A Shifting Society #2

Destined to Run

Rate this book
I refuse to be a pawn.
My father sees me as nothing more than a thing to trade for more wealth and power, but I’d rather die than live the life arranged for me.
I need to escape, and when a half-dead shifter climbs through my window, I may just have the perfect excuse. If this stranger is found, he’ll be slaughtered, but hiding him would spell my doom.
I’m not like my father. I can’t let this man die simply for what he was born as. We need to run, get him back to his pride, and hope I can convince them to hide me.
From the moment I was born, I was destined to run. I just pray I’m fast enough to outrun my fate.

This is a HEA Standalone, 18+ RH novel, which means our leading lady doesn't need to choose between her love interests. While there are numbers attached to the series, it is simply because it is a shared universe. ANY books in this series, by either myself or Sterling, will be HEA standalones following a different group of people, but with fun cameo appearances.

"Who knew that affection was so addictive?"

A sweet, funny and delightful story, Destined to Run is a tale perfect for anyone in search of a wonderful feel good read!

Rin refuses to be a pawn in her father's plans for more wealth and power and live the life he's arranged for her but there's no escape in sight.
Until a half-dead shifter climbs through her window in the middle of the night. That might just give her the perfect excuse. If he survives.

Of course Rin is a bit reluctant to even approach the shifter at first. After all, she might just end up like 'the stupid chick that gets murdered in the movies' with her face bitten off. But she can’t let the man die simply for what he was born as. Even if he has an intimidating set of claws and fangs. So Rin pulls herself together and with a sincere warning of "If you bite me, so help me I will drop your ass," she tends to the shifter's wounds.

And when he heals, they run. Off into the wilds, to the shifter's pride. And Rin flees from her father only to suddenly find herself faced with three shifters who're set on proving that she belongs to them.
Of course she won't have it and make them work to gain her trust and affection - normal human dates included. And the three scarred and broken males slowly warm their way into her heart. But the past won't stay hidden and trouble is brewing. And the little shifter pride may just have to bring all claws out to keep their mate safe.

Fast paced and absolutely endearing, Destined to Run is a fun-filled and adorably sweet tale that's bound to make you both sigh and smile. If the one-sided conversations in between a girl and an ocelot won't have you cracking up, then said ocelot trying to scribble words on a paper, while clumsily holding a pen in between it's jaws, is bound to do the trick.

And don't even let me get started on the affection! There's a big difference between sex and affection and even though this book has quite a few steamy hot scenes, the affection is what really sets it apart. Sweet, clingy and adorable affection that each and every one of us would love to have in our lives. It is downright sigh-worthy.

Sweetness and fun, great characters and feeling, this book has it all.
The only reason I'm not rating it a full 5 stars is because some things felt a bit rushed plotwise and those did disrupt a little the flow of the tale.

If you're on the lookout for a great RH PNR to make you feel all mushy inside, you have got to give this one a try. It's downright delightful.

Happy reading everyone
and remember:

I am so loving this world where the books are written by alternate authors all stand alones but share some of teh back ground characters.
I really love Rin and this book has some really amusing moments
Her first mate is stuck in cat form when she meets him and is unable to turn back - he is wounded and at deaths door when he finds himself in her care and in turn later saves her from a forced arranged marriage - feeing together to the sanctuary of the wilds where Rin meets her two other mates.
There is something about this storey that is so endearing and you will love the characters
Brilliantly written, Fabulous character building and just so good!
I am becoming addicted to this world and cant wait for the next book in the series.

This is an outstanding standalone book within a shared universe. They do have more than one author and it is fantastic to see how they blend the stories together whilst keeping them separate at the same time!

We join Rin, the daughter of a big-city businessman in this story. Though she has everything she could want, she is kept in a gilded cage. One night she is awoken by the sound of something climbing and falling through her window. She is one of the few humans that does not shun shifters and as a result rushes to help the injured animal. All the while hiding it from her hateful father, who is starting to lose his hold on his temper. After he arranges her marriage to someone she loathes, Rin gets the idea in her head to run. Striking a deal with an ocelot who can't shift back she goes on the run to get him back to his pride, and hopefully out from under whatever spell he is under.

