Heart of Lies

Rate this book
Hunt with Alice, Private Investigator of the Supernatural.
When the truth will get you killed, lies are the only way to save your soul…

Mage private investigator Alice Worth and alpha werewolf Sean Maclin have finally moved in together. Their new domestic arrangement is strained by the presence of Alice’s father, a longtime lone wolf struggling to fit into his daughter’s dangerous and unpredictable life. To make matters worse, would-be assassins track Alice’s every move and she’s estranged from her ghost sidekick Malcolm.

Restless at home surrounded by protective werewolves, Alice takes a new case with Malcolm reluctantly riding shotgun. What starts as a straightforward search for a missing artist quickly spirals into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with a seemingly invincible foe whose cruelties know no bounds. Already on edge after another attempt on Alice’s life, Sean and Malcolm ask her to do the impossible: walk away from the case.

When her grandfather, crime lord Moses Murphy, gives her a deadly ultimatum and her plan to resolve her case goes up in flames, Alice will need every power, alliance, and skill at her disposal to defeat her adversaries. The stakes are much more dire than simply life and death—and the very souls of Alice and everyone she loves hang in the balance.

“Edmonds’s imaginative description of the underworld is as fun as it is fascinating, and the twists and turns along the way will keep readers hooked. Series fans will be pleased to find it’s still going strong.” – Publisher’s Weekly

I dare you to find a book cover more atrocious than this one. To be clear, the cover is (thankfully) not representative of the quality of book itself (and the series in general), but what is up with this cover?!

Anyways. If you want a kind of Kate Daniels-lite (KD starts here if you don't know what I am talking about: Magic Bites) than this is the series for you. And I loved Kate Daniels, so even a lite version is something I still want to read. I will say this series has a LOT more 'spice', which could be a plus or a minus according to your personal tastes.

✅ Faes
✅ Action
✅🆗 Plot
✅🆗 Alice
🆗 Moses
🆗 Pace and length
❗️❗️Trigger warning: some gore and torture (off-page), deaths, the usual with Alice...

Gosh, that cover is awful.

Between an old work colleague being hired to dig up dirt on Alice, Ronan showing up unconscious on her front lawn, dead bodies being left at her house, her inner wolf -Daisy- dying, the Council trying to pick up a fight with Sean and Alice, Moses circling, and a new case involving faes, Alice barely had the time to breathe.

This book was so long! And while (too?) many things happened, I still feel that the plot did not progress that much overall. There was action and magic, but this book still didn’t keep me engaged. I had to push myself to continue reading more than once because I just didn’t feel that invested in the story.

The Moses’ plot is being dragged on for too long. I am getting tired of this standstill. I can’t believe that this man who is super powerful and doesn’t even really need to worry about the authorities is still just putting pressure on Alice by making trouble for Sean’s company and hoping she decides to join him before they go bankrupt. It doesn’t fit with Moses’ character and what he did to Alice in the past.

I am not sure I liked the new plotline with Dominic Morelli. I assume the goal here was to show how Alice changed, and how she was still haunted by her mistake and trying not to repeat the past. Honestly, though, I feel that it only showed how she once again thought she knew better than everyone else how to deal with dangerous situations. She kept on insisting that she did the right thing and that she knew what to do, and even when she apologized, it was not a true apology. Sure, she got there and the book shows her growth and the way she took the time to reflect on herself and her reactions, but it got lost in the middle of everything else that was happening, and overall, I was not a fan of Alice’s character in this book.

Alice grew on me after 1 or 2 books, but in this book, she annoyed me. It felt like reading the first book all over again. I understand that she has big trauma and it is totally justified, but I also feel that we’ve been reading about her dealing with the same issues for 7 books now, only with a little less mistrust and anger in each book. It is realistic because healing from such trauma is not easy or quick, but sadly, it is not very interesting to read about for 7 books, and it does make it hard to like Alice, or keep on liking her after a while.

I miss the vampires. Even though Valas was a pain and definitely not one of Alice’s friends, and Charles crossed too many lines for Alice to forgive him, I still missed the presence of the vampires. I feel that they were just brushed aside after the end of the previous book, and we are done with them for the rest of the series, which is sad because I liked Charles's presence in the series, despite his actions and bad decisions when it came to Alice.

For a series that I generally love, I had a surprisingly tough time with this installment.

I'm tired of Alice and her pigheaded martyr complex. And her nonsense - like, why was she so awful to Daniel? I didn't get it and I think she's being an absolute dick to someone who doesn't deserve it.

