I do the men and women of Haven.

I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of this series to anyone who loves strong protective heroes as well as heroines who are just as strong to earn their love.

I received this book for free from the publisher (Harlequin) as part of their bookstagram publicity campaign.

I just want to preface this review by saying that I haven’t read any of the other books in the series so I can’t compare it to the others or say if this was a satisfying conclusion to the series. Even though I didn’t read the other books, I was still able to read and enjoy this as a standalone.

I was initially interested in this book because the main character, Axel, reminded me of Axl Rose, one of my favorite rockers. They’re The guy on the cover even sort of looks like him too.

description

As a whole, this was a solid contemporary romance with some BDSM mixed in. It wasn’t super heavy on the BDSM (and was fairly tame), so don’t go in expecting something super crazy. The story was a very classic alpha male plot, which I tend to really like. I loved Axel and how loyal and protective he was.

Aside from the romance, there is a secondary storyline about Lizzy’s ex. To me, that part felt a little…meh. It kind of added something to the story but at the same time it kind of didn’t. That’s my only critique of the book.

Overall, this was a fun read, perfect for anybody looking to read a steamy alpha male romance.

3,5 stars but not 4

This is Book 6 in "Haven Brotherhood"(aka Men of Haven) series. It is Axel's book.

I hesitated to read this book because from the previous books, I knew that Axel was into some kinky sh*t and I hate BDSM but this is the last book of the series so I wanted to say a proper goodbye to my lovely characters so I read it.

*********************************************

The hero, Axel, is a pure alpha male. He is one sexy Scott with a tempting accent.

Axel loved playing guitar and singing when he was a teenager but later to save and protect his mother, he gave up his dreams and chose another path in his life. In this book, he is making the dreams of our heroine real and making her famous and successful in the music industry and this gives him a satisfaction close to the one he would feel if he made his own dreams real.

*********************************************

The action part of the book is about the heroine’s ex, who emotionally and physically abused her. He also stole her songs’ copyrights. So, there is a revenge to be taken 😊

*********************************************

Elizabeth is a rock singer. Axel sees Elizabeth while singing in a bar and and he feels something big, something different about her but it is not easy for a man-wh*re guy like him to accept that he has feelings for a specific woman; he has to come to terms with it.

He thinks a lot about her for a long time. It takes him 8 months to finally make a move. But for those 8 months, he stays celibate because all his desires are now for only one woman. I liked him for being celibate for so long.

*********************************************

When Axel first talks to Elizabeth, it is to help her to settle something with a bar owner so she is more pissed at his interference than being thankful.

Later, Axel asks Jace to offer a job to Elizabeth and her band in their club. That night, after the show, he tells her that he wants to manage and promote her. Elizabeth has a lot of trust issues because of her ex so Axel has to try hard to earn her trust.

Axel takes everything slowly but he makes it clear that he wants her professionally and personally.

*********************************************

And after a certain time, especially after getting to know his wonderful family, Elizabeth starts to trust him. From then on, their relationship starts.

As I said before, Axel is uber-alpha. And I knew that he was into kinky sex and he had a lot of toys so I was afraid of some hard-core BDSM scenes but thank God, the BDSM touch was very light in the book. However, Axel makes it clear that he needs to be in control because he is a Dominant. Although Elizabeth says she is not a Submissive, he tells her that she had to be in control of everything all her life long and she needs to let go and he wants her to let go in his bed, specifically.

Axel explains that they will try stuff and if she likes it, they will do it but if she doesn’t, they won’t. She agrees and discovers that she likes it.

Did I like it? Sorry but no. I hated it when Axel asked her to say, “Yes sir” or “Please, sir” during sex. Nope, not my cuppa. WTF is "sir"? Why not Axel, but sir? No, I will never understand this kind of interaction.

*********************************************

Axel also gives Elizabeth a nickname. Normally, I like most nicknames but I really hated the nickname Axel used for Elizabeth. He calls her “Pet” all along the book.

*********************************************

Despite his kinky taste, I still loved Axel in this book and I liked how possessive and protective he was of Elizabeth. He was also so very emotional and his words – the way he described his feelings - would make a poet jealous…

*********************************************

As for Elizabeth, I can say that I am neutral – or a little bit disappointed. You know there are supporting cast in films and some of them appear only for a minute or so and at the end of the film, you don’t remember them at all. Elizabeth was a character like this – so very forgettable… quite insignificant… There was nothing special about her. Nothing that makes me like her – but also, nothing that makes me hate her. I would have preferred a different kind of woman for a man like Axel. This one was kinda not his match, if you ask me…

*********************************************

All in all, this book was a mediocre read for me.

It is 299 pages and written in the 3rd person.

It is safe as far as cheating concerned. No cheating, no separation, no sex scenes with other people.

*********************************************

Recommendation:

If you want to read some books from this series, I would always recommend you to read Book 1 and Book 4.

Hero and heroine of Book 4 - Knox & Darya - are my favorite couple, and Book 4 is my favorite book of this series.

*********************************************

Some QUOTES from Axel's book

For five years she’d forced herself to be harder. More direct and fearless in her interactions. But around him, it was like the persona that had not only kept her safe, but had pulled her out of the ashes, refused to play.