I can not tell you how much I love the fact that one of the main characters is an ocelot! It's one of my favorite animals so it makes me immediately love Osiris. You will recognize that name if you had read Destined to Hide as he is mentioned briefly in there. As I said before it is a shared universe so you see some of the characters reappear and make their cameos in this book.

Rin is adorable in the sense that she is not cut out for "roughing it". Nature is not always on her side but her stubborn streak keeps her going on and she will not be beaten. She has quite a few quirky ticks, like having a running commentary with a cat who can not talk back!

The world-building is fantastic, as are the details to character/location. I can really see things as they are happening and that is so important to me. You definitely feel transported into this world, and I for one do not want to leave! I love the humor and banter in this book- I seriously burst out laughing numerous amounts of time! This book will leave you wanting the next book (and soon), and a shifter mate (or three). It's such a fun read and I highly recommend it! This book can be read on its own or in order- which is my recommendation!

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

After reading the book by Thomas I can admit to being curious about the other new human mate to come to this small town. I now know all about it thanks to this little gem of a read. Rin has grown up as the only child of a rich man that pretty much runs her life. She wants to be on her own but instead of supporting that Daddy forces her into an arranged marriage agreement. During this she has saved a shifter that showed up in her room knowing he will be killed if her dad finds out. Ozzy helps her escape taking her back to his pride which is a skill since he is tuck in animal form unable to communicate with her. This makes things interesting once they arrive and the other two hot guys fill in the blanks. Fixing everything leads them on a merry adventure but leads to their HEA none the less. Makes for a captivating shifter read that fans of RH are sure to enjoy. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

The second in the series and we get to meet some secondary characters properly as they are the leads in this novel. Rin's in a world that she rather not be. Controlled and sheltered by her father. Her world is turned upside by her discovery of Orisis. He comes crashing into her bedroom and open her eyes . She needs to run and fast.

Kearston foray into this world was perfect as it tied in well with the first book. It answered the unanswered questions I had about Rin and the others. Rin was interesting character who had the power to destroy the obstacles and was pretty smart. It helped get things done when it mattered and Rin deserved the ending she got

Kearston has done it again. She builds worlds that you want to be a part of and characters that you absolutely fall in love with. Rin is probably one of my favorite FMCs of any book that I have read. She is hilarious and uses her comedy to deal with uncomfortable or scary situations. The guys are amazingly broken in their own ways but after meeting Rin they show wear their flaws and confront their troubled pasts head on. Rin, Osiris, Ares and Cole fit so seamlessly together that you can’t help but root for them.

I absolutely loved this book and can’t wait to see what other characters Kearston writes for this universe. I’m secretly hoping Ian ends up as a main character in another book in this series. Although he was only in a few chapters, I instantly adored him.

plot holes

I loved the story but there was so much going on for a stand-alone. I will admit that this was the first book I read even though it's the second in the "universe" or series.

***spoilers***

Her dad went from decent and caring to psychotic... he brought up her mom several times and dropping hints but no answers were given

What happened with Sarah?

What kind of epilogue was that? Ian stayed around and now they manage the bakery? Why didn't we ever get to see her happy with Osiris (and yes I wanted it to be spicy)

Why wasn't it ever explained that she, as a human, was able to form a pack bond?

Probably something to do with her mom. But again. We got no answers. And since all of the books are standalones I bet we don't get one.

Frustrating.

Now this was a great story. Loved that’s it takes place in a shared universe. Storyline was just fantastic. From start to finish I literally had to finish it ASAP. J Kearston really did a great job with this one. I love all her stories. This one is a favorite.

I'm going to call this 3.5 stars, mostly because there was some really hilarious banter and i thought the MCs had great chemistry. Unfortunately parts of the plot were like Swiss cheese so that knocked it down a bit.