Also, I think the Dominic Morelli arc didn't help the book. To be clear, I don't blame Alice for what happened with him 5 years ago. She was young, fresh out of hell, trying to find her feet, and desperate to prove to herself that she wasn't her grandfather's monster - she wanted to help people. That was exactly the kind of mistake she was going to make. And it was a mistake, a horrible one. Dominic wasn't blameless here either, and for him to blame her for everything is dumb, and makes him look like a whiny asshole.

But in terms of Alice ... what it highlighted is that despite her assertation that she is a different person than 5 years ago, in terms of her pigheaded insistence that only she knows what is right and it is her way or the highway, she hasn't changed at all. The arc with Morelli actually served to make me way less tolerant of Alice's bullshit, because wow, look, she's been doing this - and hurting everyone around her - for five fucking years and she's still doing it!

TBH, I nearly DNF'd before the 50% mark, which was shocking to me as I generally love this series.

Fortunately, from the Moses meeting onwards, I feel like pieces started to pull together and it got better. Alice seemed to do some real self-reflection, things seemed to sink in, it felt like we were making progress. But maaaaaan, it was painful. So only 3 stars for this one.

I missed Alice Worth books, and now there are two dropping in top of each other. This one was another action-packed addition to the series! I loved the book, and each minute I was away from it was torture.

Unfortunately, though, it was not my favourite...It was long, and I felt it. At few places, I was really annoyed with Alice and her issues. And she acted immature and inconsistent with her character in a couple of places.

Overall, it was an awesome book and I am eagerly waiting for the next one in the series. Can't wait to read the Heart of the Pack!

Well, this was just Urban Fantasy at its finest.

I remember discovering the Alice Worth series a year or so ago and not believing I had found such a good UF series I hadn't already read. They're like gold dust! This newest installment is a fantastic addition.

The last book ended with some pretty horrific experiences for Alice, Sean, Malcolm and the gang and a lot of this book is them working through that. Add in a PI mission to discover a missing artist, who is in definite peril and evil Moses lurking in the background.

What always impresses me with the series in the detailed and we'll crafted characterisation. Alice is a deeply complex, morally grey, deeply traumatised character and he personal growth has been so well done throughout this series. She has a pretty big epiphany in this book and I was so impressed with how it was dealt with.

Her relationship with Sean continues to be swoon worthy and the side characters continue to get their fair share of page time.

I massively recommend this series!

After the slight detours into amnesia and freaky world walking, we are back on track! I thoroughly enjoyed this extremely imaginative story. In fact, I think that is this author’s superpower - with every single storyline, Ms. Edmonds can infuse completely new and utterly unique twists that keep the reader enthralled, no matter a reader’s prejudices.

This story centers around finding four missing 24-year-olds that all have incredible artistic gifts. We delve into a Fae Lord who has been hiding on earth and enjoy all the yummies between Alice and Sean while flying through all the action we have come to expect from this extremely addictive series! While I’m still having trouble with Alice’s bullheaded flight into every situation and not considering ANYONE else (the one huge downfall of this book), I still loved the experience!

“His love for me was a tangible thing. I never doubted how much he loved me because I could feel it—not just through our nascent mate bond, but in every touch, look, or word."

There's a reason why I said Sean is the most patient book boyfriend in the game- because...hoo boy.

description

I feel for Alice as a character and understand why she does what she does- the trauma, hurt, pain, and mental fortitude she has probably had to go through just to get to the point of trusting people would be difficult to say the least.

She is also working through it and growing, but it feels like pulling teeth every book just to get a step closer to her maybe being a little bit happier and healthier...and not constantly lashing out at the people who love her.

So while I like the progress, its also difficult to say that Alice herself makes the reading enjoyable when were dealing with similar issues 7 books in...but with a little less hostility and mistrust each time. (Realistic? Yes. Fun to read? Not really.) Maybe that's not the point of this journey of self discovery + solving cases uf read. I really enjoy this series but Alice can be tough to like at times-it is what it is though.

description

Also the original case of a family seeking their missing sister felt like it was a bit on the back burner.
With her old PI mentor trying to dig up dirt on her, and past enemy trying to assassinate her, Moses trying to reel her in, her wolf dying, Ronan showing up, the Council still stirring up shit, and fae/contracts/witch problems ect all competing to make Alice's life even more complicated- it felt like I never got a chance to really breath.