***

Beckett: “The way you’re lookin’ at her, I’m thinking there’s more to what’s going on than just business and, frankly, I’ve lived for the day you actually fall and claim a woman.”
Axel: “Everyone’s here. Don’t need a basement and a gavel to state she’s mine.”
Jace: “Does she know that yet?”
Axel: “Not yet, and odds are good she’ll fight me every step of the way. But I’ll wage war to make it happen. And I’ll win.”

***

“What changed eight months ago?”
“I saw you. A show you did over in Fort Smith.”
“Why’d you take so long to talk to me?”
He chuckled at that. “Good question.”

He twisted his sake glass like it might somehow dial up the right combination of words. No small feat considering it’d taken him nearly all that time to figure it out for himself.
“Not an easy thing for a man like me to process the kind of reaction I had for you.”
“What kind of reaction?”

Overwhelming.
All-consuming.
Life changing.

***

"Waited a long time to earn that laugh from you. Got it on a night when you gave me your body and opened yourself up to something you weren’t sure about. Got it with you soft beneath me and me still inside you.” He pressed a soft kiss to her lips and murmured, “Gonna fight to keep that. Whatever it takes—whatever you need—I’d kill to keep that laugh and the woman who makes it in my life.”

***

“Not a thing I wouldn’t do to keep you in my life, Elizabeth. No expense I wouldn’t bear. No act I wouldn’t take if it meant keeping you safe and with me.” He soaked in every detail of her face. Traced the line of her cheekbone with his thumb. “That’s what a man does when he’s in love.”

The SONG Axel sings to Elizabeth:

Someone Like You - Van Morrison

I've been searchin' a long time
For someone exactly like you
I've been travelling all around the world
Waiting for you to come through

Someone like you
Will make it all worthwhile
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

I've been travellin' a hard road
Baby, lookin' for someone exactly like you
I've been carrying my heavy load
Waitin' for the light to come shining through

Someone like you
Will make it all worthwhile
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

I've been doing some soul searching
Find out where you're at
I've been up and down the highway
And all kinds of foreign lands

Someone like you
Will make it all worthwhile
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

I've been all around the world
Marching to the beat of a different drum
But just lately I've realized
Baby, the best is yet to come

Someone like you
Will make it all worthwhile
Someone like you
Keep me satisfied
Someone exactly like you

CLIFFHANGER: No
STAR RATING: 3.5 Stars

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

DOWN & DIRTY was not at all what I expected. In a six-books-series you form opinions about side characters, going by the hints and facts the author drops along the way. This story was the one I was looking forward to and anticipating the most.

From the previous books we know that Axel is the eternal bachelor, a man who enjoys his kink and women, a shrewd businessman. We learned quite a bit about him over the course of this series, so when a new fact is sprung on us we are taken aback a little. That Axel's greatest love until Elizabeth is music, that he actually wanted to become a musician that wasn't mentioned in any of the previous stories and it felt a little like Rhenna Morgan didn't know what to do with him until the very last minute. It felt a little too random to make sense to me. I also never pictured him as a musician.

Axel had always been adverse to relationships and, while kind, a little rougher and ruthless, at least that's what I remember from the last books. I didn't expect him to be as sweet and easy to reel in. That too, felt a little out of character. He was a goner the day he met Lizzy and there I thought he'd put up more of a fight - it felt a little too insta-love-like. Gotta say, though, with all my niggles he was an entirely lovable character. Bossy, protecting his family and those he considered his, oozing masculinity and self confidence. He understands Lizzy, how her thought process works and adjusts to give her what she needs. And in the last 15% or so, the Axel I remember from the previous books made an appearance.
“Gonna fight to keep that. Whatever it takes—whatever you need—I’d kill to keep that laugh and the woman who makes it in my life.”

Lizzy was a guarded young woman when she met Axel. She had sass and snark came to her like breathing but it took Axel a while to take apart the distrust she had toward men. Yet, I didn't feel like Lizzy, being the rockstar that she was supposed to be, had that charisma Rhenna Morgan was describing. She felt a little bit boring to me and I really wanted more of a firecracker for Axel.
He’d given her everything. A chance at her dream. A real family. Passion like nothing she’d ever experienced before. Constancy. Affection. Him.

This installment also had less suspense than I'm used to when it comes to this series. I enjoyed the banter between the Haven family that we have come to love so much. Especially Jace, who gave Axel hell during his courtship, repaid him for Axel's needling during his wooing of Vivienne, made me grin and laugh. Their bond is so strong and based on love and loyalty and the meddling just comes with the territory.

DOWN & DIRTY may not have been the bombastic conclusion I wanted it to be but it is a solid story and I do think, read as a standalone, this could be a total winner! I found some beautiful quotes in this book, sweet, deep and beautiful. If you like your romance with a dash of suspense don't hesitate to pick up this series - it's definitely addictive.
“I waited a long time for you, Elizabeth. Years I wish we could have spent together.” He skimmed her lips with his own. “But I’d have waited twice as long if I knew you were my reward.”