For starters FMC was awfully blase about her father abruptly becoming abusive to the point of leaving her bloodied and bruised and even more blasé about seeing her 'husband' ripped to shreds in front of her. Not even a touch of PTSD for little miss sheltered rich girl?

They all talked ad nauseum about how shifters help out shifters but don't seem to ask a single person for help or information with Osiris.

They immediately leap to 'we need to kidnap a mage' and stick to that plan even when a mage literally gives them a heads up and demonstrates they aren't all insane monsters. What's the next part of the plan anyway? Kidnap an all powerful someone and then hope they aren't going to murder you when you demand they cast a spell?

There's this thing called money. You can offer it for services before you resort to kidnapping.
For some reason this world seems to have cell phones but no one has invented Craigslist or even reddit, some place where idiots can look stuff up or ask for advice or help before driving to the nearest town and hoping for the best. They drove for over a day with the kidnapped mage without even bothering to ask him if he could help! For all they knew it was a five minute spell or he just had to snap his fingers or something.

They also make a huge deal about how if you get involved with the human police as a shifter you might as well be dead or worse..... and then FMC frames Cole's parents and calls the cops on them. Soooooo.... i guess we're all cool with them being murdered/raped or imprisoned for life? Good thing she checked with her mates before doing such an insane thing without any of the facts.

They also skimmed over the fact that one of the shifters tore her rich, powerful 'husband' to shreds and they were then seen in the vicinity of a massacre. I don't care how well she explained herself in the ten minutes she was at the police station, unless she somehow bribed every single cop in there they wouldn't just shrug and say 'guess it was all a big coincidence!'

This isn't really a plot hole so much as it made me roll my eyes... FMC exclaiming over the fact that the black panther shifter knows who Bagheera is because no one has EVER read The Jungle... oh. No, I guess not even FMC has read it, she's seen one of the 50,000 movies they've made of it, but she's totally not like other girls, you guys. No one EVER gets her very obscure references.

OK now I'm just being petty. Sorry about that.

Finally they also make a big deal about how they shouldn't have sex before Osiris can join in.... then the moment he's not around they go for broke, even though he can still hear it all through the mind connection.

That was just mean.

Destined to Run is J. Kearston’s contribution to the “Destined” shifter-fated mates’ series. Destined to Run is a stand-alone novel with a couple of appearances of some familiar names/characters if you’ve read Sterling Thomas’ contribution – Destined to Hide.
Destined to Run introduces readers to Rin, a young human woman who while having been raised to believe that shifters are violent and dangerous finds herself helping and harboring an injured shifter in her bedroom. Shifters are treated horribly and like monsters after humans killed off all the big animal predators. Rin has no idea what she’s really getting herself into, but she takes a chance and gives Osiris the best help that she can give him. An unexpected twist comes when he manages to convey that he’s unable to shift back. Rin’s life takes a dangerous twist and Osiris takes action to save her and bring home his mate.
Destined to Run is an interesting story overall. There is a moment where I felt that it mirrored Destined to Hide. I like and appreciate how Rin handles the whole situation with Osiris. On one hand, I expected her to freak out or react negatively because she was told all her life that “shifters are evil.” The twists that the author throws into this book both surprised me and in some cases really shocked me. Her father comes off one way, and when he shows his true colors it’s a bit of a shock. I like how things don’t play out in the typical straight-forward manner. Those things take time to really play out and work out for the best for the characters.
My only complaints about this book are 1) the scene between Rin, Cole, and Ares in the club. It’s a steamy scene, but it doesn’t really come together. The scene seems a bit rushed and comes off as incomplete. 2) For me, the epilogue feels phoned in. I love a good epilogue, but this one feels like it kinda wasn’t needed. There was nothing new that contributed to the story. I was hoping for something new happening with Rin and the guys or at least an update on the little girl and her progression, but it’s nothing special and feels like it could have been left off.
I’m rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. It has its good moments, but it doesn’t feel fully complete. I think with more attention to detail and a bit more depth that this book would have been really good. If you read Sterling Thomas’ Destined to Hide and enjoyed it then I encourage you to read J. Kearston’s novel.