But I will say at this point everyone is starting to feel like a real family and the bonds are getting stronger with past alliances, friends, and pack- so that was nice. However, I get that the author has to keep upping the ante but

I will read on because I'm looking forward to the Moses confrontation, but I'm going personally need Alice to finally get her shit together together (and by that I mean stop lashing out at everyone and being so stubborn--emotional freak outs are totally fine but I hope she learns how to deal with her destructive tendancies)

But thats easy for me to say because she's a book character- real life- ooof. I don't even want to think about all of those lives and that pressure on my shoulders. Will wait for the next book. Also wouldn't mind a series about Arkady and Ronan...

What to say, what to say...
Anyone who reads my reviews on a more or less regular basis knows by now how much I adore this series. Alice Worth is one of my all-time favorite female protagonists out there, and her entire entourage is amazing. I love the author's writing, the books' pacing and the stories told in them.
And to rate this book anything but 5 stars probably hurts me more than Lisa Edmonds herself. Alas, here I am...

A large portion of this book just didn't work for me as well as I am used to from this series. The story dragged, Alice's inner ramblings and insecurities had me face palming more than once, and her interactions with other beloved characters were so freaking unsatisfying and aggravating. It felt like she'd regressed to being her aloof hermit self from the first two books again, and that all the progress she'd made with the other characters' help was just.. for nothing. Poof!

I did love the last 25% or so, though, so there's that.

This wasn't bad, per se. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

The last 30% didn't make up for all the previous "negative feelings"

Like I said, I need a break from this series... and since the next book focus on the pack that I couldn't care less...

Will maybe check Arkady book!

Such a good twist and great way to continue the series! Plus, the character development was *chef’s kiss* one of my favorites in the series!

This book had such a huge amount of personal growth for Alice and so far it’s one of my absolute favorites of the series!
Despite it being so long, it still flowed as easily as the others thanks to the super intriguing plot and that emotional turmoil.
The villain of the story gave me so many creepy vibes and I so loved how we got to explore how the Fae behave and interact in this world; the little sideplot revolving around Alice’s early years as a PI complemented the book nicely and gave us also another taste of the kind of person Alice was.
As usual, the cast of side characters gave a lot of support to the story itself and each of them: Sean, Malcom, Carly, are so important for Alice’s journey in this book.

A bit all over the place, and dragged in spots, but a good addition to the series. 3.5 rounded up a bit because of some perks. Overall though some of the series is losing steam, some of the storylines are too outlandish, and there's so many characters now.

I have loved this series but Alice drove me crazy in this book and I really wanted to knock some sense into her more than once. It was frustrating because I thought she made some growth in the last book but it was like 10 steps back for this one. Fortunately she did have a lot of self growth at the end of this book (It better stick this time)! I'm actually not a big fan of books that take place in Fae Realms as they are usually very weird and I didn't love all the scenes with Alice dealing with the Fae BUT I love all the secondary characters, the relationships between Alice and Sean and Alice and Malcolm and other friendships. So while this wasn't my favorite and most of the other books in this series were a 5 star I just can't give this one 5 stars. But I'm looking forward to continuing this series.

ARC Review: Overall, I'd give this book an even 4. This book was a great addition to the series and brings us back to what we more typically see in this world following the small detour in Book 6. The main reason I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is for the rocky start to the book. There are so many things happening in this series, that halfway through start to really connect and paint a bigger picture. But up until things start to link together more, it's a little hard to follow some of the separate plot lines the book switches between in the first few chapters.

We see lots going on as Alice takes on a new case with some complicated twists, continues to figure out how to deal with Moses, comfort Malcom following losing Liam in the prior book, finally starting a relationship with her father, and a couple other background plot lines to help feed into Book 8. We get to see lots of characters we've met throughout the series come back and learn more about them as we dig further into the magical world and learn more about other species.

Throughout the book, we also see a lot of Alice development as she starts her life in her new home with Sean and start to really lean on her close friends and family and work to trust them more. Given this has been something developing throughout the series, this book felt pivotal in really seeing how far Alice has come. (we especially see this through a couple chapters at the end of the book - you'll know it when you read it ;) )

4.5 Stars… This was one wild ride from start to finish… Alice goes through transitions of epic proportions as she journeys through this read… Each experience lends itself to her personal growth and insights… However, along this emotional journey the author maintains the high octane, action packed moments that we have come to love in this series; not to mention the witty banter and downright laugh out loud moments… Once again Lisa Edmonds has given us a fantastical read that just leaves us wanting more:)

3.5 I appreciate this series and I have really enjoyed reading it. I read someone describe this series as "Kate Daniels Lite" and I have to agree. I LOVE Ilona Andrews, so I enjoy a series that is attempting to do something similar. It's not really fair to compare them, but this series is one of the best "almost Ilona Andrews" series I've read. And I have been chasing things more like IA for a LONG time.