***5 ‘Family’ Stars***

I’ve loved and ADORED these books and the characters that run wild through them from the start and was, obviously, excited to get my hands on this one, not only because Axel was going to finally be brought to his knees, but because I just wanted to hang out with the Haven crew as a whole because they are simply a hell of a lot of fun and I wasn’t at all disappointed in any way. In fact, as a while, this is my favorite of the series because it gave me everything I had been hoping for, and a few things I didn’t know I wanted, and in the end, had me wishing there were more words to read because I didn’t want my time with this motley crew to end.

I adored Axel and Lizzie, not that it comes as a surprise in any way shape or form, but they definitely had me entertained throughout the entire book. Axel is all kinds of alpha AF male goodness...and “good” is the operative word here. He’s protective, loyal, compassionate and has a quick and devious mind that simply makes him all that more appealing. Lizzie is a strong woman who’s been burned in the worst of ways, but hasn’t let it get her down ~ at least not in all ways. I loved how she picked herself up (with a little help from some amazing friends) and didn’t give up on what she was passionate about. She may have trust issues, but once she gets the lay of the land, she is all kinds of sweet, sassy and gives as good as she gets.

To say Axel and Lizzie’s journey to their HEA was hot, is an understatement...even nuclear doesn’t do them any justice. From the moment they collided, sparks flew and I knew that there was no way they wouldn’t end up together. But while things are HAWT between them, things do not happen quickly. I loved watching Axel being made to practice patience, while never losing that alpha AF edge he has. As for Lizzie, it gave her the necessary time to see that Axel truly loved every piece of her and only wanted to help give her the world.

I’m pretty sure I’ve said this in each book I’ve reviewed in this series, but a good portion of my love comes from the Haven crew. From the mom’s, the brothers and their women and all the way down to Levi and Mary, I simply LOVE hanging out with all of them and seeing how all of their relationships have evolved and made them all stronger, and this one has all kinds of family goodness going on and I couldn’t get enough of it (and as an FYI, I still want to grow up to be like the mom’s). This has been a fun series to read and am crossing my toes that we’ll see more of the brothers in the future (Ok. I know there will be a few sightings at least) because there are still a couple who need HEA’s...just sayin’ *BSEG*

Ummmmm I'm quite confused as to what exactly happened here, this is in no way, shape or form the Axel that I expected. I'm stunned! And I honestly didn't like the h 😲 from my previous reviews it's evident that I loved this series, I went so far as to try for an arc through Netgalley and I am the type of reader who never accepts arcs, (except if they come from Kati Wilde cuz Lord knows I love her books) but I was so excited for this story I still tried my luck. Now obviously I didn't get it 😂 but I waited,pre-ordered, then reread all the previous books just to be fully prepared for this one and man it did not go my way!!!! I'll wait to rate until I reread because at this point I'm really hoping that this was some fluke on my part 😭

This review was originally posted on Addicted To RomanceI received this book for free from Carina Press in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Down and Dirty is the sixth book in the Haven Brotherhood series and man I am loving this series so much, its similiar to a MC setting but not really a full MC. But there is a strong brotherhood, and I just love the two “mothers” that these men took care of and didn’t judge their lifestyle. They are all alpha like personalities but Axel is full on ALPHA Male and this book introduces some BDSM into the relationship. I honestly couldn’t remember if I had seen signs in the beginning that Axel was into BDSM from the previous books and even though I really enjoyed this book BDSM elements aren’t really my favorite aspects to see in the bedroom to be honest but I did feel that Rhenna Morgan did a good job with introducing this into the story.

Our heroine is a rock singer, and she and her band do what they can to make do. Izzy had a bad experience with a man she was with that took advantage of her trust and betrayed her and even though its been years, she still doesn’t date and doesn’t  have much interest in men until she meets Axel who gets her a job at his club and seeks more than just a business relationship….he wants her in a long term relationship and isn’t shy about it, and even introduces her to his family. But it will take some doing to show her that she can trust him and they there is something electric and worth investing in.

We see the fears that Izzy has, but we also see the determination that Axel has in showing the one woman he cares about how a good man treats his girl and I love that he is so in tune with her wants and desires and knows what she needs and deserves. There is some fun bantering that goes on between them as well as seeing them explore some kinky stuff in the bedroom. Now its not super strong BDSM but its definitely a element of the story so if you love BDSM….you definitely need to grab this book up. But outside of the bedroom, is where their relationship really shines and we see it in the nuances of their relationships and how well matches Izzy and Axel are for each other.

There are some crazy and fun times with the brotherhood of course and as the reader you feel the magnetism between these two. I have had such a fun time with this series and I honestly never want it to end. Its been a blast to see each member find love and the emotion that is displayed in this book is simply unforgettable and I would like to say that this author is simply wonderful to read. There is no one like her that writes such a compelling story that she does and this book has everything you would want in a romance.

Overall I found Down and Dirty to be packed with sharp wit, delicious alpha males, a relatable heroine and a romance that is full of spice and sweet to quench any palette!! TRULY WELL DONE!