I really enjoyed this book! I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. It was recommended to me via the wonderful RHRA community on Facebook.

Let me start off by saying I loved the world set up here! The fact that humans have killed all the predators so evolution stepped in to create shifters – what a cool concept. Plus there’s a lot to unpack here, so it’s a really great setup for an expanded world and series.

The Lead!
Rin, our leading lady, is endearing as all get out. She’s been through a lot and has been brought up to as a sheltered rich girl, who is surprisingly open-minded about things. When an injured Ocelot (can there be a cuter shifter….) crawls in her window, she figures she will help him out. One thing leads to another and she goes on an adventure to get the Ocelot, who the reader knows as Osiris back to his pack.

The Harem!
Kearston has done a very good job at creating a well-rounded harem with Osiris, Ares and Cole. They all have their quirks and issues, which she’s done well at fleshing out in a stand-alone story. Plus they are hot as hell which def comes off while reading the story

The Smut!
There’s a decent amount of sexy time packed into this book! I would have liked there to be more, but honestly, the sex club scene was hot as hell. Plus enjoy a good story that conveniently puts them in a place where taboo stuff is open.

Overall, it was a really good read! I’d love to get more of Rin’s story and to see the rest of the world fleshed out. There were a lot of side characters that can def be fleshed out – I want an Ian story and to learn more about mages. This just means I’ll have to add these to my must-read list!

This was a really cute story and somewhat different, because it's the human FMC who saves her shifter mate, and for the first five chapters, she's not only taking care of him, they also can't communicate because he's stuck in ocelot form. So she grows very comfortable with him as her sort of oversized secret pet. She talks to him, even though he can't talk back, and imagines what he would say, holding a one-sided conversation. He finally recovers enough and they make a run for it because she needs to get away from her abusive father, and he brings her back to his packmates or "brothers".

I liked the humour and banter in this one. Rin is hilarious, and she brings so much comfort and peace to all her three mates that it was lovely to see. Even though she thinks of herself as weak next to them and feels that she doesn't bring much to the table, she doesn't see that just by being herself and being in their lives is already such a gift to all of them.

For once it's not about the weak human and the strong, tough shifters, and I liked that they worked together to solve the mystery and help Osiris to shift back.

Another really enjoyable book set in the Shifting Society world. Rin is a pawn in her world, she has to be the perfect daughter to her big city businessman father. Even if she has everything she could want or need, what she has, isn’t what she wants and she feels trapped. When am injured shifter ends up in her bedroom, and she’s set to marry a guy she doesn’t even like she realises she needs to her away.

First of all the first shifter she meets is the best, Osiris or Ozzy for short is an ocelot shifter which I haven’t seen many of in books before and I really enjoyed him as a character both in his shifter form and his human form.

Rin is stubborn as hell but also somewhat naive and when she ends up in the wilds she’s basically a danger to herself. Her relationship with Ozzy in his cat form is brilliant and she keeps having one sided conversations with him that brought a smile to my face.

I’m honestly loving this world and everything about it and I can’t wait to see what characters are brought to life in the next book.

Very nice standalone paranormal RH in a shared shifter world.
Rin is a daughter of powerful and wealthy man, however, she is not happy in her family - with her father treating her just as a tool for gaining more power and social status, disregarding any feelings or desires his daughter may have. When a half-dead shifter climbs into Rin's room, she decides to help and hide him despite being aware of the huge risks for both her and the shifter. Little did she know what kind of adventure this one decision will bring.
I enjoyed the whole dynamics in the story, being it the plot development with all the storylines included (Rin, her shifters, Ian, or even Sarah), or the swiftly changing relationships. Heated emotions, strong instincts, and dangerous situations dominate the story from the beginning till the end. Broken and troubled, the characters suffer from multiple inner conflicts which create some interesting situations and twists, and I liked watching how they managed to cope with all the challenges.

It's not 5 stars for me. But solid 4.