At times, I really am annoyed by Alice. I think I liked her personality better in the earlier books.

ARC copy review. Have loved this series, to the point where I have the audiobooks as well. So multiple reads of each book under my belt. This book took longer to grab me. Malcolm and Alice weren’t as strong together at the start and this led to a darker feel. Not the normal comedy between the characters, which led to me putting this book down more often. HOWEVER by halfway I was more invested. Especially with previous characters reintroduced and some under threat. I am disappointed that some storyline’s haven’t been completed yet, but, with the next book out so soon, I really hope everything is finished off soon. Looking forward to the next Alice and Sean. Still a great book, just not my favourite of the series.

Heart of Lies by Lisa Edmonds is the 7th book in the Alice Worth series. Alice, Sean, and their pack, friends, family are some of my all time favorite characters. Heart of Lies does not disappoint. So much action, drama, love, self discovery. We met some new people in this book. Some we like, some we don't. But all in all - an excellent Alice adventure. Looking forward to what happens next.

ARC given for an honest review.

Our girl Alice is back and about to learn some hard truths about herself. This was another action packed installment of the Alice Worth series. Along with her usual case, she’s got Moses on her back. Love this story and cast of characters. Fans of Kim Harrison & Ilona Andrews will LOVE Alice, too!

I've read all the books in this series, and this one definitely doesn't disappoint. As usual, I read this book in one sitting, and then immediately re-read it to go back and pick up the finer points of the plot and various sub plots. There is a lot going on in this book, which bodes well for future books (I hope). There's a lot to unpack in this book: Sean's conflict with the Werewolf council and their opposition to his running for a seat, Malcolm's feelings about losing Liam, Daniel's restlessness and uneasiness with both Sean and Alice, and people from Alice's past coming back. There's more, but you need to read the book to get the full effect.

One thing I really enjoyed is the continuing conflicts between Alice and her extended family. It is more believable to have those around her not just fall in line or go along with everything she says and does, even those who are privy to all her secrets. There's a darker undercurrent that kept me interested in the relationships Alice has with everyone around her, in addition to the flashbacks and other action.

I did receive an advanced copy in exchange for writing a review, but it didn't affect my rating. The book speaks for itself and I highly recommend it.

*I received an ARC for an honest review.*

Let me preface my review by saying that I thoroughly enjoy this series. I go back and re-read previous books in between releases and find great joy in Lisa's writing and world-building. Having said that, I liked this book but it wasn't quite...it. I appreciate that we really needed to slow down and let Alice work through her issues like a normal person would, but I did find myself rushing forward a bit to see what happened next as some of her responses and sequences were annoying. Again, that's to be expected as she is written as a very complicated person. I'm looking forward to new entanglements and storylines to augment the growth of Alice and fully trust that this author will always deliver!

*received an ARC of this book*

I read these books the first time in May of this year, and despite that I re-read them all when I got the ARC. I remembered liking them, but they're even better than I remembered!

Things I like:
-she grows in every book, but at a realistic pace. IE. she isn't suddenly a different and less traumatized person
-she does show growth though, and she's getting better about thinking about those around her.
- the PTSD and trauma feel realistic to me. I don't like how often I feel like books tell me a character has trauma and they are bubbly and totally fine.
-cute creatures
-More Moses. He's mostly been just spoken of, so it's interesting that he's in this book more.
-she's not the scariest person in this book. The enemy of the book is unanimously considered more dangerous than her.
-interesting ending. Things happen that I didn't expect.
-Sean using his power to stand up for werewolves that tend to be looked down upon by other packs
-Interesting backstory from when Alice hadn't been free for long.

Things I didn't love:
-less Charles. Boo.
-Malcolm was having a rough time, so less comedic relief from the hilarious ghost.

I'm excited to read the next book!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Alice's worst fears have come true - the grandfather who tortured her and murdered her parents knows she is alive, and he wants her back. On top of that, a new case is much less straightforward than it first seemed, and now she's up against an unexpected and unbelievably powerful enemy. Meanwhile, she's trying to sort out her relationships with Sean and her friends after the events of the last book. All of this is beautifully balanced, as Alice has to face some hard truths and find her way forward...without getting herself and everyone she loves killed.