Elizabeth and Axel’s story was everything I wanted and then some! Axel’s sexy, Scottish self and silver tongue more then met his match with Elizabeth’s feisty temperament and artistic personality. Their chemistry was intense and insanely hot! The time Axel invested building foundations of trust with Elizabeth while simultaneously sinking her deep into the folds of his crazy, supportive, and rambunctious family simply melted my heart like nothing else! And while I enjoyed seeing the rest of the crew, and gracious knows they can provide endless entertainment, I loved how the focus was all about Axel and Elisabeth.

Book six in the Men of Haven series, Down and Dirty was a flipping fantastic read that will rock your world!

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

I have loved every single one of the books in the series, and cannot really believe that this is book 6! I really recommend that you read them in order - and I can say that these are in my Absolute must reread list, as I am sure that reading one after the other will be a delicious experience.

Lizzy is about to experience what being part of the Haven family is all about, and we can catch up with them all in the process. She really can't believe what is happening, and having been burned once, she is wary of trusting again, but as she gets to know them all, it is impossible to resist. The Mums, in particular, remain such a force of nature, and their wish to see Axel happy and to give Lizzy the support that she missed out on from her own parents.

Axel has always been a bit aloof, and so seeing him find the woman of his dreams is the perfect finale for the Haven family. The fact that he can fulfil his dream of succeeding in the music business through her is just the icing on the cake. I loved the whole storyline, and the showdown which both gave Lizzy a harsher view of Axel, but also the guarantee of his love for her.

Perfect epilogue to a wonderfully romantic and action filled story. Thank you so much Rhenna Morgan for sharing the Men of Haven with us.

Rhenna Morgan continues her “Men of Haven” series with Down and Dirty, a tale of Scottish bad boy who put his dream of being a musician on hold many years ago and is now determined to win the heart of a talented woman who captivated him on sight and share the spotlight with her.

Elizabeth Hemming, an up and coming rock singer, would love to make it big in the music industry. Her previous manager and lover made it close to impossible for her to trust anyone. When a bar owner tries to pull a fast one, Axel McKee steps up to save the night and the damsel. If only Lizzy would let him.

He’s got a plan, not just to help launch her career but to win her over completely because he glimpsed his destiny the moment he saw her on stage. She only needs to realize it, but what will happen when her past comes back to haunt her?

Axel and Elizabeth’s attraction is palpable, but it takes time and effort to get her to realize she can trust him. When their relationship moves from tempting to scorching hot Axel must also prove the depth of his devotion to her. Swoon!

In addition to creating a sexy, sweet, and heartwarming romance, Morgan has once again woven in a group of warm, welcoming and supportive family who are perfect for a gal like Lizzy. You will fall in love with them every bit as much as you’ll fall with the romance.

Axel and Lizzy were an appealing couple. Even though I felt Axel was a bit heavy handed and sometimes went over the top, I was swept away by their story.

Down & Dirty is book #6 of the Men of Haven series by Rhenna Morgan. It is a sweet and sexy standalone contemporary romance, told from both points of view with a happy ending.

Merged review:

Rhenna Morgan continues her “Men of Haven” series with Down and Dirty, a tale of Scottish bad boy who put his dream of being a musician on hold many years ago and is now determined to win the heart of a talented woman who captivated him on sight and share the spotlight with her.

Elizabeth Hemming, an up and coming rock singer, would love to make it big in the music industry. Her previous manager and lover made it close to impossible for her to trust anyone. When a bar owner tries to pull a fast one, Axel McKee steps up to save the night and the damsel. If only Lizzy would let him.

Down & Dirty by Rhenna Morgan is book six in the Men of Haven Series. This is the story of Izzy and Axel. I felt this could be a standalone book if you wish to do so. I have loved the books I have read in this series, so I would also recommend them too. Axel has also made appearances in the books but again it shouldn't slow you down from enjoying their story.
Elizabeth 'Izzy' has been hurt in the past by a man so she has learned to be guarded and forget about relationships, so she works towards her signing career. Axel is a man who loves women and doesn't slow down on the loving until he meets Izzy. When he meets her, he knows she is pretty much it for him, but Izzy on the skittish side. Axel will go slow (or try to) but nothing slowing him down for his goal of Izzy. Another hot and exciting read from Ms. Morgan!

This book takes me back to Prince charming with a twist. I love a man who takes charge and don't stop until your happiness is secure. Axel is that man. He love hard and is sensitive to his partners need. I start this book and did not stop until it was finish. If you want a great read with a little Dom play, this is your book and you won't regret it. Great job Rhenna

Axel does love to cover his bases, “because, Elizabeth, I’m done waiting, and I wanted all my cards out on the table before I make you mine.” Axel just has a sexy accent, “ah, lass. Ye’ve always got something edible for me. I think we proved that yesterday mornin’, but I’m happy tae remind ye again if ye need tae learn the lesson again.” I liked this book, I loved Axel.

I started Rhenna Morgan’s Men of Haven series late in the game, with book five, Stand and Deliver. I really liked it, and picked up a few of the previous titles as well as the next in the series, Down & Dirty. Each book is designed to be read as a standalone but there are glimpses of secondary characters throughout. Accordingly the hero in Down & Dirty, Axel, is one who has been around since the beginning and fans of the series have been waiting for his turn at an HEA. Unfortunately, while he definitely fits the alpha male type of the heroes in this series, some of his actions come at the expense of the heroine, making this one an okay read but not as enjoyable as I’d hoped.