The plot is good. But it is fast-paced. So, some parts are more skipped over than others. That means, some things aren't explained as much as it shall, and some other too much. Otherwise, the story is funny and cute. The relationship between Rin and her men is sweet and golden. Like Rin's one-sided talks with Osiris. Or her awkward babbling. Mixed with some steamy scenes. So, don't worry - it isn't clean romance.

Overall, it was a read, I enjoyed. There is an epilogue at the end, too. I'm always disappointed, when other books don't have one. But in this case, it was an epilogue, that could have been left out. Because it doesn't bring a real overvalue. Other than, Rin has a job - she always told during the main story, that she will be working -, so it wasn't that important. And apparently Ian stayed there, too. But that's all, that is new. I wished the epilogue would get more in the depth. Like what about her inheritance. Why did Ian stay? It could have ended like book one, with a shifter marriage. But something more, would have been nice.

loved it

I loved this one. It’s in a shared universe with another author the first is Destined to Hide. I recommend reading it first because some characters cross over and some are mentioned in passing.

Rin is an interesting character. From the outside she has privilege and seems to have it all. But behind the scenes, she is abused by those who say they love and others watch the abuse and do nothing.

Now for the men…we have Osiris, who is stuck in ocelot form. He meets her first and together they form a bond while escaping a messed up situation. We have Cole, who has a troubled past. The ones that were suppose to love and care for him abandon him for selfish reasons which lead to him having issues. Then we have Ares the leader of the pride. He has a tragic past as well.

Together they all heal each other. There’s action, suspense, a sex club, and kidnapping. This one has it all. So buckle up for this ride into crazy town.

My review is for the whole series. This world sucked me in immediately. The shifter traits are fairly standard but the back story amd world building about shifters was completely new and amazing to read. It took me till the third book to realize this series is co-written and every other book they switch authors. I was shocked, usually switching the authors changes the writing style enough that it ruins the story with inconsistencies. These books blend seamlessly together and quiet honestly it's the first co written series I've ever enjoyed. The world building is wonderful. The character building gives you a clear picture for each member of the harem. There were several laugh out loud hilarious moments. The waterfight being high on the list. I'm highly looking forward to the next two books.

I am in love with this series between Sterling Thomas and J. Kearston! It has everything I didnt know I was looking for. There is a balance of heat, humor, and happily ever after, that just pushes all the right buttons for me.

I adored reading about Rin and her men, and only wish there was more. I hope she gives these characters another book in the future, since we are staying in this world.

I also need more about Ian, and hope he makes more of an appearance in upcoming books.

This book had me smirking to myself like a loon and clutching my kindle in anticipation as I breezed through the chapters.

I think this is my favourite book by this author so far! So, so good, and no cliffhangers! Grab a copy right away, you won't regret it!

I love this shared world. And I especially love Rin, Ares, Osiris and Coke. They are especially awesome. The uniqueness of a shifter/human dynamic in these stories where she doesn’t get turned or can’t be turned us really awesome. I like it a lot. Kearston’s story in this shared world with Sterling Thomas while stand alone does reference the Wolves from Sterling’s book. Not even a cameo, so not necessary to have read the other book. (Although you should) Rin is an awesome character who really stands out and comes into her own. It was such an exciting read with just enough action, overlapped with lots of snark and hilarity. It was just a perfect combination of everything you need in a book. I really just loved it.

Oh my heart what an adorably sweet and funny book!
Destined to Run is about a human named Corinna that finds a battered ocelot in her bedroom one night. Ozzy, who was so badly hurt by the mages that he was unable to shift back into a human, smelt his mate so climbed into her room. After saving Rin from her evil father and betrothed and introducing her to her other mates and his pack Cole the panther & Ares the tiger, they embark on a hilarious hunt for a mage they can kidnap to help Ozzy to able to shift again.
J Kearstons adorkable humour shines brightly in this book, I don’t think a chapter went by without me snorting or wheezing with the hilarious quips and one liners. An absolute gem of a read and thoroughly lovable!

Amazing book in a Shared Universe!

I love this shared universe, the other book I read in the universe was just as amazing as this one is!