Lizzy and her band are still working their way through dive bars in the hopes of making it big. When a bar owner tries to renege on their agreed-upon contract, she gets an unexpected helping hand from a handsome and commanding stranger, a man who gives her the good kind of shivers.

Axel McKee has been waiting for his opportunity to introduce himself to Lizzy, a woman whose career he has been shadowing for several months. He’s seen her potential, not just as a musician, but also as a woman who could be the perfect match for him. Offering to put the weight of his name and business acumen (and money) behind her to give her a career a leg up is an easy choice. But Lizzy has been burned by a man before, her manager-slash-boyfriend having nearly destroyed her once lofty ambitions. Can she find it in herself to trust again – and is Axel the key to her happy ever after?

This is a music-themed Cinderella-type story, with a heroine who is working hard to make a name for herself suddenly offered the resources that can give her a boost, complete with a handsome prince at her side. It sounds great – so why do I feel conflicted about Axel as a hero? Maybe it’s a bit of resentment that a man has to be the one to ‘rescue’ her, instead of Lizzy making it on her own. When they first meet, Lizzy introduces herself as Lizzy but Axel insists on calling her Elizabeth, ignoring that she doesn’t like to be called that. Running roughshod over her objections was the first clue that Axel wasn’t going to be the man of the hour for me.

Axel is a dominant man in all facets of his life, including in the bedroom. From the first moment he’d seen Lizzy he’d been aware of her ‘submissive’ side (his conclusion about her, not her own) and he takes it upon himself to show her that side of her personality, as though he knows better than her what she likes. Everything happens with her consent and their sex scenes are definitely hot as they flirt with some BDSM themes, particularly bondage and Dominance/submission. Despite Axel’s arrogant assumptions that he knows best about everything for Lizzy and his tendency to take charge, he has a sincere desire to help her achieve stardom and show her a loving and supportive family structure (the men of Haven and their partners). In the end it’s Lizzy’s feelings about Axel that matter the most, and he proves, with his actions towards her and her band partners, that his intentions are genuine and that he is trustworthy.

Axel’s drive to promote Lizzy’s musical success comes from his own aborted career. Instead of focusing on himself, he and his brother-by-choice Jace had done everything they could to help their mothers lift themselves out of poverty. Their mothers live together at the Haven compound and all of the men’s financial success has been inspired by them, and used to create a safe environment for the other male friends who’ve proven their worth. The men of Haven will stop at nothing to protect their found family, and when Axel finds out just what Lizzy’s former manager did to her and to other young and naïve performers, he and his friends take action. For Lizzy, having new female friends and two moms who adopt her as their own, is equally as important as her feelings for Axel. Lizzy gets a happy ending in all sorts of ways, not just in terms of the romance, and it’s Axel who makes it possible. Perhaps readers familiar with him from other books will overlook the issues I had with his behaviour and be glad to see him finding the woman of his dreams. I still plan to catch up on other books in the series and maybe they’ll alter my opinion of him. Time will tell. In the meantime if you’re looking for an alpha male-led story with a Cinderella theme and lots of sexy times, this one might do.

I was also gifted with an ARC from Rhenna & to say I was shocked then was on cloud nine was an understatement!!

Rhenna over the couple of years has become one of my go to Authors & is my top 4 favourites. There are stories where you feel like you are over seeing the story then there are stories where you feel like you apart of the book.
That is exactly what Rhenna's books do for me & I wanted to stay in Axel's book for ever (happy sigh)

During this book I started to take notes what I loved about this book

* I didn't release how much I missed the Haven family until you are back surround by them & I love there sense of family plus there family values even if you aren't family by blood
* When Lizzy final accepted her relationship with Axle even before her touch he had my nipples attention!
* Loved it when he called her Elizabeth

If you haven't read all the brothers of Haven before you get to Axle I would recommend it as by the time you get to Axel's story you will know the ins & outs of there Haven family.

Axel had set his eyes on Lizzy for months before he approach her as she is a singer who has been burnt before & has her shields up way high. The most beautiful thing to read is how Axel peeled away her shield & put her back together again.

There is a touch of BDSM but it is only talked about & how Axel likes control in the bedroom but holy smokes girls hold on to your panties because they are going to go up in smoke.

This is one of my favourite books of the year so far !!

Perfect title as Axel gets Down and Dirty to protect and claim Elizabeth, the musician that’s stolen his heart. I loved getting to revisit the men of Haven and the women who dared to love them.

*I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I’m not even going to sugar coat this one. I’ve been waiting for Axel’s story since this series started and I couldn’t be more satisfied....even though I know we’re nearing the end of this series (were running out of Haven Men 😩).

Axel is one of the many Haven Brothers. In fact, many might agree that he and Jace were the originators. Having come from a not-so-great childhood and vowing to take care of his family, he’s done quite well for himself. But there’s one thing that he never finished. One thing that no one outside his family even knows about. Music. Besides a little kink in the bedroom and his family members, music makes him happy. That’s most likely why he’s the one in charge of booking the bands for their clubs. And after discovering one particular band, his life will never be the same.

Lizzy is a guitarist and lead singer of her band. She’s busted her butt for years, yet she can’t seem to get any further than a few dive bars. After being chewed up and spit out by a previous band manager, letting people in to her enter circle and trusting them isn’t easy. That is until a stranger walks in to a bar. Sound ominous? Nah. Just the beginning of a fairy tale coming true.

I loved this so much. Axel finally found the woman he needed to completely center him. Although Lizzy has been through a lot, she wasn’t spineless, even if she did respond submissively to Axel. Of course we got to revisit with some of the Haven family members. But this was the book that had me falling even more in love with the moms. I wonder if they’ll get their own books one day 🤔 (crossing fingers). I really hope so!!!

This is the last book in the Men of Haven series. I want to tell you it’s been a really wild ride. I am kinda sad to see these characters go. So it hurts me to tell you that Axel’s book, the surly, mysterious, co-leader of Haven, just didn’t work for me. It was only toward the end of the book that made up for the immense power imbalance that made this book hard for me to get on board. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad book. It was just a character thing for me. While all the men in Haven are over-the-top Alpha dickheads, I still love them. But this heroine had some issues that I feel needed something more in the beginning and not so much toward the end. That’s because I already had Axel on the “you crossed the line” list. If you’re a fan of the series, I would tell you happy reading. I would tell you that Axel takes his head out of his ass. It just took too long for me. If you are new to the series, this book stands alone well. I personally think that you would rather appreciate starting at the first book, though. Jace is still my No. 1 and he did some stupid shit in his book as well.

Lizzy Hemming is working the bar scene with her band, taking any and all gigs hoping to get past the plateau they have hit. Lizzy is talented, gorgeous, and a little gun-shy since her last manager/boyfriend screwed her big time. He was abusive, stole her songs, and copyrighted them in his name. Her home life isn’t a tale of bicycles, bedtime stories, and kissed scrapped knees. Thank goodness for Rex, an older gentleman who took her in like a daughter. All Lizzy has is her band and Rex. While she’s playing in Dallas,

Axel has been following her career path, and he’s also a little bit in lust. While she’s playing at the Crow, Rex, who has been her stand-in manager, couldn’t make it down to deal with the slime-ball owner. It’s up to Lizzy to get their portion of the money. While the owner is trying to screw her out of the band’s percentage, Axel makes his presence known and royally pisses off Lizzy, even though Axel makes sure she gets what she is entitled to. Axel gives her his card to call him, and while she is tempted, she holds out.

Axel McKee is a power to be reckoned with. Which is to say he is a bit of a bully. If he thinks his choices are right and it’s about protecting what he deems his, well, you have no say. While Axel loves hard, is a Dom in the bedroom, and an alpha-hole outside of it, boy, he rubbed me wrong through 80% of this book. While he is pulling strings to get her better gigs in his clubs, and wooing her bandmates, and Rex., he’s a damned hurricane. Lizzy is wary and not so trusting. I don’t blame her. Axe brings Lizzy and the band to meet his family. Once Lizzy gets a feel for who Axe is and his people, she lowers her guard slightly. Meanwhile, Axe is moving heaven and earth because, while he may have not been able to live his dream of music, he can’ help to want to see someone as talented as Lizzy make it. They strike a deal – he will be her manager and Lizzy is going to make some sweet music. This way he can live vicariously through the woman he is starting to care for deeply.

Lizzy opens up about her past with the ex, her horrible mother, and spineless father. This is what really bothers me the most. Axe knows she’s not loved. She has been bullied, verbally and physically abused, especially when she had no power and no voice. He just takes over her life, making decisions, what’s best for her, etc. While reading these parts of the book, I would get very frustrated. I understand Axel is coming from a good place, t. There is no mistaking he’s a good guy. His way of going about things are horrible and all I kept thinking is, “Axel, you dickhead, she needs an equal partner who has her back.” That’s how she should be taking back her power. Instead, we just get more dominance in the bedroom and I started to feel suffocated. Things are progressing in Lizzy’s career and her relationship with Axe and his family. Her ex bumps into her at a digital radio show and he comes onto the scene wanting to use her. Things heat up with him and Axe, and his family are all working overtime to find out all the dirt on this piece of garbage.