I love the characters so much! Rin is an amazing female lead, strong, capable, with emotional intelligence. The guys are awesome and without ruining the plot, the author does an amazing job with giving a for the most part voiceless character a personality and voice, and not just through different perspective chapters!

I love the plot; it was well-thought-out and penned expertly for the full effect. The amount of romance in this made me happy and there are some moments that had me in peals of laughter!
I can’t wait for more of this universe (I hope there is more!)

Book 2 in a shared world that can be read as a stand alone and it was amazing.

Rin comes from high society, money, and family and acquaintances who hate shifters. A shifter happens into her window injured and she secretly tends to it while her father is arranging her marriage to a horrible man. She goes on the run to help the shifter find his pride and she can escape. Unknowing to her, she is the shifters mate and must come to terms with it. While trying to help her shifter find out why he can't shift back and help a little girl shifter that has been sick, Rins adventure brings her closer to these men and the realization that they are very important to her. I can't wait to see whos story is next!!

Destined to Run, part of the Shifting Society by J Kearston from a shared universe Is the perfect story of a fierce heroine and the alpha men meant to love and protect her—and I could not put it down! The world building was phenomenal, the characters dynamic and pacing was perfect!

Unwilling to be a pawn in her fathers plan, Rin sees it as fate when a shifter makes his way into her room and sees her opportunity to escape her fathers control by helping get this “broken” shifter back to his pride. After all, she was always destined to run…

Overall if you’re a fan of all things paranormal such as shifters, fated mates and all things hot and steamy with a delicious harem then this is the story for you!

I am really liking this shared world! This is the second in the A shifting Society series, each book by a different author and it has been really enjoyable! This book focuses on Rin and her journey with the Pride of cats that we saw a glimpse of in the previous book. We get to see a lot of personal growth from Rin and I really liked that. I really like the world building , the concept is really interesting and unique , these characters were diverse and fun to get to know. I thought this was well written and kept me entertained. I am looking forward to the next book in this shared world series!

Rin is just living to try to get out from under her father's grip. Rin is awakened by injured shifter in her room. Rin decides to whatever she can to help him, even though it could endanger her. Rin's father surprises her with his decision about who is going to marry. Rin has been abused enough, that she decides she needs to run and get the shifter back home. Rin finds meets the two other members of the shifters pride. What they tell her is more than she is able to process. Rin has to decide what she wants in her life.

This was an good book. There are some themes of abuse in this book as well, so that might be a trigger for some.

This does contain a domestic violence/physical abuse trigger warning.

I'm so loving this shared universe. I binge read this all in one night. This story hooks you from the very beginning. There was a wide range emotions from the very beginning. I experienced some anxiety, anger, sadness, deep/heartfelt conversations to hilarious, laugh out loud scenes. Loved it!! We also had cameos from the first story in this series. I highly recommend this entire series!! This is my first story by J. Kearston, I definitely want to read more!

I absolutely loved this book. J Kearston has fast become one of my favourite authors.
The story is set in a world where shifters are shot without questions and humans rule the towns. I loved the world building, it was easy to understand and see how it would all work.
Rin is human and lives with her wealthy, overprotective father. When a shifter, who can't shift, seeks shelter in her room, she forms a bond with the animal.
I loved Rin, she was so funny, especially the one-sided conversations. The guys were all so sweet and protective.
The story kept me hooked and I absolutely loved the ending, it was perfect for the characters.

Rin isn’t sure what’s running through her mind when she decides to help the ocelot shifter that climbs in her window, but she decides to help. Life is hectic and her dad’s decision to marry her off to the jerk she can’t stand reveals some terrifying truths. Deciding that life in the wilds is preferable, Rin runs. Right into the arms of a pride of cat shifters. Struggling to learn how to trust herself and her instincts as well as adjusting to a new way of life Rin starts to learn what a life of freedom looks like. Can she learn about love as well?

Destined to Run is the second book in A Shifting Society universe. J. Kearston’s follow-up is just as good a read as book 1.