Things are coming to a head, and Lizzy decides to take matters into her own hands. With the help of the ladies of Haven, she embarks on taking Joffrey down once and for all. It’s at this point that Axel’s mom intervenes and has a come-to-Jesus talk with her son. We are about 80% in and he finally realizes that Lizzy needs to do this and he needs to step back and support her. Thank goodness, because this book was teetering on a big fat D. While it took most of the book for Axel to pull his head out of his ass, I did enjoy how it all came to an end. Axel and Lizzy are really sweet together and their HEA is pretty damned fantastic. I just wish Axel would have seen the light sooner, rather than later. I had such a hard time with the power differences. I loved this series and I still highly recommend it. There is something very powerful about the family you choose, rather than who you are born to. The closeness of Axel and his brothers and the women who love them is nicely done. I do wish we would have gotten to see the moms get their HEA. Maybe I can hope for novellas.
Overall, a great series. It’s hard to say goodbye.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review.
This is the sixth book in the Men of Haven series. With each book about one of the men, we also get a glimpse of the other men of the Haven family too. This is Axel McKee's story and the one I have been waiting for.
Axel has been watching Lizzy and her band for a while now but he never felt the need to step in and give her assistants until the night he overheard the bar owner trying to underpay her for the gig they just finished. When he first saw her, he could not believe the way he was drawn to her. And all he wanted was to keep her safe and make her career take off.
Lizzy can't believe this sexy stranger has stuck his nose in her business. Who does he think he is? Can she trust him at what he is telling her? She is drawn to him and she wants to believe he just wants to help her but with her past, she doesn't have many people she trust in this world.
Can Lizzy learn that with Axel comes a family that she has never known and will grow to love as her own? Will Axel be able to take things slow so he doesn't scare her off? What happens when her past comes back to haunt her? Will Axel catch her if he falls? Is there a chance that she and the band can get better gigs much less an album recorded?
I have loved each book but I think this one is my favorite, we learn more about Axel's love for music and his past and his own secrets. I loved how he was with Lizzy, that he knew what was going through her head even before she did and he knew just what she needed to get out of her own head.
I can't recommend this series enough, just read them in order, you don't want to miss a thing. Thanks Rhenna Morgan for sharing the Men of Haven with us.

I found myself laughing at the start of this one. Axel, the man-whore struck dumb when he meets Lizzy, impressed with her on many levels. I like that the didn't immediate go after her as a woman, but was more drawn to help her in her career. I loved that Lizzy was a bit leery and made Axel work just to get her one gig. From there things seemed to go full steam ahead. Axel knew she was the one for him, so of course he involves the family, they all swoop in and help him help Lizzy with her career and also give her a big clan to help her. And boy does she need help, help to get a bastard that wronged her in the past. Axel and the guys had a plan to ruin him and were keeping it secret. The ladies decided that Lizzy needed to do something, which forced the guys hand. But even with them upping the time table it lead to a great take down of someone who really needed it.

I loved the ending, loved the quiet time and new beginnings for Axel and Lizzy.

Like many readers, I’ve been waiting for Axel’s story with bated breath, and while the wait has been painful, I’m so glad that the primary characters have now been accounted for. I must admit that Axel’s story was not what I was expecting, (not that I really know what I was expecting anyway), but I suppose I can best describe it as more subdued than I anticipated based on the previous books in this series. Don’t get me wrong, the book is great, but it was lacking the same level of intensity and suspense that was front and centre in the previous five books.

The story had informative world building and the usual dramatic background for the heroine of the moment, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Hemming. Lizzy was a firecracker, and not to be messed with if you value your safety. But underneath this tough and hardened exterior, is a woman who has been wronged both emotionally and physically in the past, so naturally this vulnerability draws Axel like a moth to the flame. But what ultimately drew him in was the strength and sass of this perplexing woman, and her caring and protective nature that has survived a harsh and loveless upbringing.

I did like Axel and Elizabeth’s story, but for me personally, this was not the best book of the series. I also expected more resistance from Axel, as he has never hidden his lack of desire for a long-term relationship, so his smitten attitude to Lizzy was unexpected. For me there were gaps in this story, especially in regards to tame approach to Axel’s BDSM proclivities. As an avid reader of the BDSM genre, and based on the implications regarding Axel's lifestyle in previous books, I expected more.

I have no doubt that Ms Morgan will wow readers with something exciting and addictive in the future, and as an avid fan of her exceptional writing, I’ll be eagerly waiting for what comes next. And while I’m sure many readers will find this conclusion to the Men of Haven acceptable, Down & Dirty is a 3 1/2 Star story for me.

The Men of Haven: fierce passion, unyielding loyalty.

Especially when it comes to their women.

A powerful man

Axel McKee abandoned his musical career years ago in favor of becoming a power player on the music scene. His dreams of the spotlight are over—and he’s better off for it. Working with his Haven brothers and building their empire is enough for him.

One who commanded attention with nothing more than a look

And then came Lizzy. A dynamic, beautiful powerhouse of a performer unlike any he’s seen or heard before. Her presence leaps off stage and into the heart of anyone who watches her sing. Axel wants her. Wants to help her and collaborate with her… But more than anything, he wants to be with her.

And every ounce of his attention was locked on her

Two things are immediately obvious: Lizzy’s been burned before, and earning her trust will be Axel’s biggest challenge yet. If he can get this fierce, stubborn, talented woman to see the passion and care that he’s offering, he might get a chance at a new dream—sharing the spotlight with the woman he loves.

One-click with confidence. This title is part of the Carina Press Romance Promise : all the romance you’re looking for with an HEA/HFN. It’s a promise!

My Thoughts

Upon returning to the world and the intense characters that make up the Men, and women, of Haven deep into the read Axel's devotion to Elizabeth Hemming was summed up beautifully in a lovemaking scene.

Alone they were each strong, determined people. Driven and talented in their own ways. But together they were unstoppable. A unique dynamic he still didn't fully understand and was done with trying to, but was absolutely committed to protecting. To building and forging the rest of his life around it.

She was his.

His woman.

His heart.

His Elizabeth.

All of us strive to be loved and accepted for ourselves by someone special so it is no surprise to me just how powerfully the above resonated within my own heart when I read it.

These characters have taken every hard knock life has thrown their way and risen above those misfortunes while finding strength in the love for each other that they show often and well. A love that has expanded outward to embrace each of the men's choices of significant others as well.

For Lizzy Hemming that revelation was an eye opener as she grew up without the love and support of a family. By being brought into the one Axel is a part of and fully accepted for herself without reservation or expectations placed upon her is as frightening as it is wonderful.

I only thought that in previous books this group of characters was interesting to say the least, in this story the fun side is explored more as well.

Also Axel McKee proved himself to be a wonderful lead character with surprises in store for the reader that are unexpected but oh so enjoyable to discover!

Reading this book as a stand-alone may or may not work simply because their is a lot of back story contained in the previous 5 books, but it is a beautifully executed addition to the series on it’s own merits anyway.

Especially since the backdrop of the music industry is part of what makes the story so well rounded a read, along with spending time with the entire cast of characters together for a good part of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley for granting my request for an ARC of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion.

In my head, Axel was portrayed by Jason Momoa. Do I need to say more? Hahahaha. But kidding aside, I really liked Axel's story because I am a fan of heroes who are alpha hot, who have a possessive-yet-protective streak a mile wide. So on the book boyfriend scale, Axel hits all the right buttons. He is beyond yummy!

But I must say that I wasn't as in love with Lizzy. (Hence the 4-stars.) I think that's because I was expecting more from the woman who'd end up with Axel. I like my heroines to be more snarky and kickass and she really wasn't --- which is totally in keeping with Lizzy's personality and background. It all works out, mind you --- their couple dynamic, I mean --- but I wasn't all swoony about both of the MCs. Again, let me say that I just had a different sort of personality in mind for the love of his life. Shrugs.

On the whole, this was a great finale to an awesome series. I think fans of the series will be happy.

P.S. I knew, from hints in the previous books, that Axel's story was going to have a BDSM flavor to it --- which, honestly, is not really my thing. That being said, I thought that the BDSM scenes in this book were mild and dare I say, pretty safe; so please don't expect any hard-core sexy times.

Just read this book, OMG! it's so entertaining. Love the Axel & Sylvie accent! I love that Lizzy can hold her own, now that she has FAMILY. I love that REX can help Lizzy understand Axel. Will the mom's (Ninette and Sylvie) get their own book? I would love to see the guys try to change their mom's opinions.

So well written i could not put it down. Read the whole book in 1 day. Rhenna Morgan thank you for writing this book. Big hugs for your struggles and i am in complete awe that you were still able to write with everything going on. I am one of your fans and Keep writing so I can keep reading.

Do the kids get their books too? How about Danny? I think he needs a mate too!

*Warning* Must wear gloves, turn on the A/C and have a cooler of ice cold drinks as well as a fire extinguisher handy ;) ... “DOWN and DIRTY” deserves 6+ stars IMHO, and showcases contemporary fiction at its very best! ... Get ready for a wild roller-coaster ride as we witness the torrid-hot romance between Axel & Lizzy with a touch of erotica, a good portion of drama and suspense, and the always satisfying sweet revenge! This book grabbed me by the throat from the start & wouldn’t let go, keeping me glued to my seat not wanting to stop whenever real life got in the way!! ... I didn’t want it to end, but was too addicted to slow down, then it left me craving more & threw in a major book hangover at the end! :o
Ms. Morgan has exceeded all her previous phenomenal stories in this series, and then she totally raised the bar with this newest upcoming novel, not only for herself, but also for her fellow peers ;) Each fresh, new story in the Men of Haven (Brotherhood) is masterfully woven, has well-defined & relatable characters that practically jump off the pages with their witty dialogue! ... Not just the hot, sexy ‘alpha’ males with their hearts of gold, but also the smart, sassy, take-charge women, too! ... Amazing vivid descriptions and attention-to-detail, plus surprise twists and turns, had me either laughing or crying, and then other times my heart pounding fast! ... I just know this entertaining story will have (adults 18+) fans of fiction addicted like me, as they turn the pages like crazy, too :D ... BTW, each of these must read novels can stand alone, but due to the fan-freaking-tastic recurring characters in these 6 connecting books, I strongly suggest reading them in order for your optimal reading pleasure ;) ...
I never write spoilers or recap blurbs, but I do know when a book is phenomenal and then some like this one! ... Even tho I volunteered to read this in advance, it was without any outside influences and these are my own honest feelings! This 6th & final story (actually the whole series) are now in my top 5, all-time favorite series ever, in over 30 years of being an avid reader of various genres of romantic fiction! Even tho I’m really sad to see this series end, I am keeping my fingers crossed for some kind of future spin-off ;) (pretty please?!) But I’ll always be anxious for anything new from the magic pen of this talented author :D
